I can honestly tell you that I never... EVER... thought I would find my family in the situation we are in right now. I know misfortunes sneak in, sometimes appearing out of no where. I know there will always be the opportunity for shock waves to be sent through our life together. I know tragedy happens and does not discriminate. Life, quite frankly, isn't fair all the time. But - again - I never thought I would be faced with the decision we are now forced to make.

This past Tuesday evening - typical. I was drained from a long day of work and worry, but I superwomaned it up, and mustered up the energy to cook the boys an early dinner since they wouldn't be eating with us. Chicken tenders and fries, apples with peanut butter, a pickle, a vitamin, and a drink of their choice. I am always surprised by what I can pull off under such physical and mental exhaustion... even if it is just putting frozen food on a baking sheet. But whatever... I am trying to survive here. Food groups covered? Yes = Success. So... I patted myself on the back by cracking open a beer. Again, typical.

Liam and Collin are totally different beasts at the dinner table. Oddly, a role reversal. Collin, who is normally a tornado of a child, fast and loud and unmistakable, leaving debris everywhere he goes - he is meticulous about his food. Nibbling, savoring, wiping obsessively after every bite, dancing/singing/talking to himself/pretending to be SpongeBob. He is SLOW at the table. Liam on the other hand, the sweetest, most cautious and thoughtful boy in the world, wouldn't hurt a fly (too scared), careful about everything - he transforms into a ravenous, impatient beast at the dinner table. He cant scarf food down fast enough. So, like every other night, he was done before anyone else (except Bren...the other a wild animal at the dinner table). Liam excused himself from the table, morphing back to his rational, human self, took his plate and cup over to the sink, threw away his trash and put his place mat away. Typical, and so wonderful.

He then awkwardly bounded off into the family room, eager to watch the next episode of Clone Wars.

BTW - The theme of my home life is either Star Wars (Clone Wars) or SpongeBob. Occasionally, we will be blessed with the riveting sounds and cinema of Power Rangers or Ninja Turtles. But that's if we're lucky.

Back to Liam.... he went to continue his evening in front of the television, but first, and like always, decided to greet Jagger, our 2-year-old Shepard/Pit mix. We rescued him in November 2015, and we all fell in love quickly.

Jagger attacked Liam, biting him in the face. We were right in the other room (thankfully) and while we didn't see it, we heard it loud and clear. We think that Liam may have unintentionally startled him while he was sleeping. This was the last reaction any of us would have expected from Jagger. Not only was he a big, furry baby, but he was completely in love with our whole family, especially Liam. And like I said earlier, the feeling was completely mutual.

He was supposed to be our (Liam's) forever dog. But that all changed in a split second of chaos and confusion. If you have ever had something like this happen, anything that SHOCKS you, you know that it is as if time is standing still and flying by all at once.

Confession for those that don't know me too well: I am awful is crisis situations. I scream, and curse, and cry, and FREAK the F out. For this reason, Brendon will forever and always be the emergency room representative for our children. I just can't. I actually consider it a favor to the kids.

So, yes, Bren whisked Liam off to the hospital while I held down the fort, (i.e.- continued to lose my mind), trying my best to tend to Collin, who was still eating his dinner. By this point, Jagger had taken several shits all over the house, I can only assume out of fear. He was now hiding upstairs, shivering uncontrollably.

I discovered him when I zombie-walked my way upstairs, still in a haze, with the intention of getting something out of my bedroom. As soon as he saw me, he began to walk toward me, showing his teeth and growling. He looked like he had gone mad - like completely berserk. I know he was scared that I might be there to retaliate, so I know it came from a place of defensiveness and feeling helpless. But this was enough to snap me out of my panic just enough to partially rely on my sensibility.

I called 911 (Animal Control was "closed"). The first operator I talked to was the complete opposite of what a civil servant should be. She was impatient, short, and an all around rude, unhappy person. NOT MY PROBLEM! Especially in my current situation. So I let her have it and hung up on her. Like I said, my sensibility was only partially in tact. So I called one of the most rational people I know - My father in law. Probably the best decision I made that evening. That man talked me off the ledge.

I called 911. Again.

30 minutes later, Jagger was dragged out of my home, his home, by an off-duty Animal Control officer, who had been reached by cell phone and come out to help on his night off.

Jagger did not go easily, but he was finally wrangled/strangled/forced into the back of the truck.

