January 4, 2012—SnyderTalk Editorial: Who Killed Jesus?

A few days ago, there was an interesting piece in Israeli Uncensored News titled “Jews dispute who killed Jesus.” Below is what it said:

“In a rather funny incident, Jewish groups slammed National Geographic for posting a poll on its web site which asked readers who they think killed the founder of their religion: Pilate, the priests, or the Jews. Naturally, many readers held the Jews responsible.

The attention paid to this incident by Jewish groups is hilarious. Obviously, for someone who believes in the story, Jews must be responsible, simply because the gospel says so. No amount of protests from Jews would prompt Christians to rewrite their sacred texts.”

Let me put the question to rest. Who killed Jesus? We did – every single one of us. He died to pay the price for our sins, and He is our atoning sacrifice. It’s true that Jewish priests, ordinary Jews, and Pilate played parts in the process of killing Him, but since He died for all of us, we share responsibility with them. In truth, we did it. Jews are no more and no less responsible than anyone else.

It troubles me deeply that many Jewish people today have such animosity toward Christians that they won’t even consider what the Tanach says about who Yahweh is and what He did for us. Christian beliefs are firmly rooted in the Tanach. In fact, as peculiar as this may sound to some people, since Christians have not substituted the traditions of men that are laid out in the Talmud and the Mishnah for Yahweh’s word that is presented clearly in the Tanach, their views are more Jewish than those of people who were born Jews.

January 4, 2012—Bonus SnyderTalk Editorial: It’s time for Iran to put up or shut up

Iran threatened to take action against the U.S. Navy if carriers return to the Persian Gulf:

“Army chief Ataollah Salehi said the United States had moved an aircraft carrier out of the Gulf because of Iran’s naval exercises, and Iran would take action if the ship returned.

‘Iran will not repeat its warning…the enemy’s carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf,’ he said.

‘I advise, recommend and warn them over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once.’”

The U.S. response was shift:

“‘These are regularly scheduled movements and in accordance with our long-standing commitments to the security and stability of the region and in support of ongoing operations,’ Commander Bill Speaks said in an emailed response to Reuters questions.

‘The U.S. Navy operates under international maritime conventions to maintain a constant state of high vigilance in order to ensure the continued, safe flow of maritime traffic in waterways critical to global commerce,’ he said.”

If President Obama understood the art of diplomacy and the close connection between diplomacy and war, he would order the U.S. carrier fleet back to the Persian Gulf posthaste. The mullahs in Iran are begging for an attitude adjustment, and the time is rapidly approaching when we will have to give them one whether we want to or not. The question at this point is who will initiate the action? Ordering our carrier fleet back to the Persian Gulf would send Iran a crystal clear message: it’s time put up or shut up.

January 3, 2012—SnyderTalk: A Simple Way to Think About the U.S. Debt and Deficit Problems

A SnyderTalk reader sent me an email which contained the information below. It’s a simple way to think about the U.S. debt and deficit problems. The numbers are several months old so the problems we face are actually worse than the numbers suggest, but they’re close enough to get the message across to thinking people:

U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let’s remove 8 zeros and pretend the numbers reflect a household budget:

Annual family income: $21,700
Money the family spent: $38,200
New debt on the credit card: $16,500
Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
Total budget cuts: $385

Our debt and deficit problems aren’t too complicated to understand. In fact, they’re easy to grasp. I get it; you get it; and so do our elected officials. There are two significant differences between us and them. One, we must make ends meet or we’ll go bankrupt. Two, we can’t print money because it’s illegal.

The United States can go bankrupt, too. The Standard & Poor’s downgrade of U.S. bonds suggests that we are moving in that direction. If we don’t control our spending and do it soon, we will go the way of Greece and Italy. If our creditors have to force us to do what we should do on our own, we’ll have rioting in the streets just like Greece and Italy did, and they will force us to deal with our debt and deficit problems unless we take corrective action before it’s too late. I think that it may be too late already, but time will tell.

