This type of snowboard has a tip and a tail that are identical, making it possible for the board to be ridden in both directions in a similar fashion.

Variable Flex - When the tip, the tail and the middle of a snowboard each have different amounts or degrees of flex. This term also describes varying the overall amount of flex on a snowboard from the tip of the board, to the middle of the board and then the tail of the board.

Variable Radius - This is a term that is used to describe a side cut type of design that is incorporating a change in the radius size all along the length of the snowboard. This also explains the process of adjusting a side cut design for the purpose of enhancing the board's characteristics while turning.

Vertical - This is a term that is used to describe the very top portion of a vertical wall within a half pipe, which makes it possible for a boarder to fly right up into the air rather than in or out of the pipe.

Vertically Laminated Wood Core - This is a term that is used to describe what is essentially the industry standard when it comes to wood core for snowboards. It involves strips of wood that range in thickness from 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch which are bonded together in a side by side manner and have joints running vertically. What this allows for is different types of woods to be used in each of the cores in order to optimize the performance characteristics for the snowboard.

Vultures - This is a term that is used to describe crowds that gather at or near sections within a competition that are particularly dangerous.

Waist - This is a term that is used to describe the width measurement that is taken at the very narrowest part of the snowboard, which is close to the middle of the entire board's length.

Wall - This is a term that is used to describe any bank that is at least 90 degrees or more.

Wet Cat - This is a term that is used to describe the signature move by Todd Richard. This move entails an inverted aerial with the rider performing a 540 degree rotation while flipping. Then, there is an additional 360 rotation on the ground which is thrown in so that the complete rotation is 900 degrees total.

Wipeout - This is a term that is used to describe a crash of any sort while snowboarding.

Wood Core - This is a term that is used to describe the various types of wood that are used in order to provide the shape and the thickness for a snowboard.

Zonk - This is a term that is used to describe hitting a wall.

About the Resort:

The resort is named after a coal-mining town that disappeared in the 1900's. This luxury resort offers a truly authentic western atmosphere and hospitality, whose small town roots leave the atmosphere anything but pretentious. Guests will be pleased with the opportunities to take in the sights of the mountains and Glenwood Village's offerings. The mountain offers many different levels of skiing possibilities to take advantage of. This will ensure that anyone of any experience level will enjoy themselves in some way or another. Glenwood Springs is also home to the largest hot spring pool of the world at the Fairy Caves. There is plenty in the Glenwood Springs area to do for recreation and for a variety of ethnic offerings, so you will never be bored.

What You Need to Know:

The Sunlight Mountain Resort covers more than 470 Acres of prime mountain real estate, offering lush forested areas and beautiful scenery from one end to the other. Over the course of the year, the mountain receives as many as 250 inches of fresh snow, with nice powders that last over the span of a few days or more. Only about 10 percent of the snow is artificially produced. The peak reaches nearly 9900 feet, with an overall vertical elevation of 2010 feet. Recently new trails were built for the enjoyment of a new black diamond run that goes by the name of Casanova Glade, as well as a new double black diamond run in the extreme area. This expands the resort's trail offering to a glorious 68 trails, with 20 percent green circle, 55 percent blue square, 20 percent black diamond and 5 percent double black diamond. The longest trail in the run is over thirteen thousand feet from end to end, and the Heathen Extreme is by far the most difficult.

Tips for Beginners:

The school at the Sunset Mountain Resort offers snowboarding and skiing instruction for all ages and all levels of experience. You can plan to enjoy a much fuller experience at the Sunset Mountain Resort, as our qualified instructors take you out and teach you the finer points of the sports that you most want to learn. There are hundreds of acres of greens to be taken advantage of by skiers, so the beginner will not be at a loss for excellent chances to learn the sport. There are 13~14 of the beginners green circle courses.

During the snow season, it is especially important to keep your snowboard in top shape. However, you should be maintaining your snowboard all year long if you want to get the most out of it when the slopes are covered in fresh powder. Here are a few quick and vital tips that will help you keep your snowboard maintained so that it is ready to perform whenever you are.