That would be the last time I will ever see him. My last memory of him.

Liam was in the hospital until midnight, and he had to have 4 stitches placed in his face as a result of this terrible incident. He will have a scar on his face for life, that will progressively get smaller with years of care.

It amazes me how brave he has been throughout this week, dealing with the residual feelings of sadness and bewilderment, the pain of his wounds, and learning that he would not be able to say goodbye to a dog that he loved with his whole BIG heart. His spirit, and strength, and understanding has been remarkable, not surprisingly. He is truly an old soul. Truthfully, I was initially worried about this derailing him... rightfully so. I worried about his emotional state more than anything, but he has handled this with such dignity, I no longer have any concerns about him being to bounce back from this.

So here's the deal with Jagger:

Animal Control and the Health Department are required to have any animal that bites a person to this extent quarantined for a total of 10 days. After this time has passed, I will have to do one of two things: Claim him or kill him. Without a doubt, a decision that has my brain and heart battling. Brendon as well.

The simple facts are these - We cannot allow him back in our home. Our main priority is and will always be the safety and well being of our children. There is no guarantee that Jagger will not do this again... in fact, it's a likelihood. I simply cannot take that chance.

We could claim him, and immediately turn him over to a rescue organization, along with a thorough depiction of his "issues," in hopes that this will attract the right home for him. The most serious recommendation I would make, sadly, would be that he not be placed in a home with young children because of their unpredictable nature. But even that does not assure that a.) the rescue would fully disclose these things to potential owners, and b.) that he would never again be in the presence of children (nieces/nephews, family friends, grandchildren, etc). I cannot live with the thought that he would do what he did to Liam, or worse, to another human, especially a susceptible child. It would be selfish of me to choose my love for him over the safety of another potential victim.

An additional factor: When we adopted him, we were unaware of a serious condition that he was harboring - Heartworms. We have spent close to $1k over the last few months as he has gone through treatment. His condition was far along, and we believe it may have played a factor in his eventual undoing. His quality of life, be it in a rescue or with another family, would be grim and unfair. Much like these last few days have been for all of us, Jagger included.

This decision is literally gut wrenching. It has totally occupied my mind for the last 4-5 days, and it has flared up a tendency of mine to feel an overwhelming sense of guilt and personal responsibility. What a ripple effect this has had!

I recently googled for sources of possible relief, commiseration, and advice. I wasn't looking for facts, but more so, understanding. I found this blog. It describes the feeling better than I ever could, and it directed me to several other posts that were also super comforting and informative. Thank you google, and thank you bloggers. This is what motivated me to post this on a blog I was once obsessed with, but have since abandoned completely.

One of the best AND worst parts of this is that it is OUR decision alone. No one else can make it for us. We take solace in the fact that we took great care of Jagger, and he was happy here.

This is a total loss for our family.

We will literally love him to death.

We will never forget him as the wonderful companion he was for us.

Less is More

So much going on right now, I don't even know what to think about first. I don't even know what emotion to feel. This can only mean one thing: I need to re-center.

I need solitude. I need peace. I need love and kindness. I need to be gentle. And the person I need to turn to for all of this is ME. It's time for me to take a few steps back and gather myself.

It's time for me to re-boot. Step-one.... shut down.

With that said, here is what I am trying to grasp today:

The Return of the Last Minute Party Planner

Months ago, I scrambled to put together a birthday party for my 4-year-old son, Liam. It was a very elaborate and idealistic plan, and at the time, I had no real idea how I was going to execute all of the wonderful things I had imagined. Luckily, with the help of some amazing women (Ma and Bri), the party (Superhero themed) went off without a hitch. Complete success and further proof that procrastination is often magical.

Welp, I figured, why not!!?? Why not wait until the very. last. second to iron out the final details of my hub Bren's 30th (surprise) birthday party. It's not like this is a milestone or anything, and it couldn't possibly be any more complicated and stressful than a 4-year-old's party (especially since I hand-made capes for all of his guests-- Coolest Mom Ever-- I know).

So here I am, 3 days away from go time, and I am just now putting together my scheme, again with my Partner in Crime, Bri:

First, the food, because he's a man and that's pretty much priority #1 in his life (immediately following me and the kids, of course!!). ;)

I'm also serving Skittle Flavored Vodka, because despite turning 30.... ah, screw it. Do I really need a REASON to spike the rainbow?