Unexpected things happen when people take to the streets. For example, just look at what’s taking place right now in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Syria. If you think that it can’t happen here, you are mistaken. The only thing needed to turn a movement such as Occupy Wall Street into violent protests all across the nation is a champion with an agenda. Are those types of people lurking in the shadows? It’s naïve and foolish to believe that they are not.

The 2012 election may be our last opportunity to turn our nation around before we face dire consequences. If you care about our nation’s future, you need to do everything you can to make sure that we elect people who will to act responsibly. That means we need to elect people who are willing to put our nation’s interests ahead of their personal political and financial goals. Is that asking too much? I hope not, but as I said before, time will tell.

This is an excerpt from What Will You Do with the Rest of Your Life?

What will you do with the rest of your life? Without a doubt, that is one of the most intriguing, perplexing, and important questions anyone will ever consider, and the answer we give may determine our eternal well-being. Jesus frequently taught in parables. They were simple stories that He used to explain essential truths. In two of His parables, the main characters were a father and his two sons, and in both of them, He dealt with issues that are related to the question I posed in the title of this book.

This is the gist of the first parable:

A man had two sons. He asked his first son to work in the vineyards. The boy said that he wouldn’t do it, but later he regretted what he had said and went. (Matthew 21: 28-29)
Next, the man asked his second son to work in the vineyards. Immediately he said he would, but he didn’t go. (Matthew 21: 30)
A group of rabbis was standing nearby. Jesus asked them which of the two boys in the parable did the will of their father. The rabbis thought about it and concluded exactly what you would expect. They said that the first son obeyed his father and that the second one didn’t. (Matthew 21: 31)

Jesus’ response either chilled them to the bone or made them incredibly angry. He said,

“Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe him.” Matthew 21: 31-32

The message in this parable is easy to grasp. What you do is more important than what you say. All of us are familiar with people who made professions of faith at some point in their lives, and afterwards they proceeded to lead lives void of any apparent influence by the Spirit of God. We are commanded not to judge them, but we are also told to discern right and wrong — good and evil. Thus, we form an opinion on the basis of what we see about whether their professions of faith were sincere or disingenuous.

We need to be careful when we judge because God is the only One capable of knowing the conditions of our hearts, but we know this. Eventually, if our professions of faith don’t produce fruit, or works that God calls “good,” then our professions were nothing more than window dressing.

The rabbis who answered Jesus’ question were the most respected religious leaders in Israel. They were believed to be Godly men, and they made a show of their zeal and religiosity for all to see. Common people in Israel thought of them as being beyond reproach, but Jesus could see beneath the surface, and His response must have cut them to the quick.

On many occasions, Jesus used harsh language in His dealings with the rabbis. More than any other group, they were responsible for leading Israel astray, but He never excused anyone who followed their teaching. In the end, each one of us is responsible for our own actions no matter which so-called “expert” or “experts” we rely on to guide us in our thinking.

Jesus explained it this way:

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and in Your Name cast out demons, and in Your Name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’” Matthew 7: 21-23

We must do the will of the Father. If we don’t, according to Jesus, we will not enter His kingdom. That explains why the question I’m addressing in this book is so important. Each one of us must make a choice. Will we go our own way and do our own thing, or will we follow the leading of God’s Spirit?

This is what Paul said:

“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8: 14

Again, the message is clear. What you do matters more than what you say. You should be able to tell if God is leading you, and you should know whether you are following Him. If you can’t detect God’s leading in your life, then you need to start reading your Bible and praying. If you seek God, He will let you find Him. Jesus explained it this way:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7: 7-11

If God is tugging at your heart and you’re not following Him, this book could help to bring about a change in your life. There is no higher calling than doing the will of the Father. If you are following the leading of God’s Spirit, this book will help you to plot a course.

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where —” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.

