We all know the ombre trend is nothing new (it's made an appearance on everything from Easter eggs to tights, for example...). But did you know that the trend is poised to make its next beauty mark...on your lips? Disabilities In The Media: How do you spell winner?

If you look up the word winner in the dictionary, chances are you'll find a photo of Richelle Zampella next to it.

The Oklahoma fifth grader is headed to Washington D.C. next week to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She'll join some 275 others -- all armed with a love of Orthography (get out that trusty dictionary again...) -- in her quest to be crowned spelling champ.

Just another ordinary weekend for Richelle, right? Not exactly, considering the 11-year-old is anything but ordinary. Her trip to the National Bee comes on the heels of her March victory in the Eastern Oklahoma State Spelling Bee -- after 16 rounds, she defeated the reigning champ by correctly spelling the word stollen, a German fruit cake.

Oh, and she's also legally blind. Richelle began learning to read and write in Braille when she was five and won't let anything stand in her way. "At the school, they teach you, you can do anything you want," she says of the Oklahoma School for the Blind. She'll be studying two hours a day to prepare for the Bee, using a PACmate laptop computer that displays Braille. Good luck, Richelle!

Can you imagine opening the new issue of Glamour magazine and finding these tips inside? My mind nearly exploded over the one that advised women to "flatter your date by talking about the things he wants to talk about."

Thank goodness my grandmother never followed these rules! It makes you wonder if we'll look back years from now and say, "Wow, women in 2012 were so archaic...)

I've never cared much for the story of Peter Pan. In fact, it always seemed like the opposite of a fairy tale to me. Aside from the scary, creepy pirate with a penchant birds and hooks and the gaggle of misfit boys who are decidedly, well, lost, the story sends quite a terrible message.

Peter Pan. The boy who never, ever wanted to grow up.

A boy who refuses to grow up? Sounds like a horrible nightmare to me. To this day, I have no idea why Wendy was so taken with Peter. If I were her, I would have run the other way the first time he even mentioned Never, Never Land. Didn't she see the agonizing, confusing and frustrating years ahead in dealing with the man-child -- not to mention all those Lost Boys, remember?

Now, I know this might sound a bit strange (and hypocritical...) coming from me, boys, seeing as how I've openly declared myself Team Younger Guy before, but saying goodbye to my twenties has made me want to say hello to a different sort of guy. He doesn't suffer from what I've dubbed the Peter Pan Complex -- symptoms include a love of late-night parties, a tendency toward evading responsibility and a preference for video games over, well, any sort of job.
That whole rebel-without-a-cause thing? Well, it's intoxicating when you're younger, but here's the thing: It has, like those Ramen noodles Peter Pan would probably eat, a shelf life. Whether you like it or not, boys, it is finite. There comes a time in life when you have to turn the Xbox off, get up off the floor, make your Spider-Man-sheets bed, get dressed (not in a pair of baggy pants, though) and pour your own bowl of Lucky Charms.

Because, really, a man who shows maturity is perhaps the sexiest thing in the world. A man is someone who doesn't play mind games, but wants to connect with your mind. A man is someone who calls right after a date if he's really into you, regardless of those stupid dating rules. A man is someone who is excited to meet your parents and learn about where you came from. A man isn't afraid of those relationship-defining conversations. And for me, especially for me, a man isn't afraid of my disability -- or to date someone with a disability, for that matter.

As The Office's Mindy Kaling says in her recent memoir, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?: "I’m giving you this bit of wisdom: When you turn 30—maybe even before—a fun thing to try is dating men. It’ll be like freshly ground peanut butter, times a million."
Like Mindy, I need a man, not a boy. So, I hope you understand, boys, if I don't immediately jump at the chance to fly with you to the second star to the right and straight on 'til morning. I guess that's just never really been my speed. xoxo

What inspires you?

On a Sunday afternoon walk with my mother a few years ago, I felt particularly drained. The sun shining (how's that for irony?) and the grass finally turning that green hue that reminds us of summer, my brain felt like one giant puddle of left-over-from-spring mud.

