An association of individuals that refers to itself as the Debian Project has made its common cause to create a free operating system called Debian GNU/Linux or simply Debian. The Debian systems use the Linux kernel which is a piece of software supported by thousands of programmers worldwide. Debian is sought to be provided for other kernels such as the Hurd, a collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel to implement different features.

Debian comes with over 18,000 packages- precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on one’s machine for free. The system is somewhat like a tower where the kernel forms the base, next to which are all the basic tools. The software on which the computer runs is next while the Debian sits on top to carefully organize and fit everything so that all works together.
