With the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) Mumbai, set to open in a few days, official sources as well as transport experts have begun questioning whether travelling down the spectacular roadway will save peak-hour commuters as much time as the government had earlier promised it would. With the speed limit reduced from 80 kmph to 50 kmph, it appears that initially at least not much time will be saved by using the roadway.

The government had promised that taking the link during peak hours would save motorists about half an hour, cutting travel time between the Bandra flyover and Love Grove Junction, Worli, down from 35 minutes to 7 minutes. However, experts said that taking into account approach roads, diversions, curves and the reduced speed limit on the sea link, it could take around 25 minutes for commuters to reach Love Grove Junction from the Bandra flyover, which means the time saved would be just 10 minutes.

Motorists could end up coughing up Rs 50 as toll to save just 10 minutes. The state has spent Rs 1,634 crore to build the sea link. The money was spent on building the link’s approach and exit roads, the 4 lanes of the BWSL and another 4 lanes between Bandra and Worli that will open later when the Worli-Haji Ali section is completed.

Currently, the distance between the Bandra flyover and Love Grove Junction is 7.7 km. On the BWSL route, the approach road at Bandra is 2 km, the BWSL itself is 4.7 km and the exit at Worli is 1 km. This too adds up to 7.7 km.

The state had said that 13 to 15 kmph is the average peak-hour speed on the existing route from Bandra flyover to Love Grove Junction and that an 80 kmph speed limit would prevail on the sea link. With such a high speed limit, it would take 7 minutes to travel the link.

However, the speed limit has now been reduced to 50 kmph. While Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) superintending engineer Vivek Ghanekar agreed that this means it would now take 10 minutes to travel the sea link, experts and other MSRDC sources put the figure closer to 13 minutes. They said that there would be more vehicles on the sea link than initially expected and curves at the Bandra and Worli ends would force motorists to drive slower.

If it takes 13 minutes to travel the BWSL (and that doesn’t account for ramps or toll booths), it could take another 5 minutes to travel the access road at the Bandra end and 7 minutes to exit at Worli, experts said. Hence the actual journey from Bandra to Worli could be 25 minutes, just 10 minutes less than the existing morning peak-hour journey and 13 minutes less than the evening journey.

It would take 7 minutes at the Worli end because commuters may face traffic chaos. Earlier, traffic was to be diverted to Thadani Junction, but now it will be sent northwards before a portion is sent back south to Thadani Junction and another portion is sent to Love Grove Junction. It could take 7 minutes if traffic police handle the flow properly.

MSRDC expects more than 4,000 vehicles on the link during peak hours, but transport expert anticipates a fall in users once the novelty of the roadway wears off. The luxury of a stress-less and peaceful drive would hit roadblocks at the Worli and Bandra ends, where people would lose what they gained on the link. People may not find the drive worth Rs 50 for as the net gain would be nominal and minimal.

Transport expert Ashok Datar expressed similar scepticism, saying, “Whether paying Rs 50 is worth it will be decided when travel time is actually lowered and peace of mind increased. Also, vehicles will have to slow down at the Worli and Bandra ends due to sharp turns.”
(Source : Times of India)

Key Features:

11.1 Megapixel Resolution
The Super CCD VIII HR Sensor of the FinePix S100fs provides 11.1 Megapixels of effective resolution to capture the world around you in vivid color and lavish detail, enabling you to print, enlarge and even crop your images in any fashion you choose.

14.3x Wide-angle Optical Zoom
Bring your subject closer and clearer with high quality Fujinon lens technology. The Finepix S100fs features a Fujifilm 14.3x Optical Zoom with a focal range equivalent of 28 - 400mm (35mm equivalent) - making the camera perfect for family vacations, nature photography, and sporting events.

Dual Image Stabilization
The FinePix S100fs gives you the best of both worlds where image stabilization is concerned. With industry standard mechanical image stabilization, the photographer’s hand is steadied for a clearer, blur free shot. Add to that the addition of Fujifilm’s Picture Stabilization Technology, and increase clarity and sharpness is achieved, even in low light conditions or when shooting moving subjects. The combination of the two is the ultimate in stabilization technology.

Face Detection with Auto Red Eye Removal
The S100fs features the advanced Face Detection 2.0 system to significantly improve your picture taking by identifying human subjects’ faces in the frame and in real time, determining the optimal focus and exposure settings for the absolute best results possible in any shooting conditions. After the shot is captured the Auto Red Eye Removal feature instantly corrects red-eye problems right in the camera automatically, saving you from the time-consuming process of fixing Red-eye in your PC after the image is downloaded.

