Interested in global energy politics? Basic computer skills? Looking for a chance to get your work in print?

Through the launch of its OpenOil Editors Scheme, OpenOil is offering the chance for selected students or recent graduates to contribute to a global series of guides covering the extractive industries worldwide. In return we offer you the chance to contribute to our publications. You will also receive basic training in wiki editing skills, support from head office, a certificate and a copy of the book you contributed to over the course of the internship period. As a distance internship, we can offer the flexibility to fit in contributions around your studies or work commitments.

To see what you could be sinking your teeth into, take a look at our growing family of guides at wiki.openoil.net

What are the wiki guides?

A pioneering series of country-level natural resource reference guides, consisting of fully-sourced articles of between 100-1,000 words in English and local languages summarising contracts, assets, issues, policies and the geopolitics of producing countries. Think of a ‘Wikipedia’ for the global energy sector. We also export to print book, e-book and smart phone apps. The guides create a richer info sphere on the worldwide extractives sector and many are already in the hands of key decision makers and opinion formers in the countries covered to date.

Are you bi- or multi-lingual?

Maybe you could get involved in translating or building our materials in French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Farsi, Russian… or other languages.

What are we asking for?

An initial voluntary 60-hour commitment to editing one of our wikis, working alongside other students grouped by country. Following this, there may be the opportunity to continue with a paid Stage 2 phase of editing, helping us to build out our range of materials globally.

What next?

If you or your society are interested in getting involved or finding out more, please get in touch on lucy.wallwork@openoil.net. We are particularly interested if a group of students with common research interests would like to get involved in building out a wiki for a particular country (a market heavyweight such as Saudi or Venezuela? Or another country where you have a particular interest). It would be great to hear from you.

· Enhance U.S. economic security by identifying technologies with the potential to reduce energy imports from foreign sources; reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions; and improve efficiency across the energy spectrum.

· Ensure the U.S. remains a technological leader in developing and deploying advanced energy technologies.

ARPA-E’s Technology-to-Market (T2M) team serves the overall APRA-E mission by working on commercialization strategies across programs and with individual projects.
ARPA-E is seeking Technology-to-Market Scholars for the summer of 2013 who have a unique combination of technical and business skills to assist in commercialization of high-impact technology development programs. This internship opportunity offers exposure to promoting the transition of cutting-edge energy technologies to market in a fast-paced environment. Scholars will assist with Technology-to-Market program efforts in one or more topical areas. Each selected Scholar will be paid a weekly stipend and travel costs; length of stay ranges from 8-12 weeks.

Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree (preferably in a technical field), are in the midst of completing a graduate level degree (preferably MBA or technical degree M.S./Ph.D. with a business focus), and have 3+ years of relevant work experience.

The 9th Annual Carnegie Mellon Conferance on the Electricity Industry: TOWARD DATA-DRIVEN LOW-COST GREEN U.S. ENERGY SYSTEMS

This is a two day, single-track conference which features research presentations by graduate students, academics, consultants, representatives of ISOs, and representatives from government. This is a great opportunity to connect with leaders in academia, government, or industry, and most importantly other students working on electric grid related engineering and policy research. This is also a great forum for presenting your own research and getting helpful feedback or starting new collaborations.

Please see the website for registration and the call for presentation submissions.

Secretary Chu invites you to attend an Inauguration event on Saturday, January 19th at the Energy Department’s cafeteria entitled “Energy All Stars: What’s Our Energy Future?” As our nation celebrates the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, the Energy Department will host energy visionaries to share their insights and perspective on our nation’s energy future. The Energy Department has a terrific line-up of speakers and we are looking forward to an exciting and thought-provoking afternoon.

Speakers include:

Doyle Benneby, President and CEO, CPS Energy

Jennifer Granholm, former Michigan Governor

Michael Liebreich, Founder and CEO, Bloomberg New Energy Finance

Bill Nye the Science Guy

Susan Tierney, Managing Principal, Analysis Group

Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles

Secretary Chu will provide opening remarks and we are awaiting word on a White House representative who will also provide a welcome.

The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Doors will open at noon and we will have an array of exhibits from DOE program offices that we hope you will find of interest, as well.

Please note, space is limited and tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Please feel free to forward this invitation to any and all who you know will have interest!
