Dear SoWalScene.com Readers and Fans,

Decisions, Decisions.
Alas - it is true. I have decided to take the plunge and officially change the name of the site to SouthWaltonScene.com. This was a strategic decision I had been contemplating for the last several months and after much thought, I decided, at just over one-year-old, it was going to have to be now or never.

A few days ago, I posted that I had changed the name of SoWalDining.com to SouthWaltonDiningScene.com.

As I mentioned, one of my goals when I started these sites was to be able to reach not just those who live in South Walton and surrounding areas, but those who vacation on the Emerald Coast as well. And thanks to the amazing efforts of our Tourist Development Council, their regional, national and international marketing efforts have created a powerful brand - The Beaches of South Walton.

I have come to realize that very few visitors and those that live outside our county know where "SoWal" is.....but thousands (millions?) know where "South Walton" is. By re-branding using "South Walton" in my name, I am hoping to reach more readers and viewers and to position myself for growth I may not have been able to achieve otherwise.

If I can grow, I can bring you all more great stuff.

New Name. New Home. Same Great Site.
I have been working, working and working some more to make the transition to the new site as seamless as possible for everyone. Starting today, I am asking all my readers to head on over to the new site at www.SouthWaltonScene.com and bookmark it. If you subscribe to the site via a Reader, yes {gulp} it means I am going to have to ask you to re-subscribe. If you link to my site, it also means you will have to re-link to the new web address. I apologize for this inconvenience.

I will be keeping SoWalScene.com live indefinitely as I do not want to break any links floating around out there on the World Wide Web. But as of today, I have ceased posting new content here - all new content will be found exclusively on SouthWaltonScene.com from now on.

That about sums it up. I referred to the quotes above often over the last few weeks, to remind myself, although scary, change is necessary and, in this instance, is incredibly positive.

New “30A” App Now Available for iPhone Users

30A.com unveiled a new product especially designed for iPhone users today. The free application (or “app”) is now available for download at www.30A.com, as well as worldwide through Apple's iTunes Store.

“This is a very exciting new way for locals and visitors to stay connected with everything that 30A has to offer,” said Mike Ragsdale, the company’s founder. “It’s another great way for local businesses to reach new customers.”

The free 30A application capitalizes on iPhone's built-in GPS functionality, so users can quickly browse, research and contact the restaurants and bars that are closest to their current geographic location. They can also search specific 30A communities for dining and entertainment options.

“We’re most excited about the app’s ability to share and promote real-time event information,” said Ragsdale. “Perhaps you want to know which bands are playing live along 30A tonight, or maybe you’ve heard about some big beach bash or an art show or parade, but you're just not sure where it is or how to participate. The new 30A iPhone app has it all, right at your fingertips.”

The Spring Break 2009 crowd is beginning to infiltrate the area, the mercury is beginning to rise once again and a new batch of lifeguards have been hired and trained - it's that time again, folks ... beach time!

We all know that the beaches in South Walton county are some of the most pristine and beautiful in the world, but did you know they are also certifiably some of the cleanest in the United States through the Clean Beaches Council?

The Washington D.C-based Clean Beaches Council was formed back in '98 to act as a steward in sustaining America's beaches. Their mission is to promote public awareness and volunteer participation in sustainability while ensuring a legacy of clean beaches for all generations to come. Very admirable. {clap clap clap}

Their flagship program - the Blue Wave Campaign - is America’s first environmental beach certification program that gives those beaches that meet a set of guidelines a "certified clean beach" stamp of approval.

From the website, "A certified clean beach is a Blue Wave designated beach that is managed responsibly, with a focus on protection of human health and the environment. Blue Wave beaches voluntarily pledge to uphold the following responsible beach management practices:

What is really amazing and noteworthy is that the Beaches of South Walton is the only destination in the country to have all 26 miles of coastline certified as "Blue Wave"! Wow!

We all have a responsibility to make sure we maintain that honorable designation. It distinguishes us from any other stretch of beach coastline in the country which is just another example of why South Walton county is truly remarkable.

Here are seven things you can do to keep beaches clean and healthy.

Leave No Trace -if you carry it in, carry it out.
Use public restrooms - help keep beach water clean.
Don’t tread the dunes - prevent beach erosion / use walkovers.
Keep kids clean - wash off thoroughly after visiting the beach.
Respect native habitats - wildlife and plants
Mind your pet - help keep the beach sanitary.

► Deer Lake State Park Will Stay Open Nature lovers rejoice! If you have been following the story, then you know Deer Lake State Park on Scenic 30A in Seagrove Beach was, thanks to sweeping budget cuts, one of 19 state parks slated to close (read about it here). Well, thanks to Florida Govenor Charlie Crist recommendation and support, no state parks will be closing.