1 - Right after every snowboarding session, you need to make sure to take the time to address any nicks or scratches on your board as quickly as possible. This is going to prevent you from getting any more damage on your snowboard, and it will also allow you to drastically increase the life span of your board. Repair kits are not very expensive, and you can usually pick them up either online or through your local snowboarding shop.

2 - Whenever it is possible for you to do so, take the time to sharpen the edges on your snowboard. Sharp edges on your snowboard will allow you to turn on a dime, and will allow you to be ready to handle any and all conditions, no matter how challenging. You can pick up a sharpening tool specifically designed for your snowboard at a board shop, or you can consult a professional to have the work done for you.

3 - If you want to clean off old wax and resurface your board before the snow season begins, heat your board up to get all the old wax off. You should put the time and effort necessary into refinishing your board in often. If your board is feeling sluggish, you should aim for hot waxing. If on the other hand you are looking for a general wax, could waxing can be used before each shred session. Waxing will make your snowboard a lot more effective on the snow, protecting the board from the friction that is generated when it makes contact with the snow.

4 - Make sure that you bring a towel with you each and every time that you snowboard. When you finish out your snowboarding session, you should make sure to wipe down your board completely as well as your bindings so that you can prevent any water damage, greatly extending the life of your snowboard in the process. If you keep your board dry over time, then it will last a whole lot longer than if you were never going to wipe it down.

These simple tips do not take a lot of time or effort, but they work wonders when it comes to maintaining the quality of your snowboard not only for the current snow season, but many snow seasons to come. Maintaining your board is a lot more cost effective than replacing your board every year, and does not take a lot of effort, but produces excellent results.

One of the most important factors in ensuring that you enjoy your time spend on the slopes is to have comfortable feet. Before you rent snowboard boots or buy your own, you need to make sure that they are fitting you properly. The difficulty here is practically non existent, making it vital that you ensure that your snowboard boots fit you properly before you hit the slopes for the first time.

First and foremost, you need to try the boots on. Just like when it comes to street shoes, snowboarding boots are capable of coming in a myriad of different widths, and so they fit different foot shapes in different ways. While you are wearing your typical snowboarding socks, you should try on a number of different pairs of snowboarding boots in order to determine what kind of snowboarding boots is going to best meet your needs. The boots that you choose should be relatively snug, and the front of your toes should just be barely brushing the front of the boot as you try it on.

Next what you are going to want to do is to lace them up properly. You should lace your snowboarding boots up tightly, and they should feel comfortable completely without any odd pressure points or hot spots. Your heel and your ankle should be completely held in place and they should be secure. There should be no front to back movement or lift at all if your boots are properly fitted and properly laced up.

Third, you are going to want to stand up and flex forward in order to determine that the boot that the snowboarding boots offer is appropriate for your needs. The boot offering the proper level of flex should be offering a little bit of resistance, but it should not be offering so much resistance that your movement is being prevented or restricted in any way.

Now, from a seated position you are going to want to raise your foot up, flexing your ankle like you are pushing down on the gas pedal of your car. If you cannot effectively do this, then your boot is too stiff. A boot that is too stiff is going to severely impede your personal progress on the slopes. If this is the case, you need to look for something that is softer.

Take a stroll around the rental shop or store to make sure that the snowboarding boot feels completely comfortable. If your day is going great but your boots are painful or fitting improperly, you could completely ruin your day. In other words, what you need to do is to take the time and put the effort forth to make sure that your boots are fitting properly for an all around good time. You will be glad that you put forth the effort when you have the best ride of your life.

Whether you already ski and are looking to take it to the next level, or you are completely new, there are a few things that you need to know ahead of time. As an aside, one of the most important things to cover before we move into tips about technique is that learning to balance with your board is the most important thing you can do. Many skateboarders feel that they’ll be able to do this without any problems, but the center of gravity is entirely different on a board and it’s really nothing like skateboarding at all.

In order to find your balance on your board, you’re going to need to make sure that it fits you correctly. Snowboards come in many different shapes and sizes and although you may be drawn to one that has flashier graphics, it is important to focus on buying one that will actually fit you. We highly recommend visiting a ski shop for a personal fitting since this can help remove a lot of confusion and you’ll end up with a board that is perfect for your height and weight.