"What's wrong with me?" I asked my mother, hoping she'd say something warm and encouraging and cuddle me up in a giant bear hug.

"You just need to do it," she said, and by do it, I'm pretty sure that translates to "stop thinking so much..."

She had a point, even if I didn't get my hug.

Don't we all feel this way at some point in our lives? There will be times when we need a little dose of inspiration thrown our way - those times when we just need to sit back and remember the little thing in life that we love. I find it helpful to list a few of my inspirations to get myself out of that rut and back into the light. Here are a few of my inspirations. What inspires you? I'd love to read your list.
Favorite Place in the World: My home. I'm a homebody and have always been one! There's something so comforting about just staying home, curling up with a cup of cocoa and watching my favorite show, Frasier, with my mom. Plus, I get some of my best writing done at home; my room is a great place for thinking!

Favorite Fashion Statement: I'll be the first to admit that I'm just now getting a sense of style. I never really cared much before, but I'm finding it fun to discover pieces such as vintage jewelry. I'm really, really into that right now. I (shamefully?) have quite a few boxes lying around the house, much to the annoyance of my mother and sister.
Favorite Movie: I'm probably the only person on the planet who has seen this movie over 100 times, but the '80's film, Shag, is my absolute favorite! It's a great coming-of-age movie about 4 friends set against the backdrop of the sands and surf of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1963. The film chronicles their last summer hurrah before they all go their separate ways. It's got great music too, which I love.
Favorite purse: I fear my mother passed on her purse curse to me. I recently started using a very small, green bag, and more often than not, I've got way too much stuff in there, which is another sign I'm turning into my mother. At any one time, you could probably find a dollar's worth of loose change, a couple Hershey's kisses and occasionally, the random PEZ dispenser.

Favorite animals: Hands down, our cats. Because, really, who wouldn't be inspired by their cuteness? :)

Mad Men wedding

Oh my goodness, can you imagine getting married in the offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce? Jason and Taylor dreamed of a classic '60s-style wedding, and with the help of famed wedding planner, David Tutera, the couple celebrated their special day...on the set of Mad Men!
"When I saw Jason at the end of the aisle, tears were instantly in my eyes," Taylor says. "Jason and I have been together for 8 years. It was long overdue because I have known that he was “The One” since our first date. David and his team made Jason far more handsome than Donald Draper ever could be. Every tear shed was of pure happiness and love."

"Jason and I are big into retro fashion, especially the sixties, so the concept just kinda snowballed from there," Taylor says. "I thought I could make the whiskey and cigar bar have a lounge feel like in Mad Men. I wanted it to feel like the place they take clients for drinks and dinner."
Isn't that amazing? You'd really feel like you'd stepped back in time for the day. What television or movie set do you dream of getting married on, friends? xoxo

An Open Letter To Mary Kennedy's children

To Mary Kennedy's four children:
I've been sitting here for a few minutes now trying to think of the perfect way to start this letter -- the perfect words, the right anecdote, the perfect formula. But sometimes life doesn't afford us with the perfect instruction manual, does it? I know that now, more than ever, you could use an instruction manual. You're in shock. Your world has just been ripped out from under you. The unimaginable has happened. You feel alone.

Well, sadly, you're not alone. I say sadly because I wish you didn't have to be in this club. I wish I didn't have to be in this club. I wish no one had to be in this club. It's a club we didn't want to join. In fact, we had no choice in our initiation into said club. Instead, this club and a whole new world was thrust upon us as the result of a single, life-defining moment.

The suicide of a parent.

I can only imagine the confusion and sadness you're going through right now. I can imagine this because I've been in this club for some nine years now, and I remember those first few months all too well. You're trying, as best you can, to wrap your head around something so scary, something so horrific, but it's nearly impossible to rationally wrap your head around something so irrational and senseless.

