Last night, as I was browsing StumbleUpon, I found a very cool page on Mashable with resources to do practically everything online. The links range from podcasting to blogging, web development to life organization. This is definitely a page to be bookmarked as a reference for… well, anything. :)

Distraction While You Work

Freelancing has many advantages. You don’t have to deal with other people bothering you. You can ignore the day-to-day office politics. If you aren’t feeling well, you can just roll out of bed in your pajamas and get your work done that way. However, if your job consists of primarily working on the Internet, there are many websites that I like to label as distractions. I’ve compiled a list of sites that you should stay away from when you’re trying to get a job done:

Twitter. I love Twitter. However, if you’re following a lot of people, as I am, you can find yourself all over the Internet. Clicking on links of articles to read or pictures your followers have just posted. The site is based on the concept of answering the question: “What are you doing now?” Well, what are you doing now? You’re on Twitter and not working on your projects. :)
StumbleUpon. This site is great. If you’ve set up an account and selected your interests, then the stumbles will only be sites that appeal to you. Of course, if they appeal to you, then you will be browsing through all of the stumbles and hitting the “I like it!” button and not getting anything productive done. Awesome site, but stay away if you need to get a project done!
Facebook. You really shouldn’t be on here if you’re working on something. ‘Nuff said. (I’d say the same for Myspace, but I don’t use my account on there anymore.)
Reddit. Wow. Sometimes I will get bored with Reddit and then will just click on the Reddit button on my Bookmarks Toolbar to refresh.
Instant messenger programs. Okay, so this isn’t a website (unless you’re using something like meebo), but chatting with people about things that are completely unrelated to work or your projects, doesn’t get the job done any faster.

Of course, I am relatively new to the “freelancing” world so, I am learning new things day-to-day. Hopefully this post has educated you on what sites to stay away from when you need to get projects done. :)
