This Australian brand is one of my favourites seen at the last Pitti Bimbo kids fashion trade fair and they have just released their beautiful Autumn/Winter 2022 collection.

Titled ‘The Secret Garden’ the collection has beautiful floral prints, intricate laces and rich silk velvets.

The silhouettes for the winter season are voluminous and large with a nod to Victorian times. Petite Amalie was born out of a love of timeless fashion pieces that can be cherished for years to come, not only that they are the perfect pieces to hand on, for the current generation or the next so have a nod to sustainability too.

Alex, the creator is a mum of three beautiful girls herself so has plenty of house models to test the wearability of these gorgeous creations!

The world’s premier kids fashion fair, Pitti Bimbo has returned to its own stand alone dates following an online only offering during covid then by editions sharing grounds with the mens fair Pitti Uomo in Florence.

One of the pleasures of attending this fair is not only seeing many exhibitors and visitors from all over the globe but also it’s proximity to the wonderful city of Florence, just a short walk away from the show grounds of the Fortessa Da Basso.

Many Instagram opportunities are gratefully taken between the mini models on hand and the magnificent architecture. I’ve certainly missed my visits here as I know have many others.

This was obviously a reduced edition from the pre-covid era, however the many varieties of kids fashion buyer will have been satisfied as the exhibitors covered a wide ground from the perfection of the ceremony and occasion dresses on display in the section 100% Bambino to the modern stylish brands in the Apartment section, supported by the cool and sustainable in The Kid’s Lab.

Some of the best avante garde kidswear labels returned such as Raspberry Plum, Paade Mode, Anja Schwerbrock, Petite Amalie and Tia Cibani.

While the exquisite Italian style was represented by the return of Miss Blumarine.

In general trends are centred on romantic styles for girls and retro smart for boys.

For girls ruffles, big collar details, lots of lace trims and frills at necklines and shoulders are favoured, colours are bright or soft sorbets. Lilac, yellow, soft green, sky blue mix with bolder primaries. Cuts are easy to wear with loose skirts and relaxed shapes not following the body consciousness of current adult fashion.

Tie dye, fruity prints, florals, and retro inspirations are current. There is a move to interesting knitwear and rainbow stripes. Small animal cartoon style prints are still in style. In general not much has changed but there is a freshness to approach.

What is clear is that Kids fashion is back after an uncertain period and hopefully building on this summer the trade fairs can re-assert themselves as the best place to see and buy the new styles once more. Pitti Bimbo released statistics showing a very respectable 3,000 visitors came to this June edition.

Boys often get the short straw when fashion is concerned, for many years a dinosaur or a tractor plonked on a navy or bottle green top was considered enough for the market but with menswear expanding and becoming ever more experimental it’s good to see some of the same adventurous spirit invading boyswear too.

The fashion features popular designer brands such as The Animals Observatory, The New Society and Raspberry Plum mixed with vintage styles from Petit Pays Vintage.

Subtitled The World of ASMR, this is the UK’s first ever exhibition on ASMR which stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.

Inducing tingles, tranquility, deep calm and euphoria, this is the design story of an evolving internet sensation through a series of audio, visual and tactile works.

The first appearance was around 2009 and the methods now have millions of followers. Visitors can also learn about the man known as The Godfather of ASMR, Bob Ross, the calm and softly spoken TV artist whose landscape paintings series The Joy of Painting must have sent millions off to sleep!

Spooky tactile hands holding headphones and a weirdly bewitching moving tongue accentuate the visual and tactile encounters.

At the centre of it all is a softly carpeted arena made from a continuous crunchy pillow where you can view and listen through headphones various audio visual works or just sit and relax and chill while crunching the pillow in your hands.

This exhibition will have limited entry slots as when it was originally shown in Stockholm by ArkDes they found some people were so entranced they were lingering for four or five hours inside!

Sure to be a huge hit with young and older teens and twenties and those who love ASMR online, there’s even an interactive studio set up with microphones to record a little whispering and brushing track of your own.

