Powder Mountain is fast becoming the primo destination for snowkite enthusiasts. Last year, it was the first mountain resort in the US to offer identify an exclusive snowkiting area and to offer a snowkite only pass. This year, Best Kiteboards is establishing the Best Snowkite Center at Powder Mountain and will offer lessons and demos at the resort.

All the action takes place just south of the top of the Sunrise Poma lift, in an area known as “The Towers” in the Hidden Lake area of Powder Mountain, which sits at an elevation of about 9,000 ft. The viewing area is wide and open, so folks can cruise on over and take a break from skiing or riding to watch all the action, grab a bratwurst and enjoy the incredible backdrop of the entire Wasatch Range and Great Salt Lake. For non-skiers there will be a groomed trail from the Hidden Lake Lodge parking lot.

Drift is dedicated solely to the dynamic sport of snowkiting. The diverse aspects of the sport attract all sorts of interesting people. Freestyle, big air, backcountry exploration and the pure Zen of cruising over untracked powder inspired us and has changed our lives.

Our mission at Drift is to spread the virus of snowkiting to the world. We want to infect everyone—from the interested observer to the seasoned snowkite professional. We will keep you informed and excited with each print issue by staying current with the evolution of the sport while helping to grow and guide it toward the future.

This website is the compliment to the digital edition of Drift Snowkite Magazine and will be updated more regularly than the magazine. You will notice some content is shared between the magazine and website, but there will be news and stories online that you won’t find in print and some features and photos that are only available in the magazine. Most of the time you will find that the two editions work together to provide more of a good thing… snowkiting!

It has long been vision of ABoards team to develop a board that could be truly called “2 in 1 board” fitting equally well for 2 winter sports - snowkiting and snowboarding. After continuous development work successful result was achieved allowing to have a single board for both: snowkite and snowboarding holidays.

Tests have shown that ABoards 2009 kite+snowboard suits well not only advanced riders but also beginners and intermediates. Beginners will enjoy the board when making first steps in snowkiting or relaxingly cruising down the slopes of snowboard resorts. Rippers will find it equally great in snowboard parks without a kite or when performing freestyle tricks with a kite in the mountain wilderness.

The new board has balanced flex to ensure good pop and pleasant landings, however in central part of the board along both edges there are special stringers embedded into the core so that the board can keep the grip on the edge at higher speeds and loads while riding with kite. The board has special base cover to withstand high loads. Top sheet is from new type of glossy material to ensure excellent look and durability.

All boards have transparent technology window on top where core is visible. Core is mixed type wood and stringers. Waist parameters: 147cm (252mm), 155cm (258mm), 158cm (264mm). Stance width 52-68cm.

Highlights:

True 2 in 1 winter board
Tuned for kitesnow & snowboarding
Twintip with centered waist
100% strong wood core
All zones snow riding

The Juneau Icefield, the fifth largest icefield in North America, is a example of interconnected highland glaciers in the Alaska-Canada Boundary Range. Situated in very close proximity north and east of Alaska’s capital city of Juneau, the icefield lies at 60° N. latitude.

Comprising a rock and ice area of 5000 square miles, the icefield is punctuated by bedrock islands (nunataks) and spectacular subsidiary mountain ranges. It has 38 out-flowing trunk glaciers, the terminus of which reach low elevations at or near sea level. The most significant of these are the Mendendhall, Taku, Talsekwe, and Llewellyn Glaciers. The icefield, like many of its glaciers, reached its maximum glaciation point around 1700 and has been decreasing in size since. Of the icefield’s 19 notable glaciers, the Taku Glacier is the only one presently advancing. Dense rain forest and forbidding cliffs, with deep gorges and fiords, rim the coastal edge of the icefield.

Research has pin-pointed the deepest temperate glacier known today, revealing ice depths in excess of 4000 feet (1240 meters). These great depths are in areas which were glacier-free 5000 years ago, but now are ice covered fiords extending through the heart of a vast glacierized landscape.
