What I love the most with working from home is the freedom to work at my own pace. I am also lucky to have a boss who encourages his staff to take time off every three months to recharge. And because I love to travel, I did not pass up the opportunity to take a break.

I was thinking, where to go this time? I've been to Boracay, Mindoro and Bohol. I guess it's about time to head up north. I checked Philippine Airlines website and lucky me there's something for me.

Fort Ilocandia Resort and Casino is a 77 hectare resort with numerous recreational activities. Although Fort Ilocandia is not located within the city, you do not really need to go out because they have everything you need within the facility. Considering this is a five star hotel, the price is not friendly for those traveling on a budget. You'll enjoy your stay here if you are willing to splurge. Majority of the guests here are tourists from Hongkong and Taiwan. They go here mainly to gamble at the Casino.

There was a convention on the day of my arrival at the resort. The rooms are fully booked. I was told there were 500 guests attending the convention. We were actually on the same plane with some of the participants. I had my reservation online and was lucky to get a room. I was kinda worried that the check in process will take a while since I arrived at the hotel with the convention participants. It was such a relief when I handed the receptionist of my booking confirmation, she took out a folder of my file, ask me to fill up the form, then handed me my electronic keycard. They have already assigned a room. Very efficient!

The rooms are outdated but clean. I think the management does not put too much effort in improving the rooms because most of the Chinese guests come to Fort Ilocandia to gamble at the Casino.

There is also no problem with the use of the facilities. It does not feel like we were sharing the resort with 500 other guests. Amongst the numerous recreational activities available, we tried the shooting range, the driving range, ATV, tennis and swimming. The wind was not cooperative and sadly we were not able to ride the hot air balloon.

I was kinda nervous to drive this at first. But I always want to try something new whenever I travel. And I want to experience this activity with my husband.

I was driving really slow but my husband is such a sweetheart he did not keep me out of his sight because he knows I'm nervous.

I eventually enjoyed driving the ATV but by then my fifteen minutes is over.

Hubby brought his Wilson and my Prince tagged along. We had a complimentary one hour use of the tennis court. The court is actually in a bad condition but playable.

I thought golf is easy to play. I thought watching Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will somehow make me good at this.

It was a wonderful experience. I did not really enjoy but I'm glad I tried.

Yeah, he loved this activity. :D

We weren't able to swim at the beach because of the strong waves during our stay.

Nobody else here but me and hubby. The way we like the beach to be. Just US.

We stayed on the cottage near the beach and waited for the beautiful sunset.

The food in the restaurants are delicious but expensive. The serving is generous though. The only downside, there is not much choice on the menu. We stayed there for 4 days and only two restaurants are operational. The complimentary buffet breakfast is delectable. A wide array of food is available. I love the congee! BTW, the chinese restaurant serves authentic chinese food. Sumptuous!

Fort Ilocandia Resort and Casino exceeded my expectations. We enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back again.

Courageous Mother, Wife and Survivor of Mesothelioma

My seven-year-old daughter often amazes people with her views on cancer. While other children her age are blissfully ignorant of cancer, my daughter has a unique perspective. She will announce, in a very automatic and matter-of-fact way, that she saved her mommy’s life. This may seem hard to believe that a child could have saved her mother’s life, but it is absolutely true.

It all started a few years ago. I was 35, and my husband and I had been married for seven years without having any children. We just weren’t in a rush to start a family and wanted to make sure that we were ready, but Cameron and I had decided that the time was right. I was scared because I was a little older when we started trying, but we were thrilled to discover that we were pregnant after only three months. I was so excited, scared and nervous all at once. I had so many questions about the future, my child and what kind of mother I would be. One thing I knew was that I wanted to be the best mother possible.

I was blessed with a smooth pregnancy. I joked that I could easily have 10 kids if all of my pregnancies were so easy. The delivery was a little more interesting and exciting. Lily was breech, and I had to undergo an emergency C-section. An eternal optimist, I simply joked that my child would have a perfect, beautiful round head. After she was born and placed in my arms, the emotions were overwhelming. Amazed that she was finally here, all I wanted to do was stare at her and take in all of her perfect little features. I know that I would protect her, teach her and provide her with everything she would ever need. I couldn’t wait to start nurturing, teaching and coaching her. I was filled with love for her, and nothing else mattered when she was in my arms. Those moments were so blissful and peaceful, and I could never have imagined that things would soon change for our family.

