Ashley and James’s Everest Base Camp Wedding: The Journey in Photographs

A wedding dress, hiking boots and a glacier stretching into the distance: Ashley and James brought a very different kind of wedding album home from Nepal. On March 16, 2017, the couple exchanged vows at Everest Base Camp, with photographer Charleton Churchill documenting the journey.

The location matters. This was a wedding at the foot of Everest, not a ceremony on its summit. The photographs need no extra altitude added to their story.

The journey behind the wedding photographs

In Churchill’s account of the expedition, he explains that the team spent a year preparing. Reaching base camp involved nine hiking days; the roughly three-week window included the wider trip, rather than three uninterrupted weeks of walking.

Heavy snow, bitter cold and altitude-related difficulties made the plans change. The ceremony was brief, and bad weather delayed the helicopter departure until the following morning. Local guides and the support team were essential to making the journey possible.

Knowing that background changes the way you look at the pictures. The backpacks, boots and tent are part of the wedding story, every bit as much as the rings.

Look beyond the mountain backdrop

Start with the photograph of the couple walking hand in hand over uneven ground. The wedding clothes are there, but so are the backpacks. It is a lovely little collision of two worlds: an occasion people usually dress up for, and a landscape that calls for practical gear.

The close-up of their footwear tells the same story with almost no scenery at all. A white hem falls beside sturdy boots planted on the ice. In another frame, a bright yellow tent becomes the doorway for a wedding portrait.

Then there are the wide views. The people occupy only a small part of the frame, leaving space for ridgelines, rock and snow. That difference in scale gives the gallery much of its character. The quieter photographs bring it back to something familiar: exchanging a ring, sharing a kiss and putting an arm around the person beside you.

A wedding within a much bigger landscape

Everest’s Nepalese surroundings form part of Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its significance reaches beyond the famous peak: glaciers, deep valleys, wildlife and Sherpa communities are all part of the place.

That is a useful way to read these images, too. Nepal is more than a dramatic background for a wedding. The journey passes through a lived-in mountain region with its own culture and daily life. A photograph of a suspension bridge or a trail can be just as revealing as the final portrait.

An idea worth borrowing

You do not need an expedition to make a celebration feel personal. What works here is the connection between the couple, the place and the photographs. A familiar trail, a shoreline or a view you have shared can give a much simpler occasion that same sense of belonging.

If the journey is part of the celebration, make room in the album for it: the walk, the preparations and the small moments between the portraits. Those details help the photographs tell a story of their own.

The ceremony was only one part of the expedition

Churchill’s account describes a very short window at base camp for food, the vows, photographs and packing. The planned helicopter departure then became an overnight wait when the weather prevented collection. That sequence matters to the album: a finished portrait conceals the waiting, changing arrangements and support behind it.

The photographer also identifies the Khumbu Icefall and the face of Nuptse as features around the ceremony. Recognizing those names gives the backdrop a geographical identity. It is a particular camp in a mountain landscape, not an interchangeable summit scene. The account of the wedding is useful for understanding the photographs, but it should not be treated as a template for managing another high-altitude trip.

Three scales in one wedding album

The wide views place the couple inside the landscape. Medium views show how they move through it, with packs and practical clothing entering the frame. Close details, such as boots beneath a dress or hands during the ceremony, bring the story back to the people. An album with all three scales can explain an experience that a single dramatic portrait only hints at.

Notice how the yellow tent works as both a practical object and a strong colour accent. It locates a portrait within the camp while giving the eye somewhere to settle among pale snow and dark rock. The contrast is especially effective because the object belongs to the journey; it does not need an invented symbolic meaning.

The wedding journey beyond the portraits

Across seventeen photographs, the wedding unfolds through preparations, walking, bridges and equipment as well as formal portraits. That sequence lets the viewer follow an experience instead of meeting the couple only at its most dramatic moment. Notice how a practical detail in one frame reappears in another: a pack, a boot or the tent connects the ceremony with the journey that made it possible.

For a personal celebration closer to home, the transferable idea is that sequence: a place approached, an occasion shared and the small details that connect them. Choosing photographs for those different roles can give an album greater depth without requiring a remote destination or a more extreme version of somebody else’s trip.

Grand Canyon Cloud Inversion: Why Fog Can Fill the Canyon

Some mornings, the Grand Canyon seems to trade its rock layers for an ocean. White cloud fills the spaces between the cliffs, leaving the highest formations looking like islands. From a clear viewpoint above it, the familiar depth of the canyon becomes surprisingly hard to judge.

This is the scene people call a Grand Canyon cloud inversion. The cloud is real, and the explanation is a fascinating combination of temperature, moisture and the shape of the land.

What is a full cloud inversion?

A temperature inversion is a layer in which air becomes warmer with height, reversing the more familiar pattern of cooler air above warmer air. In a canyon, colder air can collect below a warmer layer. The atmosphere becomes relatively stable, limiting the vertical mixing that would otherwise help disperse it.

Temperature alone does not make a canyon full of cloud. There must also be enough moisture for the colder air to reach saturation. Water vapour then condenses into tiny suspended droplets. Viewed from within that layer, it is fog; seen from a viewpoint above, it becomes a sea of cloud.

The National Weather Service’s explanation of radiation fog describes how overnight cooling can bring air to saturation, particularly in sheltered valleys with light winds. An inversion can exist without visible fog, so the two terms are related but are not interchangeable.

Why does it look so dramatic here?

The canyon’s terrain gives the cloud somewhere to gather and gives visitors places from which to look down on it. As the fog level changes, different ridges disappear and re-emerge. A scene that usually invites you to look into the distance suddenly asks you to look at the surface of a cloud.

The National Park Service describes strong differences between the canyon’s microclimates. Elevation, nighttime heat loss and local air circulation all influence conditions. During winter, cold air can remain trapped inside the canyon, and fog sometimes develops after cooling over snow-covered ground.

Photographer and filmmaker Harun Mehmedinović captured the phenomenon in Kaibab Elegy, a 2017 film from the SKYGLOW project. Its time-lapse sequences reveal movement that is much harder to appreciate in a single photograph.

Can you plan a visit around one?

Think of a cloud inversion as a possible bonus, rather than an appointment. The right temperature structure, moisture and wind conditions have to come together. A cold morning alone does not guarantee the view, and cloud at your own elevation can hide the canyon instead of revealing a cloud-filled panorama.

Winter and early spring can bring fog-producing conditions, but there is no dependable annual date for a full inversion. Claims that it happens exactly once a year, or precisely once a decade, turn a variable weather event into a timetable it does not have.

For a winter trip, use the park’s winter visitor guidance and check current conditions and closures before travelling. Snow and ice can affect roads and walking routes. Bring warm layers and suitable footwear, and enjoy the view from established paths and overlooks.

Give the photograph a sense of scale

When cloud fills most of the frame, include a recognisable piece of the landscape: a cliff edge, a distant ridge or a tree. It gives the eye somewhere to start. A wider composition shows the extent of the cloud; a tighter one can pick out a single rock formation rising through it.

Take a moment between photographs, too. The changing gaps in the cloud can be the best part of the view. You may arrive hoping for the canyon’s usual panorama and leave delighted by how much of it you could not see.

Temperature structure and visibility are different things

An inversion describes how temperature changes with height. Fog describes droplets suspended in air near the ground. One can help the other persist, but a temperature inversion does not automatically create the cloud-filled scene shown in the film. Enough moisture and suitable cooling are also needed.

For a viewer, the distinction explains why the same canyon can look completely different on two cold mornings. On one day the air may remain clear; on another, a low layer obscures the rock. A photograph documents the visible outcome, while explaining it requires attention to the air as well as the landscape.

Watch the film against a fixed landmark

Choose a ridge that remains visible and watch how the cloud level changes relative to it. That gives the motion a reference. Without a fixed point, a time-lapse can feel like an abstract sea; with one, you can follow the canyon’s shape as parts of it disappear and re-emerge.

The accelerated sequence makes gradual changes easy to see. It does not mean the cloud would move at that pace to a person standing at the overlook. Enjoy the rhythm of the film while remembering that its editing compresses the time spent in the landscape.

The Film and the Park Photograph

Kaibab Elegy and the SKYGLOW photograph introduce Harun Mehmedinović’s creative interpretation of the canyon. Erin Huggins’s National Park Service photograph records a separate inversion in November 2013. Comparing the two is a chance to see how different viewpoints and moments change the same broad phenomenon. In one image, the cloud surface may dominate; in another, the formations rising above it provide the strongest sense of scale.

Try following one rock formation as the cloud moves around it in the film, then return to the still photograph. The film reveals gradual changes, while the photograph gives you time to study an arrangement that lasted only a moment. Both invite the same curiosity: how much of the landscape is hidden, and how does that change the view you think you know?

Dale and Karlie’s Northern Lights Proposal in Lofoten

The camera was ready for the northern lights. Dale Sharpe had something else in mind.

During a trip to Norway’s Lofoten Islands in March 2017, the Australian landscape photographer surprised his partner, Karlie Russell, with a proposal beneath the aurora. The resulting picture brings together green light, snowy mountains, a reflection in the water and one very personal moment.

A landscape photograph with a surprise

Dale and Karlie worked together as DK Photography. According to ABC7’s contemporary report, they had already seen the northern lights together around 30 times. Photographing the aurora was something they shared, which made the setting particularly fitting.

Karlie thought they were setting up another picture and wanted to get on with photographing the landscape. Once the camera was ready, Dale got down on one knee. She said yes.

The proposal also had an unexpected backstory. Months earlier, Karlie had unknowingly discarded a concealed engagement ring while reducing overweight luggage before a flight from the Faroe Islands to Iceland. Dale saved for a replacement, and the later journey gave him another opportunity.

The photograph catches that second attempt in a setting they both loved. For all the attention drawn by the sky, it is the small interaction in the foreground that makes you stop.

Why this northern lights portrait works

Look first at the reflection. The water carries colour into the lower half of the image, so the aurora surrounds the couple instead of sitting only above them. The pale mountains separate the bright sky from its reflection, giving the scene a clear horizon.

The two figures remain easy to read against that setting. You can understand the moment without a close-up, and there is still enough room in the frame for the landscape to matter. It is both a proposal photograph and a portrait of a place.

That balance is also part of what makes Ashley and James’s Everest Base Camp wedding photographs so memorable. In each story, the surroundings help explain something about the celebration.

When can you see the northern lights in Lofoten?

Lofoten lies in northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. Visit Lofoten places its potential aurora-viewing season from late August to mid-April, when nights become dark enough. You do not have to restrict a trip to the middle of winter.

The islands also offer a varied foreground: beaches, mountains, villages and stretches of water. Choosing a place you would enjoy in daylight makes the trip rewarding even if the sky stays quiet.

An aurora forecast and a local weather forecast answer different questions. One helps you judge activity high above Earth; the other helps you judge whether clouds may block your view. Neither can promise the photograph you have in mind.

Where does the light come from?

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center explains that auroras form when energetic particles interact with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Excited atoms and molecules release energy as light. Earth’s magnetic field helps organise the displays into regions around the magnetic poles.

Those moving curtains are far above ordinary weather clouds. The colour in the sky belongs to that upper-atmosphere display; the colour on the water is its reflection.

Taking your own portrait beneath the aurora

Have the practical parts ready before the lights appear. A stable tripod, a tested timer or remote release, and a composition chosen in advance leave more time to enjoy the moment.

In Visit Lofoten’s photography guide, photographer Cody Duncan recommends checking focus carefully and adjusting exposure as the aurora changes. There is no single setting that works for every display. Faster-moving curtains call for different exposure choices from a faint, relatively still arc.

For a portrait, begin with a test frame of the landscape, then add the people. Check both the faces or silhouettes and the sky. A setting that records the aurora beautifully can still leave someone blurred if they move during the exposure. Rehearsing where to stand is much easier before the cold and excitement compete for your attention.

And leave some room for the evening itself. A memorable photograph is a wonderful souvenir; watching the light move together is a good reason to be there in the first place.

The preparation that stayed outside the frame

In the contemporary account, a torch behind the couple and a camera on a timer helped bring the portrait together. The equipment was familiar from their shared photography; the surprise was the proposal about to unfold in front of it. That combination gives the scene its warmth. A carefully arranged landscape picture became the record of a moment Karlie had not expected.

That does not mean the exact lighting arrangement or exposure can be reconstructed from the published image. The useful distinction is between the reported setup and the visible result. One comes from the contemporary account, while the other can be studied directly in the photograph.

A shared photographic life beyond the proposal

The surrounding archive includes views from the Canadian Rockies and Horseshoe Bend in Arizona. Those photographs are not additional angles on the Norwegian proposal. They show other journeys in the couple’s photographic work and give context to their interest in landscapes.

Their first in-person meeting also involved a sunset photograph, this time on Australia’s Gold Coast, according to the account of the proposal. That earlier image gives the March 2017 moment in Lofoten a lovely continuity: photographing places together was already part of their relationship. The northern lights added a spectacular setting, but the connection between the couple and their shared interest is what holds the story together.

Foreground light and sky light have different roles

In the proposal photograph, the aurora establishes the atmosphere and location, while the figures communicate the event. The light around the people helps their outlines remain readable. The reflection then carries the sky’s colour into another part of the frame. These elements work together without requiring every part of the scene to have the same brightness.

When studying the image, ask whether you can understand the gesture before reading the caption. Then look at what the landscape adds after the gesture is clear. This is a useful way to think about environmental portraits: the setting contributes to the story while the people remain its subject. A beautiful background alone would tell a different story.

The Ferryland Iceberg of 2017: A Newfoundland Village Beside a Giant

The houses are the giveaway. Without them, the Ferryland iceberg could almost pass for a snowy mountain on the horizon. Put a row of homes beneath it, and the scale suddenly becomes wonderfully absurd.

In April 2017, this enormous iceberg drew visitors to Ferryland, on Newfoundland’s east coast. Contemporary reporting put its visible height at about 150 feet, or 46 metres. It became one of that spring’s most memorable scenes along Canada’s Iceberg Alley. WIRED’s report from April 2017 records the spectacle and the attention it attracted.

The story behind the Ferryland iceberg photos

These photographs belong to that 2017 event. They show the berg from the shoreline and across the water, with buildings and people providing a familiar reference point. The different viewpoints are part of the fun: in one frame it dominates the village; in another, the wider coast reminds you how much open water surrounds it.

The reported height refers to ice above the waterline. It does not tell us the berg’s full depth, weight or underwater shape. That also makes a neat “bigger than the Titanic iceberg” headline a poor comparison: a single height estimate is not a measurement of either iceberg’s total size.

Where do Newfoundland’s icebergs come from?

An iceberg begins as a piece of a glacier or ice shelf that breaks away and floats. It is different from sea ice, which forms when seawater freezes. NOAA’s iceberg guide also explains the smaller fragments known as bergy bits and growlers.

Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism says most icebergs seen off the province originate in western Greenland, with others coming from the Canadian Arctic. Their arrival along this coast gives Iceberg Alley its name. Much of a floating berg lies underwater, so the visible sculpture is only part of the story. The tourism board’s iceberg viewing guide explains their origins and viewing options.

Planning an iceberg-watching trip

The 2017 photographs are inspiration, rather than a promise of the same view on your visit. Iceberg positions and visibility change. Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism highlights late May and early June as a useful viewing window, while noting that the season varies along the coast.

Check recent sightings. Use IcebergFinder and ask locally before making a detour for a particular berg.
Give the coastline time. Plan other stops you would enjoy even if fog, weather or drifting ice changes the view.
Keep your distance. Icebergs can break apart or roll. Follow local viewing guidance and an experienced operator’s directions on the water.

For photographs, try including a building or a person at a sensible distance: the contrast makes the ice feel enormous without needing an exaggerated caption. Separate visible height from overall size

The reported 150-foot height describes the part visible above water. A photograph from shore does not establish the underwater outline, the mass or the width hidden behind another part of the berg. Two icebergs can have a similar visible height and very different shapes.

The buildings are a more useful guide to the photograph’s scale than a comparison with another iceberg known only through historical estimates. Notice how the berg’s visible face rises above familiar roofs, then look at a wider frame to recover the surrounding water. The change in viewpoint helps you distinguish a striking alignment in a photograph from the much larger three-dimensional scene around it.

What changes between the shoreline and aerial views

From the shore, houses and the iceberg overlap in the composition. That arrangement makes the ice dominate familiar domestic shapes. A wider or higher view gives the water and coast more room, helping the reader understand that the photographed alignment is not a complete map of the distance between them.

Compare the top edge of the berg with its lower face. Bright light can make one surface seem flatter, while shadow reveals recesses and changes in slope. Those tonal differences describe the photographed shape; they should not be mistaken for evidence of the full underwater structure.

Ferryland’s April 2017 iceberg and future visits

In April 2017, the iceberg brought unusual attention to Ferryland and its shoreline. The gallery records that encounter between an everyday coastal community and a vast, temporary visitor. Compare the views that include people with those that give more space to the water. The first make the spectacle feel immediate; the second place it within a coast where drifting ice continues its journey.

The lasting travel idea is to follow recent local observations while allowing the coast itself to be part of the outing. A historical photograph tells you what somebody saw then. A recent sighting can help with a present route, but drifting ice, cloud and visibility still shape what can be seen when you arrive. That distinction makes an iceberg gallery useful without presenting it as a guaranteed attraction in a fixed position.

There is a lovely moment on an aurora night when everyone stops checking their phone and simply looks up. Choosing where to travel can help you find it—but even a famous northern lights destination needs darkness, a break in the clouds and an active sky.

These ten places offer different kinds of trips, from cities with organised evening outings to quieter northern landscapes. The final entry, Ireland, is an occasional viewing opportunity rather than an equivalent alternative to a stay beneath the auroral oval.

1. Fairbanks, Alaska, USA

Fairbanks is a useful starting point if you want an established aurora destination with a choice of guided outings. Explore Fairbanks places its aurora season between August 21 and April 21. Its inland location and position beneath the auroral oval help explain its reputation.

Give yourself several evenings, and compare whether an outing offers a heated base or time travelling between viewpoints. Those details matter when the display takes its time.

2. Tromsø, Norway

Tromsø suits travellers who want restaurants, daytime activities and a wide choice of evening tours. Visit Tromsø describes a viewing season from late August to early April. Coastal weather remains a consideration: a relatively mild climate does not make auroras easier to see through cloud.

Ask whether your excursion stays at one site or can move in search of clearer skies. A flexible plan is more useful than a promise of a spectacular display.

3. Lofoten, Norway

For photographers, Lofoten adds mountain silhouettes and coastal scenery to the sky. The local tourism guide gives a broad season from late August to mid-April. Scout a lawful, accessible viewpoint while it is light, and keep the evening plan responsive to the weather.

4. Abisko and Kiruna, Sweden

Abisko and Kiruna offer another mountain-focused option. Swedish Lapland’s guide to Abisko highlights its relatively dry local climate, limited light pollution and Aurora Sky Station. Clearer conditions are an advantage, though any particular night can still disappoint.

Check transport between your accommodation and viewing site before booking. “Near Kiruna” can cover a wider area than a quick glance at a list might suggest.

5. Saariselkä and northern Finnish Lapland

Finnish Lapland is a good match for a winter holiday with aurora watching woven into the evenings. The Finnish Meteorological Institute identifies Lapland as the country’s strongest viewing region and highlights March and early April when weather is considered.

6. Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada

Yellowknife offers city-based stays, excursions and access to aurora lodges. Northwest Territories Tourism distinguishes two main viewing periods: mid-August through September, and mid-November through early April.

That gives you a useful choice. A late-summer visit offers a different landscape from a deeply wintry stay. Compare the whole experience—including transfers, clothing provision and warm-up facilities—rather than choosing from an aurora photograph alone.

7. Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Churchill is worth considering for a trip with northern lights viewing at its centre. Travel Manitoba lists an August-to-April season, with January to March as its peak period.

Compare the travel arrangements and viewing setup carefully. A comfortable place to wait, local guidance and realistic plans for very cold evenings can make a greater difference to your experience than adding another stop to the itinerary.

