Recently (Camping & Back Home Again)

Our camping trip was an absolute success. Beautiful weather & cozy nights by the campfire. My mister and I are both a touch sunburned (my nose burns no matter how many SPFs I slather on), but even so, our weekend was fantastic -- a much needed, mellow vacation. And we can't wait to go again. We've already planned a trip for July... and are thinking about one for June as well. But this time, with Gretchen, of course! She can't wait to camp out in a tent. Last year she did a few backyard camp-outs with her gramma and she's excited to try it again!

After getting home from our weekend away, Rich and I felt especially productive -- we actually unpacked and did all of our laundry by mid-afternoon, picked up Gretchen & had dinner! Not too shabby for waking up in a tent that morning, 2 hours from home. I'm already anxious for our next trip. (I'm also trying to plan a little getaway for my mister and myself for his birthday that's coming up soon... I suspect he already knows I'm up to something, so I'm not too worried if he reads this. Hush, hush.)

PS. Those lilacs? Gretchen picked them for me at my mom's place this weekend, and brought them home. They are making our condo smell AMAZING. Yum!

Long Weekend Love

This weekend, my mister and I are taking off on a camping trip together. Not too far away, just about an hour or so's drive, and I'm so looking forward to mellow nights by the fire, relaxing days, and sleeping in, while the little miss is with family.

After my less than fun illness last month, I'm finally feeling much more like myself. I'm definitely looking forward to taking a few days of pure rejuvenation. Afternoon naps, lots of reading, and some quality time with my wonderful partner.

Lilacs Are My Favourite

The lilacs are just starting to blossom in our neck of the woods. I can't wait til they're all out in full bloom, so I can bring them inside & fill our home with their intoxicating, romantic scent. Even Gretchen knows how much her mama loves them.

I hope your day is getting off to a beautiful start, friends. This morning I'm off to meet a friend for coffee before we both head downtown to work. The weekend is nearly here... and with it? Our camping trip. More about that soon. I'm practically twitchy with excitement!

Today Was A Big Day

Today I celebrated a huge milestone, mes amis!

Today marked one year since taking over as the owner of Tango, my clothing shop in downtown Peterborough!

I can hardly believe that an entire year has passed! This has been my busiest, craziest year ever of my life. I've worked so hard to make changes & transform Tango into my own vision. A big thank you to everyone who came out, brought me flowers, supported our indie biz, and came out to spread the love!

I'll have to admit, I'm pretty proud of our new Springtime window displays. So far, this is my favourite look! Thanks to one of my shopgals for helping out with a little window painting, and for making our Gypsy Barn sandwich board stand out!

It's SO handy to have a costume shop next door, filled with fabulous balloons for our special day!

Happy anniversary flowers from our neighbours up the street at Hi Ho Silver!

Delicious food from Black Honey -- another downtown favourite!

Sometimes I go weeks without REALLY looking at my shop from the outside, but every time I do, I'm excited to see how our displays look from a distance. It's a funny thing to be inside the shop each day, but to not always view it the way others may view it. Does that even make sense? Either way, as I made my way home after our anniversary party this evening, I was so pleased to take a peek back, to take a moment and look at my shop. My shop. Even that is still a surprise sometimes. Perhaps I forget how big of a thing it is that I've done, or I forget that I'm in a position that not many 20somethings find themselves in.

And so I stood across the street and took a moment. A moment to breath, relax, and know that life is just incredible at times. It's so important not to let it all slide by. Enjoy ALL those moments, mes amis.

Many thanks to my friends, family, my loving & wonderful partner and to my little girl who makes life beautiful every single day.

{Small Style} The Return Of Small Style!

Fact: My last Small Style post dates back to June 2012. Yikes!

The other day, at the warming party of our favourite seasonal cafe, I started snapping a few pics of Gretchen playing down by the water and I KNEW I had to get back into sharing her outfits. Love that stylish lass! She's definitely developing her own sense of what she enjoys wearing, but she still lets me pick some outfits out. Sometimes, however, she's adamant about a certain item of clothing and so help me if I disagree. (Sure, you can wear the poofy party dress to the park in the rain... why not...!)

Here's what we put together for Sunday's adventure.

Flip-flops & dress: Old Navy (aka Easter Bunny & a birthday present) // Top: I believe Joe Fresh (every girl needs a little jean shirt love)

Her hair is wild and free. Won't be tamed, girl. She's all about it.

Our waterway is VERY high right now. The path where G is walking is completely underwater... as is the dock that you can't see at all. She was thrilled to stomp around in the (chilly!) water. All she could talk about was taking her shoes off and splashing in the river. Love!

That Time I Missed A Week Of Life & My Birthday

Remember my last post... on the 13th? When Gretchen was just getting better and life was good again? Well, here's the Cliff's Notes version of what has been happening since:

Sunday April 14th: I woke up with achy muscles and within an hour or two was in so much pain I couldn't move. I stayed in bed, delirious, cold (actually very feverish), and in pain. By that night my partner convinced me a trip to emerg was in order. I spend the evening having blood taken and hooked up to fluids via IV. I was sent home with antibiotics for a possible sinus infection.

Monday/Tuesday: Home, agony, could barely move or talk. Breathing was difficult and laboured.