We'll see how this all turns out. If all else goes to hell, we'll have lots of beer and liquor. Not bad for a safety net.

Last Night's Dinner: Chicken Marsala

This is kind of a big deal.

I have never made Marsala Chicken before, and it's one of my man's favorite dishes. Luckily, it turned out really well, (he was more impressed than I was- that's all that matters to me). Definite room for improvement, but overall, pretty awesome.

Side note: Didn't get to watch my Raven's play last night because for some insane reason, we don't get the NFL Network. I was only a little bit furious. Calling Verizon ASAP.

Okay, back to food.

Found this great recipe on Pinterest (duh... where else do people get recipes these days?). Tweaked it here and there, but stayed true to it for the most part.

Chicken Marsala with Brown Butter Pasta

Prep time: 25 minutes

Cook time: 35 – 45 minutes

Total time: 1 hour +

Yield: 8 servings

...Ingredients...

4 thin sliced chicken breasts – cut into cutlets

1 lb mushrooms sliced

2 bunches green onions chopped

3 cloves of garlic chopped

Dash of Balsamic Vinegar

1 cup flour

1/4 tsp oregano

1/4 tsp

3/4 tsp salt

dash pepper

2.5 sticks butter, divided

4 Tbsp vegetable oil divided

1 cup dry Marsala wine

2 cups chicken broth

pinch of salt – to taste

1/2 cup parm

1 lb pasta – spaghetti

...Time to git er dun...

Slice chicken into cutlets.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, marjoram, salt, and pepper .
Lightly coat chicken breasts in flour.
Slice your veggies- mushrooms, garlic and scallions

Melt 1/2 stick of butter and 2 Tbsp vegetable oil in a large skillet. Heat over medium-high until butter is melted. Add mushrooms, garlic and scallions. Season with salt and pepper and a dash of Balsamic Vinegar. Sauté over medium-high heat until water is cooked out of mushrooms and they are starting to brown. Remove from pan and set aside.
Add another 1/2 stick of butter and 1 tbsp oil to the pan. Also start your pot of boiling water for the pasta at this point.
Place chicken pieces in a single layer in frying pan over medium heat. Allow to brown on both sides. Remove and repeat with remaining breast cutlets. Remove all when done, leaving behind the butter and brown bits in the pan.
Add Marsala to pan and let simmer for approximately 1 minute. Add chicken broth. Stir to combine and add in mushroom/onion mixture and chicken breasts. Stir and then let simmer over medium-low heat. Cook until sauce is thickened, approximately 20 minutes.

While your sauce is simmering and thickening is the time to start your brown butter. In a small pot melt 1/2 stick of butter over medium heat. Don’t touch it, but watch it carefully. It will start to bubble, foam, and under that foam it will start to brown. Brown well, removing from heat just before you think it’ll burn. If you under-brown it you end up with greasy pasta. If you brown it well you end up with little bites of heaven.
When pasta is done, drain well and toss with browned butter and grated parm.

And there you have it! Serve it with some crunchy, garlicy bread and a clean salad.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

I'm a big girl now, peeps! Not that I wasn't before, but now it's totally official.

After ~~months~~ years of trying, I am finally about to embark on a new professional opportunity!

YAY!!! (says the big girl)

It's a weird feeling. I have been in my current position for just about 4 1/2 years now- learning and growing and meeting fabulous people along the way. I have been the veteran, the expert, the go-to girl for so long... it is tough to imagine beginning that process again.

But alas, the time has finally come for me to spread my power-suited wings and (try to) fly.

I promise not to poop on anyone's head while I'm soaring on the highs of newness and possibility!

In other news, I am on Instagram now and my obsession with taking and posting pictures of my children (and admittedly myself) has reached an all time high, or low... depending on how you look at it. I'm a perpetual optimist, so to me, it's fine. Completely fine.

My inclination to quit Facebook cold turkey has only deepened and seems more appealing than ever now that I have Instie to depend on.

It's a tough call to make though because I am addicted to Facebook. I might need to seek out a therapist before making any drastic and life-altering decisions regarding my online presence.

In other news, the fam is doing well. My hubby is still better than yours, sorry.

Can't you just be happy for me?! ;)

My 4-year old boy is still the most amazing kid I know and I don't foresee that changing. Latest Liam-ism "Mommy LOOK! I crushed my salad! And now I'm going to crush my spaghetti!"

