This podcast marks our one year anniversary of recording! And further shows that not only we can’t count our episodes, we can’t even be bothered to release them in the right order. Of course that one year anniversary came and went three months ago, and we’re just now getting this recording up. Still something is better then nothing, right? Of course it took a guest appearance on The Game’s The Thing, an RPG Podcast I recorded for that other site I do, to kick Brian into editing. It didn’t help that Jules “Liger” Ius was pestering us to get it up as well. Apparently since her husband showed up in Episode 7: Fosters, It’s Not Australian For Beer there has been a bit of one-upsmanship to show him she could drink beer better then he could. On a side note everyone should check out KnittedSteel.net which is Jule’s chain mail craft site. She actually sells this stuff, and itsawesome. Tell her the Snooty Drunks sent you, and its our understanding that she will at least nod approvingly.

Beers Tasted:

Deschutes – Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale

Highly regarded as one of the best primers we’ve had on the show. This stuff was pretty fantastic. We had nothing left to taste on the show. So we couldn’t taste anything on air, which is pretty high praise coming from us. GET SOME.

Red Hook – Eisenbach 28

When we browned bag this our first instincts is that we’d had this before. When it was revealed that it was a Red Hook beer we finally understand why, most Red Hooks taste similar. In a way its a step away from the northwest taste and actually reminds us of Schamltz’s an east coast beer. Its malty flavor was quite interesting and we thought it was a great experimental brew for them. We ended up being glad this was brown bagged as we probably would have said, “this is really good, for a Red Hook.” Instead we found a beer we rather enjoyed and definitely found clink worthy.

Hopworks – Secession

Its dark as night, and smells like weed and hops. A smokey taste, which reminded us of burnt marshmallows, with almost no hop flavor. We also can’t agree what temperature this needs to be served at, but agree before we saw the bottle that we generally liked it. As soon as it was undressed though, Brian started changing his tune. He then started blasting them for not having enough hops. Tyson would be willing to try it again if he could sip it over a long period of time and let it get warm to try to find the right temperature for it. Also, who cares if its organic? We certainly don’t.

However, because its from Portland we did manage to spend much of our review laughing at it. Noting we could probably e-mail them and get this history of the hops in the beer, as well as a bottle with a bird on it. So even if our review is a bit whishey washy, we get some firm jokes at the expense of organic hipsters. In the end, no clink.

Deschutes – Abyss 2009

Pours like motor oil, and the head is the color of espresso with a strong alcoholic smell. The taste is coffee, bitter dark bakers chocolate, and was so thick. Tyson dubbed it “Joy in a bottle.” This beer got aged for one year before making it to our mouths, it was well worth the wait. This beer was mind blowing good. I think Jules wins on selection and patience for waiting to present us that beer. It was clinked so hard that we broke glasses.

Mississippi Mud

Smells a dark pilsner, and not in a good way. This black and tan in a bottle is a total waste of shelf space, and we honestly wonder why in God’s name does anyone actually drink it. Taste like a pislner, smells like a pislner and isn’t even remotely interesting.

Iron Horse Brewery – DOUBLE RAINBOW

This beer is unfiltered joy in a bottle, or at least that is what the label implies. A lighter color beer that is actually an explosion of light tasty ale. This would be a heavy summer ale, but would be great BBQ beer, especially around the spring. Tyson is willing to go travel to Ellensburg to get more, but Brian pans it because he thinks its all hype from the label.

Show Notes:

Outro Song: RJD2 – All For You

If you can get a brewer from Portland to draw a bird on their beer and send it to us (e-mail show@snootydrunks.com for a mailing address) we will feature it on our next podcast.

Brian mentioned that “we don’t do Vodka” on this show. He’s a liar.

Again Jules Ius does KnitedSteel.net which features Chain Mail.

For reference the Four Loko Bonus Episode was an unmitigated drunken disaster. Experience the lols.

We’ve Been Drinking:

Brian went to Beverage Place Pub which hosts the Barley Wine Bachanal where he had a ton of Barley Wine. He then proceeded to bore the shit out of us by listing off every beer he had while there. While I typically try to link to the beers they are to much of a one off to find most of them.

