Groomed Slope - A groomed slope is a term that refers to a type of slope terrain that is now smooth as a result of having recently being groomed.

Hard Packed - The term hard packed is a euphemism that is used in order to describe conditions that are icy, and hard packed conditions generally occur when there is no recent snowfall and the snow has been packed down tight.

Headwall - A headwall is a steep type of cliff, usually found at the uppermost part of what is known as a cirque.

Heli Skiing - Heli skiing is a discipline for skiing that involves helicopter transportation to one of the highest slopes of the mountain. Heli skiing is generally known for providing skiers and snowboarders with fresh tracks to ski on.

Herringbone - This is a skiing technique that has been named after the marks that are left behind by the skis when a skier happens to nudge in an upward direction through the snow.

Indie Grab - An indie grab is a term in the industry that describes grabbing your skis or your snowboard on the outside edge under the boot while you are in the process of executing a jump.

Jib - Jib or jibbing is a term that refers to a combination of tricks or to a single trick that is done while you are on skis or on a snowboard, generally done while you are at a terrain park although this is not actually a requirement.

Jump Training - This is a method involved in turning that involves jumping both of your skis into the air, and what this does is allows for you to make a much quicker change of direction. Jump turning is a method of turning that is typically used when you are dealing with more extreme types of terrain.

Kick Turning - This is an about face type of turn that is made while you are stationary. Kick turning is executed by lifting one of your skis and then reversing its direction before doing the same thing with the other ski.

Kicker - This is described as being the sharply angled end of your turn, which allows for you to gain a significant amount of height in the process.

Liftie - A liftie is the operator of a ski lift or gondola lift.

Mashed Potatoes - This is a euphemism or slang term that is used to refer to snow that is wet and heavy.

Milk Run - The milk run is the very first run of the day.

Moguls - Moguls are mounds of snow or bumps in the snow, and they come in a wide variety of different sizes depending on the difficulty of the slope.

About the Resort:

This great resort is tucked away into the Sierra National Forest. Extremely friendly towards beginners, but also well suited to professionals, this is one of the nicest ski resorts we’ve ever come across in this area. The atmosphere is very friendly and the management goes above and beyond to make sure you’re happy. The fees are also incredibly low considering the quality of the runs. It’s easy to see why so many people return here year after year.

What You Need to Know:

There are a total of 45 trails, and 11 lifts, which move quite a few people an hour. There is also a great ski lift that is more like a carpet that is ideal for children or those just learning to ski. These lifts can be found near the beginner areas, which we’ll go more into detail about below.

The onsite lodging is very reasonably priced and we highly recommend staying on site, especially if you plan on doing a lot of skiing. Many people actually end up renting a vacation home here, due to the high quality of this resort and it’s prime location in the heart of central California.

Tips for Beginners:

There is an entire area that is dedicated to beginners and we found it to be on the most beginner friendly resorts in the state. Although only 11% of the trails are intended for beginners, there are many places to learn how to ski and then safely test your skills. The ski carpet is a lot of fun in its own right, and everything is made very simple.

We found the instructors to be very knowledgeable and this is a great place to send kids for ski school, considering that the resort offers very low prices for students, and some great instructional programs. Adults will have plenty of chances to learn as well and lessons are offered throughout the day.

Crud - This is a type of snow that is characterized by possessing an uneven surface that typically encompasses some soft lumps of powder like snow as well as patches that are more icy or slippery in nature.

DIN Settings - Also known as Deutsche Industrie Normen, this is a scale that is used in order to insure that all ski bindings are capable of releasing under the same amount of force at every ski destination all over the world.

Dump - This is characterized as being an unusually heavy or unusually large snowfall.

Edge - An edge is a metal strip that can be found on the bottom sides of both skis and snowboards, and this metal strip is used for the purpose of carving.

Ego Bumps - Ego bumps are small and well spaced moguls that you will find on an intermediate slope. The purpose behind these ego pumps is to be generally much easier for beginners to ski than the moguls that you are going to find on the more difficult types of slopes.

Epic - This word is used to describe a day that is characterized by large amounts of snow or other types of conditions that make the day unforgettable or otherwise out of the norm.

Fall Line - The fall line is a line that a ball would follow if it were rolling down the entire length of the slope, or otherwise the fall line can be described as being the quickest method of getting down the mountain from top to bottom.

Figure Eight - Tandem skiers create a figure eight pattern when their tracks are viewed from above. The numerical eight appears when you view the tracks from above.

Figure Eleven - When a skier does not make any turns, the tracks that are left behind are known as a figure eleven.

First Tracks - When a skier happens to be the first person to ski a specific area in an area where the snow is fresh, this is known as first tracks. Another name for this same occurrence is freshies.

Freestyle Skiing - This is described as a skiing discipline that makes use of aerial acrobatics combined with downhill skiing techniques.