Oh you crushed them, did you!?!?!

He also told me the other day "I am certainly not done with my potatoes."

The kid kills me.

My other (wonderful) baby boy turns 1 in about 2 weeks. That's really as much mention as I want to give that topic because I puke in my mouth every time I think about it.

Oh, here's something FUN! I was at the Raven's game on Sunday and saw this little number up close and personal. Hilarious!!!

All in all, things are looking up 'round here. I had a really rough Spring/Summer for reasons I am still uncovering. Another topic another post. I don't want to ruin the sarcastic tone I've got going on here today.

I disappeared off the radar for a while, but I fully intend on setting realistic blogging goals, and sticking to them as best I can. Hopefully, one day, this will ease my transition into the small percentage of the population who isn't on Facebook. :)

Dear Liam and Collin- What say you two conveniently decide to sleep in until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning? NO? How about 8:30? 8:00? Fine. 7:30, and that's my final answer.

Victims' Rights Run & Walk

George Mason University hosted it's 16th Annual Victims' Rights Run & Walk this afternoon. The event raises awareness and support for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and other crimes. It is part of a series of events during National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

I have been an employee here at Mason (Go Patriots!) for going on 4 years now, and I have signed up to participate in this walk every year. As is often the case with having small children at home, I have gotten pulled away to tend to the needs of my family each year, and I have not been able to actually walk/run with my department.

Not this year, baby! This year, despite having been on my death bed all week, hacking up lungs and all, I walked with a group of co-workers ("Team U-Hall").

It was a perfect day... sunny, 60 degrees, with a chilly wind. It was so nice to get out of the office for almost 2 hours mid-day and support a cause that deserves as much attention as it can possibly get: Victims' Rights.

I know several people who have been personally affected by physical and/or some form of sexual abuse. This is a cause very near and dear to me, and it has been a central theme over the last 4-5 months. Not on purpose, actually. Just random pieces that are forming a bigger puzzle for me. I have written papers about this topic, I will be giving a presentation on teen dating violence next week, and today, I walked for victims. While all of these things were not planned around or because of each other, I think I have found a calling; a cause that I want to throw myself behind.

Journey Forward: Roadblocks

If life were an Olympic sport, I would be a hurdler. For sure. I might even be a good one. But that did not come without practice.

In yesterdays post, I talked about my biggest ambition: getting my degree.

It is so close I can almost feel the tassel brushing up against my cheek.

It has not been an easy journey by any means. Roadblocks, detours, dead ends, etc. You name it, I faced it. This process has really taught me a lot about resilience; it has really shown me how to apply myself despite unfavorable odds. That's the thing about hard times: they tend to build your fortitude if you'll let them.

On my journey through living kindly, there are challenges I face on a daily basis.

We live in a world where being critical is encouraged; a society where cynicism and sarcasm are built into our very language(s). This is by far one of my biggest confusions while I try to put kindness and love at the forefront of my actions. My intentions are true and pure and good, but translating that into constant kindness is way, Way, WAY easier said than done. I find myself having a negative thought sometimes, and I really have to catch myself (if I can) before it flies out of my mouth. I have to almost reprimand myself:
"Oh man... that's not nice, I shouldn't. Woosah, Meg. Woosah."

I seriously do that.

By far, my arch-rival on the kindness-mission is traffic. This may sound really silly, again, but I become a different person behind the wheel of my car.
My blood pressure rises up to the tippy-top of my ear lobes and
I can literally feel a panic attack waiting in the wings of my soul.

I have a real problem with how inconsiderate, or neglectful, or unaware, or RECKLESS other drivers are, and my anxiety levels shoot through the roof.
When this happens, kindness flies out my passenger side window.

It is something I am working on, but it is also something I think I need help with.
A driver's therapist? A certain type of music? A different route?
(Yeah right. In Northern, Va. all routes are awful).

As I said before... challenges are a good thing. They are healthy. The teach you. The build character.

But only if you let them.

Relentless

What is the one thing in your life that you will stop at nothing to get/be/do?

That one thing that you will never stop striving to have.

That one thing that would fulfill a part of your soul that nothing else could.

That one thing you stay up and think about at night.

That one thing that you talk to yourself about.

That one thing for me is my degree.