“— so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a wonderful book, and it’s not just for kids. I taught leadership and strategy at the University of Virginia and consulted with people in a wide variety of organizations for 25 years. Based on my experience during one-quarter of a century dealing with thousands of people — both young and not so young, I reached the conclusion that Lewis Carroll’s epic heroine, Alice, is very much like most of the people with whom I came into contact. Below are some general observations I made over the years:

Most people don’t have a very good idea where they’re going.
They don’t give their futures too much thought. At least they don’t give the future enough attention to take action now.
They’re not overly concerned about their lack of direction. Some of them give you a peculiar look if you suggest that not taking steps now to deal with anticipated future events is dangerous. It’s as though they think that planning for the future is absurd.
They seem to believe that things will work out for them no matter what they do — or don’t do.

Doris Day made this line famous in a hit song from the 1956 movie The Man Who Knew Too Much: que sera sera. It’s Spanish for “what will be will be.” That’s a good description of the logic I saw most people using. They think their actions don’t matter, but they do.

It reminds me of a Denise the Menace cartoon that I saw several years ago. Dennis and his pal Joey were walking aimlessly through the woods one bright, sunny day. Denise calmly looked down at Joey and said, “We may be lost, but we’re making good time.” After I stopped laughing, I shook my head and thought, That’s right. Most people are extremely busy, but they aren’t going in any particular direction and don’t seem to care. They’re lost, but they’re making good time.

Not planning is planning to fail. In the quote at the beginning of this chapter, that’s what the Cheshire Cat was telling Alice in a roundabout way. If you don’t have a destination in mind, it doesn’t matter which way you go. Sailors have another way of saying it. If you don’t know where you’re heading, no wind is the right wind.

The Cheshire Cat was right about another thing too. You’re sure to end up somewhere. All you have to do is just keep walking. Problem is that unless you take some time to figure out where you’re going and why, you’ll probably end up someplace where you don’t want to be.

Digg is a social networking website where people share online content with others:

From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by our community. We’re here to provide tools for our community to discover content, discuss the topics that they’re passionate about, connect with like-minded people, and make some new friends in the process. By looking at information through the lens of the collective community on Digg, you’ll always find something interesting and unique. We’re committed to giving every piece of content on the web an equal shot at being the next big thing.”

If you examine the share icon on most websites, you will discover that Digg is one of hundreds of options available. Facebook and Twitter are two others, but Digg keeps a running tally of the number of times articles and other things posted on the Internet are “digged” by readers and then publishes the results on its website by category. Today, in the “Top News in Politics” category, the top five postings are:

By simply clicking on the title, Digg enthusiasts are able to see what others are saying, and if they are part of the Digg community, they can add their two cents worth. For example, the first item listed deals with a recent book that claims President Nixon was gay. What Nixon was or wasn’t isn’t the issue. The point is that the item listed, or more precisely the item’s title, is a launching pad for the Digg community to sound off on an issue, and what they have to say is revealing because the comments provide a glimpse into what people are thinking and saying.

Digg readers had these things to say, among others, about the Nixon piece, and the comments are verbatim:

“Bleh. I call bulls**t. This mudslinging is no better than the conspiracy trash pushed by various other mouth-breathing dolts.”

“Look up bohemian grove! Its not bulls**t!”

“Everyone is gay except gay people. They are the straight ones.”

“I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.”

“In the future, this will be a nonissue regardless of who is being discussed. Lol”

“Such an intelligent comment. I mean that seriously. I await the day when what you said comes to fruition.”

“Move along, folks, this isn’t news. It’s no surprise because all Republicans are in the closet”

“of course they are, someone said it about a republican so it has now got to be twisted around to be about democrats. just like everything else. you guys are so predictable.”

If you want to know what people are thinking and saying about the “gay rights” issue at this moment, Digg is a great place to start, but it’s not the only place you can go to put your finger on the pulse of the public. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube provide similar information, but they don’t publish their results the way Digg does.

I became aware of the power of social networking while I was writing a book titled Falsely Accused. It’s about a young woman named Cyndi Marchbanks who was charged with double homicide in Anderson County South Carolina after she shot a pregnant woman who broke into her home to beat her to a pulp or worse. The intruder died instantly, but the baby was delivered postmortem and kept alive on machines for 40 days before she died.

