The most common of the species is Conium maculatum (Hemlock or Poison Hemlock) it is native to the Mediterranean and to Europe. Caerophylloides is the species native to southern Africa.

Poison Hemlock is the most common and the one which everyone is most familiar with from history, the movies and television shows. It is most commonly used for executing people. The plant grows to five to eight feet tall. The leaves look like carrot leaves being triangular, lacy and finely divided in shape.

If you crush the leaves the odor is very pungent and smells much like mice or parsnips.

Hemlocks main toxic ingredient is coniine which has a very similar structure chemically to nicotine. Coniine (a neurotoxin) causes disruption to our central nervous systems leading to respiratory failure and death.

The most famous historical execution with hemlock was the the poisoning of the philosopher Socrates in 399 BC .

Over the years Poison Hemlock has accumulated a lot of interesting names:

Poison Parsely

Devils’ Porridge (Ireland)

Beaver Poison

A series of 3 fatal goonch catfish attacks in villages on the River Kali in India between 1998 and 2007 occurred. Biologists were able to verify the stories after capturing a live specimen.

Why eat humans? The creature had probably developed a taste for human flesh from burnt human cremation remains. Also eating off all the cremation remains allows these creatures to grow very massive.

Definition Of Sehnsucht

Sehnsucht is a German word that means "longing" or something that is “intensely missing”. Life-longings. It’s a difficult word to describe as it involves a very deep emotional state.

The word was first used to describes cows giving birth to unformed embryos (a moon calf). Superstition attributed the defects to the influence of the moon, thus the name moon-calf.

Bill O’Reilly asked thousands of viewers to lookup up the word “mooncalf” on his Fox TV Segment. A very strange request.

So What is a Coconut Crab?

Coconut crabs are land living anthropoids – the largest in the word. They can weigh up to 10lbs. They have a leg span of up to 1m. Scientists believe that Coconut crabs have reached the limits that land dwelling animals with exoskeletons can achieve in our Earth’s atmosphere. There are much larger crabs in the sea because in this case their weight is supported by the water.

Coconut crabs live in costal forests of many Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean islands (e.g. Christmas, Seychelles, Cook ..). They emerge at night to forage on coconuts. They have very strong pincers which are able to crack coconuts, which enables them to retrieve the contents. They are scavengers by nature and will consume anything from dead animals to tortoise hatchlings.

Coconut crabs can climb trees to retrieve coconuts and also to escape the heat and predators but tend to pull their food into burrows which is safer while eating.
