SUPRA has announced the limited release of the Spring Breakers Donavyn, the result of a collaboration between director Harmony Korine and his upcoming Spring Breakers film starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and James Franco.

Writer and director Harmony Korine is known for his screenplay ‘Kids’ and for directing Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Mister Lonely, and Trash Humpers. Korine’s unconventional approach to art, and his skateboard origins, have been an inspiration to SUPRA and were the motivation for doing this shoe.

The Spring Breakers Donavyn is a low top, redolent of a dress shoe. The hot pink and turquoise color-way was chosen as a nod to another ubiquitous Florida institution, the hit 80′s TV show Miami Vice. The upper is constructed from a unique, hot pink leather that looks shiny and wet like patent leather, but is actually a premium full-grain leather that technology has only recently been able to furnish with these kinds of extreme hues and textures—this is one of the first shoes in the world to feature this new material. It also has three pairs of laces (black, hot pink, and turquoise), a padded black mesh lining, and it’s constructed on a black vulcanized sole with a double layer of turquoise foxing. Only 100 pairs of the Spring Breakers Donavyn were created.

I must say, that although I get the look that they were trying to convey with this release…I am not a fan of this Supra kick!

Today comes the release of a limited edition Society designed by an acclaimed Los Angeles graffiti writer, Retna. Retna is a long time friend of SUPRA founder, Angel Cabada, and the pair’s long time creative relationship has resulted in this collaboration.

Retna’s work can be seen on the streets of Los Angeles where he grew up, but he emerged from the LA MOCA “Art In The Streets” show with “real” art world recognition. MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch said in Juxtapose, “All the best art is past, present, and future combined, and this is what Retna is doing.” The Michael Kohn Gallery, where Retna’s work was recently shown, described him as, “Simultaneously conceptual, literal and abstract…Retna’s work contains imagery and histories that are vast and diverse.

The symbols and pictographs of his signature script are inlaid with his multicultural background of El Salvadorian, Cherokee, Spaniard, Pipil, and African-American lineage.”

The extra high Society, with its Velcro straps, is draped in black painter’s suede with “SUPRA,” written in Retna’s complex hieroglyphic style, screened across the entire shoe in white.

Because of Retna’s history of working with charitable causes, a portion of the shoe’s proceeds will be donated to Plaza de la Raza, a community arts center in Los Angeles’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood devoted to art education.

Only 413 pairs of the Retna Society were created, sequentially numbered, and they will go on sale today, at Factory 413, SUPRA Paris, SUPRA NYC, and factory413.com.

There will be an in store event at Factory 413 in Los Angeles on February 9 with Retna in attendance.

SUPRA has collaborated with Germany’s premier premium sneaker emporium, SOLEBOX, to create the limited edition SOLEBOX Skytop III.

“We have been working closely with SUPRA,” stated SOLEBOX founder Hikmet Sugoer, “so we wanted to take it to the next level with our own project. The grey and lime green combo is based on the original SOLEBOX shop front from ten years ago, which had grey walls and a green SOLEBOX logo. And we chose this design for the Skytop III because it is one of our favorites from the SUPRA line.”

The SOLEBOX Skytop III upper is fitted with grey suede upper and green accents. The mid top, is has a glow-in-the-dark TPR cage, heel-pull, and outsole, all of which glow a bright green at night. The shoe also has a green microfiber tongue and padded lining. The kicks come with a custom screen printed lace bag with alternate green laces.

Personally I don’t really care for this release from Supra, unless you plan to walk around in the dark with them glowing (as that is the only time they look half decent); I wouldn’t be running out to cop these. They retail for $150.

Christmas colors will be donning the screen if you are able to catch one of the three players on the court that Nike has specially designed game sneakers for.

Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and LeBron James will be festive in their colorful signature kicks as they dash up and down the court on Christmas day.

The LeBron X made headlines earlier this year when it was reported that an enhanced version of sneaker would retail for more than $300. When they were released, they ended up selling for $270.

James will take the court in Miami against the Thunder at 5:30 p.m. ET.

According to Nike the influence for Bryant’s kick comes from his signature animal, the snake, with the scale-like design meant to mimic Christmas tree garland.

Bryant and the Lakers will host the Knicks at the Staples Center at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Nike explains that the unusual wavy lines on the side of the shoe designed for Durant, are meant to recall video game graphics from the early 1990s.

Durant will take the court against Miami at 5:30 p.m. ET.

The NBA will play a total of five games on Christmas day as follows:

Celtics at Nets at 12:00 p.m. ET

On December 13, Spike Lee was spotted in New York City at Madison Square Garden for a Nicks vs. Lakers game wearing the Air Jordan XX8 “Knicks” sneakers, that have yet to be released.

As reported earlier, Lil Wayne is in an exclusive partnership with Supra and will be overseeing a new line of sneakers with designs that are inspired by him.

December 6^th, presented us with the first of the shoes when SUPRA presented a new Stevie Williams S1W with a colorway by Lil Wayne. The collaboration represents a synthesis of skateboarding, hip hop and the friendship between Lil Wayne and Stevie.

