2010-11-17T05:44:00.000-08:00

PITTSBURGH—A western Pennsylvania lawmaker is accused of smoking marijuana while tailgating last month outside a Pittsburgh Steelers game.
Pittsburgh police say state Rep. Paul Costa was caught sharing a marijuana cigarette with another man in the parking lot of Heinz Field on October 3. An undercover officer says he saw the Allegheny County Democrat and another man passing the joint between them.

Costa's attorney says his client adamantly denies the allegation. Phil DiLucente says Costa "detests marijuana."

Costa and the other man each face a single misdemeanor charge of engaging in prohibited acts. They face a hearing on November 24.

Routine traffic stop leads to huge marijuana bust in Richland County

2010-11-13T06:04:00.000-08:00

RICHLAND COUNTY (WIS) - Deputies with the Richland County Sheriff's Department have seized over a quarter million dollars worth of marijuana after a routine traffic stop on the interstate.

The bust happened on I-77 Wednesday night when deputies saw a car towing a cargo trailer swerving in between the northbound lanes. After pulling the car over, the deputies noticed a rolled up marijuana joint in plain view. Deputies also said the driver, 28-year-old Hector Solorio, did not have a valid driver's license

Deputies arrested Solorio and his 39-year-old brother, Heriberto Solorio, and found 2,608 pounds of marijuana in the cargo trailer. Deputies say the marijuana has a street value of $2,608,000. Investigators believe the two are brothers.

The Solorios have been charged with trafficking marijuana, driving without a license and improper lane change. They are currently being held in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The sheriff's department encourages citizens to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC if they suspect illegal activity in their neighborhood

Rapper Wiz Khalifa - Gets Busted With Marijuana Trafficking

2010-11-10T05:43:00.000-08:00

Rapper Wiz Khalifa, named MTV’s “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” was arrested Monday night following a standing room only concert at East Carolina University.

Khalifa, who is a vocal advocate for marijuana and often touts his own use, was stopped while going to his tour bus to meet his band mates. John Durham, a spokesperson for East Carolina University, stated that ECU police stopped Khalifa as he left the concert venue. According to Durham, “He was on his way with his band to his bus parked outside, and they stopped him because of a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the bus and the backstage area of the auditorium.”

Khalifia cooperated with the police and was subsequently arrested along with nine members of his entourage for three marijuana related charges. Police allegedly seized about 2 ounces of pot during the arrest.

Khalifa, born Cameron Thomaz, was booked into the Pitt County Detention Center early Tuesday morning, where he was charged with one felony count of trafficking in marijuana, one felony count of maintaining a vehicle for sale or storage of marijuana and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He quickly posted $300,000 bail and was released at 8 a.m. He was released along with one other entourage member who remains unnamed.

No indications were mentioned by police that they had found any evidence to support the trafficking allegation.

In North Carolina, possession of more than 1 1/2 ounces of marijuana is considered a felony and punishable by up to 12 months in jail. Most legal analysts don’t think the prosecutor will want to go to trial preferring to offer a plea bargain.

Khalifa tweeted to his fans that at about 11 a.m. ET, he had bailed out all of his entourage and was going to eat lunch.

NYPD Suspects in Greenwich Village Shooting of Alex Bongard, Son of NYU VP

2010-11-04T06:06:00.000-07:00

The frightened woman inside a Greenwich Village apartment when masked bandits stormed inside and shot two suspected drug dealers recalled the harrowing moment when she thought she would die.

The 27-year-old crouched in the corner of a bedroom as the men posing as customers burst into the Bleecker St. home late Monday and shot her friends - one of them the son of a top NYU fund-raiser.

"They busted the door down in the bedroom," she told the Daily News on Wednesday night. "It was the most terrifying, horrifying experience I've ever been in."

The two men demanded cash before one of them pulled out a handgun and shot both Alexander Bongard, 24, and his ex-con pal, 31-year-old Lucas Hinde, in the chest.

"I was hiding under a chair and they shot Luke," said the woman, who asked not to be identified because the bandits were still on the loose. "He was begging them not to shoot. He said he had a son."

But the heartless man fired anyway.

Hinde "walked towards the bedroom, grabbed the wall and collapsed," she said. "I saw the blood and I screamed."

She tried to cover the sound with her palm, but it was too late. The room went still.

"There's another one," she heard one hood say.

Paralyzed in fear, she expected to take a bullet until the man's partner said they had to split.

"And then they left," she said. "It was a miracle."

But first the pair grabbed the woman's handbag and stuffed it full of cash, she said.

Wednesday night, Bongard's mom, Debra LaMorte - who runs NYU's $2.6 billion development campaign - remained at her son's Bellevue Hospital bedside.

"I am only focused on two things," LaMorte said, "his making a full recovery, and the NYPD catching the gunmen who shot my son."

Bongard, a former NYU student, and Hinde are expected to survive.

Both men could face criminal charges, police said.

The blaze broke out in Lexington on Monday.

Marijuana distributor gets life in prison

2010-11-04T05:41:00.000-07:00

For three years, a Columbus man was a major link to Mexico's drug cartels, distributing tons of marijuana from central Ohio while reaping millions of dollars.

Now, Rafael Hernandez-Carillo will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Hernandez-Carillo, 31, who lived on the Northwest Side, was sentenced yesterday to life in a federal prison by U.S. District Judge James L. Graham.

A jury had convicted him in September 2009 of operating a continuing criminal enterprise.

During the trial, witnesses told of how he was responsible from 2005 through 2008 for bringing in more than 22 tons of marijuana from Sonora, Mexico. The drug was sold in central Ohio and sent to dealers in Dayton, Mansfield and Detroit.

The operation earned more than $10 million a year, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

As part of his sentencing yesterday, Hernandez-Carillo had to forfeit $263,956 in cash that was seized during the investigation, along with real estate and jewelry.

A task force that included DEA agents and detectives with the Franklin and Madison county sheriff's offices served 32 search warrants during the course of the investigation.

One of the more curious discoveries was a religious statue found in his home; one witness explained that Hernadez-Carillo displayed it because he thought it helped keep law-enforcement officers from his residence.

Hernandez-Carillo was arrested Feb. 27, 2008, at his Curtis Knoll Drive home, where investigators found most of the cash and jewelry valued at about $500,000.

Five others have been convicted for their roles in the drug operation.