8. Reykjavík and the surrounding countryside, Iceland

Reykjavík can work as a base for combining an Iceland holiday with aurora outings on dark nights. Choose an itinerary that leaves room to respond to local conditions. The Icelandic Meteorological Office’s aurora forecast combines a cloud map with activity information: read both, because a promising space-weather forecast cannot make an overcast sky transparent.

9. Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Kangerlussuaq offers a Greenland setting for an aurora-focused stay. Visit Greenland describes the country’s broad viewing season as late August to April and includes guided northern lights outings from Kangerlussuaq.

Build the trip around confirmed local services and current transport connections. A remote location can be part of the appeal, but it makes the practical details of each evening more important.

10. Malin Head, County Donegal, Ireland

Malin Head belongs on a different sort of shortlist: places where an aurora might add something extraordinary to a trip you already want to take. Discover Ireland identifies this northern headland as a viewing spot when conditions align.

At this lower latitude, stronger geomagnetic activity is generally needed than at the northern destinations above. Inishowen is the peninsula containing Malin Head, rather than a nearby town. Enjoy the coastline by day and treat any aurora as a welcome bonus.

Three checks before you head outside

Darkness: northern summer daylight can prevent a visible display even when auroral activity is happening.
Cloud: look at the forecast for your actual viewing location, not just the nearest city.
Activity: use an official space-weather forecast as guidance, then watch the sky.

NOAA explains that auroras form when energetic particles interact with the upper atmosphere. Their visibility depends on several conditions coming together. Plan a holiday you will enjoy regardless, leave room for more than one evening outside, and have the warm drink ready.

Northern Lights Destinations

Salekhard, Tórshavn and Kakslauttanen add three distinct settings to the accompanying photographs: an Arctic Circle city, a North Atlantic island capital and a named accommodation experience in Finland. Compare their foregrounds and the wider journey each suggests. The gallery reaches beyond the ten planning options above, so use each photograph’s own place name when exploring it further. A similar green sky does not make these destinations interchangeable. A base with several nearby viewing options can make it easier to respond to a local break in cloud.

Kakslauttanen’s glass accommodation offers a particular way of spending a northern night; it cannot supply clear skies on demand. In the Faroe Islands, the surrounding island landscape is an attraction in its own right, while an aurora sighting remains dependent on the sky. Salekhard belongs to the historical selection, but appearing in a gallery is not a current recommendation about international access. Check the relevant travel and entry information separately before turning any historical list into bookings.

There are also two different questions behind every aurora forecast: is the upper atmosphere likely to produce a display, and will you be able to see it from the ground? Cloud, daylight and nearby artificial lighting can prevent a view even when auroral activity is present. A photograph taken on an exceptional night cannot establish the chance of success for an entire destination or season.

For a first trip, write down the daytime experience you would enjoy if the sky stayed overcast. Then compare how easily each base lets you reach an authorised dark viewing place. Several nights give you more opportunities to encounter suitable conditions, although no length of stay guarantees a display.

At first, the mountains make these photographs look familiar. Then your eye reaches the waterline, and the difference becomes clear: places once filled by glacier ice have opened into water and exposed ground.

Swedish photographer Christian Åslund created this Svalbard comparison series using historical photographs from the Norwegian Polar Institute alongside views he photographed in 2002. The dates matter. The colour images in this gallery are from an earlier project, not a record of conditions today. See the photographer’s 2002 Svalbard collection for the original project context.

What comparison photographs can tell us

Repeat photography makes a large change easier to understand. A familiar ridge gives the eye an anchor, while an ice front in a different position reveals a landscape that has changed between exposures. People and boats provide scale, but they are not measuring instruments.

For a careful comparison, look beyond how dramatic the pictures feel:

Dates and season: seasonal snow can change the appearance of rock and ice.
Viewpoint: a different camera position or focal length changes apparent distances.
Ice boundaries: distinguish a glacier front from loose floating ice in the water.
Supporting measurements: a photograph alone cannot calculate total ice-volume loss or separate every cause of a glacier’s movement.

What newer research adds

A glacier’s mass balance compares how much ice it gains with how much it loses. Researchers combine field observations, remote sensing and modelling to study that change across a region, rather than relying on one striking viewpoint.

A 2025 study of Svalbard’s exceptional 2024 summer estimated summer glacier mass loss at approximately 61.7 ± 11.1 billion tonnes—about 1% of the archipelago’s total ice volume. The study linked the exceptional melt to a prolonged period of unusually high temperatures and atmospheric conditions that supplied substantial energy for melting. Those are regional estimates for a defined period, not measurements calculated from the seven photographs above.

Åslund also returned to the subject with a 2024 glacier comparison project. Following that later work gives the original gallery a useful next chapter without relabelling old photographs as new.

Glaciers, icebergs and lake ice are different stories

The distinctions make winter landscapes more interesting to read. A glacier is a persistent body of land ice that moves under its own weight; an iceberg is a floating piece broken from glacial ice. A frozen lake has a seasonal surface cover formed from the water beneath it.

Read a repeat photograph against fixed landmarks

Begin with the mountains rather than the ice. A distinctive ridge or rocky headland provides a reference that helps connect the old and later photographs. Once those fixed features line up, the changed position of the glacier becomes much easier to distinguish from a difference in framing. The amount of visible foreground water, exposed rock and ice can then be examined in relation to the same setting.

A pair of images does not by itself measure the glacier’s complete volume, thickness or annual mass balance. Those are different quantities requiring additional observations. It can, however, make a substantial change in the visible landscape understandable in a way that a number alone may not. The strongest reading combines that visual evidence with research that states what was measured and over which period.

Christian Åslund made the later photographs in this comparison in 2002. The pairings therefore document a specific historical interval, with the Norwegian Polar Institute archive and the photographer’s work providing their provenance. Read the dates before looking for the changed ice margin, then use the mountains to connect the viewpoints. The result is a clearer understanding of what changed between those photographs, rather than an assumption that the later frame represents today.

Amtrak Meets a Snow-Covered Track: Nick Colvin’s Slow-Motion Film

The train arrives—and the snow arrives with it. Nick Colvin’s slow-motion film turns a wintry platform scene into a curling white wave, with snow sweeping towards the people waiting nearby.

The clip was published on March 15, 2017, after the storm widely known as Stella. Contemporary reporting placed the scene at Rhinecliff, New York. Colvin’s own description connects the unusually dramatic arrival with the fresh snowfall. His original upload is called Amtrak Snow-mo Collision.

Watch Nick Colvin’s original video on YouTube. The slow motion makes the moving snow especially striking: individual pieces briefly stand out before the scene disappears into a white cloud.

The word “collision” in the upload’s title describes the train meeting the accumulated snow. It should not be read as a report that two trains crashed. Nor can the apparent motion in a slow-motion clip establish the train’s actual speed.

Why does the snow rise into a wave?

As a moving train meets snow occupying its path, that snow has to move out of the way. Some is pushed forward and sideways; loose material can also be carried by the disturbed air around the train. Gravity then brings the airborne pieces back down. The combination produces the rolling shape that makes this scene so memorable.

That is a general explanation of the motion, rather than a technical reconstruction of this particular arrival. The video does not supply measurements of snow density, accumulation depth or train speed. It also cannot tell us everything about the decisions made before the train reached the platform.

One useful reminder for a snowy station

Winter scenery can make waiting for a train feel like an unexpected photo opportunity. Keep the camera secondary to the platform instructions. Amtrak’s boarding guidance says passengers should remain behind the yellow line and safety strip while waiting, and stay clear of moving trains.

Follow staff directions and any additional restrictions during wintry conditions. A zoomed-in view from an authorised waiting area is preferable to moving towards the track for a dramatic angle.

Why the platform makes the snow’s movement so clear

The platform gives the scene a fixed edge against which to judge movement. At first the snow is part of the track bed; as the train reaches it, it becomes a moving cloud with a distinct leading edge. Compare that edge with the stationary platform and the train behind it. This makes the change from resting snow to displaced material easier to follow than it would be against an empty white background.

Slow motion also changes the balance of the scene. A short event becomes long enough to reveal separate folds and clumps, encouraging viewers to study its shape. It does not establish how much warning the people on the platform had in ordinary time. The spectacle of the replay should therefore be kept separate from the practical experience of waiting beside an operating railway.

Keep the slow-motion treatment in mind when returning to the opening frames. The replay gives time to study snow that moved through an ordinary station arrival much more quickly than it appears on screen. Colvin's credit, the Rhinecliff setting and the March 2017 storm context explain why this is a particular event rather than a routine view of every winter train. The film is especially effective because it stretches a brief change in movement: snow resting beside the track becomes a moving cloud, then falls back into the surroundings.

A Moose in Broken Lake Ice: The Swedish Rescue Account

A skating outing became an unexpected wildlife encounter when a group in Sweden found a moose struggling in broken lake ice. The animal could not get out on its own, and the people nearby decided to help it reach shallower water.

The original video, Älg i vak, was uploaded by Viktor Johannessen in February 2017. His description identifies his partner, Sigrid Sjösteen, as the person who began opening a route through the ice. He says the group took turns for about half an hour before the moose reached land.

The account behind the moose rescue

Johannessen explains that the moose had made repeated attempts to escape but could neither pull itself out nor break a route to shore. The people opened a passage towards shallower water, where it could find footing. Cottage Life’s contemporary report also places the encounter in Sweden.

The sources identify Sweden without establishing the exact lake. Johannessen also describes a group taking turns, with Sigrid Sjösteen beginning the effort to open a route. That fuller account gives the people involved their place in the story. It is more informative than treating the outcome as the work of one unnamed woman at a guessed location.

Watch the rescue in Johannessen’s original upload. Knowing the account behind the short clip makes the relief at its outcome easier to appreciate: the aim was to give the animal a way to leave the water under its own power.

If you find an animal in broken ice

A successful rescue on video is not evidence that the same approach is safe to repeat. Ice can vary across a lake, and a large, frightened animal adds another unpredictable element.

Stay on secure ground, keep children and pets away, and contact local wildlife authorities or emergency responders for advice. Give them the location and describe what you can see. Do not step onto suspect ice or try to handle the animal yourself. Official ice-safety guidance and wildlife response guidance explain why local assessment and trained help matter.