“I asked Wayne if he wanted to do a colorway with my shoe,” Stevie said, “and he said he was up for it. Just supporting Wayne skateboarding, and having his name on my shoe, it just shows how big this skateboarding thing is. I’m excited about it.”

The high-performance S1W mid top is constructed with red pig suede and red full-grain leather and has custom sock liners with the words “PRESIDENT” on the left and “CARTER” on the right. White accents are thrown in, in all the right places and padded red mesh lining and tongue complete the look.  The shoe is built atop a white, lightweight, cored-out sole that features a new SUPRAFOAM footbed with impact technology.

“It’s dope,” Lil Waynestated about the collaboration. “It’s super dope. Stevie’s a legend, so to even be involved in anything Stevie’s doing is crazy, man—and then to be part of his shoe? Come on, man.”

The Supra team is appreciative of Lil Wayne’s work and stated that they find his music “as a source of inspiration.” Lil Wayne apparently has the same admiration of Supra and has been a strong supporter of the Supra Skytop since it was first introduced in 2007, so it comes as no surprise that the two would join forces to create a line.

I know the holidays are nearing, but I just wanted to skip ahead a few months to a possible Valentine’s Day release. Jordan brand is planning a release in the first quarter of 2013, for the Air Jordan V GS aka “Strawberry.” A fresh strawberry color covers the sneaker, along with accents of white, gray, and pink.  Placed along the side of the shoe is the famous “for the love of the game” logo and the “jumpman” is placed on the heel and tongue.  Check back for updates on an official release date!

“I don’t want to look like everybody else,” Prodigy said. “I want people to look at me and wonder what I got on, follow my trend. I like to bring something new to the table and SUPRA goes right along with my whole style.”

The “Infamous” Backwood is a work boot/athletic-shoe hybrid constructed atop a unique sole that has a lightweight and comfortable SUPRAFOAM midsole with a rugged, rubber lug outsole.  Prodigy designed the upper with grey suede camouflage and black ballistic nylon.

Dirk Nowitzki from the Dallas Mavericks was recently spotted in the Nike Hyperdunk, at Nike’s global “Game on, World” campaign last week when making a special appearance at the Nike+ Basketball Berlin 5-on-5 tournament that drew in 16 teams from the German capital to partake in various basketball activities.

This was a perfect way to introduce the new Nike+ Basketball shoes and technology, as teams gave it their all and were able to track their performance via the technology embedded into their shoes.

A highlight for the teams was when Dirk showed his sportsmanship and participated in the ‘Bump Out’ game towards the end of the tournament.

New Balance is set to bring back their “Rainbow Pack,”  in 2013. The most recent rainbow running shoe, the 890 was released last year, and now the fashionable 574 will be the next model to step up and rise to the occasion.

Set for release in the fall, the LeBron X base model is going to run you approximately $180; but if you are looking for the added bells and whistles to track your moves, it has been speculated that one would have to pay around $315 for the enhanced version!

Brian Strong, a spokesman for Nike, has stated that the sneakers suggested retail price of $180 is correct, but the price of the enhanced model was “still being set,” and stated that the $315 is inaccurate.

Superstar rapper Drake was spotted in the streets of his hometown of Toronto rocking Lebron James’ South Beach 9s by Nike. The sleek kicks were released in June and are one of the hottest sneaker releases of the year next to Kanye West’s Air Yeezy 2s. If you’re looking to buy a pair, they will cost you around $250-300. The South Beach colorway is definitely not for everybody but Drake pulls it off in a toned down outfit to make the 9s really pop out.

If you’re curious about athletic shoes and some of the ways they have changed our lives, a free documentary entitled Sneaker Confidential is worth a peek!  The film has been around for a while now, but it provides us with a knowledgeable, yet amusing outlook on some of the events throughout the years since the sneaker first came about, including the story of the feuding brothers of two world-renowned shoe companies, Adidas and Puma.

Who would think that out of the 700 million shoes sold per year that only 20% would be used for sports?  A good answer to that would be a self-proclaimed sneaker head or fashionista. Sneakers are a great form of self expression and almost everyone has owned some, starting at an early age.

Some of the highlights from the film include feedback from athletes, celebrities, designers, artists, collectors, and scientists.  We also hear from marathoners who put sneakers (or lack thereof) to the ultimate test: 26.2 miles.

An interesting but not impressive point in the documentary is the fact that the two brothers were actually Nazis. The long running feud between them caused the small German village of Herzogenaurach to inherit the nickname “the town of bent necks,” all because of their choice of shoes.

I was looking at the August Jordan releases and I have to say, they have quite a few hits in my opinion. My overall pick in this trio of colors is the Air Jordan 1 Retro Hi in black and varsity red with a white sole that pops.  It is set for release on August 4, 2012, at an exceptional price of $135.

I enjoy this particular design, because of the unique stitching all over the sneaker and the different layering of the leather. The cherry on top (or the side in this case) is the iconic Jordan logo.