Lily was 3 ½-months-old when we visited the doctor and I was given devastating news. I was a new mother with a beautiful little girl, and yet I was being given only 15 months to live. I had malignant pleural mesothelioma, and there was no hope for recovery without drastic treatment. While I started trying to digest the news and try to grasp with the concept of leaving my family behind, my husband was busy getting the information we needed. He is the one who talked with the doctor about the treatment plan and made important decisions about how we would fight this problem. I thank God that he was there with me that day, and I know that he made the right decision to pursue a radical treatment. It would start with a trip to Boston where they would remove my left lung along with the lining of my heart and diaphragm. The procedure was extreme, but it was my best bet for survival. I would spend 18 days in the hospital recovering and another two weeks in an outpatient facility in Boston. During this time, Lily would stay with my parents in South Dakota. When I was well enough to travel, I would join here there to recover for two months while I built up enough strength to return home for chemotherapy and radiation.

The thought of leaving my daughter during this time broke my heart. I thought of all the moments I would miss with her, and I knew that those weeks in Boston would seem like an eternity. However, it was an easy decision to make in some ways. I lost a few weeks now to enjoy many years with Lily, or I would be gone before her second birthday. My daughter needed me, and I decided that I would not leave her without doing everything I could to beat the cancer and heal. It was my daughter who gave me the strength to keep moving forward and fight. It was my love for her that helped me make the hard choices and go through the radical treatment. Without her in my life, I don’t believe I would be here today.

The fact is that mesothelioma is a devastating disease that kills almost 95 percent of all people diagnosed with it. The chances of surviving were never in my favor, but I had a baby girl to fight for. I knew that she would need me as she grew, and I was determined to be there for her.

The road was never easy, but the rewards have been worth the difficult journey. My daughter may have only been a baby when I was diagnosed, but she saved my life, and I will forever be grateful to her for that.

Vikings: A Feast in SM Marikina

My friends from Chinabank days (my first employer after graduation) make it a point to meet up at least once a year. Eversince the four of us turned our back from the corporate world and pursued different careers, it is very difficult to squeeze into each other's busy schedule. We have planned this Vikings date a month ago but had to reschedule. And sadly, Michelle wasn't able to join us.

I live in the nearby Antipolo but it has been years since I last visited SM Marikina. I've been hearing raves about Vikings in SM and it was Anne who suggested that we dine here.

Nice, 'no? I was not expecting it to be this grand. And it gets better once you step inside.

Although they accept walk-ins, I recommend that you make a prior reservation unless you are willing to wait or share a table with other groups that don't have reservations. Guests started arriving around 11am. A few minutes later, almost all the tables were occupied. And it's a weekday!! I repeat, you must reserve in advance! :-)

Angela advised me before to reserve the maki on the last round. But out of habit, I headed towards the Japanese Food Station. When I saw the colorful makis, I could not resist. I convinced myself that getting a few pieces won't take up much space. Anyways, I don't plan on eating rice later.

At least I managed not to get a second serving.

She also told me to stay away from soup. But this Corn Soup with Seafood is worth defying her.

For my entree, I had a thick slice of US Roast Beef, Lechon Kawali and Chicken Alfredo Roll

From the Chinese Food Station, I had in my plate hakaw (yum!), mushroom, pata tim, pork siomai, smoked sausage and sweet and sour chicken.

There's a fresh seafood section. I saw someone requested the chef to grill some squids. Sadly, there's no lobsters or crabs.

My plate before dessert -- oyster, quiche, chicken galantina, assorted cold cuts and deviled egg.

I'm not a dessert person. If you have a sweet tooth -- Vikings is a paradise. As for me, Mango Panna Cotta, Chocolate Mousse and Blueberry Cheesecake sufficed.

I'm not a big eater but what I had was worth the price I paid. And we left Vikings gastronomically satisfied.

I have passed by the kiosk of JNBM Paper Clay Art in Robinson's Metro East a couple of times. I've been wanting to try this Paper Clay Art but I'm afraid it will end up a mess. I think I have some drops of art skills in my blood but I'm afraid to fail. Until I can no longer contain my curiosity. I bought a simple kit.

I opted to bring home the kit. You can actually start the art right there at the store. They provide chairs and tables.

This is also a great activity for kids. Paper Clay Art is so easy even the young ones will enjoy and have fun. See my nephew? He actually finished his art way ahead of me.

