GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE WHITEWATER RAFTING

While the Tennessee fishing lakes get most of the attention around here, there's nothing quite as exhilarating as a ride on an untamed river. We have several outfittersthat conduct guided trips down the Big Pigeon River and other regional rivers.

The Big Pigeon River offers twelve Class III and three Class IV rapids with names like "Too Late," "Vegamatic," "Razor Blade," "After Shave," and "Lost Guide."

The Big Pigeon River gushes all around and through Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Cherokee National Forest, Martha Sundquist State Forest and the Appalachian Trail. Come see the Great Smoky Mountains from the whitewater, and go rafting today! No Experience Necessary, Minimum age: 8 years old OR 70 lbs.

The upper portion of the pigeon river is for the adventurous and the lower section is more of a relaxed float trip. Check with one of the companies below to see what best fits your needs.

More about the Pigeon River: the river is dam-controlled with scheduled water releases from Memorial Day through Labor Day on Tues, Wed, Thurs & Sat. The Pigeon River of western North Carolina and east Tennessee rises above Canton, North Carolina. Below this, it flows roughly parallel to Interstate 40 for many miles and is impounded by a dam (Walters Dam) belonging to Progress Energy (Waterville) before entering Tennessee, where it flows into the French Broad River.

The river takes its name from the passenger pigeon, an extinct bird whose migration route once included the river valley in North Carolina.