Port Townsend Barley Wine 2010

Stone Brewery – Old Guardian 2010

Hopworks Urban – Noggin Flogging Barley Wine

Victory – Old Horizontal 2010

Boundary Bale Bounder

Left Hand – Oak Widershin

Fish Brewery – 10 Squared 2010

Naked City – Cluster Cuss 2010

Lost Abby – Angel Share 2010

Stone – Belgo Old Guardian

Anacordes Brewery – Old Bastes 2008

Full Sail – Old Borehead 2008

Speak Easy Old Godfather 2009

Alaskan Brewery – Barley Wine 08

What happens when you get a bunch of beer, some mics and a guy whose name means chicken fucker? Why an episode of the Snooty Drunks with Stephan Hanefeld of course! As usual we’ll be reviewing beer, making fun of our guest, and watch our guest pet our pussy. We also mis-label last episode as episode 20, which I think goes to show you how often we drink, and how Brian can’t count anything past his hands. Which on a side note is exactly how much I’ve had to drink before writing this post.

The Snooty Drunk Episode 20 [35:08]

Beers Tasted

Iron Horse Brewery – 509

If this is the “taste of the east side” then we have to wonder how boring it is out there, cause this beer is just as uninteresting as the place it comes from. Honestly I kind of wish it tasted worse if only so I could make some horse fucking jokes to liven up this otherwise boring review.

Rogue Brewery – John John Hazelnut Ale

When you put your picture on the front of a beer your saying to the person looking at it, “This is a beer crafted to my tastes and you are now going to have to look me down while your drinking it. ENJOY!” With this in mind Rogue’s brewmasters must have the same taste of as the brewer for 509 as they are both so boring and uninteresting that the review has to make fun of the look of the bottle telling you anything useful about the taste. Basically there is no current Rogue brew out there that we would recommend, and this one fits that category.

Dogfish Head – Miles Davis Bitches Brew

It’s important to note that this comes in a 750mL bottle, which is about the size of your typical wine bottle; so it’s pretty big. Has the nose of dry tall grass, earthy, and a light coffee flavor. The flavor has an interesting floral note that your left with, the brew is dark but doesn’t taste dark. We were confused by the taste only because it held flavors we weren’t familiar with. As Brian points out this is likely the Gesha root that we’re tasting, something that none of us had actually tasted before.

Brew Dog – Storm

While they stole some hops from New Zealand this was brewed in aged whiskey barrels in Scotland. This beer is light in color and looks like a carbonated scotch. It smells like scotch, and even taste likes peat and smoke. So basically it’s a scotch as a beer, is what we’re trying to tell you. However, Brian pointed out that it reminded him of RIPA on Rye which means it’s basically tastes so much like what it was aged in and not enough like a beer. Another mark against is the fact that it costs about a $1 an ounce. We offer some suggestions on how Brew Dog could make some improvements, such as using Northwest Hops… But we’re a bit biased.

Show Notes:

Outro: Hudson Mohawke – Ice Viper

For those of you keeping track of what our guests are drinking Stephan’s first beer was Deschutes Brewery‘s Deschutes Dissident 2008, and this desert island beer was Rock Bottom‘s Humpback Pale Ale (HUMPBACK WHAAAAALE)

As we were speaking about the Dogfish Head Brewmasters episode apparently they’ve written a little wrap to go with it.

In the end we all reached back for the Dogfish Head, and really as the only one we clinked, who is really surprised by that?

We’ve Been Drinking

This episode has been in the making since about May 2010, more specifically a couple of days before Episode 11: A Quick Stop on the Short Bus. Why did it take so long to make it out? Well, we don’t really have a reason, but personally I’m just blaming Brian.

Have you ever written a letter that you later unearthed many years later? Did look back on it and think, “Thank God I don’t sound like that any more?” To us that’s a lot like listening to this episode. It was recorded so long ago we remember wondering if we’d ever make it to episode 10 let alone 20. Hell we recorded it so long ago we still were doing 20 min episodes.

Episode 20: At Least It’s Not A Clip Episode [20:42]

Beers Tasted

Dogfish Head – Squall IPA

Major citrus notes with a back of pine in the nose, specifically orange citrus. However it’s way to balanced to be considered in the style of the northwest IPA. That being said, it’s a fantastic IPA that brought forward some interesting malts with a light coffee after taste. Pick it up if you can find.