It may sounds silly, but it is totally true and I'll tell you why:

I graduated from high school in 2000 (yep, I~~'m almost~~ AM the big three zero).

And what year is it again... 2012?

I went straight to college and lasted (not even) a full semester. It was a confusing experience, and one I am not extremely proud of. Sure, I didn't do what I set out to do, and blah blah blah. But what mattered to me in the years to follow was that I let down some of the people that supported me. It was a horrible feeling, and one that I was not equipped to handle on an emotionally mature level at that point in my life.

So what did I do?
I rebelled. I partied, and I partied hard. (something I did almost none of in grade school).
I came out of the proverbial cage like a bat out of hell, and I avoided responsibility like the plague.

For almost four years I worked in and out of ordinary restaurants, had a few near death experiences, drank WAY too much, and gave my parents a few extra (thousand) gray hairs.

Finally, in 2004, tired of running myself ragged and having nothing to show for it, I made a serious decision to go back to school. With the help of my family, I stared at a community college where I would spend the next two years busting my ass before transferring to a university with a 3.8 GPA. Yeah... I was serious about it this time.

After 3 successful semesters at George Mason University, Bren and I found out we were expecting a baby. Needless to say, this put an immediate halt on the ol' education. I took two full semesters off of school. I cannot tell you how upset I was about having to stop taking classes. I was thrilled about having a baby, but depressed about the changes it was going to force me to make. (I have to laugh at that now... "changes." Yeah... a baby changes EVERYTHING). I swore that I would go back as soon as I could. Bren promised to do everything in his power to help me do so.

About 3 months after I had Liam, I landed a full time gig at George Mason University (how convenient you say!), and began taking classes again soon after. Luckily for me, GMU offers its employees tuition benefits. This allowed me to take 2 courses per semester (which was all I could handle anyway having a newborn at home and all...).

Four years and two kids later (Liam and Collin), here I am: On the cusp of my last semester. About to graduate in about 7 months. Working full time. Planning crazy birthday parties last minute. Trying to do this blogging thing (which I love and wish I had more time and energy for).

I cannot begin to tell you what getting my degree signifies for me.

Strength. Support. Faith. Determination. Focus. Creativity. Passion. Hope. Drive. Comfort. Relief. Relentlessness.

Most of all, I know, that if I can do THIS... I can do anything.

Never give up on that one thing. It will be yours sooner than you expect!

Dear blog- Please forgive me for neglecting you all week. I can't believe I haven't done a single post. It's not that I didn't WANT to. You'll just have to trust me on that one. I'm hoping you and I get to spend more time together next week.

Dear fellow bloggers- Has this ever happened to you? I have been so busy this week that not only have I had a limited amount of free time, but in that free time, I haven't been able to come up with anything interesting to write about. I'd call it "writer's block," or better yet "blogger's block," but it is so much more than that. "Thinker's block," possibly. How do you combat this if and when it has ever affected you? I don't want to fall of the face of the blogosphere every time I have a stressful week. Any and all suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.

Dear Hub- OMG. All I wanted to do was curl up next to you this morning and not move. You are so comfy. I'm sorry I fell back asleep when you went down to make our coffee. And thank you for sending me a text ("Get up.") to wake me back up. It worked.

Dear Liam- First soccer lesson this weekend!!! Aren't you so very excited? If not, I'm excited enough for the both of us! I promise you'll have fun Bubs. I can't wait to see how well you do!

Dear Collin- I see dat wittle toooof poppin' through doze wittle gumz! I'm rootin' for ya, Monkey!

Dear 80 degree weather that is on its way- Everything is better when you're here. Everything. Never leave me.

Dear Mom- It was so nice spending time with you and AK last weekend. Thank you for everything: the pictures, the lunch, the dress, the company. I had such a good time! You're the best! I love you!

Dear Bri and Alex- Can't wait for a little girl time with you tonight!!! Such a treat! Let's pretend like there's no one else in the bar but us!

I joined the Journey Forward series for the first time last week.
It is a perfect pairing with the vibe of Smile at a Stranger.

The goal of participating in Journey Forward is personal enrichment, self awareness, and moving toward your potential. It is based on a central word, or theme, on which you focus your energy and attention, and blog about it weekly.

My "word" was an easy choice for me because it is an attitude I wish to impart on life in general: Kindness.

This week's Journey Forward post is about images, or graphics (i.e.- videos) that embody your chosen word; to share some of your pins from Pinterest that exemplify the significance of your word.