The facts of the case reveal that no law was broken. It was a clear-cut case of self defense. The facts also show that the investigation was shoddy. From start to finish, detectives spent less than two hours investigating, and the prosecutor was running for re-election in a heated campaign. This was a high-profile case that was tailor-made for a politician who needed to show the community that she was tough on crime even though no crime was committed.

People living in Anderson never saw the facts. All they knew was what they read, heard, or saw on television. In their eyes, Marchbanks was a hideous monster, the cold-blooded killer of a mother and her unborn child because that’s the way she was portrayed. To this day, you can read about the case on topix.net, another social networking website. The last comment on topix.net was posted in March 2011, four and a half years after the shooting. To date, 971 comments about the case have been posted on topix.net and most of them are off-the-wall, but we live in a world where facts don’t matter. Those comments, as ludicrous as most of them are, have more influence on people’s thinking than the facts ever will.

A jury acquitted Marchbanks in near record time because the evidence for self defense was overwhelming, but to this day she remains a cold-blooded killer in the minds of most people living in Anderson thanks to social networking. Don’t underestimate the power of social networking. We live in a world where perception is everything, and people who understand the power of social networking are using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Digg, and other social networking websites to shape perceptions and win others over to their points of view regardless of the facts.

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other social networking websites were used as tools to promote the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street. They were used in 2008 by candidate Obama to win the hearts and minds of voters, and he’s using them again this go-around for everything from fundraising to promoting his positions on issues.

Today, President Obama is ranked number 7 on Twitter’s list of “The Top 100 Most Followed on Twitter” with 11,677,598 followers. Those ahead of him on the list include Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, and Shakira. Those closely trailing Obama include Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Ashton Kutcher. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and the other GOP hopefuls aren’t even listed in Twitter’s Top 100. For comparison purposes, Bill Gates is ranked 42nd on the list with 4,917,575 followers, and the New York Times is ranked 59th with 4,198,774 followers.

When the votes are tallied in November 2012, the winner of the presidential campaign is likely to be the candidate that understood and used social networking most effectively. At this time, the Republican field has a long way to go before they catch up with Obama. This may seem to be a trivial point, but as I said, don’t underestimate the power of social networking.

This is an excerpt from His Name is Yahweh.

Just as Yahweh told them He would do, He removed His protective hedge from around the Children of Israel because of their sins. They had not obeyed Him so they had to defend themselves. During Gideon’s day, God allowed Midian to invade Israel and steal their crops and flocks. Things were so bad in Israel that Gideon was forced to hide his wheat to keep the Midianites from taking it.

Yahweh appeared to Gideon in Ophrah. He sat down under an oak tree and said, “Yahweh is with you, O valiant warrior.” (Judges 6: 12) He meant it literally because He was with Gideon in Person at that moment, but it took Gideon by surprise since he was not a warrior. However, Yahweh saw what Gideon would become and declared that he was, in fact, a warrior.

Gideon did not realize he was talking to Yahweh in Person, and with a skeptical tone in his voice he asked,“O my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why has all this happened? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about…?” (Judges 6: 13)

Yahweh simply looked at him and told him to go and deliver Israel. Then He said, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.” (Judges 6: 16)

Gideon remained doubtful, but he did not want to offend the Man so he invited Him to stay and share a meal. Yahweh accepted his invitation, and He waited patiently while Gideon prepared meat and bread. When Gideon brought the meal to Yahweh, He told him to place it on a nearby rock. Then Yahweh touched the food with the end of His staff, and fire came up out of the rock and consumed it. Immediately Yahweh vanished.

At that moment, Gideon knew he had been talking with God Himself, and he said, “Alas, O Adonai Yahweh! For now I have seen Yahweh face to face.” (Judges 6: 22) Then Gideon heard Yahweh say these words: “Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die.” (Judges 6: 23)

It took Gideon a little time to understand what Yahweh wanted him to do, and he needed constant reassurance. However, eventually Gideon delivered Israel from Midian under the miraculous guidance of Yahweh, and he turned the hearts and minds of the Children of Israel back to their God.