If you practice yoga and meditation in South Walton, you have heard of or know yoga enthusiast and gifted Hatha Yoga instructor Lori Klinger. A South Walton resident, Lori has been a dedicated student of yoga since 2001. She studied to become an instructor in 2004 at Dragonfly Yoga in Fort Walton Beach under Laura Tyree and has her 200hr Yoga Alliance certification. Since that time, she has been channeling her passion for yoga through teaching and has recently began to offer Yoga Retreats, the first of which is scheduled to be held in Grayton Beach in May (Read about it here.) Lori is also currently working toward her Anusara Teaching Certification with Amy Ippoliti. Her passion for yoga is evident on and off her mat and she inspires her students to celebrate their true divine nature. How long have you lived in South Walton?

After visiting the area for ten plus years, our family took the plunge in May of 2002. A big leap of faith on our part, and it has all worked out beautifully...undoubtedly, the best decision we have ever made.

You were born and raised in....?

I was born and raised in East Texas--Longview to be exact. A small town that I was itchin' to get out of, but have come to appreciate as a nice place to raise a family.

You already live at the beach - where do you vacation?

Funny that we live at the beach AND vacation to the beach! We own a home in Eleuthera, Bahamas...a remote and very magical island. The people make it so special. They are pure to the core. It is truly like going back in time a hundred years. It is very close to my heart...and feels like "coming home" each time we visit.

What book(s) is on your nightstand?

The Presence Process by Michael Brown, Meditations from the Mat by Rolf Gates, and John Friend's Anusara manual to name a few...it is ridiculous how many books I read simultaneously!

If you were to come back as someone else, who would you be?

My Bahamian rescue dog Coco, because she is so loved and so lucky and happens to be very enlightened :)

What is your single greatest achievement so far?

Turns out I am an excellent Mom and the only reason I can be sure of this is that I have two beautiful children with the biggest hearts on the planet to show for it. They are truly amazing kids.

What is your favorite restaurant in South Walton?

I don't eat out much...but Jambone has made me a pork eater again...the pork tacos are insane. If you haven't tried them and can handle adding another vice to your life, then try them. Who would have ever thought I'd get my "mexican food" fix at a BBQ joint?

What 2 things can you not live without?

Facebook and chocolate??? :) HA!

Seriously, I could most likely live without most everything I have, but I wouldn't WANT to live without the support and love of my friends (that includes my family)...I am convinced that I have the greatest friends ever. They really raise me up. I feel like I could do anything with their support. Anything!

The other would have to be the water. I don't think after being here and enjoying the healing qualities and beauty of the Gulf that I could ever be landlocked again.

What would you do if you won $1 million?

My philanthropic nature would probably not allow me to keep much of it...I would splurge a tad and would buy my son a half pipe, and go on a shopping spree with my daughter and after traveling a bit with my family, I would give to charities that are close to my heart.

If you could change one thing about yourself, it would be...

Probably my "balls to the wall" attitude with all of my undertakings...My passion for things that I love fuels this insanity! I have to work very hard to slow down and allow things to unfold naturally...to understand that most things are a process and that the process can be the sweetest part, if I let it. Not to mention the missed opportunities and burn out potential of working overtime to accelerate it! Thank God for yoga! :)

You are granted one wish. What is it?

That everyone in the world could be touched by yoga...so that everyone could know how fabulous they are...raising the vibration one downward dog at a time :)

The best thing about South Walton is....

The community...the cohesiveness...the support...the feeling of knowing that others have your back. I genuinely believe that this community would hold me up if the need was ever there, and there is a lot of comfort in that. And for my children...the fact that they are able to grow up here and can safely go and do and explore and be free, like children should be able to do, is priceless.

Oh, and the beaches aren't bad either ;)

What is the greatest love in your life?

Yoga. It IS life. It is all encompassing...it includes my husband, my children, my work, my passions, my guitar, my self-discovery, my goals, my creativity...it is divine love and ecstatic earthly experiences combined. I feel the most like myself when I am on my yoga mat and coming back to it reminds me how to go out and live in the world applying all the beautiful principles that yoga is built upon. It makes me whole.

What are the most important qualities in a friend?

I have found that friendship can really blossom into soul connections when authenticity abounds. Lots of truth and vulnerability combined with compassion and support...and someone that brings out and helps you celebrate the truest version of yourself. True friends are people that you can be "uncool" around and they love you even more!

Would you say happiness is found or made?

I would say neither....happiness is revealed as we work thru the unveiling of the many layers that we accumulate thru life... It's already inside of us and all around us, we just have to open to it...to allow it...to say YES to it!