Shmaltz Brewing - Lenny’s R.I.P.A. on Rye

This beer was a disappointment, it doesn’t taste like an IPA. For loyal listeners of the show we’ve mentioned this beer a couple of times. The whiskey/rye flavors over power any traces of beer, and while we want to like it, it was ultimately a disappointment. That being said we want to try it again after it’s been through the barrels a couple of times. Shmatlz’s website indicates they are now on their second batch, we’re interested but might wait until the third.

Firestone Walker – Porabala

A smooth complex beer that was super limited release. The one time we had this beer we wanted so more, and have never seen it again. Darker then you’d expect, we’re still trying to get the stains out, and has a hint of ristretto espresso in the taste. A fantastic beer, now if we could only find some more.

Show Notes

Outro: Jeff Beck – Come Dancing

The promo video we mention in the show from Dogfish Head:

That’s it for us this episode, make sure to check back soon as episode 21 is in the can and we have another At Least It’s Not a Clip Episode that I’m hoping won’t take us 7 months to get out. Until then keep on drinking, good night folks!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, if you weren’t drunk and full for the holiday your either Canadian or doing it wrong. Personally I got drunk and played Rock Band and then we came up with the idea of Thanksgiving bingo. This week we get all poop joke meta and have Joe Harrison on for his real episode, instead of that bonus episode we did last week. Let me tell you, after recording what became three episodes in a week we were a bit loopy by the bonus episode. I think Brian was still a bit drunk while editing it, which is why the Four Loko episode was a bit choppy. Don’t worry he was fired for it, then rehired once I realized I don’t know how to edit audio together. Jerk.

The Snooty Drunks Ep 19 [34:01]

The Primer

Fremont Brewing – Universale Pale Ale

Fremont describes itself as the “Center of the Universe” so Fremont Brewing decided to name it’s flagship product the Universale after this narcissism. While it has the pale aspects it’s interestingly hoppy. It’s bigger body, compared to most pale ales doesn’t overwhelm you but still gives it enough flavor to make it interesting. We described it as the great pizza beer. A beer you’d want to get a pitcher of along with your food. Unfortunately you can only get it in Fremont, it’s pretty hard to find. One of the few times we clinked the primer.

Beer’s Tasted

Nectar Brewing – Humble Brown Ale

This beer attempts to showcase the hemp flavor in beer, while it does a good job showcasing the floral taste it ultimately fails in being interesting. In a way this is trying to be a stunt beer without being a stunt beer. The biggest selling point, the hemp, ultimately gets in the way of making anything interesting out of this beer. Start with a better brown and it may end up coming out a much better beer. The hemp is interesting but otherwise meh.

Paulaner Salvator – Doppelbock

A strong German nose, with a malty carbonated hop taste. Joe thought this was a good representation of a 16th century session beer (lunch beer), mind you at 7.9 its not really our idea of a session beer. Really though it does taste like a Turkey sandwich, with a good mustard, on rye. Which is exactly what you’d want with this beer, but it feels like it’s half the equation. If paired with some food we’d probably be more excited about it.

Ommegang - Three Philosophers

The black cherry liquor nose intrigued us and carries through in the taste. The big body is approachable but interesting enough to intrigue even the more snootiest of drinkers. We spent most of our review on the various flavors to this complex beer. In the end we’d clink this American influenced European style beer.

Show Notes:

Outro : Gemini – We On

Joe’s first beer was Stone Brewery – Stone Imperial Russian Stout, which we first reviewed on Episode 11 – Quick Stop on the Short Bus.

His desert island beer was Oskar Blues -Ten FIDY which we had all the way back on Episode 2 - And Our Valiant Heroes Try Again and revisited it in Episode 11 – Quick Stop on the Short Bus. Also the Laughing Budha’s Dragon King Lager we talk about was tried back then also.

Out of fear of being sued if we didn’t have on the next show we welcome (without having any legal motion filed against us) to the show David Greenspan. While he did not show up in his hibiscus tie he did bring some rather choice beer that we definitely didn’t object to. So join us while we subject David to our mine numbing antics, make some lawyer/fashion police jokes, and forever torment Brian’s mom.