This is what kindness looks (and sounds) like to me:

1- Sarah Kay- Spoken word artist. "Hands" Listen- It's just beautiful.

2- Kindness is an animal instinct. And an animal NEED.

3- Kindness is priceless, ya know.

4- Video- Amy Krause Rosenthal's "Thought Bubble"- asks "How Do YOU Want to be Remembered" "What Have You Filled the World With?"

5- Because making others feel good makes ME feel good.

6- Simplicity. Kindness is not complicated.

7- Anis Logjani- Spoken word artist. "Shake the Dust" Another amazing person trying to lift people up with his wonderful gift with words.

8- This is what I see everyday at home with my two boys, and besides a mother's love for her children, sibling love is one of the purest forms of love (and kindness) there is.

9- Do RIGHT. Because it's wayyyy cooler than doing wrong.

10- Parents. And especially my mom. From whom I learned what kindness was.

11- What Teachers Make- Taylor Mali. Powerful stuff, y'all.

Getting Away With Murder

[I have been waiting to post on this for a while because I have been trying to assess my own feelings about it. A new revelation was brought about this morning, and it really helped me to solidify how I felt. I hope I don't offend anyone because that is the furthest thing from my intention. If I do, I apologize up front, and sincerely hope you will leave a comment expressing your own point of view- We all have our own. This is mine]:

How silly is this Stand Your Ground Law in Florida? Does this make sense to anyone?

Don't get it twisted- If someone entered my house intrusively, or threatened my children physically, the claws are comin' out, and Momma Bear is coming after you. I would do WHATEVER it took to protect and defend.

But this law does not deter murders from happening and it does not ward off criminals. No. It does the complete opposite! It encourages violence, promotes conflict, intensifies fear and paranoia,

and allows for misinterpreted "threats" to turn into a tragic and senseless murders.

Treyvon Martin's murder was a total tragedy; awful in every way. But was it the racially driven hate crime that it has been made out to be?

This would be a tragedy regardless of race, age, gender or sexual orientation, would it not?

He is a person. He could be MY son.

The real issues here are:
* the total neglect shown to the victim's side of the story,

* the utter ignorance of the police department to do a comprehensive investigation,

* and the LAW itself, which states:
"(a) person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death..."

These are the REAL tragedies. We're doing ourselves (and Treyvon) a disservice by classifying this as a racially charged event.
This is a HUMAN event!

What's even more unfortunate is how the media has manipulated the situation:
The Today Show edited the 911 transcript to fit a particular angle.
They spun the story. They doused an existing fire with kerosine.

Here is how NBC handled the 911 call:

"Zimmerman: This guy looks like he's up to no good. He looks black."

Here is how the 911 call ACTUALLY went:

"Zimmerman: This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about.
Dispatcher: OK, and this guy - is he black, white or Hispanic?
Zimmerman: He looks black."

Look at what effect the media has had on this.
Zimmerman only mentioned Treyvon's race when he was asked by the dispatcher.

Today Show- HOW could you do this? Why? Do you know how heavily you contributed to the problem?
Are we in LA LA LAND???

The saddest part of this whole thing is that there is a life lost.

I would love to see this Zimmerman dude arrested and face a jury of his peers. I would love to see him charged with murder and have his guilt or innocence determined by a fair and thorough trial process.

I see people using this awful event as an excuse for hate, for more disagreement, for unnecessary outrage. That's not what Treyvon deserves. He deserves more than that.

Treyvon should be a symbol of something much more beautiful, much more profound. We should be injecting LOVE into the core of this situation. We should be honoring him by bringing to light the actual events that took place, and we should be honoring him by bringing him justice.

Race is not the issue here.
In fact, I believe it is taking away from the real issue:
A legal system that allows people to get away with MURDER.

This should not be about ME and YOU. Or ME against YOU. Or YOU against THEM. This should be about one thing: Justice.

Note: I am not insensitive to the fact that hate crimes happen. My views in this blog post pertain specifically to this situation, and do not fully reflect how I view racial issues or hate crimes in a general sense. These are complicated social and human issues, and I am in no way condoning, dismissing, or making light of them.

Last Minute Party Planner

So Liam's birthday party is three weeks away (less than), and I have been tossed/shoved into the role of "party-planner." Not that I mind planning parties...

