October 28, 1948 – February 10, 2012

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Linda Marie Lounsbury (nee Boerchers) on Friday, February 10th, 2012 at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, at the age of 63, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Linda will be lovingly remembered by her husband Bruce of 43 years, her daughters Shelley and Shawna (John) and grandchildren Taylor, Madison, Joshua, Kaiden and Sage; her sisters Violet (Gordon) Hess of Ochre River, MB and their children Barry, Brenda and Darryl and their families and Irene Smith (Romeo Villeneuve) of Sudbury, ON and Irene’s children Bradley and Lorraine and their families. Linda is also survived by her in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Linda was predeceased by her parents Lena and John Boerchers and her special furry friend Fifi.

Linda was born on October 28th, 1948 in Ste Rose du Lac and grew up on the family farm northwest of Ochre River, MB. Linda was the youngest of three daughters. After completing high school in Dauphin, Linda moved to Winnipeg where she resided for 5 years. During this time she worked at Welder’s Supplies as a bookkeeper. In May of 1968 Linda married her highschool sweetheart and best friend, Bruce and in November of 1968 welcomed their first daughter, Shelley and then in November of 1969 their second daughter Shawna was born. From Winnipeg they moved to Fort Frances, ON where they lived for a couple of years and then moved to Dauphin where they have since lived. Linda worked at Johnston and Johnston Law Office (which later became Johnston and Co.) as a bookkeeper for 34 years retiring from her long career in 2008. Linda took pride in her work and was both a loyal and hard working employee. Linda was not only an employee but a friend to all she worked with. Those friendships were very special to her and many continued on into her retirement. While Linda worked at Johnston’s, she raised her family as a loving and supportive mother that instilled a good work ethic and a sense of independence and responsibility in her children. Linda was a quiet person that enjoyed her time at home but also cherished the time that she spent with her close friends and family. Linda loved to travel and her favorite time was spent on family vacations (Las Vegas, Mexico and Florida) and camping with Bruce at Bakers Narrows in Flin Flon, MB and at Sportsman’s Park in Clear Lake, MB. She will certainly be missed this summer during “happy hour” at Sportsman’s Park. Linda also enjoyed the quality time she spent spoiling, playing and visiting with her grandchildren and they will remember her smile and playful spirit forever.

Linda was a very caring, loving person and will be greatly missed. The family will cherish her spirit and hold on tightly to the many wonderful memories they have of her and her life. The family would like to thank Dr. Mathison and Dr. Bretecher and the staff in the Chemo Unit and in the Palliative Care Unit at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre for their wonderful care over the past several months.

Memorial service was held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from the Grace Baptist Church in Ochre River with Pastor Allen Unger officiating. Sharon Brink served as organist and Diane Marshall performed a special musical selection. The eulogy was delivered by Linda’s daughters, Shelley Hopkins and Shawna Lounsbury. Interment will follow at a later date in the Turtle River Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one’s choice.

It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Helen Soloway on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at her home in Pulp River.

Left to cherish many fond memories of Helen are her son Leslie, daughter-in-law Eileen, son Orville, daughter-in-law Debbie, son Harvey and special friend Kathy; daughter Angeline, son-in-law Kevin, grandchildren, CiJae Filipchuk and special friend Scott, Brandi and Evan Soloway, Steven Soloway and Kristen and Courtney Soloway; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Steve, parents Fred and Catherine (Zawersowany) Pelypiw; brother John, wife Mary; brother Michael, wife Irene; sister Anne, husband John; sister Mary, husband Tony; brother William, wife Celia; brother Anton, wife Shirley; sister Nellie; brother Peter, wife Adeline; and sister Jean.

In November 1944, Helen married Steve Soloway in the Pulp River Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church. After their wedding, Steve and Helen lived on the Soloway family farm with his mother Daisy Soloway. In 1946, Steve and Helen moved to the homestead of Steve’s sister Annie (Soloway) Andreychuk one mile south of the Pulp River corner, near the Pulp River cemetery. Leslie was born in 1951. Here they operated a mixed farm and sold turkeys and chickens for additional money.