Extended Dynamic Range
The S100fs features extended Dynamic Range (100%, 200%, 400%) providing a dynamic range that is similar to that of negative film. Originally developed for Fujifilm’s S5Pro DSLR the extended Dynamic range is made possible by the use of the innovative Super CCD VIII "HR" image sensor combined with the latest "RP (Real Photo ) Processor III image processor. The wider Dynamic Range prevents over exposure and under exposure, allowing photographers to capture every nuance of highlight and shadow - even in high contrast scenes.

Film Simulation Modes
The Film Simulation Modes allow photographers to select a film-like character for the scene with a choice of four modes: "Velvia", "Provia", "Soft", and "Portrait". Each mode offers a subtle but unique change in tone and color reproduction, emulating the original qualities of the highly regarded Fujifilm professional film products that inspire professional photographers the world over.

High-speed Continuous Shooting
The High Speed Continuous Shooting mode of the S100fs is perfect for seizing the moment - providing up to 50 frames to be captured in quick succession, at up to 7 frames per second. This capability is great for catching that perfect moment in sports or any activity where that memorable shot can come and go quickly.

Multi Bracketing Functions
Fujifilm’s Multi Bracketing functions; "Dynamic Range Bracketing", "Film Simulation Bracketing", and "Auto Exposure Bracketing" automatically vary the settings, over three frames, taken continuously with a single shutter release, so photographers can concentrate on getting the perfect shot, and decide later which image best captures the moment. The Film Simulation bracketing function produces three images using the Velvia, Provia and Soft modes; Dynamic Range bracketing produces three images using different Dynamic Range settings (100%, 200%, 400%); and the AE bracketing mode provides continuous capture of three frames with exposure ranging up to ±1.0EV steps.

2.5" Tilting LCD Display
The large, 2.5" high-resolution LCD display can be freely moved 90° upwards and 45° downwards, offering flexible shooting positions for easier capture at low or high angles . The sophisticated icon-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides unique features like on-screen user assist functions, and the Micro Thumbnail mode that displays 100 thumbnails at a time. Furthermore, the LCD is coated with a Wide View film that offers an expanded viewing angle to facilitate creative composition and comes in handy for viewing and sharing your pictures. Plus an anti-glare coating on the surface also makes it easier to see the LCD screen in bright light or outdoor shooting and viewing situations.

Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)
In addition to the 2.5-inch LCD, the FinePix S100fs gives you the option of framing your shots through a bright, clear electronic viewfinder (EVF) using a 0.2" FLCD display with a refresh rate of 60 frames per second, so images in the viewfinder appear smooth and natural, and camera status info is incredibly clear.

High-speed Playback & Micro Thumbnail View
The High-Speed Preview function allows you to immediately view the entire content of your memory card, making it easy to retrieve the image you want. With this function, pictures can be played back at speeds of 10 fps and can be used to stream a sequence of shots taken in continuous shooting mode so it’s like viewing a movie. The high-resolution LCD can display up to 100 thumbnail images simultaneously in 10×10 array, so you can quickly find and select specific photos to view or print.

Built-in Memory and Dual Media Compatibility
The FinePix S100fs includes an impressive 25MB of built-in memory so you’ll be able to begin shooting, right out of the box. Plus the camera memory can be expanded to over 2GB with either xD-Picture Card or the popular Secure Digital (SD) and even higher capacities are possible with Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Memory Cards.

The FinePix S100fs will be available at all retail stores with 3 years warranty and will be priced at Rs. 35,000.

To call him an ‘icon’ would only give us a glimpse of a fraction of what he was. Jackson was a historic figure that the world over let into their lives, their language, their parties and their dance moves.

The tragedy of Jackson’s death at 50, reportedly from cardiac arrest, caps a career full of larger-than-life incidents. He was Wacko Jacko, the Moon walker, the Man in the Mirror. He was Bad but not Dangerous. Off The Wall and yet the guy who most of us tried to emulate on the dance floor when we were small. In the end, wipe away the three decades of plastic surgeries that deformed him, erratic behavior that made his name synonymous with the warping powers of fame and the child abuse trial, and what you have left is a child who never really grew up.