And although I won't pretend to know exactly what you're going through, I thought I'd offer a few gems of comfort that I wish someone had given to me nine years ago. Here are four things I hope you never forget...
It's normal to feel numb
My body was running on auto pilot, especially during the first six months, and I'm not sure I was even really feeling anything at all. I just went through the motions, and honestly, I was just going and going and saw no point in stopping, at least at the time. Your emotions are probably so raw right now that your body will only let you experience them in small doses -- feeling numb is the body's way of protecting you. So just trust it. It knows what it's doing.

It's not your fault
Even now, I sometimes wonder if things would be different if I had woken up just 30 minutes earlier on that fateful Monday morning, or if there were some obvious signs that we missed. Yet no matter what you said, did or didn't do, I hope you never feel even an ounce of guilt over your mother's death. It wasn't your fault, so never let that all-too-common feeling of guilt swallow you whole. It can be a powerful force, tempting you to fall into its trap.

It's OK to be angry
In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that it would border on abnormal if you weren't angry. Never before had I experienced the kind of anger I did after my father died. At first, it was this all-encompassing rage over the fact that he would willingly choose to leave his family. What was he thinking? Didn't he love us? My anger was also directed at the powerlessness I felt about the whole situation. I didn't sign up for this. It was never part of the plan. Where am I supposed to go from here? All those feelings? Just know that they are normal -- being angry doesn't mean you hate your mother; it means you hate what she did.

It's OK to keep asking "Why?" for as long as you need to
I still find myself asking this question every once and awhile, but I never beat myself up over it. I suppose it's all part of the journey we're on -- a journey together toward reconciling our loved one's death and integrating it into our lives.

Letters To My Future Husband: Letter #156.

Dear Mr. Melissa Blake:

Does embracing who you are ever become a hindrance to who you could be? I've been thinking a lot about this question lately, Sweetpea, especially when it comes to my disability. We all have parts of ourselves that we readily embrace more than other parts. Maybe it's because we're more comfortable with them and other parts are simply too scary to confront -- at least for the time being. Or, maybe the opposite is true -- we work extra hard to embrace, well, the thing that at first feel so embraceable to us, and before we know it, that one thing has become the only thing. Everything else has seemingly been tossed aside.

Don't get me wrong, Sweetpea. I'm proud that I've gotten to a place in my life where my disability is just one part of me, not all of me. But sometimes I wonder if all the work I've done has come with a rather heavy price tag. Just think about it: How would your life be different today if you'd chosen to focus on a different aspect of yourself, cultivating it and watching it blossom? Would you be a different person? Though maybe you were able to strike a better balance than I was. I never want to forget who I am despite my disability because that would sort of negate everything I've worked so hard to do, you know? But at the same time, I do want to show that I've integrated my disability into the person I am today, which is someone who isn't ashamed of who she is.
Sometimes, it feels like embracing is confused with settling. Embracing who you are doesn't mean "OK, this is who I am and there's nothing I can do about it." Instead, it means -- at least to me -- that "OK, this is who I am right now and I am happy with the person I've become." So maybe when you look at things that way, embracing who you are is sort of like the on-ramp in the journey to the person you could be, to the person you are meant to be. So are we left accepting parts of ourselves at the expense of other parts? Something tells me all good things come in time. Wouldn't you agree, Sweetpea? Until we meet...

Let's talk summer hair!

Remember when I talked about my big dreams of wanting big hair, the kind that cascades down your back, is tousled without looking like you just rolled out of bed and doesn't get in the way of everything (bangs, I'm talking to you...)? Well, I've realized that summer and long, flowing hair just don't go together very well. So a few days ago, I got a shorter 'do in preparation for the hottest months of the year, and I feel lighter and breezier already (and no, that is not a stool growing out of my head; my sister had just washed our kitchen floor). And if my short hair wasn't enough to get me pumped for summer, a peek at some summer hairspirations sure did the trick. Short 'dos seem to be all the rage. Here are six lovely looks I'm loving...