J. CO Donuts

Curious me must find out what the long queue is all about. Friday is coding day and I've got an hour to waste so I went to J.CO SM Megamall. I think there's thirty donut lovers in front of me patiently waiting for their turn. The main reason why the queue gets very long is the inability to meet the demand. At first I thought, is this a marketing strategy? Have a long queue, more people (like me) will get curious and then later find our there really isn't anything extraordinary with the donuts. But then I realized, unlike Dunkin' Donuts, Go Nuts Donuts and Krispy Kreme, J. CO's donuts are so freshly baked. Well, you have to wait though but at least you see your donut being made in front of you. I actually enjoyed watching the crew preparing the donuts :D

These are the only variants available when it was my turn. I don't want to wait for 15 more minutes for the other variants.

L.A. Diner

One of the reasons why I love the location of our new home is the proximity of places to eat. A new restaurant along Greenheights Newton Subdivision is L.A. Diner. It is occupying the building which was previously a factory of Camp Beverly Hills apparel.

I've dined here five times already. There was even I time I went here on foot. It was a ten minute walk from where I live.

During our first visit, we were surprised with how the former CBH store was transformed into this cozy diner. When I saw the menu, I can't seem to decide what to order. I like almost everything. I was with my husband and sisters and we ordered as much as we can possibly eat.

The NACHOS are generously topped with ground beef, chopped tomatoes, chopped onions and cheese. This starter costs P195 ($4.90).

An order of BUFFALO WINGS will cost you P185 ($4.60). I want my buffalo wings to be spicy. LA Diner's version is a mix of sweet and mild spiciness. I was kinda disappointed though that the wings have traces of blood. I never ordered this again on our next visits.

This is GRILLED FRANKFURTER. This is actually served with onions, pickles , mayonnaise, catsup and cheddar cheese. We requested for a simple mayo and catsup. This comes with a generous serving of french fries. The sandwich costs P135 ($3.40).

The LA DINER PIZZA is topped with beef, ham, pepperoni, bell pepper, onion, mushroom and mozzarella cheese. We ordered the family size priced at P295 ($7.40).

I like this the most. A quarter pound patty HAMBURGER with french fries on the side. This costs P155 (S3.90). I paid an additional P10 for the cheese.

We ordered an extra serving of french fries for P50 ($1.25).

I was not able to take a picture of the BABY BACK RIBS which is so tender and yummy and my favorite WINTERMELON MILK TEA.

Except for my disappointed with the BUFFALO WINGS, LA Diner is a great place to hang out and satisfy your cravings. I've been here five times already and I think I'll be back soon.

I Can See Clearly Now

I was not able to update my website in the past four days because I am almost useless without my eyeglasses. I am nearsighted. And I need eyeglasses to aid my poor vision of 425-425! I anticipated the problem and bought a pair of contact lens that I could use while waiting for my eyeglasses but after using the lens for 5 hours my eyes got irritated. I attended two sessions of aerodance with a very blurry vision.

Got my Hello Kitty eyeglasses from Executive Optical in SM Masinag. I used to switch from one optical shop to another but eversince I tried the services of Executive Optical last 2011, I only but my contact lens, solutions and eyeglasses from them. I like that they have an online database system of my record and of their inventory. Very efficient. :D

I've been sporting this nail color in the past two weeks and the polish is already starting to chip off. I was contemplating last night whether I'll apply the same color or opt for something else. The Blue Chill is so perfect for summer. And it matches my iPod.

After breakfast, I had everything ready. I know I have to do this or I'll get lazy and start playing Candy Crush and I'll never be able to fix my nails.

A "must-have" for me -- Help My Finger is a calcium and pure vegetable oil infused formula which I use as a top coat. It provides nourishment for my nails. I use the Jelly Pop as a top coat to enhance the appearance of my nail polish. Both products are from Etude House.

I decided to go from Blue Chill to Fiery Red. I just want the scorching summer heat reflected in my nails.

Tada!!! My nails are now braver... fiercer.. bolder. Inspired by Laida Magtalas version 2.0 :D

Celebrating Mommy's Birthday

Today is mommy's 65th birthday. We decided to have a simple celebration instead of the swimming party we've been hosting in the past 10 years. We went to Loyola Memorial Park to bring some flowers and remember the fun moments with mommy. Then we had lunch at Mong Kok in Sta Lucia East Grand Mall.

The star of the feast is mommy's favorite pancit. This is Cantonese Chow Mein. An order is good for 3-4 persons.

While waiting for the main course, we had some appetizers from the dimsum cart. We indulge in some sharksfin dumpling, spareribs with taosi (picture above) and har gow (hakaw).

And just like on cue, the food started arriving one by one :D

I watched when a very special love changed the life of Laida Magtalas. Then I saw the teaser of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo's newest movie before the Holy Week. I got really excited. And it was great when I found out that my sisters were as excited.