Gaper - This is a skier that stops frequently so that they can enjoy the view that they get from the top of the mountain.

Gondola - A gondola is a lift that is enclosed and that is suspended above the mountain using a cable, and used in order to transport the passengers down and up from the top to the bottom of the mountain and back again.

Grass Skiing - This is a discipline for all seasons that is done on grass using a specialized type of equipment.

One of the ways to get the most out of the ski season is to squeeze out every last snowflake by taking advantage of backcountry skiing and backcountry snowfields even as the spring season begins to rear its head. In an effort to get absolutely as many turns as we possibly can as we move further into the spring season, it is time for us to consider looking toward the other side of our favorite ski slope. It would be advantageous for you to look into the woods, where the trees are actually your friends during this time of year, because they spread their arms out over the snow and protect the sun from melting it. In the trees, the season's warm breezes aren't opening up zipper lines of grass and mud as would normally happen at this time of year on the more exposed groomed slopes.

If you ask any ski area manager, you are going to be told that warm daytime temperatures are easy to handle, but the scissors that cut up the snow cover is the warmer winds. Snowmaking is completely out of the question during this particular time of the year as well. In addition to being forced to contend with fickle temperatures, this particular expense simply cannot be gambled considering there are far less people on the mountain during this time of year and the payback may simply not be worth it.

But, if you do want to find snow then you should know that there is still snow that can be found. If you are local to a mountain range or even just a hilly area, then there is definitely going to be snowpack back around there someplace. It may be pretty well hidden, but if you whine long enough, someone at the local ski shop will take pity upon you and point you to a snowfield that is reachable. It may not be the good stuff, it may not be powder, but if you can slide around on it and turn on it, then you are going to appreciate it, enough said.

Backcountry skiing is a great way to take advantage of every single last snowflake. If there's still snow on the backcountry, under the canopy of trees, then why not hike up and experience everything that the spring snow has to offer you? Keep in mind that a lot of ski resorts are maintaining their snow well into the spring because of storms in March and April, and you may even be able to find powder in some places. Don't be afraid to call local resorts and lodges to find out about their snow. They'll be more than willing to tell you where the snow is and what places are worth checking out in comparison to which places are worth avoiding.

You are going to need to consider that you are dealing with more sunshine than usual, changing conditions in the snow, and temperatures that are generally warmer than before. These tips will work wonders in helping to make sure that your skiing season is enjoyable as well as safe well into the spring.

Here are some must-know skiing tips for the spring skiing season:

You should always make sure to wear sunscreen. This is absolutely a must when it comes to skiing during the spring season. When your skin has been completely covered up throughout the entire winter, the bring sun in the spring is capable of easily causing you to burn. Make sure that all of the uncovered parts of your face such as your nose and around your eyes and lips, are properly covered using the right kind of sunscreen protectant.

Make sure that you are consistently hydrated. During your spring skiing, temperatures are capable of rising and making sure that you are drinking enough water is going to be important. This is especially true when you are skiing at higher altitudes. Make sure that you are drinking enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Adjust your stance to accommodate the spring snow. When you are skiing in the spring snow, you should be skiing in a more solid nature by keeping your weight balanced and even on both of your feet. You may want to consider investing in a lesson so that you can learn how to perfect the process of skiing while on spring snow. This is going to teach you some of the things that you will be able to apply again every year during each spring season.

Make sure that you are wearing sunglasses or goggles. The bright sun is enough to call for solid eye protection, so make sure that you are wearing your ski goggles. Wearing athletic style sunglasses is also going to help to protect your eyes from the sun while ensuring that you can see well on the slopes.

Make sure that you are wearing the right gear. During the warmer temperatures in the spring, any skier is capable of overheating when wearing their winter gear. You are going to want to make sure that you have a fleece or lighter jacket to accommodate sunny days. On days where there might be rain, you may opt for a light and waterproof style jacket.

Tune your skis up for the spring. The spring snow can be really difficult and is likely going to be able to slow you down considerably. If you want your skiing to be significantly smoother then you should tune your skis up before the spring season begins.

Here is a skiing lexicon that will help prepare you for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season.

Alpine Skiing - Alpine skiing is a type of downhill skiing where both the toe and the heel of your ski boots are affixed to your skis.

Après Ski - This is the nightlife that follows a day full of skiing, such as going shopping, going drinking, listening to music or simply relaxing in a nice warm Jacuzzi.

Base - This is the average depth of the snow on the mountain, and it is also described as being the bottom of whatever mountain where the lodge is going to be located.

Basket - This is a round and generally flat type of disk that is located near the tip of the ski pole, and it is designed to keep the pole from sinking down too far into the snow.

Bowl Skiing - Bowl skiing is skiing when you are on wide and bowl shaped slopes that may or may not have trees.