Michael Jackson was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984. There are actually two stars bearing the name Michael Jackson in the walk, the other being that of the Los Angeles talk radio show host of the same name; while Jackson’s name is marked with a record icon, the radio Jackson is denoted with a microphone icon. Jackson had a notable impact on music and culture throughout the world. He broke down racial barriers, transformed the art of the music video and paved the way for modern pop music in his own country. Jackson’s work, distinctive musical sound and vocal style have influenced hip hop, pop and R&B artists, including Mariah Carey, Usher,Britney Spears, Justin Timberlakeand R. Kelly. For much of his career, he had an "unparalleled" level of worldwide influence over the younger generation through his musical and humanitarian contributions.

Throughout his career he received numerous honors and awards, including the World Music Awards’ Best-Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium, the American Music Award’s Artist of the Century Award and the Bambi Pop Artist of the Millennium Award. He was a double-inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1997 and later as a solo artist in 2001. Jackson was also an inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. His awards include multiple Guinness World Records (eight in 2006 alone), 13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles in his solo career—more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era—and the sale of over 750 million records worldwide, making him the world’s best selling male solo pop artist.

He was characterized as "an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the tools to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility and loads of sheer star power". In the mid-1980s, Time described Jackson as "the hottest single phenomenon since Elvis Presley". By 1990, Vanity Fair had already cited Jackson as the most popular artist in the history of show business.Daily Telegraph writer Tom Utley called him an "extremely important figure in the history of popular culture" and a "genius".His total lifetime earnings from royalties on his solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements have been estimated at $500 million; some analysts have speculated that his music catalog holdings could be worth billions of dollars.Cited as one of the world’s most famous men, Jackson’s highly publicized personal life, coupled with his successful career, made him a part of popular culture for almost four decades.

On June 25, 2009, Jackson collapsed at a rented home in Holmby Hills in Los Angeles. Attempts at resuscitating him by his personal physician were unsuccessful.Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics received a 911 call at 12:21 pm ,and arrived nine minutes later at Jackson’s location. He was reportedly not breathing and CPR was performed. Resuscitation efforts continued both en route to the UCLA Medical Center, and for an hour further after arriving at approximately 1:14 pm .He was noted to have already been in cardiac arrest by the paramedics who attended his house.Jackson was pronounced dead at about 2:26 pm local time. The cause of death has not been determined. Many news organizations were generally very cautious about the initial reports of his death.

This month MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) students, from Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, have successfully flight tested the prototype of a winged car for the first time. This car took off from a runway. An American company Terrafugia Transition, based near Boston, is set to unveil the dual-purpose car-cum-plane vehicle called "the flying car" as early as 2011. The two-seater vehicle can let you fly if you wish to avoid the congested city traffic.

If you want to drive on the road, just touch the road. The vehicle will fold up its wings in 30 seconds and transform itself into a car."The Flying Car" can travel up to 725 kilometres in the air at a speed of more than 115 kilometres per hour. Fuelled by gasoline, it has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight. With its wings folded, it can be parked in your ordinary car garage. What it can’t do, legally, is take off and land from anywhere other than an approved general aviation airport. The company claims its flying vehicle can soar 400 miles through the air on a single tank of gas, the Daily Mail reported.Meanwhile refueling involves no more than driving into the nearest forecourt and filling up with unleaded petrol.

The CEO of the company told Canadian TV (CTV) network, that they have successfully test-flown "The Flying Car" as many as 28 times. The tests have shown that the vehicle can drive, fly and switch from being a plane to a car in just 30 seconds.

"It (testing) has been very successful,"Carl Dietrich, co-founder and CEO of Terrafugia, told the television network. " We have got a very good handling vehicle and our test pilot said that the flights were just remarkably unremarkable - it just flies like a really nice, little airplane,”he said. The Transition "roadable aircraft" has made a successful maiden flight, according to Terrafugia, the company that is developing it.Media were not present at the airstrip in Plattsburgh, NY when the test took place, but the company has released photos and videos chronicling the event.

He said this miracle vehicle will ease problems for pilots who currently face problems like weather which sometimes doesn’t allow them to take off or land. "This vehicle allows a pilot any time, if the weather changes, to divert to the nearest airport, fold up their wings and drive safely under the weather."

"The Transition (the name for "The Flying Car") is not designed to replace the automobile. However, it will solve transportation issues for a variety of circumstances,” company vice president Richard Gersh said. Its initial cost is expected to be around $200,000 (nearly Rs.1 crore), says the company which has already orders for 60 vehicles.