A winter landscape can hide more than it reveals

The still surface of a frozen lake can look reassuring in a photograph. Our Lake Baikal photography feature looks at some of ice’s remarkable patterns while separating that visual beauty from assumptions about whether it is safe to travel on.

Separate the rescue story from a rescue method

The encounter interrupts a skating outing with a problem on an entirely different scale. A large animal is unable to regain support from the broken surface, while the surrounding lake may still look continuous in the wider view. That contrast explains the urgency of Johannessen's account. It also shows why the finished clip cannot provide all the information needed to judge another incident: local water depth, ice strength and the animal's condition are not transferable from the apparent similarity of two snowy scenes.

The story describes efforts to help the moose reach a place where it could get out. That outcome does not tell a viewer the strength of surrounding ice, the water depth or the condition of another animal in a different incident. Those missing details matter. A dramatic rescue clip is an account of one event, not a set of instructions that can be transferred safely to any frozen lake.

It is possible to appreciate the rescuers’ concern without turning improvisation into the lesson. If a similar situation is encountered, alert the relevant local emergency or wildlife service and keep people and pets away from the unstable area. The most useful information to pass on is the location and what can be observed from a secure position.

The Viral Penguin Fight: Pair Bonds, Nests and Human Storytelling

A wildlife clip became a miniature relationship drama when National Geographic presented a fight between penguins as a husband discovering an unfaithful partner. The title was irresistible to the internet. The behaviour deserves a closer look, too.

The original film is Homewrecking Penguin, from Animal Fight Night, on the official Nat Geo Animals channel. It shows a forceful conflict between birds, framed by narration about a returning male and another penguin at the nest. The link contains a bloody animal fight.

Why the “cheating penguin” story caught on

A familiar human storyline makes an unfamiliar animal encounter easy to follow. We recognise a home, a rival and an apparent rejection, then start supplying motives of our own. That is an understandable reaction to storytelling, but it is not the same as measuring what a bird is thinking.

Words such as “wife,” “betrayal” and “revenge” belong to the programme’s dramatic framing. The footage does not establish that penguins understand human marriage rules or experience this encounter in the way its narration suggests.

Pair bonds and nest competition

Penguin breeding relationships can still be fascinating without the soap-opera vocabulary. In Magellanic penguins, for example, pairs can maintain their bond over several breeding seasons. Males may also fight over nests and mates, and the outcome depends on circumstances including when a conflict occurs in the breeding cycle. The University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web species account describes these behaviours.

A repeated pair bond is a biological relationship, not a guarantee that the same birds remain together for life. Likewise, a fight near a nest is evidence of conflict; it does not, by itself, reveal every event that preceded it.

Keep the curiosity; question the caption

When a wildlife video feels uncannily human, ask three small questions: who filmed or published it, which actions are visible, and which claims come from narration? Those questions preserve the interesting part of the encounter while making room for uncertainty.

The same distinction helps with a gentler viral story: the Gimmelwald cat that a hiker followed down a trail. The encounter is charming, even without assuming we know what the cat intended.

What the relationship language adds—and what it cannot establish

The language of an “unfaithful wife” gives the clip an immediate plot, with roles that a human audience recognises. That is a storytelling device. Observations of birds returning to nests, interacting with partners and fighting can be described directly; claims about betrayal or moral intention go beyond what those actions alone establish.

A more useful question is what resource or reproductive opportunity is involved. The nest, the timing within the breeding season and the individuals’ earlier associations all affect how a researcher would interpret an encounter. A short edited scene gives viewers only part of that context, even when the underlying footage is authentic.

Try describing a short part of the sequence before attending to its relationship language. Which bird approaches, where does the interaction take place, and what movement is visible? Then compare that description with the biological background and the programme's narration. The exercise reveals how much of the familiar plot is supplied by words rather than by the images alone. It does not make the behaviour uninteresting. Instead, attention shifts towards the nest, the individuals' associations and the timing of the encounter, questions that a researcher would need to investigate beyond the selected scenes.

Test a small handful of snow first. If it holds together when gently packed, try a broad base with a smaller head. If it stays loose and powdery, choose a low mound or wait for more workable conditions rather than forcing a tall stack.

Decide on one idea before collecting props: a surprised expression, a favourite animal or a familiar activity. Keep walking routes clear, use decorations you can retrieve, and take a photograph before the weather redesigns your masterpiece.

Choose the joke before choosing the size

The strongest ideas in this collection can be described in a few words: a snowman using a phone, a cat meeting its snowy double, or two figures sitting down together. Decide on that little story first. It will tell you which features matter and which can stay simple.

For the phone user, a recognizable arm position and a small dark rectangle do much of the work. For the grumpy face, eyebrows matter more than an elaborate body. For the snowcat, ears, posture and the direction of the tail establish the character. This gives you a practical way to adapt an ambitious photograph to the amount of snow and space actually available.

Build an expression from a few movable details

Before pressing decorations firmly into place, try different eye and mouth positions. Bring the eyes closer together, tilt an eyebrow or move the mouth lower. Small changes can turn the same rounded head from surprised to sleepy. Take a quick photograph of each arrangement if you want to compare the expressions.

A twig arm can be a line of action rather than just an accessory. Raised arms suggest excitement; a forward arm can point toward a companion or prop. In a group scene, give the figures a reason to face each other. Their relationship becomes easier to read than if every snowman looks straight at the camera.

Use the available setting as part of the scene

The window visitor and the pair at a table work because the surrounding object completes the idea. A small figure beside a flowerpot or a miniature bench can have a similar effect. You do not need to occupy a working mailbox, public seat or play structure to borrow that relationship between character and setting.

Keep the build compact enough that its outline remains clear. A broad, low animal can suit snow that is difficult to stack, while a small group can use several modest mounds. The objective is a readable character, not a contest to reproduce the largest example in the gallery.

Finish with a photograph and a simple cleanup

Make one wider frame that includes the scene and one closer view of the expression. If the wider photograph does not explain the joke, simplify the surroundings or adjust the direction of the figure. If the face disappears, move closer rather than adding more decorations.

Count the reusable props you put outside and collect them when the sculpture softens. Buttons, fabric and other accessories should not be left scattered after the snow has gone. That last step also gives you a small kit for the next snowfall: a familiar set of materials that can become a completely different cast of characters.

White cracks run across deep blue ice like branches, while bubbles seem to hang beneath the surface. In Kristina Makeeva’s photographs of frozen Lake Baikal, the foreground can be every bit as absorbing as the mountains beyond it.

A lake with an extraordinary history

Lake Baikal lies in Siberia, Russia. UNESCO identifies it as the world’s oldest and deepest lake, with an age of around 25 million years. Its immense volume holds roughly a fifth of the world’s unfrozen freshwater reserve, and its long isolation has supported a remarkable variety of species found nowhere else.

That history is a useful counterpoint to the pictures. The winter ice is a temporary surface on a very old ecosystem. It should not be confused with the persistent land ice in our Svalbard glacier comparison feature.

What to notice in the ice photographs

Start with the direction of the lines. In the wider views, cracks lead towards a rock formation or a distant shoreline. In the closer pictures, the same subject becomes almost abstract: white threads, darker blue spaces and clusters of pale bubbles.

Some frames show transparent-looking sections; others are full of cloudy textures. That variation is part of their appeal. A photograph cannot establish that the ice is the “clearest in the world,” that the lakebed is visible everywhere or that every trapped bubble contains the same gas.

Notice, too, what the light is doing. Warm colour near the horizon gives the blue foreground a different mood from the overcast scenes. You can borrow that way of looking for a small frozen puddle or a winter shoreline without needing to recreate the photographer’s route.

Baikal’s giant ice rings: another scale entirely

Some Baikal ice patterns are so large that they are easier to recognise from space. NASA’s account of research into giant ice rings describes features several kilometres across, associated with circulating, relatively warm water below the ice.

Field measurements helped researchers connect the rings with underwater eddies. Faster circulation around an eddy’s edge can promote melting there. These satellite-scale rings are different from the small bubbles and cracks in Makeeva’s gallery; the explanation should not be applied indiscriminately to every circular shape in ice.

The research also provides a practical reminder: ice thickness can vary in ways that are not obvious from a beautiful surface view.

A photograph is not an ice-safety assessment

Images of people on a frozen lake do not establish that the same place is safe on another day—or that it was safe when photographed. Avoid relying on a general month, a claimed lake-wide thickness or someone else’s tracks to decide whether to go onto ice.

Use current local instructions and qualified guidance for any winter outing. Do not treat this archive as a route recommendation or as evidence that a particular vehicle can travel across the lake. The Swedish moose rescue story is another reminder of how deceptive a seemingly continuous frozen surface can be.

Enjoy the details without rushing past them

The strongest lesson in this collection is photographic: lower the viewpoint, find a line that leads into the frame, and give the small details room to compete with the big scenery. A few bubbles beneath your feet can be as visually interesting as a whole mountain range.

Baikal’s depth, surface ice and Angara legend

Baikal’s depth and the thickness of its winter ice describe completely different dimensions. A photograph looking through clear surface ice does not mean the lake bottom is visible wherever the water is deep, and one measured ice thickness cannot represent a lake of this size. This distinction preserves the wonder of the transparent foreground without attaching an unsafe general claim about what the entire surface can support.

The legend of Baikal and his daughter Angara gives the lake a different kind of story. Angara carries water towards the Yenisei, while Shaman Stone appears in the account of her father’s response. The cultural narrative sits alongside a geographical fact: the Angara is Baikal’s outlet. Reading both invites you to notice how a real feature of the landscape becomes a character in a story told about it.

In the gallery, look separately at reflections above the surface and inclusions beneath it. A mountain reflected on smooth ice, a white fracture and a trapped bubble occupy different visual layers. Recognising those layers helps explain why a close view can feel almost abstract while still being a photograph of the same enormous lake.