Here's the teaser I was talking about..

The movie's first day screening was Black Saturday. As expected, moviegoers especially die-hard fans of the John Lloyd-Sarah love tandem rushed to cinemas. Me and my sisters decided to wait a week later before watching to avoid the long queue.

And so we watched this afternoon. I did not expect every seat in the cinema to be filled because it's a Monday and it's already the 2nd week of showing. But yeah, only a few seats were unoccupied. I'm not fond of watching again a movie I have already seen but this movie is one of the few included in my "must watch again" list.

I loved this movie because I learned something about forgiveness. I know there are lots of pa-kilig and patama quotes from John Lloyd and Sarah. But what really hit me was what Laida's mom told her about forgiveness.

Basta.

Seafood Bonding Extreme

Whenever I go to SM Masinag, I always see the poster of Seafood Island Northshore Grill near the carpark. Got me really curious what boodle is all about. And to satisfy the curious cat in me, we decided to have a boodle lunch.

We ordered the Dagupan' Pride Boodle Feast. The feast is consist of deep fried boneless bangus, pork bbq, steamed white shrimps, grilled tahong, grilled talong and okra, talbos ng camote with tomato, green mango, crispy liempo and bagoong rice. For P785 ($20) this feast can feed 2-3 persons.

Hongkong Gold Coast

I chose this hotel because I want to experience a different side of Hongkong. Located away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping district, the Hotel offers the relaxation I want.

We were appointed a corner room that offers a view of the marina on the left and the beach on the right. Way below is the view of the pool.

The room is very spacious. It has a living area and a balcony. I booked the room online and my only preference is a balcony. We were lucky to be upgraded to a corner room.

We arrived early in Hongkong and I requested for an early check in. As we were waiting for our room to be available, they took custody of our luggage so that we could explore the beautiful garden of the hotel.

This hotel is a favorite wedding venue in Hongkong.

We were not charged for the early check in. Internet use in their business center is also free of charge. The buffet breakfast was superb. The staff are very accommodating and helpful.

And yes, there's a beach nearby :D The only downside is that you are at the mercy of their shuttle service since it is located way far from the shopping district. Shuttle service from the Hotel to Tsim Sha Tsui costs HKD25 one way per person and the last trip is at 11pm. But if you don't mind spending for the transportation to go places, this hotel is great. We would still check in at this hotel when we return to Hongkong.

Whenever I travel, I always book with the flag carrier of my country. But during a recent trip to Hongkong, I could not find a good deal with my country's flag carrier so the next best option is to book with the flag carrier of the country I am visiting.

Cathay Pacific was founded in 1946. The name Cathay was derived from the ancient name of China, "Khitan" and Pacific from the vision that one day it will fly across the pacific. I'm a big fan of everything online. I'm glad the online booking on the carrier's website down to online check in was fuss free.

Like any other airlines, Cathay Pacific has a frequent flyer program. Actually, they have two. The Asia Miles which is the travel reward program and The Marco Polo Club, also known as The Club, which is the loyalty program.

I had a wonderful experience with Cathay Pacific and vowed to book with this airline the next time I visit Hongkong, Macau or China.

A favorite destination among Catholics during Holy Week is Kamay ni Hesus in Lucban, Quezon. Father Joseph "Joey" Faller, the Healing Priest, officiates Healing Mass here. The schedule of Healing Mass is every Wednesday and Saturday, 9:30am to 12 noon.

I believe that Father Joey has been instrumental to my mother's triumph from her breast cancer battle in 2002.

My dad went to Bulacan yesterday with his High School batchmates for their annual Bisita Iglesia. He brought home two of my favorite Bulacan pasalubong goodies -- inipit and pastillas.

Inipit is a custard-filled flat chiffon sandwich. Guiguinto, Bulacan is best known for this delicacy. The first time I have tasted Inipit was way back in college when my friend Josephine gave me a box of this yummy treat. The inipit that my dad brought home is from Eurobake. I saw from the box that it has branches in Metro Manila.

The best pastillas for me! My dad used to bring home this pastillas from Bulacan every Christmas when he was still working. This plainly wrapped dessert is stacked up in a chalkbox-like packaging.

The Bulacan pastillas has a smooth and creamy texture. Unlike other pastillas that are made from regular milk, this is made from carabao's milk. You'll easily notice the rich taste and the soft, melt in your mouth goodness.

Me and my friends got so addicted playing YoVille a few years ago. It's the Facebook app that I enjoyed the most. I was able to purchase twelve properties (lol!) and truckloads of furniture, decors and appliances.