About 2 months ago, a deal came through on Living Social that I could not resist: A voucher for half off of a themed birthday party through the local company Oogles and Googles. I did a little bit of research on it, including reading some reviews, and it seemed like a GREAT deal- $150 for 2 hours of party activities designed around a chosen theme (costumes included), a coordinated birthday cake, and customized invitations and thank-you cards. In my area, you can't book a Chuck-E-Cheese party for less that $300.

So I bought the voucher, thinking it was the perfect scenario.

I was in contact with the woman who plans these parties, and she seemed to be really competent. She took all of my information, asked important questions, gave honest answers, and told me she would have my invitations to me within 2-3 weeks so I could get them out to Liam's guests as soon as possible.

It's been 6 weeks, and guess who doesn't have the invitations that were promised to her? THIS GIRL!

So I have reached out to her and ~~asked for~~ told her I would not rest until I got my money back. I was nice enough about it, but at the same time, I'm not letting go of that money, honey.

As of today, I still have not heard back from her.

Needless to say, I DO NOT recommend this company. What a shame.

Money aside, (and trust me lady, I'm coming to get ya), I still have a birthday party to plan. In less than 3 weeks. With a budget MINUS $150. Which means one thing... it's time to DIY.

The theme is a "Superhero" party, so my initial thought was to have the kids make masks and capes. But the more I consider that, I think it would take too long.

So instead, they will be making their own masks, and I will be making a personalized cape for each kid before the party.

I definitely have my work cut out for me, but I am always up for a creative challenge.

Any other ideas for a Superhero party for 4-year-olds? Games? Activities? Food?

Constant Liam

He is in the 90^th percentile for his height and the 75^th percentile for weight; a big boy!! He's hoping that will help him make it big time in pro football someday (any team but the Steelers), but he knows that it is just as impressive (and necessary) to be smart, too.

He is the best dancer on this side of the Mississippi, and he has a great instinct for music. His singing voice is awesome, and even if he doesn’t quite know all the words to a song, he still gives it his all.

I so admire his enthusiasm and passion.

He has very strong muscles… biceps, calves, abs... and he knows how to show them off too.

Soon, he’ll be so strong that he’ll be winning wrestling matches against his Daddy on a regular basis, while I sit by and cheer/laugh/peemypants. He's funny too (hysterical, actually), and he loves to be the center of attention.

His head must be holding one of the biggest brains ever to exist. That’s how smart he is! And let me tell you a little secret: He’s only going to get smarter….

He can count to 100 and he’s already learning how to read.

But those are just the basics to this guy. Oh yes, he is far more dynamic than his muscles and good looks. His gifts are felt... not seen.

He sees beauty in people and places.

He is kind to those who need kindness, as if he can smell their sadness.

He loves to make people feel good… just because.

He remembers to consider how people feel,

and he has the uncanny ability to put himself in other people’s shoes.

He shows sympathy, and he has empathy pumping through his veins… innately.

He KNOWS himself, and what’s even cooler is that he loves himself,

I hope he keeps that… there’s no reason to ever let that go.

Dear Ray: Watching you push through this week has been nothing short of admirable. I know how much Jewel means to you, and she will always always always be with you. On Bullying

It's not easy to be thrown into the social and educational demands of adolescence.

It's not easy trying to figure out the complexities and confusions of an evolving body and mind.

It's not easy to have braces, or acne, or a unibrow.

It's not easy to be the subject of ridicule when all you really want is to be accepted.

It's not easy to get to know yourself.

Today's post serves a dual purpose.
I already had a post in mind on bullying and have been drafting it for a while now.
Earlier this afternoon, I came across this cute post, from a blog I found a few weeks back, and in it Torie is linking up with Chelsea at Life is a Sunset.
She does a series called "Journey Forward" and it's all about self-empowerment and motivation and setting healthy goals and happiness.
Right up my ally. Have to participate.

So in Journey Forward, you pick a word that means something to you on your path to self-discovery.

Obviously my word is kindness.

This week, the series is focusing on role models. I will get to mine a little later.

Let me first say a few words about my original thought for this post:

Bullying.

I was bullied as a kid. I remember how awful it made me feel to be publicly humiliated during a time when I was trying to figure myself out. It was a setback, honestly. The more I was picked on about things that were totally out of my control, the further away it pushed me from knowing my true self.