From a vast freshwater lake to a small foreground detail

The original feature gives Baikal’s maximum depth as 1,642 metres and draws attention to its exceptional freshwater volume. These lake-wide characteristics explain its significance, while Makeeva’s pictures often concentrate on a surface only a few steps across. That contrast is useful: the same place can be studied as an immense geographical system or approached through an individual fracture and reflection. Neither scale replaces the other, and a close-up should not be asked to prove a claim about the entire lake.

The Gimmelwald Cat and the Hiker: An Unexpected Alpine Encounter

A black-and-white cat, an Alpine trail and a hiker with a sore ankle: it is an excellent beginning for an unexpected mountain story. The encounter near Gimmelwald, Switzerland, became popular after the traveller shared it online in 2016.

His original Reddit post describes the cat he followed when he was unsure how to get down. A later clarification in his video description is worth reading alongside the headlines: the experience was real to him, but he felt the news coverage had exaggerated it.

What the hiker actually described

According to his account, some usual routes were closed and retracing his steps would have meant a substantial walk through snow. His ankle was already sprained from an earlier incident. He stopped to rest and eat, encountered the cat, and followed as it walked ahead and looked back.

The two eventually went separate ways. The hiker continued along the track, which led down the mountain. That is a smaller claim than a cat deliberately escorting an injured stranger all the way to safety—and it is still a lovely piece of travel luck.

Where is Gimmelwald?

Gimmelwald is a small, car-free mountain village in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland, above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Switzerland Tourism places it at 1,367 metres and describes it as a starting point for walks into the surrounding mountain landscape.

It is easy to see why the setting adds to the story’s appeal: the cat in the photograph is framed by steep, snow-streaked mountains. But Gimmelwald and the more widely known Grindelwald are different places. Check the name when looking up the village or planning transport.

A friendly cat is a bonus, rather than a navigation plan

Mountain days go more smoothly when the return route receives as much attention as the outward walk. Check local trail information and seasonal transport before leaving, and take closures seriously. An animal walking confidently ahead cannot tell you whether a route is suitable, open or safe for you.

If a path is closed or an injury changes what you can manage, reassess the outing and seek local help. The useful lesson here is to notice when the plan needs changing, rather than to hope an unusually photogenic guide will appear.

The return route is the heart of the account

The traveller’s description places the encounter near Gimmelwald after his intended route was unavailable. That detail explains the uncertainty more clearly than simply saying he became lost somewhere in the Swiss Alps. An unfamiliar junction, a closed path and an injured ankle can change an otherwise ordinary outing; the cat’s appearance became memorable within that particular situation.

Gimmelwald and Grindelwald are separate Bernese Oberland destinations, despite names that are easy to confuse. This encounter belongs near Gimmelwald, where the traveller described a sore ankle and an unavailable intended route. That small geographical detail gives the story a real setting. It also makes further reading more useful than a broad label about a cat somewhere in the Swiss Alps.

The hiker interpreted the cat’s repeated movement and glances as guidance, and other people reportedly recognised a local animal. That is a charming account of an encounter, but it cannot establish what the cat understood about his difficulty. The useful human lesson remains straightforward: know the usable return route, check closures and keep a navigation option that does not depend on a fortunate meeting.

Snow on the Sahara’s Edge: Karim Bouchetata’s Aïn Séfra Photographs

Orange dunes striped with white snow are a wonderful double take. In December 2016, photographer Karim Bouchetata captured that contrast near Aïn Séfra in Algeria, where a rare snowfall briefly gave the desert edge a very different appearance.

The event took place on December 19, 2016. These are photographs from that snowfall, rather than images of a new storm. NASA Earth Observatory’s contemporary account places Aïn Séfra between the Atlas Mountains and the northern edge of the Sahara.

The story behind the snow-covered dunes

What makes Bouchetata’s images so appealing is how much colour survives the snowfall. Orange sand remains visible between the pale streaks, so the curves of the dunes become easier to follow. In the wider frames, the darker hills add a third layer to the scene.

The gallery also moves beyond an isolated sand pattern: buildings, vegetation and surrounding slopes put the snowfall back into a lived-in landscape. The photographer’s original public account is the creator reference supplied with the archive.

What did “the first time in 37 years” actually mean?

The widely repeated claim referred to a local record, not to every part of the Sahara. NASA’s 2016 report identified February 1979 as the previous recorded snowfall in Aïn Séfra. Expanding that statement to “no snow anywhere in the Sahara for 37 years” changes its meaning and makes the headline misleading.

Location matters in weather stories. A desert covers a large area with different elevations and local conditions; one town’s record cannot describe every mountain or dune within it.

Yes, snow returned after 2016

NASA documented another snowfall near Aïn Séfra in January 2018, including satellite imagery of white mountain tops and dune crests. Separately, Copernicus recorded snowy peaks near Benzireg in January 2023, elsewhere in northwestern Algeria.

Those later observations are separate events and places. They add context to the 2016 gallery; they do not change the date of the photographs shown here.

How can a desert receive snow?

“Desert” describes a climate with very little precipitation, rather than a guarantee of constant heat. Snow still needs suitable cold conditions and moisture. The Copernicus account notes that snowfall in this dry region is unusual and that snow at lower elevations often melts quickly.

That brief overlap is part of what makes the photographs special. The landscape does not need to turn completely white: a light covering can pick out a dune’s shape and reveal details that a familiar sunny view might hide.

A rare local event is not a description of the whole Sahara

The place name matters as much as the contrast of colours. These photographs concern the area around Aïn Séfra in Algeria, not a snowfall covering the entire Sahara. A vast desert includes differences in elevation and local weather, so an unusual event in one location should not be expanded into a claim about every part of it.

The December 2016 pictures also belong to a dated sequence of reported snow events. Keeping that date beside the photographs prevents the old “first in 37 years” headline from being mistaken for news about this winter. Later snowfall does not diminish the value of Bouchetata’s images; it changes how the event should be introduced.

Look along the boundary between snow and exposed sand rather than only at the widest white-and-orange view. Thin patches let the dune's texture show through, while fuller stripes emphasise its curves. In a closer frame, those edges can become the main subject; in a wider one, hills and buildings place them within the landscape around Aïn Séfra. The two scales complement each other. Bouchetata's photographs are memorable because a temporary covering changes how familiar forms can be read, with the December 2016 date identifying the particular encounter rather than claiming every later winter repeated it.

Norway’s Nature House: A Cob Home Inside a Glass Dome

A glass dome on a snowy Norwegian island sounds like the setting for a fairy tale. Inside this one, the details are delightfully domestic: a dining table, plants, timber balconies and a home built around a family's own ideas of comfort.

This is the Hjertefølger family's Nature House on Sandhornøya, north of the Arctic Circle. Benjamin and Ingrid Hjertefølger moved into the home in 2013. The photographs below revisit the project that brought their unusual approach to living in the north to a wider audience.

A house inside a greenhouse

Look closely at the exterior photographs and you can see two structures: the transparent outer dome and the separate house within it. The space between them gives plants, paths and living areas a sheltered setting while leaving the landscape in view.

The project description credits Benjamin Hjertefølger and Solardome. It records a dome measuring 15 metres across and 7.5 metres high, with 360 glass panels. The often-repeated claim that it was built in three weeks refers to the dome's on-site assembly, rather than construction of the entire family home. What the dome contributes to winter comfort

The outer enclosure creates a buffer against the weather. It does not make the inner house's walls, heating or ventilation unnecessary. The construction account also describes insulation, attention to airtightness and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Those less photogenic details matter just as much as the beautiful glass shell.

It helps to separate two ideas that sometimes get bundled together under “solar.” Passive solar design uses sunlight entering a building to contribute warmth; photovoltaic panels generate electricity. Thermal mass, meanwhile, stores heat and releases it over time. Insulation slows heat loss. A sunny photograph cannot tell us how much energy a home uses across a whole winter. The most inviting details are inside

The dining area makes a lovely counterpoint to the precise geometry outside. Rounded openings, textured walls and timber give the rooms a handmade character. In one view, the dome's triangular grid frames a balcony; in another, a long table brings the scene down to the scale of an ordinary shared meal.

The photographs also show how much the view changes the house. Trees create a dark edge to the glass. Water and distant mountains extend the apparent space beyond the room. The same dome can look open and airy by day, then become a small lantern in the evening landscape.

A garden with seasons, too

A greenhouse can make a demanding climate more hospitable to plants, but the list of crops grown there should not be read as a promise that every fruit is harvested year-round. Daylight and the choice of crop still matter.

There is plenty to enjoy here without turning the house into a claim of effortless self-sufficiency. It offers a memorable question for any home: could the transition between indoors and outdoors become a place to spend time, rather than simply a doorway to pass through?

Two enclosures with different jobs

The domestic building and its surrounding dome should be read as two related spaces. The cob house contains the rooms where the family lives; the larger transparent enclosure also shelters a zone around it. In the photographs, that intermediate area is as important as the exterior silhouette, because it shows how planting and household life fit between the home and the outer shell.

“Solar” does not automatically mean that the glass structure generates electricity. Admitting sunlight, sheltering a garden and producing electrical power are different functions. Likewise, a protected growing area is not proof that every crop listed in a feature is harvested throughout the dark winter. The family’s experience is most informative when the building’s features are distinguished from broad claims of complete self-sufficiency.

The dining table, balcony and plants make the Nature House feel like a home before it feels like an architectural experiment. Look at where the family’s rooms meet the space beneath the dome. An ordinary activity such as sitting down to eat acquires a different setting when the garden and weather are visible beyond an inner wall. Those details explain the project through daily life, alongside the memorable silhouette of the enclosure in snow.

The materials make the interior a different experience

The cob home is described as using an earth mixture including sand, clay and organic material, while the surrounding dome has a very different visual character. How an Igloo Slows Heat Loss: Snow, Air and Shelter

A shelter made of snow seems an unlikely place to warm up. Yet an igloo works because snow is much more than frozen water: it also contains air. Combine that insulation with protection from the wind, and warmth produced inside has a much harder time escaping.

Snow slows heat loss

The key distinction is snow versus solid ice. Snow contains spaces between its ice grains. The air in those spaces helps it resist heat transfer, so a wall of snow behaves differently from a slab of dense, clear ice.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center describes snow as an insulating layer that slows heat flowing from relatively warm ground towards colder air. It also stresses that snow changes as it settles, compresses, melts and refreezes. There is no single air content that accurately describes every snowbank or building block. An everyday comparison is a winter jacket. The jacket does not manufacture warmth; it helps you retain it. An igloo's enclosure serves a related purpose at the scale of a small room.

