Oppo R5 is the worlds thinnest phone

It looks like the government boffins at TENAA got things a little wrong as the Oppo R5 has officially launching in China with a body measuring only 4.85mm.

It was rumoured that Oppo would be launching a thin phone along with the Oppo N3, and here it is! The Oppo R5 is now the worlds thinnest Android smartphone beating the previous record holder, the Gionee Elife S5.1, by almost 1mm.

So TENAA go the measurements wrong but the rest of the hardware seems spot on. The processor is a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon 616 octacore, there is 2GB RAM and the dsplay is a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 model.

Oppo R5 launch video

The R5 gets a 5 mega-pixel front and 13 mega-pixel rear camera, 2000mAh battery and VOOC fast charging. Oppo will launch the phone in China first with TD-LTE support only (so watch out if you plan to order one) and will offer the phone in silver and in a limited edition gold.

Chinese pricing for the Oppo R5 is 2999 Yuan which is around $490

2nd Generation OnePlus

The OnePlus One has been a roaring success and so a 2nd generation phone is on the cards, with it’s own OnePlus developed ROM.

In an interview with Chinese tech sites speaking about the impact of the OnePlus One on the phone market, Pete Lau CEO of OnePlus also spoke about what is in the future of the Oppo funded company.

Lau confirmed reports that OnePlus are building their own ROM development division to create a OnePlus Android ROM (Android+ ?) and went on to say the the 2nd generation OnePlus smartphone would ship with that ROM.

Currently the Chinese version of the OnePlus One comes with Oppo’s ColorOS, while the international model has CyanogenMod as standard. The development of their own ROM would help the brand to further distance themselves from Oppo, and would allow them more freedom. It is unclear if the new ROM would see the end of CyanogenMod for future OnePlus devices.

The interview goes on to say that OnePlus have managed to be profitable this year, with internatoinal daily phone sales counting in the 1000’s.

Xiaomi rumoured to be cutting prices of Mi4 to $260

11th November is Singles day in China, a day to celebrate being by yourself and buying something nice. Each year Taobao, Tmall and others work together with manufacturers to offer special deals and price cuts for one day only.

In the past the limited sales have seen record profits, so not being one to miss a trick Xiaomi will be reducing the price of a number of their products including their flagship Xiaomi Mi4.

Two versions of the Mi4 will be available during the 1 day sale, the 2GB 3G only version of the Mi4 is rumoured to be getting its price slashed to only 1599 Yuan, while the 3GB RAM, 4G LTE version will cost slightly more at 1799 Yuan.

Although sales are for the Chinese mainland only, international resellers might also take advantage of the sales to bring similar price cuts.

Research from mobile ad network provider InMobi has found that iPhone OS currently dominates the European mobile ad market with a 31.9% share, while Nokia’s share has slide to 19.7%, putting it in second place.

Android OS, meanwhile, is making its way after a slow start in these parts: the platform has gained +9.5 share points between July 2010 and October 2010, growing to a 12.9% share.

The ASUS WL-700gE includes a 160GB 3.5" hard drive as well as a BitTorrent client that can keep those downloads going while your PC is switched off.

The hard drive is easily user-upgradeable... just pop the lid of the case, and install like any other drive. The only catch is that the router software is on the hard-drive, not in ROM, so you'll have to clone the contents of the supplied hard drive onto a new hard drive before installation.

Because the Bittorrent client is actually embedded in the wireless router, the BitTorrent transfers don't go over WiFi, which means your WiFi LAN speeds won't be compromised by heavy P2P traffic.

You can also order "home delivery" of Bittorrent files when you're at school/uni/work, according to ASUS's marketing materials. Intel then works with an initial group of teachers to help them become Intel Teach trainers themselves. Encouraging Youth in Scientific Discovery and Innovation Great ideas start with opportunities. At the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world's largest pre-college science competition, students have a chance to dream and create big ideas like: a better way to get fresh water to victims of natural disasters, a way to help the blind and disabled access the Internet, or illustrate ground-breaking mathematical theory. These innovations, and more than a thousand like them, are on display every year at Intel ISEF, a global celebration of scientific excellence.

Intel ISEF brings together over 1,500 leading young scientists from more than 50 countries, regions and territories to compete for more than USD 4 million in scholarships and prizes.

Students' projects encompass a wide range of issues and disciplines, often addressing issues that have stumped scientists for years. In 2007, more than 20 percent of the young scientists competing at Intel ISEF either had or had applied for a patent for their work.

Intel ISEF finalists come from a field of more than 65,000 students who participated in more than 500 regional Intel ISEF-affiliated science fairs around the world.

Every year, more than 1,200 science, engineering, and industry professionals volunteer to travel to Intel ISEF to judge the projects and determine the winners.

Science Service*, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., has administered ISEF since its inception in 1950.

A Computer Clubhouse is more than just a safe environment for youth; it is also a creative place where a "community of learners"—young people working with adult mentors and staff—use technology as a tool for learning and creative expression. The supportive learning environment within the Computer Clubhouses enables young people to build skills as well as self confidence.

The philosophy of the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network is "beyond access," a place where young people use professional hardware and software to create computer-based projects inspired by their own ideas. The Computer Clubhouse Network operates as a program of the Boston Museum of Science in cooperation with the MIT Media Lab.

Community program opens doors for youth

The Intel Learn Program extends learning opportunities beyond the classroom, using an engaging, project-centered approach. The program helps young people develop skills and make connections that enrich their lives and prepare them to succeed in the knowledge economy.

The goal of Intel Learn is to help youth, ages 8 to 16, develop 21st century skills, with a focus on digital literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration.

This program was developed with governments and non-governmental agencies to meet the specific needs of emerging markets. The program, delivered through local community centers, includes learner curriculum and structured training for community center staff. To date, the program has been deployed in Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, India, Israel, Mexico, Turkey and Russia.

In November 1971, Intel introduced the world's first commercial microprocessor, the 4004, invented by three Intel engineers. Primitive by today's standards, it contained a mere 2,300 transistors and performed about 60,000 calculations in a second. Twenty-five years later, the microprocessor is the most complex mass-produced product ever, with more than 5.5 million transistors performing hundreds of millions of calculations each second.
Today's microprocessors are the brains of your personal computer. Here on this tiny silicon chip are millions of switches and pathways that help your computer make important decisions and perform helpful tasks. And microprocessors don't just think for computers-you might find a processor in many other everyday items like your telephone or car. To help you understand how the microprocessor does its job, you will go step by step through a simple task on the chip. For the purpose of this demonstration, you will add two numbers together while watching the microprocessor do its magic. You will complete this task in four easy steps and you may review each step as many times as you want. Remember, each part of the processor has a special task. In support of governments, several bilateral and multilateral technology cooperation and partnerships in Environmentally Sound Technologies have been implemented in the region. In light of this, ESCAP has developed a project titled “Promotion of Publicly Funded Environmentally Sound Technologies Transfer through the Implementation of Unilateral Clean Development Mechanisms on Climate Change”. The project will be implemented from 2007 to 2009 to evaluate the barriers preventing publicly funded EST transfer and to develop models/pilot projects for successful EST transfer based on the concept of unilateral CDM projects in the carbon market. An initial small Expert Group Meeting (EGM) from 17 to 18 December 2007 will define the issues, will create a network of key players in the area of EST transfer and will identify the scope of the regional study to be developed under the current project. In this meeting experts from various regional institutions, government R&D agencies, and UN agencies would participate. UNESCAP in the partnership with China Standard Certification Center (CSC), Beijing and the Asia Pacific Centre for Technolgoy Transfer (APCTT), India, is organizing this event in Beijing, China.