The growth in kids fashion exhibitors with the new confidence of living with covid has enabled this prime childrens fashion trade fair to separate from the menswear Pitti Uomo after two tentative seasons and return to its well known and loved format.

All physical exhibitors will also be featured on the fairs digital platform Pitti Connect from the 18th May.

One highlight is the return of the Apartment section with collections destined for the most exclusive boutiques, and the arrival of the Pop Ups, special layouts for turning the spotlight on products that intersect with kids’ fashion.

With 194 brands signed up so far, of which 70% are from abroad this promises to be the most important edition of any of the kids trade shows since the covid lockdowns began.

Special news includes the return of the premium Italian label Miss Blumarine and the debut of Atelier Molayem Kids, a jewellery line expressly dedicated to children experienced as a tangible sign of love. Designer Stella Molayem, whose womens collections blend religious and non-religious symbols into a new aesthetic, has conceived a series of pieces for anniversaries or for an exchange of pieces between mother and daughter.

Areas will be divided into buyers special interest groups such as the return of ‘Apartment’ featuring high end creative kids fashion labels such as Paade Mode, Amelia et Sophie and Raspberry Plum.

‘I want to be Green’ a major factor on buyers interests these days featuring small ethical labels curated both in the Fortezza as well as on Pitti Connect by Dimitra Zavakou of the Little Pop Up Concept Store, Berlin.

‘Kids Lab’  is a funkier younger sister to Apartment featuring labels such as the ethical Infantium Victoria and Ancient Greek Sandals.

Finally 100% Bambino which concentrates a mix of classic, partywear and sports styles with an eclectic mix of labels including John Richmond and Julian MacDonald, Manila Grace Girl and well known Italian shoe brands such as Naturino.

Fashion brands featured for SS22 include Stella McCartney, Marni, Dior, Zimmerman, Monnalisa and other quality labels such as Bleu Comme Gris and Coco au Lait.

Many items have come from influencer families and are barely worn. Kidswear Collective was one of the first sites launched into the pre-loved, recycled area and has excellent connections for sourcing resale kids fashion and excess stock from premium brands.

Founder Shoshana Kazab is an industry veteran with great connections. Her collaborations aim to support the re-use, sustainability and the circularity of fashion. A minimum of 2.5% of all sale proceeds are donated to the NSPCC.

Not only is this an economical way to dress kids in a cool vibe, the quality of the brand fashion is such that you can then resale again when your child has outgrown for a fully circular sustainable approach.

I featured the winter selection here and there will still be some late winter buys available if the kids have had a sudden growth spurt!

Modernity is in the volume shapes used for girlswear this season with nostalgic traces used in Broderie Anglaise and ladder stitch cotton.

Peplums and frill edged important collars combined with elastic channelled bodices mould a feminine silhouette with a funky edge. There’s a definite Bridgerton air to the puffed sleeves and bodices, that’s the updated Netflix version, not the original novel!

The Middle Daughter has been successfully presenting online during the sales period to overseas buyers for FW22 and has yet to return to the European trade fairs, feeling it was too soon to go back in January. Let’s see what the summer brings as I think we are all keen to get back together now.

Now renamed Vogue France by Conde Nast the US owners, Vogue Paris had an independent view of its own from the American publishers and has often carved a controversial path with photography and artist profiles. This is the the first illustrated history of Vogue Paris from its debut edition in 1920 to its centenary in 2020.

It’s a look at the magazine as a historical document, the way we were and would be instructive for any fashion student brought up on social media as a longer in depth study. Also a history lesson which places the fashion in context of events in the larger world.

Work featured includes distinguished illustrators such as Lepape and photographers including Man Ray and Mario Testino, iconic faces like Catherine Deneuve and Audrey Hepburn and, of course, it showcases the fashion designers who defined the century – Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, McQueen, and many more.

Too often these days the past of the fashion world is selectively edited by social media and too many great photographers and designers are being forgotten in favour of those whose profile fleetingly fits a trend of the moment.

Full of inspiration, not just a glossy picture book but with plenty to read too, this is one to snuggle up on the sofa with for the holidays.