Where does the warmth come from?

People release heat through normal metabolism. Retaining some of that heat can make the air inside warmer than the air outside. Shelter from moving air also reduces the direct exposure to wind that someone would experience in the open.

That does not give every igloo a standard indoor temperature. Its size, snow condition, openings, outdoor weather and occupants all affect the result. Claims that any snow shelter will automatically feel like a centrally heated living room leave out those differences.

The layout matters as well as the walls

Traditional designs often place the living or sleeping area above a lower entrance passage. Warmer air tends to rise, while cooler air collects lower down. The entrance arrangement helps make use of that difference.

Igloo building also draws on detailed Inuit knowledge of snow, structure and local conditions. PBS NOVA's account describes Roald Amundsen learning from Netsilik Inuit on King William Island. Enjoy it as an explanation, rather than a complete guide to sleeping outdoors. A snow shelter needs sound construction and ventilation; sealing it up or bringing a stove inside introduces dangers that a short animation cannot teach you to manage. For an outing, choose instruction from a qualified local guide.

Insulation and heat production are different things

Snow does not generate warmth simply by being arranged into walls. The useful distinction is between heat supplied inside a shelter and the rate at which that heat escapes. Air held among snow grains helps slow the transfer, while an enclosure reduces exposure to wind. That explains the apparently surprising material choice without suggesting that a snow structure becomes warm automatically.

Snow and dense clear ice contain the same frozen substance but arrange it differently. In snow, spaces between grains hold air; in a dense slab, much less of that space is available. That structural difference helps explain why the material chosen for a shelter matters. Think of the snow wall as a network of ice grains and air pockets, rather than one solid block behaving exactly like the ice in a drink.

A scientific demonstration of the principle is not a complete survival or construction guide. Real shelter performance depends on the material, design, weather and ventilation, and an enclosed space should not be treated as permission to introduce an improvised flame or heater. The film is most useful as an explanation of heat flow: identify the heat source, the paths by which heat can leave, and what the snow walls change about those paths.

A Wolf-Shaped Aurora: Marja-Terttu Karlsson’s Remarkable Photograph

First you see the green sweep of the northern lights. Then a pointed muzzle, an arched back and what looks remarkably like an animal bounding across the sky. Marja-Terttu Karlsson's aurora photograph is a wonderful example of how a fleeting shape can become the whole story of an image.

The photograph predates the viral reposts

Swedish broadcaster SVT reported the image in December 2015. Karlsson, who lived in Pajala in Swedish Lapland, told the broadcaster that she noticed the animal-like shape when she examined her photographs on a computer. She described a resemblance to a fox or wolf. It was a discovery in the pictures, rather than an animal she had gone out to photograph. Read SVT's original interview.

The date matters because the photograph has circulated repeatedly since then, including in this site's 2017 archive. A new share does not mean a new aurora event.

Was the wolf shape edited in?

Karlsson told SVT that the image was genuine. In a follow-up report on 21 December 2015, the broadcaster published pictures from before and after the wolf-like formation, describing them as unedited.

That is more useful context than an unsupported “definitely real” caption. It gives readers both the photographer's account and a contemporary report showing the surrounding sequence. It is not a separate forensic examination by Snow Addiction.

Why the northern lights make such surprising shapes

Auroras are light emitted high in the atmosphere after energetic particles interact with atmospheric gases. Earth's magnetic field guides the particles, and the resulting display can form arcs, rays and folded curtains. Those structures change, sometimes rapidly, as activity develops. NOAA explains how auroras form and move.

A still photograph isolates one arrangement from that changing display. In this frame, the brighter upper curve suggests a back, while the narrow projection on the right reads as a muzzle. The dark trees below give the green form room to stand out. Once someone points out the animal, it becomes wonderfully difficult to see anything else.

You might see a wolf, a fox or simply a dramatic curtain of light. The resemblance is a way of reading the photograph; it does not establish a physical animal or a message in the sky.

A reason to keep looking

The enjoyable lesson here is about attention. The photograph rewards a second look, and the surrounding sequence reminds us that the sky did not hold the pose. If you photograph an aurora, keep neighbouring frames as well as your favourite: together, they preserve something of the display's movement and help explain the image later.

Why a shape can dominate the way we see an image

Once someone identifies the wolf, it becomes difficult to look at the photograph without finding it again. The suggested muzzle, back and limbs organise a flowing band of light into a familiar animal. Another viewer may initially see only the aurora, then recognise the same outline after being prompted. That change happens in the interpretation of the image, not necessarily in the image itself.

The photographer’s account that she did not deliberately construct the shape should be kept separate from claims about supernatural meaning. An authentic photograph can contain a striking resemblance without proving that the resemblance carries a message. Symbolic readings may be personally meaningful, but they are not an explanation of the atmospheric event.

Try looking first at the full photograph, then at its smaller curves. The whole encourages the wolf-like reading; the parts reveal softer boundaries and changes in brightness that resist a precise outline. Once you return to the full view, the animal may seem to leap out again. That shifting perception is part of the photograph’s pleasure: a familiar shape briefly gathers within a much less orderly curtain of light.

A squirrel peers over a camera. Another raises a snowball. Two stretch upwards beneath a pine cone, looking for all the world like tiny volleyball players. Vadim Trunov's photographs turn a winter scene into a collection of wonderfully comic encounters.

The humour comes partly from timing and partly from the setting the photographer created. As the original account accompanying this collection explained, food and props helped attract the squirrels. These are playful photographic scenes, rather than evidence that squirrels have taken up photography or organised a snowball tournament.

A camera crew with very small paws

Start with the camera pictures. Placing familiar equipment beside a small animal changes the way we read its posture: a squirrel leaning forward suddenly looks like a photographer studying a viewfinder. The little tripod makes the illusion especially convincing.

Notice the bird in some frames, too. It gives the camera an apparent subject and makes the scene feel like a portrait session. That is our human interpretation of the arrangement; the animals' positions alone cannot tell us that they understand the equipment.

The details are worth a second look: the soft backgrounds, the upright ear tufts and the contrast between warm fur and pale snow. Even without the joke, the compositions give the animals plenty of character. More of Trunov's work can be found through his photography portfolio.

Snowballs, a snowman and a very tempting cone

The snowy sequence uses a different set of visual cues. A round white shape held between two paws resembles a snowball ready to throw. Set that shape above another snowball and, to a human viewer, a squirrel appears to be putting the finishing touch on a snowman.

Enjoying the pictures without copying the setup

For your own wildlife photographs, take inspiration from Trunov's attention to posture and background. A patient observation session can reveal a pause, a leap or an expressive-looking pose without arranging a scene around food.

Use a longer lens, leave animals room to move and follow the rules of the place you are visiting. The US National Park Service's wildlife-watching guidance explains why feeding and disturbing animals can cause problems. Its local distance rules apply to its parks; the broader lesson is to let the animal's needs guide the encounter.

A familiar object changes how we read a pose

The camera in these photographs supplies a ready-made role for the animal beside it. Leaning toward a viewfinder resembles the posture of a photographer; a raised paw near a round object resembles a throw. The human interpretation is immediate because the objects and gestures are familiar to us.

Remove the imagined job title and describe only what is visible: a squirrel leaning, reaching or holding an object. That description still leaves room for humour while keeping the animal’s intention open. It avoids turning a charming resemblance into a claim about what the squirrel understands.

Timing and background carry the comedy

The pine-cone sequence relies on a brief position of bodies and objects within the frame. An outstretched animal appears to reach toward the airborne shape, while the surrounding pale space makes the movement easy to follow. A cluttered background would compete with the very small gesture that makes the image funny.

The camera scenes use a steadier arrangement, with equipment creating a recognizable setting before the animal enters its apparent role. Comparing those two kinds of image makes the gallery more interesting: some pictures depend on a passing moment, while others gain meaning from the object already placed in the scene.

Food and props in Trunov’s squirrel photographs

Trunov used food to attract the squirrels, as the account accompanying the photographs explains. The props and that preparation are part of how the scenes were made, alongside the timing needed to capture a reaching paw or a sudden leap. Knowing the setup lets you enjoy the visual joke on its own terms: a photographer has arranged an encounter, and the animal’s movement supplies an expressive, unpredictable part of the result.

For your own observation, borrow the attention to posture, texture and background rather than treating the food setup as instructions. There is plenty to photograph in an animal pausing or moving through its normal surroundings. A caption can say that a pose resembles a tiny camera operator while still being clear that this is the viewer’s visual joke.

David Burdeny’s Antarctic Iceberg: The Geometry of Mercators Projection

Four areas of colour meet in one remarkable Antarctic photograph: pale sky, bright ice, textured water and deep shadow. David Burdeny's Mercators Projection, Antarctica, 2007 turns an enormous iceberg into a composition that almost looks drawn with a ruler.

The photograph belongs to Burdeny's North/South series. Its appeal is immediate, but give it a little time: the picture becomes more interesting when you stop looking for a perfectly symmetrical object and start following the boundaries of light.

How to read the four-part composition

The upper-right area is the iceberg's face. Its nearly vertical edge drops towards the waterline, while the lighter sky occupies the upper left. Across the bottom of the frame, the sea continues beneath both.

On the right, the iceberg's shadow darkens the water. On the left, small waves catch more light, revealing a silvery texture. The waterline and the edge of the shadow create the strong division that holds the image together.

The dark lower-right area is water in shadow, not a view through the sea of the iceberg's submerged base. Nor is it a mirror image of the white face above. Look at the surface texture: it continues across the lower part of the picture.

Geometry with wonderfully untidy details

At a glance, the photograph is all straight lines and broad blocks of tone. Up close, the ice face is irregular and richly textured. The sea is restless, and the sky has its own soft variation. That tension makes the picture rewarding: a very orderly composition contains surfaces that refuse to be perfectly neat.