Asked whether the vehicle will be mass produced one day, he said: "That is certainly a possibility, but a number of years away." He said the vehicle will be able travel on ordinary roads.

"Our depositors represent a wide-cross section in terms of age, interests, and intended use of the vehicle. We have deposits from both experienced pilots and non-pilots who intend to earn their Sport Pilot certificate," said the vice president of Terrafugia.

Terrafugia is set up in 2006 and run by trained aeronautical engineers and MBAs from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Ratha Yatra , one of the famous indian temple festival , is celebrated in Puri in the state of Orissa. It has a famous shrine of Krishna in the form of Jagannath, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In honour of Lord Jagannath, the people celebrate the “Car Festival” on the Bright Fortnight of Ashadha (June - July), which is also known as the Ratha Yatra. Thus, this Ratha Yatra is a yearly celebration of the original chariot festival of Jagannath Puri in Orissa.

This event marks Lord Jagannath, travelling in the chariot with his brother, Lord Balaram and sister Subhadra. It attracts pilgrims and visitors from all over the world.About a million devotees from different parts of the country and abroad on Wednesday witnessed the spectacle of world famous Car festival of Lord Jagannath at Puri braving blazing sun and blistering heat wave.

Puri Rath Yatra is a mega procession that is organized at Puri, the temple town of Orissa. It is held every year in the month of June-July and lasts for about ten days. During the procession, the idols of lord Jagannatha, Balabhadra and goddess Subhadra, the deities of the Sri Mandira, are taken out. Thousands of devotees transfer the deities in their respective chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. For seven days, the deities stay at the Gundicha Temple and then return to Sri Mandira.

The Rath Yatra of Puri is also popular as Gundicha Yatra, Navadina Yatra, Ghosa Yatra, Dasavatara Yatra and so on. The Jagannath Rath Yatra holds much significance for the devotees. A glimpse of lord Jagannath on the chariot is considered very auspicious. It is also believed that if one gets an opportunity to touch the chariot, or even the ropes, then that person is absolved of sacrament for ages. The three deities are given a ritual bath on the Snan Vedi (an open platform), almost a fortnight before the Rath Yatra. Three chariots are decorated and lined on the day before the procession. On the day of the procession, the priests take out the festooned idols to the chariots. The first deity to come out is Lord Balabhadra, then Goddess Subhadra and the last and most-awaited Lord Jagannath. After the ceremony, Gajapati (the ceremonial king of Puri) comes and expresses his humility before God. With a golden broom, he cleans the chariots and showers holy water on them. After that, the procession of three deities towards the Gundicha Temple starts.

The energy and enthusiasm with which Rath Yatra is celebrated is simply outstanding. It all starts when the idols of the three deities, Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, are taken out in a procession. Listen to the sudden increase in the prayer chants of the people as the idols are brought to the three magnificent chariots waiting outside the temple. The chariots themselves are one of the main attractions of the festival. Humongous in size, the chariots are decorated extravagantly. Chariot carrying Lord Jagannatha is called Nandighosh Rath, chariot carrying Lord Balabhadra is called Taladvaja Rath, and chariot carrying Goddess Subhadra is named Padmadhvaja Rath. The chariots are not similar in build either. The number of wheels and the size of the chariots differ.

After seating all the idols, which itself takes hours, the traditional king sweeps the chariot with a golden broom. With this starts the pulling of the chariots by thousands of devotees. The chariots are taken to Gundicha Mandir which is located 3 km from Jagannatha Temple. All along the way, the devotees stand wherever they can find space, to get a glimpse of the deities. The atmosphere is simply magical and will take you deep into the feeling of devotion. After 8 days, the images of the deities are taken back to Jagannatha Temple from Gundicha Mandir in the same way they were brought here.

Unprecedented security arrangements had been made to ensure smooth conduct of the festival. Around 55 platoons of state armed police forces and two platoons of Rapid Action Force led two inspector generals were pressed into service to maintain law and order. Besides, close circuit television cameras, sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads were also deployed at crucial points.

The district administration had stockpiled 16 lakh water pouches which were distributed to the people by school students and volunteers. Water was sprinkled in the crowded areas on the Grand Road to help people fight the extreme heat conditions.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his ministerial colleagues were seen present in Puri to witness the annual Rath Yatra festival. After their nine-day sojourn in Sri Gundicha temple, the deities will return to their temple. During Rath Yatra, people irrespective or their caste, colour and religion are allowed to see and touch Lord Jagannath.