The Snooty Drunks Ep 18

The Primer

Shiner - Shiner Bock

So boring that we really didn’t even want to talk about it.

Beers Tasted

Samuel Smith – Oatmeal Stout

Sits lazily on the tongue, feels heavy without having a lot of depth of flavor. It sits on your tongue like a fat man on a couch. Overall the beer is rather uninteresting and fits in the general English beer genre. And contradictorily to what David suggests at drinking at room temperature, Samuel Smith doesn’t recommend it. The Drunks pan it, hard.

Mac & Jacks – Black IPA

This Black IPA is good, we were actually quite excited and surprised by this beer. It’s got a good dark flavor with the IPA hops, but we do wish it had a bit more smoke up front. The beer getting close to that magic fusion of stout and IPA that we know is out there, while this isn’t there yet we quite liked it. So this one is firmly going on the clink list. David was just confused by it, we’re still trying to get him out of the fetal position. We chose it as our beer to go back for when the show was done.

Black Toad Brewing - Black Toad

It looks the color of coke that has been left out over night, it’s huge nose will defiantly knock you around a bit. However the flavor is lighter then you’d expect. We’d expect it would work out really well for a barbecue. While we want to be snooty about it because if it’s price point and it’s simplicity, we clinked it for being a fairly good beer.

Show Notes

Really? This Douchebag?

As we noted David, in the above picture is modeling the pirate band, from our friend Jule’s maile website, Knited Steel.

Who we noted is actually married to our previous guest Arno, who was in Episode 7: Fosters, it’s not Australian for beer

And remember if you want this jackass to officiate your wedding, he’s an ordained minster through the Universal Life Church.

As for the difference between wet and dry hops? Your guess is as good as ours, we did find a wikipedia article and it took the firm stance of “sometimes wet hops are used.” Thanks internet.

And we once again, reference the Bud and Clamato episode.

Outro: Gorillaz – Superfast Jellyfish

This Week Tyson Had:

Alaskan Brewery – Double Black IPA

Deschute’s is doing it better, not impressed.

This Week Brian Had:

Silver City Brewery – Fat Scotch Ale

It had a small note of a pete flavor that was interesting.

So what happens when you move, have a huge convention and your co-host just never gets around to cutting the episode? Or how about that unreleased episode you guys recorded for such an occasion as you we’re going to miss a week or two? Yeah… About that…

This episode has been two months in the making, and quite frankly I don’t remember a bit of it. Unfortunately it wasn’t from the drunken haze. So now that we’re done with our mid-season break *coughBSGcough*, we welcome you to the Inevitable Return of the Great White Podcast.

Special thanks to Ryan “Accalon” Zack for having a face for radio, being a Bender (Bendite?), and popping his collar on the radio. Also, for all the ladies interested in this single man you can see his photos on his facebook page.

The Snooty Drunks Ep 17 [48:50]

The Primer

Caldera Brewery - Ashland Amber

A solid amber that is best enjoyed during the blistering hot days of summer. Would drink again.

Beers Tasted

Elysian Brewery – Men’s Room Seattle Red

A lightly filtered, malty red ale. Brewed to appeal to the masses, which makes it ultimately forgettable. Though would go great with some BBQ.

Laurelwood Brew Pub – Workhorse IPA

This beer has some strong floral notes, but still showcases the hops in a rather nice way. However, it does feel like an old recipe in the sense that it’s not bringing anything new to the IPA table. As Brian notes, “This feels like a great IPA. Four years ago.” Ryan though really liked the simple flavors of the beer, but admits he’s not much of an IPA fan. Tyson is interested in checking out a seasonal but isn’t that excited by this beer.

Deschutes Brewery – Hop in the Dark

A combination of a dark stout and an IPA. We’ve seen this happening with some other breweries. Basically they are experimenting with what would happen if we let a stout and an IPA go fuck themselves. Unfortunately the batch we had brought all of the stout and not enough of the hops. While we had to pass on this specific batch we did future clink the brew when they are done tweaking with it, in about two years.

Show Notes:

Is there any good beers that come in a twist top?