Kids that will be starting in snowboarding really need to have the appropriate size board and even though they’ll be growing, it is just safer to get them the one they need right now, instead of trying to make them “grow” into one later on. They’ll have better luck and they’ll be a lot safer as well.

Next, you’ll need to get a good set of bindings that will work for you, not against you, and your board. Again, a ski shop can help you get fitted properly with the right kind of bindings. We highly recommend breakaway bindings when you are first starting out to reduce the risk of broken limbs. You’ll be literally attached to that board and it’s just a lot safer to roll away from the board when you fall.

Once you get set up with the right equipment, it’s time to learn some basics. If you can learn from a professional – that’s great. It will make it a lot easier to progress quickly and you’ll be getting tips you can really use. If you don’t have one in your area, we recommend getting a few DVDs at first and watching them a few times before you go out. Remember, you’ll be using your front leg to steer the board, not your back leg. This does affect your balance, like we mentioned above and you’ll need to find that center in order to stay upright and moving forward.

Don’t rush for the halfpipe when you first start out, unless the idea of a trip to the hospital sounds fun. Go for easy hills and build up your skills before you take it to the next level. Learning your balance is really the key and once you’ve got that down, you’ll be able to add in new techniques.

About the Resort:

This resort is located on what many believe to be the prettiest mountains in the world, Mount Shasta. This means that you’ll have access to some of the best skiing in the region, and more than enough room to test your skills. Whether you are a rank beginner or a seasoned pro, there is more than enough to do here to keep you busy. We found the resort to be definitely one of the nicest we have ever visited and look forward to returning soon.

What You Need to Know:

The season here opens a bit late, with the opening day on December 1st. However, it does run through the 9th of April, so you should have more than enough time to get in at least one trip to the resort in this period of time. There are a total of eight lifts, and even though the resort is very popular, we didn’t find that it was overcrowded, even during peak season. There are 31 trails here, spread out over 425 acres, and there are also some great terrain parks and halfpipes for snowboarders.

This resort is very open to snowboarding and you can even take lessons while you’re here. The terrain parks are a great place to start for beginners and all of the trails are patrolled on a regular basis for safety. Overall, this is easily one of the best resorts for skiing or snowboarding in the area.

Tips for Beginners:

Although most of the trails are for intermediate skiers, there are still plenty that are dedicated to beginners. We found them to be quite gentle in slope and they offer a great way to learn without being scared. Lessons are scheduled regularly throughout the day and the prices are very reasonable.

There are some terrific programs in place for children that want to learn how to ski and the resort offers cut rates as well as free ski passes for students, making it a great place to learn, no matter how old you are.

Here is a guide to treating snowboarding injuries and what you need to know about staying safe on the slopes.

- * Treating Snowboarding Sprains:

If you have sprained your ankle, your wrist or your knee, the first step is a process known as RICE. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This is the safest as well as the easiest way for you to heal an injury. It is vitally important that you follow all of these steps as swelling is capable of causing loss of motion as well as pain, limiting the use of your muscle. Limiting the use of your muscle will result in a weakening, a shortening and a delayed healing of whatever limb has been injured. After you follow through with RICE, you should visit your family physician for proper diagnosis of the sustained injury.

R: Rest - you should spend at least between 24 and 48 hours resting the sprained limb following the injury.

I: Ice - The ice should be used in order to reduce the swelling and the pain, and it should only be applied for between 10 minutes and 15 minutes at a time. If you do not have any ice then you should use something else that is frozen such as a bag of frozen vegetables. You should never apply heat, because heat increases rather than decreases the swelling involved in the injury.

C: Compression - There are a number of different ways that you can achieve compression. You can single wrap or double wrap an elasticated tubular bandage such as Tubigrip, or wear a crepe bandage or an elasoplast strap depending on your needs and what you have available at the time of the injury.

E: Elevation - You need to elevate the limb that has been sprained so that it is horizontal, allowing for swelling as well as discomfort to be reduced.