The East Coast Railways (ECR) ran at least 66 special trains from different parts of the country to enable devotees to reach Puri. For the first time the Puri railway station offered Janata Khana (food for devotees) at Rs 10 per meal, as announced by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Rath Yatra 2009 Has Been Celebrated Worldwide on 24th June 2009. Large number of Devotees gathered to Celebrate the much anticipated Rath Yatra - Chariot Festival - Car Festival - Ghosa Jatra of Lord Jagannath. The scorching heat also could not stop the people from pulling the Chariots. Different Cultural programs were also performed along with Prasad Sevan at several places Worldwide.

What’s a book review? And what makes a book review good or bad? The first question has a simple answer. A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and originality. Its length can vary from a single paragraph to a substantial essay. But what makes a book review good is totally up to the reader – personal taste. While some may prefer a short plot summary, some may prefer a long essay on the concepts presented in the book, along with the author’s personal opinions.

Writing book reviews is actually very hard and requires the utmost attention to detail as well as an encompassing knowledge of other literary works. The reviewer must analyze even the faintest clues, implied meanings provided by the book author, decide on their importance and meaningfulness to the story. He has to address complex issues such as plagiarism and decide on the validity of the ideas and points expressed.

Below I’ve compiled a list of the best book review sites.

1.The New York Times.com:

The New York Times presents us with book reviews situated somewhere in the middle, between a plot summary and a ten page essay, with most reviews situated around 1000 words. The quality varies from writer to writer but most of them provide an insightful view for the proto-reader. They have one of the largest number of reviews, which means you’re going to visit them sooner or later. Overall, The New York Times Book section receives a warm recommendation.

Also worth mentioning – capturing almost the same type of writing and quality – are the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and The Telegraph.

2.AllReaders.com:

There are a zillion book review sites out there, but this is different! For starters, it classify books based on plot, setting, character, and writing style. Therefore, if you know what kind of book you like, you can find other authors who write similar kind of stories.

For example, if you like murder mysteries involving the murder of lawyers, you can use detailed search to specifically search for all books involving murder mysteries where the victims are lawyers. If you prefer romances involving love triangles or love polygons, you can search all romances in it’s database to find all books that have that kind of plot. Just remember when searching that each genre (Literature, Romance, Mystery, etc.) has its own unique search engine, so be sure you’re in the genre you want to do the searching in.

The site is unique in that reviews are more useful than those of most other sites. Usually people will write variations of "Book good!" or "Characters good!" which is useless to readers who do not know what the reviewer’s taste is. This site’s reviews will give us the general outline of the plot. Some would say this is "giving too much away"; I say this is giving us some idea of what the book is all about. It is unique approach of helping us find just the book we were looking for. This site drives over two million visitors a month.

3.BookReview.com:

It is the goal of the collective energy behind BookReview.com to expose the general public to reviews of books that may, at times, be overlooked due to lack of marketing, odd subjects, unknown authors or saturation of the market. The site offer unbiased, book reviews from a variety of publishers on a multitude of subjects and genres.

From this site you can learn more about all of the new childrens’, young adult non-fiction, young adult fiction, horror, history, self-help, true crime, new age, classic, computer, adventure, western, science fiction, speculative fiction, humor, travel, music, medical and nutrition books.

4.Reviewsofbooks.com:

This site was launched in June 2002, reviews for books older than that won’t be found on this site. It’s not possible to find every newly released book on this site. The minimum requirement is that any book has to have three reviews in major online media web sites and then it’s a completely subjective process as to which books get added to this site. Some of the books choosen on this site are popular, others are literary, and some are a bit out of the ordinary, but intriguing. If there’s a recent book that you’d like to see added to the site, send an e-mail at books@reviewsofbooks.com. If you’re interested in having your own book added or reviewed on this site, please see there review policy. This site is an amazon associate site.

5.BookPage.com:

BookPage gives us a consistent library of well written book reviews, including a section on children’s books, blogs and a newsletter. Nothing remarkable, but still worth a read.

6.BookReporter.com:

Just slightly better organized than the other sites I visited, bookreporter.com hosts reviews about 500 words long, polls, blogs and various contests aimed at the diligent reader.

You can post in the comments suggestions on other sites you’d like to read before buying a book as well as you could even recommend me a book! Enjoy!!!