Wednesday aka my birthday: Another day at home in bed, by that evening I made my second trip to emerg. I was sent home a few hours later with painkillers. The doc told me to wait out the antibiotics.

Gretchen made me the sweetest card. Rich brought it to the hospital. I missed her so much.

Thursday: A day on the couch, couldn't move, face became numb after taking painkillers, nothing was helping. I booked in for a doctor's appointment that evening. During the appointment, I could hardly speak in full sentences, did my best to explain the week. He sent me back to the hospital. That night is a blur of IV fluids, being locked down in emerg, my friend and then my partner at my side. Antibiotics were started and I drifted in and out of sleep. Thank you pain meds.

Friday: I woke up to my partner at my side & I was eventually moved from one part of emerg to another. Lots of resting.

Saturday: Still at the hospital, though I had hoped to go home that morning. Starting to feel more human. I can breathe and speak much more easily.

Tea & The Hobbit.

Sunday: Good news. I can go home. I have to be sure my blood count improves this week. I'm so excited to see daylight again.

Goodbye, room no. 7.

So now, Monday. I am very week and easily tired. One more blood test Thursday with a follow-up appointment one week from today. I'm very happy to be out of the hospital. Working hard to stay positive while I get my appetite and energy levels back up to what they were. Today I came into work for just three hours & I even managed to get my plate stickers renewed since I missed doing that on my birthday.

Thank you so much to everyone for your support and well-wishes this week. Thank you to my partner for running all errands and helping make sure my daughter was where she needed to be. Thank you to Rich, and to my good friend Karen for bringing me food and driving me to/from the hospital and doctor's office. Thank you to the nurses who helped me get well.

In the end, I think they decided I had some combination of blood infection, fungal infection in my esophagus and just some nasty complications from the fever. It was a bit of a scary week & I've absolutely never felt sicker.

If I ever take a week off from life again, I hope it's for a nicer reason.

At The End Of The Storm

Thanks for all your sweet comments on Thursday's post. G is definitely on her way to feeling better. Last night was our first night with no coughing fit wakeups, and she slept in right til 8am! Wowzers. There's still a bit of a tickle in her throat, but no more fever, and the runny nose is drying up too. Thank goodness. It's been a long, long week, friends. Looking forward to a mellow Sunday at home with my loves.

Hoping For Calm, Waiting It Out

We've had a trying week over here, folks. Gretchen has been battling a cold that has dragged on longer than I'd like. Nothing serious, of course, just toughing out that last stretch of mild fevers, coughing fits and runny nose nonsense, but she's sick of it and I hate seeing her upset and ill. No one's getting much sleep, but she's been in good spirits for the most part... such a little trooper... and she's eating well, drinking well. The worst part might be her poor sore face from all the nose-wiping action that has taken place.

Does anyone have an effective remedy for what one of my best friends would call "snot rash"?

It's the worst thing in the world, to watch your kiddo in such an uncomfortable state, with no way to make her well immediately. About two weeks ago, everyone came down with that nasty stomach flu, including G. And now we're dealing with this. Sigh. Can't catch a break. And to top it off... the weather in our area has been awful too. Nearly two weeks into April and we've got ICE and SNOW again. Seriously, mother nature. What gives?

Hopefully we're nearing the end of the sick and beginning of happier weather. My birthday is in a week. Fingers crossed for recovery all around. Happy babe. Happy weather. Happy mama.

Moving day is... tomorrow! The last few weeks have been crazybusyfast. Everyone around me had the stomach flu, including Gretchen and my partner, but I somehow managed to duck that insanity. Gretchen was such a trooper through her bouts of throwing up and I'm happy to report she's completely recovered and is back to being her fantastic, happy self again. There's nothing like watching your little ones go through something you can't fix for them immediately. Thank you immune systems and strong little bodies.

Now that everyone is well again, I'm in pure MOVE MODE which means I've spent approx. one day packing and I'm actually just about finished. With episodes of Friends playing in the background, a constant supply of tea, and my fabulous staff helping hold down the fort at the shop, I'm just about ready to pack up the moving van tomorrow and say goodbye to Hopkins Avenue.

I have to take just a moment to say how excited I am to be moving in with my partner. This will be the fourth time I've moved since starting the blog back in August 2008 and I'm really excited to share our new home with you. I can hardly believe tomorrow is the day!

If you've been following over on Instagram, you've probably spotted my packing progress pics... and I have to say, it's going MUCH quicker than I had thought it would. Since I decluttered BIG TIME when I moved in the summer, I actually don't have any of that nasty sorting business to go through. (Yay!) Just popping stuff into boxes... and off we go!

I'll be sure to tweet along on moving day and as G's new room comes together. Can't wait!

A Local Legend, A Proud Hometown Moment

On March 6th, Stompin' Tom Conners, a Canadian legend, passed away. On March 13th, his memorial took place in my hometown, Peterborough, Ontario.

The celebration of life was broadcast live by a local station where my partner, Rich, is a producer. He had the honour of directing the entire ceremony and I couldn't be more proud of the amazing job he did. He, along with his co-workers and volunteers, gave the event such a special touch.

A beautiful tribute to a fantastic Canadian. The line up of musical guests and speakers is just incredible... definitely take a peek through. G and I watched from home and she danced along:
