Nice Article in the Wall Street Journal online about the revenue growth for Snowkite and Kite Schools, get it going by combining both for a full year coverage in providing lessons.

“Thanks to those students, the 35-year-old says he expects to take in $200,000 in revenue this year from snow and water lessons, up from $150,000 in 2009 and $115,000 in 2008. For snow-kiting, students pay $750 to $1,300 for a three- to five-day trip that includes lessons, lodging and meals.

“If you only do a sport [like kite-surfing] half of the year, by the time you get the hang of it, there’s nowhere to do it,” says Mr. Kafka. That leads those students to snow-kiting, the winter version of kite-surfing, he says.”

This kite skiing Event presents a dazzling show full of colour. The first “Freestyle Attraction” came to life in 1991 through the initiative of Concept Air Kites. In 2010, the “Freestyle Attraction” will host the 30th WISSA (World Ice and Snow Sailing Association) World Sailing Championships on Ice and is busy planning festivities and competitions which will take place over a period of 10 days.

The Event takes place at La Baie des Ha Ha! on the Saguenay River. The geomorphology of the Saguenay Fjord in Quebec, Canada is a unique place in North America for kite skiing in winter. The sliding surface is exceptional and the wind, intensified by the fjord, is virtually always blowing. It is not surprising that the City of Saguenay is home to the largest club of wind sports activities in Canada!
The Events takes place at St-Gédéon on the ”Lac St-Jean” lake.

The base for this one-of-a-kind endurance race, Haugastol Turistsenter, lies between Oslo and Bergen, and is the entrance gate to the El dorado of all snow-kiting locations, Hardangervidda in Norway.

Red Bull Ragnarok will select up to 200 hard-core contestants to race for 3 hours; 6 rounds of approximately 30 minutes each, stretching from 10-20km (depending on winds). After each round, if not already given up voluntarily, a number of snow-kite heroes will be eliminated.

The name “Ragnarok” stems from an Event in Norse mythology, describing the last battle between the good and evil Gods, where only the heroes of the battlefield survive.

Red Bull Ragnarok imitates this myth in that only a mere few snow-kite heroes will succeed. Endurance is paramount and only the toughest contestant will make it to the finish line.

Last year’s Event attracted over 50 of the best snowkiters in the world with competitors travelling from as far away as Norway. After the success of the 2008 and 2009 Superfly Open, it is expected that this year’s competition will grow substantially. Competitions during the festival include freestyle, big mountain race, kitecross and big air. For those who want to try their hand at the colorful adventure introductory kite clinics will be offered each day.

All the action takes place just south of the top of the Sunrise Poma lift, in an area known as “The Towers” in the Hidden Lake area of Powder Mountain, which sits at an elevation of about 9,000 ft. The viewing area is wide and open, so folks can cruise on over and take a break from skiing or riding to watch all the action, grab a bratwurst and enjoy the incredible backdrop of the entire Wasatch Range and Great Salt Lake. For non-skiers there will be a groomed trail from the Hidden Lake Lodge parking lot.

If you’ve ever watched the colorful beauty of hot air balloons launching, imagine the basket on a pair of skis or snowboard ripping across the horizon, and you’ll have some inkling of the intrigue of this sport. It’s colorful, it’s dynamic, and it’s COOL! Charge up your cameras and video recorders and head on up to Powder Mountain!

After testing out the prototype of the Sesitec System 2 in Germany, we instantly knew that this system was going to have many different roles. We’ve been talking about setting up the System 2 in the snow since its conception, and now we did. Sesitec owner Christen Lerchenfeld went over to the Vivaldi snowboard park [Vivaldi Park Ski World] in South Korea and helped our friends from HydroTrax set one up at the base of a snowboard run. What a great way to make use of the flat land around snowboard resorts. Put in a small table top and a hand rail and now you’ve turned your unusable area into a snow park. It’s the perfect way to get some good one-on-one instruction sessions. It was brilliant, everyone had such a good time and it seems the snow resort wants to make the Sesitec System 2 a permanent feature. The boys from HydroTrax are currently doing a tour of snow resorts in South Korea, and there is talk of snow resorts in the U.S. wanting the same thing from The Wake Park Project. For three days the colourful parachutes were dominating the landscape between Landeck and Meran. The steady winds from northern direction were pulling the riders by the power of wind using either snowboards or skis. The championships were held in the disciplines racing and freestyle park. Passing a race course the rider has to be as fast as possible and has to overtake all other riders in a triangular course wich takes about 15 minutes. Top speed up to 100 km/h can be reached. The other discipline freestyle shows spectaculare moves to the audit. The location Reschensee offered every day suitable conditions. Even if the wind was not perfect all disciplines ended up with valid rankings.

Snowkite World Champion and fastest racer using his skis was Markus Pompl/ GER (32, Bräunlingen). Fastest Snowkiter using the snowboard was Fabian Haberkorn/ GER (28, Meran). The women category was dominated in Race-Ski bay Kari Schibevag from Norway (32) travelling from a foto shooting at the Etna Mountain. Fatses girl on the snowboard was local rider Iris Tonak from Meran (26).

Freestyle-Ski also Norway showed that ice and snow are longer available for tranings up north: Björn Kaupang (21,Norway) won the male ranking and Kari Schibevag (32,also Norway) won the female ranking. The third Norwegian participant got crowned woth incredible Freestyle-Snowboard performing  Remi Meum (25, Norway). The Meran local  Iris Tonak also performed as the best girl in Freestyle snowboard.

For the national ranking the Event was used to determine the “Deutschen Meister 2010” (germany champion) gekürt. The new german champion men Freestyle-Ski surprisingly is the 18-year old Marian Hund from Habach. The experienced rider on water Jan Schiegnitz (23,Kiel) could transfer most of his tricks on the frozen lake and won the category Freestyle Snowboard. After three days on the frozen lake all participants as well as the organizer know how to warm but are fully satisfied with the first stage of the Snowkite Worldchampionship at the Reschensee. „We have been the stage for absolute top performance in Snowkiting“, race chief Mike Quasten (GPA; german parakite association) summarizes the sports part of the venue. Organizer Pascal Matzke was happy about the numerous spectators at the unique location for the sport wich offers easy access to the public spectator: „More than 1.000 spectators showed up to the Event during the weekend wich so became a kind of missionary project to present snowkiting to the mass – all of the spectators more than happy “. Thus head of local tourism marketing Uli Stampfer of Ferienregion Reschenpass: „We`re glad that we can offer one of the best conditions to stage top snowkiting Events and now have the proof by an international top audience of riders. This fascinating sport is an ideal addition to the sports option our region has to offer. This made us the decision easy to commit the next Snowkite WorldChampionship for 2011 also in Reschen. It will be february 4.-.6.th. 2011.”

Kite Soldiers 2010 is fast approaching! It has already become a tradition for Sinaia to host each year in February the extreme winter air sports festival. The festival programme includes contests extreme paragliding, snowkite and speedfly demonstrations. The success is granted by our special guests, who are famous around the world and are going to impress the public visitors with their special performances.

Winter Air Sports grants us the opportunity to get kiters, media, brands together on the Bucegi 2000 plateau in Romania  for a thrilling competition, a show that preserves the friendly spirit of this sport.