December 29, 2011—SnyderTalk Editorial: Herman Cain is a good man, but he wasn’t a serious candidate for President of the United States.

I have not decided who I will support for the presidency in 2012, but I have decided who I will not support: Barack Obama. My reasons for opposing Obama are many and varied. For instance, he has been a disaster for the U.S. economy. His so-called “stimulus programs” including TARP turned out to be little more than paybacks to individuals and organizations that supported candidate Obama in 2008. The president wasted more than $2 trillion of our hard-earned and borrowed money while our economy fizzled. That money could have been used, for example, to develop the infrastructure needed to produce and sell natural gas throughout the U.S. and to convert the nation’s entire truck fleet to natural gas. The long-term return on that kind of investment would have been huge, and there would have been plenty of money left over to make other truly stimulative investments.

As commander-in-chief, President Obama leaves a lot to be desired. His showboating about “killing Osama bin Laden” and ending the Iraq War may win him liberal votes in November 2012, but he has done more to scuttle our military than any president in my memory. Under his watch, our enemies and potential enemies have grown stronger while we have become weaker, and we are debating gutting the military completely. Things are so bad that Obama’s Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, has let it be known publically that the defense cuts being considered by the majority Democrats in the Senate would make the U.S. military a paper tiger. President Obama has done nothing to alter the course of the debate. That says a lot.

Obama’s “shove it down your throat” way of getting things done is the exact opposite of what our Founding Fathers had in mind. Obamacare is a perfect example of this. Anyone who knows anything about healthcare and the cost of healthcare delivery realizes that the system we had in place in 2008 was leading us to fiscal collapse and that change was long overdue. The president squandered a perfect opportunity to make significant improvements in our healthcare system and lots of dollars to boot while he rewarded his friends and punished his enemies in the healthcare sector of the economy. After almost 3 years in office, our healthcare system is in worse shape than it was in 2008, and we are wasting precious time and money trying to get back to square one so we can begin the process all over again.

Obama’s foreign policy is a joke, and it isn’t funny; his penchant for class warfare is dividing our country at a time when we need to be coming together; the Obama Justice Department is about anything but justice; and the president has done more to undermine Israel in the eyes of the world than I could have imagined. As I said, there are many reasons why I believe supporting President Obama is a mistake of gargantuan proportions. We need a change at the top, but “better than Obama” is not the right standard to use when selecting his opponent. The GOP nominee for the presidency needs to be much better than Obama. We’ve reached the point as a nation where we have very little time left to tackle the tough problems we face, and the next president will have to get the job done or we will face serious consequences.

That said, I did not support Herman Cain. At first I did, because I thought that a conservative black man running against Obama in a general election would divide the Democratic Party and siphon off enough votes to win the election. I ignored the allegations about Cain’s sexual indiscretions since it looked to me as though those charges were contrived. Besides, I know how the game is played, and the Democrats may not be good at much, but they do know how to smear their opponents.

I decided that I couldn’t support Herman Cain after he gave an interview to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and responded to a question about whether he agreed with President Obama’s handing of the Libya situation in a way that can only be described as amateurish. I wrote about it in American Thinker and included a YouTube video titled “Herman Cain on Libya” to explain my rationale. What I didn’t say in that piece but should have is that the GOP contenders for the presidency had just completed their foreign policy debate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Prepping for that debate should have prepared Cain to answer any foreign policy question that anyone could ask, and the question he couldn’t handle wasn’t a gotcha question. It was a softball, and Cain’s response surprised the interviewers as much as it did me.

After stumbling around for what seemed like an eternity, Cain finally said that he would call in his advisors and hash it out before making a decision. That’s great, and every president does just that before making important decisions, but the question in my mind was whether Herman Cain was a serious candidate. He should have had an opinion about Obama’s handling of the Libya situation, and he shouldn’t have needed coaching from the interviewers to know what Obama did or didn’t do. A serious contender would have reeled off the reasons why Obama should have done this or that as though he knew exactly what should have happened. If Herman Cain couldn’t answer a question like that, then he is no match for Barack Obama, and as I said, “better than Obama” isn’t good enough.