- * Prevention of Injuries while Snowboarding

You can prevent snowboarding injuries by following safety precautions and wearing the right gear. You should absolutely be wearing a helmet, the proper boots and any other protective gear that you can get your hands on in order to make your injuries less dangerous. You should also take the time to learn how to fall, as falling properly can save your life when you have a particularly nasty tumble on the slopes. You need to be strong, sturdy and healthy enough to be on the slopes for the best results, so make sure to train before hand, getting yourself in good shape by taking a fitness program and snowboarding lessons to make sure that you are prepared. You should also have your fitness instructor fit your gear for you, ensuring that you have the right gear in the right fit for the best possible results.

Website: http://www.skihomewood.com/

About the Resort:

This is an ideal place for families and for those that are interested in skiing, but are looking for a beginner friendly environment. Homewood has been ranked in the highest ski resorts in the country on a consistent basis by past visitors and after one trip, you'll see why it is so popular. One of the best features of this mountain is the fact that it is completely protected from high winds, so you can ski in relative comfort all season long.

What You Need to Know:

There are 60 trails at Homewood and two terrain parks to test your skills. Snowboarders are welcome here and the staff even provides lessons for beginning snowboarders. The resort covers more than 1200 acres and everything is well spaced out without being too far apart. There are seven lifts and it's rare to end up waiting in line here.

The management keeps the trails well groomed and they have done a great job improving the mountain. More plans are in the works for future renovations, and it is easy to see why so many people return to this resort again and again. It's by far one of the nicest we've come across and they've done a good job of combining a down home atmosphere with some serious ski opportunities.

Tips for Beginners:

Don't let the fact that only 15% of the trails here are meant for beginners fool you, this is a very good place to learn how to ski. The instructors are some of the best in the industry and they are very good at helping you with the basics and learning some very solid technique that will provide you with a great foundation for future use.

The lesson rates are very reasonable and they've done a great job of providing some low cost packages that include lift tickets, ski rentals and the cost of lessons. We highly recommend checking out the terrain parks for some great snowboarding lessons and for a lot of fun.

They have been designed, developed and built in order to allow a woman skier to tackle everything from groomers to moguls and beyond. If you are looking for the top skis for women for the 2008 and 2009 ski season, look no further than the reviews below.

Women's Nordica Skis -

Nordica is known for putting out a really outstanding line up when it comes to women's skis. The only changes to this year's skis are their graphics, but you can rest assured that these skis absolutely do not disappoint. The graphics on the Olympia line are especially pleasing this year.

Women's Salomon Skis -

If you are working on improving your skiing and you prefer groomers above all else, then the Salomon's Topaz line is probably going to be a good choice for you. This ski won't race you down the mountain, but it is a fairly forgiving carver nonetheless. If you are a more advanced skier, you may consider the Opal by Salomon, which is an excellent performer, light and nimble with a smooth and stable ride and tons of fun.

Women's Volkl Skis -

The Women's line of Volkl skis is the kind of line that you put on, and you find yourself in love immediately. The Volkl Aurora is especially popular as the kind of ski you can simply fall head over heels for. Another excellent ski in this line is the Fuego, which was introduced last year and is excellent if speed is your primary concern on the slopes this year.

Women's Atomic Skis -

The graphics aren't that great on the Women's line of Atomic Skis, but the performance is a completely different story. If you are looking for a high performance ski this season and do not mind uninspiring graphics, this may be the line of skis that you have been looking for, for the 2008 and 2009 ski season.

Women's Hart Skis -

The Hart Company is an old-line ski company that is working to come back. The skis that they are bringing out for this year's ski season are definitely quite impressive. They have taken the time to perform the necessary research, soliciting input from women skiers and holding focus groups to make sure that they are releasing the right kinds of skis. All of this input was incorporated into their recent designs. The Desire and the Beat are two excellent selections when it comes to women's skis for the upcoming season. The Desire is an excellent carver in packed and groomed snow, offering an excellent edge grip, stability and flex. The Beat is intended for skiers with more advanced knowledge of the slopes, and offers terrific handling both on the front side of the mountain and the back as well. Both skis are snappy and energetic and provide the turning ability you need without any instability.