Brain Bucket - This is another word for helmet.

Bunny Slope - The bunny slope is the area of the ski mountain that has a more gradual decline, and it is generally best indicated for beginner skiers that are just learning the basic skiing techniques.

Carve - Carving is the act of digging the edge of your ski or your snowboard into packed snow for the purpose of turning yourself while skiing or snowboarding.

Catching an Edge - When your ski or snowboard edge accidently digs down into the snow, this is referred to as catching an edge, and unfortunately it nearly always results in a fall or at least a near fall.

Cirque - This is a bowl-shape or an amphitheater that is sculpted out of the mountain terrain.

Cliff Hucking - This is described as being a move that experienced skiers do, or that overambitious beginners may do, as it involves skiers jumping directly off of a cliff while on their skis.

Corn - This is snow that is characterized by granules that are large like the size of a corn kernel, and this is especially common during the spring months.

Cross Country Skiing - This is described as any type of skiing on flat terrain with the use of self produced power and no extra help from the slopes. There are two different techniques for cross country skiing, which are skating skiing and classic or striding skiing. Cross country skiing is much more aerobic in nature than alpine skiing and it requires narrower skis and lighter boots in general.

Shaped Skis - These are relatively new and fairly improved skis that are characterized as having some type of an hourglass shape, and they are supposedly designed with the purpose of easier turning in mind.

Schuss - This means to ski straight down the slope without doing any kind of turning.

Six Pack - This is a chair lift that is characterized as being able to carry six people all at once.

Ski In - Ski Out - This is lodging that is on the slopes or near the slopes, and it allows skiers to ski right in or right out of their accommodations. Definition for this one is going to vary based on the resort, so call ahead to make sure that you know what you are contending with before you book a Ski In/Ski Out accommodation.

Snowboarding - Snowboarding is characterized by skiing with only a single ski, which is shorter and wider and involves fixing both feet in a single position that is similar in nature to skateboarding or surfing.

Snow Plough - This is a maneuver for breaking that involves moving the tips of the skis together to form a triangular shape, and it is also referred to as a wedge shape or a pizza shape.

Snorkeling - When the powder runs up your body, blurring your vision while you are skiing or snowboarding, this is known as snorkeling.

Stem Christie - This is a basic turn that begins with you creating a wedge and then is completed when you skid on both of your uphill ski edges until your skis have become parallel.

Telemark Skiing - This is a type of discipline for skiing where your heel is not fixed to your ski. It requires a completely different type of technique in comparison to other types of skiing such as cross country and alpine skiing for example.

Terrain Park - This is an area that is maintained with a variety of different half pipes, jumps, rails and other specific obstacles for skiers and snowboarders to perform tricks on.

Traversing - This is a technique that involves moving yourself horizontally across a ski slope so that you can gain or lose only a minimal amount of actual elevation in the process.

Unweighting - This is the process of taking weight off of your ski, typically just prior to making or taking a turn.

Vertical Drop - This is described as being the vertical distance from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain, or the top of the slope to the bottom of the slope.

Whiteout - This is described as a limited amount of visibility as a result of fog, flat light or snow conditions.

X-C - This is an abbreviation for cross country skiing.

Traversing is all about riding diagonally across a slope, taking yourself slowly from one of the slope's sides to the other while descending. You can traverse in two different ways, heel side or toe side depending on the position that you are making and depending on which board edge you end up using.

Step #1 - When you are traversing using the toe edge of your snowboard, it is going to be vitally important for you to look in the direction that you actually want to go in. You should be spreading your arms out in order to help to maintain your balance as you traverse down the slope.

Step #2 - Next, what you are going to want to do is to turn your head as well as your upper body in the direction that you are wishing to travel to. Make sure that you are shifting more of your weight onto your leading foot, and then you should be moving them together using your other foot.

Step #3 - Next what you are going to want to do is to return the snowboard into its original position, which should be across the slope's fall line. Now you should prepare to move in the direction of the other side of the slope. Once again, it is going to be vitally important for you to look in the direction that you actually want to go in. And once again, you should be taking care to spread your arms out so that you can maintain your balance as you traverse down the slope.

Step #4 - Now just like in the second step of this instruction, what you are going to want to do next is to turn your head as well as your upper body in the direction that you are wanting to travel to. You should be shifting more of your weight onto your leading foot, and you should be moving together using your other foot as well.

Mastering the skills and techniques necessary for traversing is going to help you have better speed over your control as well as your direction. Soon you are going to be capable of controlling both edges, and therefore you will be able to make a controlled stop whenever it is necessary. You are going to want to make sure that you are completely comfortable in doing traverses on both the heel side and the toe side before you move on to any other snowboard exercises. This is a skill that is going to serve as a solid building block for improving your capabilities in other techniques and skills as well.