Steve and Helen purchased a quarter section of land and in 1955, Steve, Helen and Leslie moved three quarters of a mile south to their new farm. Orville was born four days later. Since the only buildings on the property were a large barn near the river and a grain bin, Steve and Helen moved a granary onto the property and made this their home for the summer months, while they hurried to build their one-room home before the winter came. In 1958 and 1960, Harvey and Angeline were born.

After Steve’s sudden passing in 1966, Helen continued to farm with her sons, and with the help of family and neighbours. In the later years when her sons took over the farming responsibilities, Helen continued to keep active by raising chickens, geese and ducks. Helen took great pleasure in her cooking, gardening and canning. Helen also loved to collect recipes; she always said she could write her own cookbook. Helen was always ready to feed whoever came into the yard, no one left hungry.

Helen will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

Prayers were offered on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., from the Sts. Vladimir & Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church in Pine River, with the Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak celebrating. Holly Hryhoruk served as Cantor. Serving as Crossbearers were CiJae Filipchuk, Brandi Soloway, Evan Soloway, Kristen Soloway, and Courtney Soloway. Kristen Soloway delivered the eulogy. Interment followed in the Pulp River & District Cemetery in Pulp River. Laying Helen to rest were Pallbearers James Komarniski, Duane Komarniski, Ernie Serwa, Arnold Pelly, Myron Komarniski, and Manuel Pelly.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Helen may be made to the Pulp River & District Cemetery.

We celebrate a life inspired by love and music, of a talented, intelligent, remarkable woman. Hilda Gushulak (Zimmer) passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 31st, 2012 at the age of 80.

Hilda was born on August 22nd, 1931 in Grenfell, SK and grew up in rural MB. She attended Angusville High School and was the recipient of the MB Scholarship, awarded to the student who had the highest overall grade average in the province. She graduated from St. Boniface Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1954 and was the Matron of Erickson Hospital for several years. She married Lawrence Gushulak on May 21st, 1960. They moved to Ste. Rose in 1966 where Hilda continued her nursing career. After several years of nursing she “retired” to raise her 4 children and work tirelessly for the community as a choir director for the school and countless hours devoted to directing the church choir and teaching Marriage Preparation.

Hilda’s joy in life came from her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her husband Lawrence and her children Katherine, Laura, Barb (John) and Ken (Lisa). Her friendship, love and support will also be missed by her grandchildren Cale, Rieanne and Sidnie. Grandma was, and always will be, their biggest fan.

She is survived by her sister Isabel and her brother Will (Gail), her sister-in-law Shirley and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service for Hilda was held on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Ste. Rose de Lima Roman Catholic Church in Ste. Rose du Lac, MB. Fr. Armand Le Gal, OMI officiated, with the service concluding at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made be to the Salvation Army, one of Hilda’s favorite organizations as she believed in feeding those who were hungry and helping anyone who was in need, or to the Dr. Gendreau Memorial Personal Care Home in Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba.

We would also like to thank the staff of the Dr.Gendreau Personal Care Home for the patient and kind care they deliver with humor and compassion everyday and the hospital staff for their kindness and support in Mom’s last days.

Dad lived and worked in Winnipeg as a CN Fireman in 1955. Then in 1959 he returned to his current home to farm in the Fork River area. Dad had a passion for the land. He was his own educator in many aspects. He loved to read and learn, and was determined to do the best at whatever it was, and was never afraid to take a chance or risk something new with his farming career. We consider this part of his life to be very proud and successful.

Dad was not just all work and no play. Some of the most important pleasures for him were big game hunting and fishing. His first Alaskan trip was especially exciting for him when he reeled in a 76 lb. King Salmon!

Dad had many hobbies, which included nature, local history and archaeology, wine making, making his own homemade sausage, pepperoni and smokies, smoking fish, and last but certainly not least, auction sales! He always said, “there was always something for someone,” at an auction.

Dad and Mom enjoyed their retirement and were able to enjoy travelling to Detroit, California, San Francisco, Florida, Alabama, Mexico, Las Vegas and Alaska. They took their 5th wheel camping to Manipogo, Blue Lake, Waterhen, and many weekends at Austin Thresherman’s Reunion with friends.