Today’s American Thinker includes an article by Lloyd Marcus titled “Herman Cain: A Final Word.” While I agree with most of the things that Marcus said, nothing he said would cause me to change my mind about a man who could have won the GOP nomination if he had done his homework. I still don’t know who I will support for president in 2012, but I do know this much: the GOP nominee must be acceptable to voters in the middle of the political spectrum. If he or she is not prepared to handle Obama in a one-on-one debate, he or she will be mincemeat and Obama will be re-elected.

So they went to the king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and they reported all the words to the king. Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it to the king as well as to all the officials who stood beside the king. Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, with a fire burning in the brazier before him. When Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier. Yet the king and all his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, nor did they rend their garments. Even though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah pleaded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. Following the lead of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, the European Central Bank (ECB) is considering quantitative easing:

“A top European Central Bank policymaker has called for ‘quantitative easing’ to be used to boost the euro zone economy if deflation risks emerge across the 17-country region.

The comments by Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, ECB executive board member, are the strongest indication yet that the central bank would expand its policy tools to prevent a possible disastrous economic slump in continental Europe.”

In the U.S., we refer to it as QE. According to Business Insider, QE

“…describes a form of monetary policy used by central banks to increase the supply of money in an economy when the bank interest rate, discount rate and/or interbank interest rate are either at, or close to, zero.

A central bank does this by first crediting its own account with money it has created ex nihilo (“out of nothing”). It then purchases financial assets, including government bonds and corporate bonds, from banks and other financial institutions in a process referred to as open market operations. The purchases, by way of account deposits, give banks the excess reserves required for them to create new money by the process of deposit multiplication from increased lending in the fractional reserve banking system. The increase in the money supply thus stimulates the economy. Risks include the policy being more effective than intended, spurring hyperinflation, or the risk of not being effective enough, if banks opt simply to pocket the additional cash in order to increase their capital reserves in a climate of increasing defaults in their present loan portfolio.”

QE reduces the risk of deflation because the supply of goods and services doesn’t increase, but the supply of money does, thus increasing the monetary value of existing assets. “Inflating the economy” is another term used to describe this process, and while it does minimize deflation, it increases the risk of runaway inflation considerably. It also reduces the value of debt because cheaper currency is used to pay off existing debt.

Under QE, people, institutions, and countries holding bonds see the value of their bonds fall precipitously. That’s why countries like China, for example, don’t think too much of QE:

“China Investment Corp. Vice Chairman Gao Xiqing said that central banks’ quantitative easing policies are hurting the value of money just one day after the Federal Reserve maintained plans to buy $600 billion of Treasuries.

‘You know money is gradually becoming not worth the paper it’s printed on,’ Gao said at an event sponsored by HSBC Holdings Plc at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland today. Recent gains in commodity and food prices reflect the ‘long-term view’ of investors that prices will accelerate, he said.”

Gao’s concern about commodity price inflation is well-founded. Under QE, the prices of commodities increase rapidly as the currency supply expands thus making things like food and oil more expensive. Those hardest hit by inflation in commodity prices are the poor, especially the poor in emerging countries.

Commodity price inflation was the torch that lit the Arab Spring in Tunisia and the rest of the Arab world early this year:

“In Tunisia, it was Mohammed Bouazizi, a food vendor in the city of Sidi Bouzid, who, after years of taunting and abuse by the police, immolated himself in rage and frustration, and ignited the storm that subsequently erupted. But it was the price of food that had changed Mohammed Bouazizi’s world, for the beatings were a regular feature of his life. And so too in Egypt, it is the price of basic foodstuffs — that consume as much as half of a typical family’s income — rather than the denial of basic rights that marks a material change in peoples[’] lives.”

If the ECB decides to proceed with yet another round of QE, can we expect more violent outbursts around the world? The simple answer to that question is “YES!”

Was it at his dictation?” Then Baruch said to them, “He dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book.” Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.”
