Looking for a magical way to remind loved ones how much they mean to you?

Take a note from Brad Feld, a managing director of Foundary Group. Brad spends long periods of time away from his wife and kids - and he misses them so! To battle homesickness and stay in intimate touch with loved ones, Brad gives beautiful advice that only requires a stack of index cards, a pen and stamps:

Each night, before you go to sleep, take five minutes and write a short note on an index card. Write about one special thing that happened to you that day. Draw a doodle or a picture. Tell your family that you love them. During this five minutes, think about one thing that is special about them, why you love them, and why they are important to you. Now, go to sleep. In the morning, read the card when you wake up. On your way back to the office drop the card in the mail.

After a few days a steady stream of cards will start showing up at your house far away. If you have kids, they’ll fun to the mailbox to see if something new came today. Rather than a single Skype at the end of the day, there will now be something special that shows up int he middle of the day. And - it’ll be from the past - talking about something that happened a few days ago. The connection will be through both space and time, using a media (postcard) that current generations rarely use any more.

It’s magic.

(via FeldThoughts)

Loving this. A Mad Men reading list from the NY Public Library— every book that appears in each episode.

I know what I’ll be using to fuel my spring reading in the park.

method clean happy anthem (by peopleagainstdirty)

method clean happy anthem (by peopleagainstdirty)

Las Vegas: Startup City - Businessweek

Las Vegas: Startup City - Businessweek:

Fascinating. Can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Tony Hsieh, the soft-spoken chief executive officer of shoe and apparel site Zappos.com (a division of Amazon.com) (AMZN) wants to turn the often overlooked and economically depressed downtown area into a dense urban neighborhood teeming with artists, entrepreneurs, and Internet workers. It’s one of the most unconventional redevelopment efforts in any American city, ever. Instead of soliciting public funds, Hsieh is spending $350 million of his own money to buy empty lots, seed new businesses, and subsidize schools. Next year he’ll move his company’s 1,400 local employees from suburban offices into the 11-story former City Hall (complete with jail cells on the second floor that may become meeting rooms). “What started out as a campus relocation project has evolved into a project to revitalize downtown Vegas,” Hsieh says.