Congrats to Stacey Brady, the New Director of Communications for Grand Boulevard at Sandestin Stacy will oversee marketing, public relations and tenant relations for the Grand Boulevard at Sandestin in South Walton County. South Walton is Mother Nature's wonderland. Really. Choke full of ecological treasures, we are spoiled rotten when it comes to natural beauty - from the characteristic nearly pure quartz white sand on our beaches that literally squeaks under your feet and doesn't ever get too hot to walk on, to the fifteen rare coastal dune lakes found only in four other places worldwide. (see video below). Throw in the fact that close to 40% - a staggering 56,000+/- acres - of South Walton is designated state park land (Read: Protected Land) and it's pretty apparent that it is imperative those who live here embrace the importance of being good stewards.

Enter the South Walton Community Council (SWCC). Founded in 1995, SWCC is a nonpartisan non-profit comprised of those with a vested interested in preserving, protecting and enhancing the unique quality of life and natural environment in South Walton county.

Also Coming to the Ogden: Family of Artists Showcase Their Diverse Styles March 20 The Ogden Museum of Southern Art @ WaterColor will kick off the 2009 spring season on March 20 with the exhibition “Dunlap, Burgess, Dunlap: Two Generations of Southern Artists.” The exhibit will feature a range of paintings, drawings and related works by nationally renowned artists William Dunlap, his wife Linda Burgess and their daughter Maggie Dunlap. The trio has recently shown their work at The Cedars in Jackson, Mississippi, and Soren Christensen Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Also to note - the museum will be re-opening to the public on March 13. Hours are: Spring and Fall: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Wednesday. Summer: Seven days, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 850.231.0038.

Cornerstone Marketing & Advertising, Inc., publisher of VIE, was recognized by the Emerald Coast Advertising Federation for advertising excellence at the 2009 ADDY Awards & Gala on Saturday, February 28th at the Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village in Destin, Florida.

Cornerstone won 37 ADDY Awards – 10 Gold, including 1 Judge’s Choice Award, and 27 Silver. Taking home the most awards and the most golds, it was certainly a successful night for Cornerstone’s The Idea Boutique.

The 10 Gold ADDYS awarded to Cornerstone were won for three local businesses –

Café Thirty-A and
VIE – People + Places magazine

- and one non-local business - North Carolina-based Sky Carolina.

Strategic Decision:
I have decided to make a H.U.G.E. strategic decision and have officially changed the name from "SoWal Dining" to "South Walton Dining Scene".

One of my goals when I started SoWalDining.com was to be able to reach not just those who live here, but those who vacation here as well. And thanks to the amazing efforts of our TDC, their national and international marketing efforts have created a powerful brand - The Beaches of South Walton. I have come to realize that very few visitors know where "SoWal" is - but thousands (millions?) know where "South Walton" is. By changing my name, I am hoping to reach more readers and viewers.

Wondering where the Hip Happenings are in South Walton this weekend? You've come to the right spot. TGIF, folks! Time to get out and have some fun at the beach!

▪ FRIDAY ▪

The communities of Seaside and Alys Beach will celebrate Art Miles all weekend. From 5-8 p.m. murals and a replica of the Art Miles pyramid display will be exhibited throughout Seaside as part of the First Friday Art Walk festivities. Alys Beach will exhibit Art Miles murals in the courtyard of the Fonville Press as part of its Apres Beach event. From 8-10 p.m. Amavida Coffee in Seaside will host a screening of the film, “Black Gold.” In Rosemary Beach, World Six Gallery will host a community painting event from 4-7pm where a Peace mural will be created.

▪ SATURDAY ▪

Seaside will offer a community yoga class with Johannes Linstead, one of the world’s top guitarists and a certified Kundalini Yoga instructor, on the beach in Seaside.on the beach at 8 a.m., a tasting of an Art Miles fair trade coffee blend at Amavida Coffee in Seaside throughout the day and a Fairy Tale mural painting in Ruskin Place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Art Miles Concert: World Music begins at 2 p.m. in the Seaside amphitheater. Joanne and Fouad Tawfilis will share their story and renowned classical guitarist Johannes Linstead, the Seaside Neighborhood School Band and 30A Radio will have everyone dancing. Seaside will exhibit over 40 murals throughout the town.

Mural Painting at WaterColor's Town Center and Cerulean Park Come on out from noon to 3pm and help paint a mural that will have a 'Celebrate Our Sea Turtles' theme (an Art Miles Mural Project event). Local artist Sally Pallowski will sketch the turtles for the mural, Nonie’s Ark will be there from 12:30 to 1:30 with several live turtles for folks to ‘meet’, a representative from the Flashlight Cover organization will be on hand to pass out flashlight covers to use on the beach at night and educate people on the importance of this practice to the sea turtles that nest along our beaches and local favorite, Reed Waddle, will play live from 12 pm to 3 pm.