Our family would like to thank the family, friends and dearest neighbours for all of their support, care, and comfort to Dad and us from the bottom of our hearts. Grateful thanks to everyone for the food prepared and delivered to us. Each and every one of us will remember what you did and how you made us feel. To Dr. Trina Mathison and Palliative Care: thank you for caring for Dad.

Prayers were offered on Sunday, February 5, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., from the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin. Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, February 6, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., from the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection, with the Rev. Fr. Oleg Bodnarski celebrating. Holly Hryhoruk served as Cantor. The Crossbearer was Allan Sliworsky, and Florence Sliworsky read the Epistle. Jackie Deg delivered the eulogy, and Lauren Deg read a poem. Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. Laying Victor to rest were pallbearers Craig Cochrane, Garfield Rowe, Barry Honish, Brayden Cochrane, David Zurba and Laurence Dudar. Mac Sliworsky and his sister Lillian Romanchuk performed musical selections at the luncheon.

Donations in memory of Victor may be made to The Dauphin Wildlife Association, or to the Palliative Care Unit at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre.

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Gary Charles Patterson at the age of 70 years young on January 27, 2012.

Gary was born in Carman, Manitoba on September 4, 1941 where he lived and received his education. Later on, he moved to Winnipegosis and worked for Esso, and then moved to Dauphin where he made his permanent residence.

Gary pursued his passion of driving truck first with Tym Ltd. then with McMunn and Yates, and retired from McMunn’s in 2006.

Gary was a very active supporter of the Dauphin Kings, and drove bus for them back in the 1980’s. He loved his dogs Del, Peppey, Cocoa and Tippy. Gary was always there when you needed a helping hand. He was a great handyman, excellent listener and a wonderful person to be around.

Gary met his soul mate Joyce in 1987 and they married on June 30, 1988. At that time, they sold the house in town where they lived and moved to the country where they started up their chinchilla farm. Gary always found something to putter away at around the farm, whether it was repairing his truck, cutting grass, blowing snow, cutting wood or just tinkering in the garage.

Gary loved to play with his grandchildren, nieces, nephews or all children around. Gary was a kid at heart and was always up for a game of hide and seek, nails, baseball or horse shoes.

Gary and Joyce held an annual corn roast September long weekend for many years. People loved coming by for great food and corn on the cob. He was always up for company at the farm and a bonfire would certainly be started shortly after your arrival. Sitting around the fire reminiscing was always great fun. Gary liked the great outdoors, fishing, camping or just going to the river for a swim.

Gary is survived by his wife Joyce of 23 years; his children Kelvin, Ron, Darren and Candace; his step-children Theresa, Doug and Harold; his grandchildren; his sister Aileen; his brother Don; numerous nieces, nephews, and many extended family members.

Memorial service was held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel with Fabien Carriere officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

On Monday, January 23, 2012, Alexander Holowachuk passed away in Prince Rupert, BC, at the age of 78 years.

Alex was born on February 8, 1933, in Pine River, MB, where he grew up and was educated. On October 20, 1962, he married Frances Nykyha. A few years after their marriage they moved to Dauphin, where Alex was employed with the Canadian National Railway. After retiring from the CNR, he often travelled back to the old family farm in Pine River, where he would pick berries, mushrooms, and just walk around and enjoy the area. He would always be looking for Lady Slippers, and when he found them he would dig them up and bring them home.

Alex’s father taught him how to make straw hats, and as we would sit and visit, he would often say, “one of these days I will teach you how to make a straw hat”. Unfortunately, we never did make one of those folk art hats.

Alex loved to go for coffee. Both morning and afternoon (and also sometimes in the evening) you would see him at the local coffee shops, “having a cup of coffee and a visit”.

Alex is survived by his brother Peter and wife Celia; his sisters Anne Boyachuk, Mary Gogal, Jean Poitras, Ann Watson, and Tillie Lewycky; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Alex was predeceased by his parents Anton and Pauline (nee Dowbush) Holowachuk; his brothers Dmetro, Steve, and John; his brother-in-law Michael Lewycky; and his sisters Stella Chornoby, Zonia Harapiak, and Eunice Hrynkiw.

Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin, with the Reverend Karen Kuzek officiating. Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Peter Harapiak, Adam Boyachuk, Bob Boyachuk, Garry Dixon, Bill Dudar, and Mitch Chornoby.