It has taken me a long time to work through the residual effects of being picked on as a kid, and I have realized:

Meanness is a sick disease. It damages. It destroys. It hurts. And sometimes, it kills. Much like some of the more serious illnesses threatening human beings, there doesn't seem to be any cure for meanness. It hasn't been studied enough to identify solutions.

Meanness fosters meanness. Hate fosters hate. You cannot combat a bully by being a bully back. We cannot find a solution for this threat by being hateful in return. We can only love, and care, and forgive, and be kind.

Ray Rice is a running back for the Baltimore Ravens, and he is a role model on and off the field. On his Facebook page today, he reminded us all of the difference between right and wrong:

"I want to say something to the kids out there: Bullying is a BIG deal. It is NEVER acceptable and you may be causing a lot of damage to another person. If you don't want to be friends with someone, then you don't have to...but there is NO NEED to gang up on that person, tease or insult them. The consequences of hate can be devastating. You can be a HERO to someone who is being bullied, just by being their friend. Parents: Have a SERIOUS talk with your kids! Whether you think they are involved in bullying or not, they DO see it! Encourage your child to be a kind person and reach out to a kid who needs a friend!"

I am so touched by his words, and by his sprirt. Here is a man who makes millions and millions and could spend his time and energy doing countless other things. And yet, he's on Facebook, trying to spread a loving and inspirational message.

This is exactly what I am trying to instill in my sons: The importance of kindness and fairness.

Thank you Ray Rice, for being such a role model for young kids out there who are struggling with this issue in one way or another. With someone of your celebrity and humility, people are SURE to listen. I know I am.

Kindness is: Flushing the Toilet

Ladies, ladies, ladies.

What is WRONG with some percentage of the female population? Why must we behave so poorly in an already uncomfortable situation?

I hate public restrooms as much as the next chick, and I hate the fact that I need them.

Yes, in fact, we all need them. No one can go all day, everyday without "the urge" overtaking the strength of their bladder (or sphincter- love that word).

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.

Am I right, or am I right?

The problem I have is this:

Not everyone goes to the bathroom with the same amount of grace and dignity that I personally try to demonstrate, whether at home or in public.

I mean, let's just start with washing your hands when you're done with your business. Is this not considered important any longer? Is it just acceptable and not-digusting-at-all to finish up and touch surfaces with your germy hands?

Moving on... I realize that some of us would rather be "the squatter" than use seat protectors- they are loud, and crinkly, and totally pointless anyway. But... if you're a squatter and mess up the seat beneath you, is it not in MY best interest that you clean up your nasty pee from the seat so that I don't have to worry about accidentally sitting on it when it soaks through my previously mentioned pointless seat protector? Toilet paper serves many, many purposes, ladies. Let's get creative... and sanitary? please.

It gets to a whole other level of sofouligaggedjustthinkingaboutit when poop comes into play.

First of all, I get it. The bottom line here, folks, is that everybody poops. (that's right men- we poop just like you!!!). But could we all just agree to be respectful of each other?

Here are some things that I think would help in poopy situations:

The Courtesy Flush: I am a HUGE fan of this one. Not only do I believe in sparing my stall-neighbor, but I don't wanna smell your doo either. Just a quick, fair flush.

The Double/Triple/HoweverManyTimesItTakesToGoDown Flush: Don't just leave your doo in the toilet for me to stumble upon. Take care of your own shit, literally.

The Once Over: Let's all just make sure that our poo, in its entirety, makes it INTO the toilet bowl. Not onto the seat, not on the wall or floor. We're not animals here, are we? ARE WE?

And lastly, please, no grunting.

[in Photos]: My Low-Key Weekend

Hub works every Saturday, so I have the entire day with my boys. We usually get out of the house, because contrary to what some might think, it's actually a harder day to manage at home. I would much rather be out and about, letting Liam run himself crazy at a park somewhere, getting our shopping done, giving Collin a chance to nap (because he won't at home... I mean, why would he?)

But not this weekend. This weekend, it rained. This forced me to STAY HOME! And not spend money. And instead, spend time on the couch with my babies, watching Disney movies, eating popcorn, drinking soda and dozing when I felt like it. Saturday with my boys was so low-key and so very perfect.

What a hellish week this has been you guys. HELLISH. I mean, I am still smiling, don't get me wrong. But I have been on the verge of a panic attack for about 3 days now.