Remember, Accalon says, “Stay away from grape, and banana condoms as it’ll ruin your pallet.”

The Simpler Times Lager by Minhas Craft Brewery in Brian’s words, “It’s a great beer for 50 cents a can.” Tyson disagrees, vehemently.

Ryan’s first beer was Deschutes Black Butte Porter which we couldn’t argue with that good of a start. To bad his pallet fell off after that, as his desert island was a Sam Adams. Psh.

Outro: The Pharcyde - Runnin’ (Philippians Remix)

Previous to this episode we had

Ninkasi - Total Domination IPA

This week we get arm twisted into trying something way outside our norm. They say that it has alcohol in it but we’re still investigating that point. While we still trying to figure out if we should lynch our guest, Jay Becker, we can say that cider at least does go well with brats.

The Primer

Crispin

The bitter notes were crisp and generally taste like Martinell’s but alcoholic.

Beers Ciders Tasted

Strongbow

Has a good apple flavor, rather dry but really un-noteworthy.

Fish Brewing – Cider Mountain Pear Cider

Semi-dry with a great Pear flavor but it doesn’t really tickle anything special in us.

Hornsby’s Crisp Apple Cider

Smells and tastes exactly like an apple jolly rancher. Huge pass.

Show Notes

Outro: Camp Lo – Luchini

Priest Collar: A priest collar is made in the same way as a black and tan except using a cider instead of a pale ale or pale lager.

Gerber Beer: Taste like real baby!

The End of the World is Brew Dog’s latest baby.

This Week We Had:

Baron Brewing – Rauchbier which we can say the week in Tyson’s fridge didn’t help much. Unfortunately we’re still not fans.

Thankfully we don’t drink punch! Listen while we get tingly in our happy places and drink some really low abv beer.

The Snooty Drunks Ep15 [54:36]

The Primer

Pilsner Urquell

While there is a nutty finish, that Brian can’t get behind but Tyson thinks it’s solidly drinkable. It’s the most mainstream Pilsner which means that we’re generally panning it.

Beers Tasted

Baron Brewing – Rauchbier

A fairly tame lager that has been beat over it’s head with smoke. While the style definitely intrigues the both of us and we really want more of this style in the end we aren’t able to clink this interesting style.

Allagash Brewing Company – Curieux

Aged with a Jim Bean whiskey barrels this beer is fantastic. With light oak flavor, really strong vanilla, and in Maradine’s words “a magic potion quality in the sense that the flavor profile changes depending on the temperature.” While the Snooty’s clink, it’ll run you $20 a bottle buyer beware.

Brouwerij Rodenbach N.V. – Rodenbach Grand Cru

This beer quite interesting to the palete, as it’s a blend of almost everything Brouwerij makes, then aged. It’s an acidic, sour beer that is extremely mature and complex. Definitely worthy of the clink.

Bonus Beer

Victory Brewing – Old Horizontal

This beer is drinkable at 6 months, two years is middle age, and three years is legendary. This beer should probably be rolled before drinking. I mean sediment holy crap. Smells like molasses and we don’t have enough of a palette to drink it. We were sad, but after much debate it’s clink able.

Show Notes:

Outro: Official FIFA Anthem

For those who immediately want to jump to wikipedia when we ask what the ABV for Budweiser is our web monkeys tell us it clocks in at a 5.0%.

The Seattle bar that Maradine mentioned “Pillager’s Pub.”

Prunes come from plums… Just fyi…

Desert Island Beer:

Mongozo the the vuzuela of beer, which surprisingly has a vuvuzela on the label.

Not Michael Schumacher and Urquell, Spatan, or Chilada

Mardine’s First Beer

Yuengling

Brian says, at least it’s better then Bud.

This Week Tyson Had:

Stone 14 Anniversary: Emperial IPA

If your a fan of Stone Brewery, don’t bother. The bitter notes aren’t great, and the beer is just not great. Besides, Northwest IPAs are just better.

Note Tyson misspoke calling it the 15.

This Week Brian Had:

New Belgium: Sampler Pack

All in all, not bad drinkablity. Surprising the Skinny Dip impressed me, though I think they re-jiggered the hops.