The frame also withholds familiar scale markers. There is no person or house beside the ice. Compare that feeling with the 2017 Ferryland iceberg photographs, where buildings along the Newfoundland shore make the berg's size easier to grasp.

What an iceberg photograph can tell us

Icebergs begin as ice on land and enter the sea when they break away from glaciers or ice shelves. Much of a floating iceberg lies beneath the surface, but this photograph does not measure that hidden shape. NOAA's introduction to icebergs explains the distinction between their visible and submerged parts.

For photographers, the useful idea here is to pay attention to a subject's surroundings. A shadow can be as important to a composition as the object casting it. You do not need an Antarctic expedition to try that observation: a building beside water, a tree across snow or a rock on a beach can all create a second shape worth noticing.

A title borrowed from mapping changes the way we look

The title Mercators Projection invites viewers to think about division, surfaces and the organisation of space. Burdeny’s photograph is still an image of an iceberg, not a map or a literal illustration of how a cartographic projection works. The connection is suggestive: the meeting of strong horizontal and vertical features makes a natural scene feel unusually ordered.

Compare that overall geometry with the smaller irregularities. The water has texture, the ice has an uneven surface, and the boundaries are not the flawless lines of a diagram. Those details keep the composition from becoming merely abstract. The photograph gains much of its interest from the tension between a clear arrangement and the material that refuses to be perfectly regular.

The photograph turns one view of a three-dimensional iceberg into a remarkably organised flat composition. Its visible face tells us little about the full underwater shape, yet offers plenty to examine above the surface: edges, shadows, texture and the meeting of colour fields. Burdeny’s named work gives those choices a particular author and moment. Return from the overall symmetry to the smaller irregularities and the ice becomes tangible again.

An Alpine Mountain Coaster Ride: The Track and the View

A shining metal track curves through green Alpine slopes, with mountains filling the view ahead. Brice Milleson's Switzerland Mountain Coaster video makes this short ride feel like a very good reason to look up from an itinerary.

The location is the Oeschinensee summer toboggan run above Kandersteg, in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland. In his original upload, Milleson says he filmed the ride during a 2013 trip. The video was published in February 2015, before it appeared in this site's archive.

A summer slide with an Alpine backdrop

The photograph captures the ride's main attraction beautifully. The track leads your eye around the hillside, while grass, trees and distant peaks provide layer after layer of scenery. The foreground feels fast; the mountains seem almost still.

This is a summer toboggan attraction. The snowy peaks in the background should not be mistaken for a promise that the ride operates through winter. If you are planning a visit around the video, search for Oeschinensee or Kandersteg: “a slide in the Swiss Alps” can lead to several entirely different attractions.

What to check before you ride

The operator's current ride information gives the practical details below. Check it again for your travel date, because opening arrangements and conditions can change.

Location and length: the 750-metre run is beside the Oeschinensee gondola's upper station.
Weather: it is a summer attraction and closes in wet conditions.
Children: children aged three and older can ride with an adult; solo riding starts at eight, subject to the operator's supervision conditions.
Tickets: ride tickets are sold at the machine on site. Check gondola arrangements separately.
On the track: follow staff instructions, use the brake lever and keep both hands on the controls. The operator prohibits filming with phones or similar devices during the ride.

That last point is particularly relevant to a visit inspired by an old point-of-view film. Watching the clip is a lovely introduction; follow today's instructions when it is your turn.

Leave room for the landscape

Before setting off, decide what you want the day to include: the ride, time beside the lake, a meal or a longer walk. Those choices affect how much time to allow beyond the few minutes shown in a video. Check the return gondola time before committing to another activity, and choose walking routes from current local information.

The bends turn the landscape into part of the ride

A fixed camera position makes the track the organising line of this film. As it curves, the background changes from open slope to a different stretch of mountain scenery. The result is more than a record of speed: the route continually reveals and conceals parts of the view. Watch the horizon as well as the track to see how the turns create that effect.

The rider’s viewpoint also leaves information outside the frame. It does not show the full operating procedure, the spacing of every other rider or the instructions given before departure. The short film should therefore be enjoyed as one recorded ride rather than used to infer current rules or a guaranteed operating speed.

Give the ride a defined place within the day before adding the lake or a longer walk. The few minutes in the video do not include the approach, waiting, other activities or the return journey. Check the operator's current arrangements for each part and decide which matters most if time or weather changes. A short ride followed by an unhurried view can be a complete outing. The mountains continue beyond the end of the track, and leaving room to enjoy them helps the visit feel like more than an attempt to repeat a popular clip.

Figure Skating on an Alpine Lake: Bradley Friesen’s Mountain Film

The person behind the distant figure

In its contemporary feature, Upworthy spoke with Friesen about the outing. Its account describes Lazzarotto returning to skating after four years away, with Friesen flying her into the mountains. That gives the film a warmer human story than the idea of an anonymous athlete performing a stunt. Read the 2016 interview and photo feature.

The lake is in British Columbia's coastal mountains. It is better to keep that clear regional description than turn the film into directions to an unverified public skating destination. The original upload does not present a named, managed rink.

Why the image feels so spacious

Look at the archive still above. The skater occupies only a small part of the frame, leaving the mountains and their reflection to describe the setting. The dark surface makes the figure readable without filling the foreground with detail.

Then notice the pale markings on the ice. They interrupt the reflection, reminding us that this is a textured frozen surface. The photograph contains two different kinds of line: the large mountain outlines and the much smaller marks around the skater. That difference in scale is a big part of its appeal.

A useful idea for your own winter photographs is to try one wider frame before moving closer. A person does not always need to fill the picture to become its focal point. A little space can tell us much more about where the moment happened.

Inspiration for a skating day of your own

A smooth-looking lake in a film does not establish safe ice conditions. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources explains that ice strength varies and cannot be judged from appearance alone. Read its ice-safety guidance.

If this video makes you want to lace up your skates, start with a managed outdoor rink or a locally approved skating area and check its current status. You can enjoy fresh air, movement and a beautiful winter setting without needing to reproduce a remote helicopter outing.

The small figure gives the mountain scene its scale

The skater’s movement is important partly because she occupies such a small part of the wider landscape. A turn or a glide provides a human measure against the mountains and the dark surface below. Without that figure, the same view could be read as a still landscape; with her, distance and space become part of a performance.

Reflections introduce a second visual structure. The mountains appear both above and below the shoreline, while the moving skater interrupts that apparent symmetry. Compare the broad view with moments when the figure becomes more prominent. The film shifts between an individual action and the much larger setting that contains it.

Friesen's film brings together an individual return to skating and a carefully chosen mountain setting. The broad reflection makes Lazzarotto's movement part of a much larger composition, while the interview gives that distant figure a name and a personal history. Read the two together rather than reducing the scene to an anonymous stunt. Its creative value is the relationship between a person, a frozen surface and the landscape around them. For an outing of your own, the venue's current suitability still needs to be established independently; a beautiful reflection cannot assess natural ice.

From ground level, a snowshoe print is just a mark left behind. Seen from above, thousands of carefully placed prints can become a star, a snowflake or an intricate web of geometry. That change of perspective is at the heart of Simon Beck's snow art.

Great Big Story's short film Art at Altitude: Snow Murals in the Mountains, published in February 2016, introduces the artist and the extraordinary scale of his work. The finished design is made by walking across snow, with snowshoes doing the drawing.

How do you draw something too big to see at once?

Beck's background in mapmaking and orienteering helps explain his method. A drawing starts with measurements: directions, paced distances and a framework of lines. In his 2025 Art2Life interview, he discusses working with a compass and treating the process like mapmaking in reverse — transferring an idea onto the ground.

The early layout needs concentration. Once the main geometry is established, repeated walking fills parts of the pattern. Snow depth and condition affect how much effort that takes, so “20 miles every day” is too rigid a description of a practice shaped by individual designs and weather.

The photograph is part of the work

A higher viewpoint brings the separate tracks together into a readable whole. Light matters, too: low sun can cast shadows in the compressed snow and make the pattern easier to distinguish. Beck discusses those changing shadows and the need to photograph a drawing before fresh snow or other disturbance erases it in the same interview.

That makes this an unusual kind of artwork to encounter. A walker can be standing inside a small part of a design while someone looking from above sees the complete arrangement. Both people are looking at the same snow, but they are reading it at different scales.

An idea that kept growing

In a 2023 interview with Nice News, Beck recalled making his first snow drawing for fun in 2004 near his home at Les Arcs in France. He also described creating drawings in sand. The materials change, but the need to work within a temporary surface remains.

Part of the pleasure is knowing that the next snowfall can make the same place available for a different drawing. The photograph preserves one arrangement; the ground does not have to keep it forever.

Try a small version of the idea

You do not need a mountainside to explore patterns. In a permitted, level area of snow on solid ground, sketch a simple design first: a star, a spiral or your initials. Think about where you will enter and leave so your approach does not cross the part you want to photograph.

Choose a safe viewpoint already available to you, such as a window overlooking a garden. Compare the close view with the wider one. Which lines stay visible, and which disappear? It is a cheerful exercise in seeing, even if the result lasts only until the next set of footprints.

A drawing has a route as well as an outline

On paper, you can lift a pencil and begin a fresh line elsewhere. On a snowfield, moving to the next part of the drawing can itself leave marks. That difference makes the approach, the order of work and the passage between sections part of the design problem.

Watch the film with that question in mind. Try to distinguish establishing a line from repeatedly filling an area. A finished aerial view combines those actions into one pattern, while the work-in-progress footage makes their different roles easier to understand.

Counted steps are a measure of work, not a universal schedule

Beck estimated around 5,000 steps in an hour and as many as 40,000 for his largest projects in the account accompanying this feature. Imagine those steps as repeated lines in a drawing: some establish the boundaries, while others gradually fill a shape. Snow conditions and the design change the work involved. The figures convey the effort of particular projects, rather than a fixed daily distance or a schedule shared by every drawing.

The meaningful comparison is between the planned geometry and the physical effort needed to make it visible. One line may define an important boundary with relatively few passes, while a filled area requires repeated coverage. A count alone does not describe that difference.

Try the planning exercise before going outside

Draw a simple star or spiral on paper, mark an entrance and an exit, and trace a continuous route through the design. Decide which areas should remain untouched. If reaching one section forces you across an empty area, revise the route before attempting a small version on permitted, level ground.

Then choose the viewpoint from which the result will be read. A design seen from a nearby window may need broader lines than a sketch viewed close up. This exercise borrows the spatial thinking in Beck’s work without requiring a mountain site or reproducing the scale of a filmed project.

The Gulmarg Snow Leopard Encounter: What the Trip Account Clarified

A shape in the snow suddenly became a very memorable part of a ski day in Gulmarg. The 2016 footage shows an unexpected encounter with a snow leopard, but the account from the trip organiser is more revealing than the “skiers chased by a big cat” headlines.

The original Vimeo upload credits Owen Lansbury with filming the encounter and identifies David Marchi as the American guide leading Bill's Trips' skiers in Gulmarg, Kashmir. It was uploaded in February 2016.

What the trip organiser clarified

In its 14 February account, Bill's Trips described Marchi mistaking the animal for a fallen log before coming very close to it. The organiser said the startled leopard turned towards the group, then ran away. It was not chasing the skiers, despite the impression some viewers took from the camera angle.

The account is also candid about its limits: its author was skiing with another group nearby and spoke with the guests afterwards. That is useful context when separating a participant's footage from a later summary of the event.

Was it definitely a snow leopard?

The organiser initially questioned the species because of the animal's colour. On 3 March 2016, it published a follow-up correction, reporting that local experts and a National Geographic biologist had reviewed the footage and identified a snow leopard.

Keeping both reports together gives the story a much clearer timeline. The early uncertainty was real, and the later clarification should travel with the video.

A coat made for disappearing into the landscape

Snow leopards' pale greyish fur is patterned with dark spots and rosettes. Against broken mountain terrain, that combination can make an animal's outline surprisingly difficult to pick out. Snow leopard calls and conservation status

Snow leopards do not produce the deep roar associated with some other big cats. They can make other vocal sounds, but describing this encounter as a “solid roar” adds an inaccurate flourish.

The species is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group also cautions that reliable global population estimates are lacking. Give a rare encounter room to end

The rewarding part of a wildlife sighting is seeing an animal in its own surroundings. Avoid following it for a closer picture, leave its escape route open and follow your guide's instructions. General wildlife-watching principles favour distance and minimal disturbance; an exciting video is no reason to engineer another encounter.

Camouflage is a relationship with the background

The animal’s coat is most revealing when considered together with the surrounding snow, exposed ground and uneven relief. Camouflage is not simply a matter of being white in winter. A broken pattern can make the boundary of an animal harder to distinguish within a similarly varied background. The moment of recognition becomes striking because a shape that seemed part of the scene is suddenly understood as a living animal.

That visual surprise should not be confused with evidence that the leopard was stalking the group. The organiser’s account and later clarification belong alongside the film, especially where viral captions supplied a more aggressive story. A brief encounter rarely reveals everything about what happened before the camera began recording.

The memorable moment is recognition: what looked like part of the broken mountain surface becomes a snow leopard. Watch for that change before adding a story about what the animal intended. Its movements and the organiser’s account offer a more grounded way into the encounter than a dramatic chase caption. The coat’s relationship with the surroundings is striking enough to hold your attention without an invented motive.

This is the third instalment of One of those days, published on Thovex’s official YouTube channel on 23 February 2016. His description identifies the filming location as La Clusaz, France, and presents it as the conclusion to the trilogy. You can watch the official film here.

The official upload gives this sequence a clear identity within Thovex's work: a named skier, a filming location and a place in a three-part series. That context helps when a short extract appears elsewhere without its beginning or ending. Return to the full film to see how the approaches, changes of scene and pacing fit together. The moment that looks most surprising in isolation may be even more effective after the sequence has prepared the viewer for it.

Why the viewpoint feels so immediate

Look at the foreground in the image. The skis give your eye a point of reference, while the approaching rock occupies the space where you expect an open slope. You can almost feel the change from bright snow to shadow before pressing play. That visual setup helps explain the appeal: the camera places the viewer inside the skier’s view of the terrain.

The original story’s question about whether it was “real” is too broad to settle from a thumbnail. The official upload establishes authorship and location; it does not document every production or editing decision. Tomi Rantanen’s Inari Aurora Time-Lapse: A Lake Beneath a Moving Sky

The boat stays still. The lake catches the colour. Above them, the northern lights seem to paint a new sky every few seconds. Tomi Rantanen’s Inari time-lapse is a lovely invitation to slow down, even though the film itself speeds nature up.

A collection of nights around Inari

Rantanen published his Inari northern lights film in February 2016. In the accompanying account, he says the material was recorded around Inari in Finnish Lapland, mostly during October 2015, across several periods of auroral activity. The finished film runs for about two and a half minutes.

The sequence brings together autumn skies recorded across repeated visits. It is the product of returning, observing and selecting enough material to build a film, rather than one camera left outdoors for a single night. That process gives the changing scenes continuity while allowing their light and weather to vary.

What a time-lapse changes

The creator also offers a useful reminder: auroras generally look less intensely coloured and move more slowly to the eye than they do in his time-lapse. Recording and presenting the scene compresses time and changes how we experience its brightness.

That does not take the pleasure out of watching. It lets you appreciate two things at once: a natural light display and a filmmaker’s way of showing its changing shapes. What helps you see the lights in Finnish Lapland?

The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s aurora guidance emphasises darkness, clear skies and a view away from bright lights. Northern Finland offers better opportunities than the south, but a promising location cannot clear the clouds or schedule an aurora.

Auroras can occur throughout the year; summer daylight makes them difficult to see. The institute highlights spring and autumn activity and notes that weather can make March and early April especially useful viewing periods in northern Finland. Those are planning clues, rather than a promise for a particular night.

A detail worth borrowing for your own photographs

In the image above, the boat gives the scene a human scale. The water repeats the colour overhead, linking foreground and sky. You can borrow that compositional idea with a shoreline, a tree or a small building, without trying to reproduce the exact brightness of a polished film. Leave enough space for the sky, then look for something simple that makes the place feel like a place.

The foreground gives the accelerated sky a steady anchor

The boat and lake provide continuity while the sky changes. Their relative stillness makes the aurora’s movement more legible, and the reflection brings some of that light into the lower half of the frame. The scene would feel different if the camera followed every change above: the fixed viewpoint lets viewers compare successive moments against the same foreground.

Compare the finished film's short running time with the creator's account of collecting material over several periods of auroral activity. The difference explains two choices: which nights and scenes were selected, and how quickly each sequence is played. A fixed boat or shoreline lets the viewer follow change within a shot, while a cut may introduce another occasion entirely. The result is a composed portrait of autumn skies around Inari, not one uninterrupted eight-hour recording. Knowing that makes the patient collecting of images part of the pleasure of watching.

For a photograph of your own, the useful idea is to choose a foreground before becoming absorbed by the sky. A shoreline, boat or distant tree line can give the eventual image a sense of place. The particular subject should be accessible from a suitable location; entering dark water margins or unknown ice is not required to borrow the compositional lesson.

Lake Superior Ice Stacking: Dawn LaPointe’s Duluth Shoreline Film

Lake Superior can sound like a cupboard full of glass when its ice starts moving. In Dawn M. LaPointe’s film from Duluth, thin plates gather along the shore in a shifting jumble of translucent edges. It is an absorbing winter scene, especially with the sound turned on.

Where the Lake Superior ice-stacking video was filmed

LaPointe, of Radiant Spirit Gallery, recorded the footage at Brighton Beach in Duluth, Minnesota, on 13 February 2016. Her original upload and filming notes describe sheets of lake ice moving toward the shoreline, breaking into plates and accumulating at the edge.

She had first noticed ice drawing away from shore at Canal Park. Anticipating what the moving sheets might do elsewhere, she headed to Brighton Beach. That choice makes the story more interesting: recognising movement on the lake helped her find a place to observe the next part of the process.

How the plates pile up

Wind can move floating ice across a lake. When sheets meet an obstruction such as the shore, the advancing ice can fracture, overlap and accumulate. LaPointe records sustained southwesterly winds before this particular event. The glass-like appearance comes from the thin, angular plates and the way light passes through their edges.

For a wider view of wind-driven movement, the National Weather Service documents a separate Lake Michigan event using a webcam and satellite imagery. Its account shows why the position of lake ice can change substantially within a day.

The familiar phrase “frozen waves” describes the impression, but ice stacking is the more useful name here. The sequence shows already-formed ice moving and breaking; it does not show waves suddenly freezing into place.

Is the footage sped up?

No: LaPointe explicitly states that the clips play at normal speed. The roughly two-minute film combines excerpts from about two hours of recording. It compresses the event by selecting moments, while preserving the speed within those moments.

That distinction is easy to miss when a natural process moves faster than expected. Listen for the changing rhythm as the plates meet. The sound adds a sense of weight and contact that a still photograph cannot provide.

Enjoy the view from stable ground

Moving shoreline ice is best appreciated from a secure viewing position on land. A pile of plates does not tell you whether the water beneath it is frozen solid, and its shape can change as more ice arrives. Resist climbing onto it for a closer photograph.

Listen for the separate stages of a moving ice sheet

The sound is part of what makes this sequence so absorbing. Instead of a single splash, the scene involves many small contacts as plates meet, shift and accumulate. Watching an edge while listening makes it easier to connect the visible movement with the breaking and scraping that accompany it. The resemblance to glass comes from both the appearance and the sound.

The account links the movement to wind acting on ice that had separated from the shore. Calling it an “ice tide” can obscure that explanation by suggesting an ordinary tidal cycle. The relevant story here is moving lake ice arriving at a constrained edge, where it cannot continue across the ground as an intact sheet.

Follow one translucent plate until it meets the growing accumulation, then shift attention to the pile as a whole. The first view reveals edges and small movements; the second shows the quantity of material arriving at a constrained shore. LaPointe's normal-speed excerpts make both scales available without turning the process into a time-lapse. The sound helps connect them, as many small contacts become a continuous sequence of breaking and scraping. That combination explains the film's appeal while leaving the active shoreline a place to observe from secure ground, rather than climb into for a similar perspective.
