Wolfe appeared in dozens of novels and novellas for over four decades.

Wolfe, a well known private detective, weighs "a seventh of a ton" (about 286 pounds or 130 kg), and is 5'11" tall.

Wolfe, an amateur orchid grower, raises his plants in a roof-top greenhouse in his New York City brownstone on West 35th Street, where he employs three live-in staff:

Theodore Horstmann, an orchid nurse who assists Wolfe in the plant rooms.

Fritz Brenner, an exceptionally talented cook who prepares and serves all of Wolfe's meals and acts as the household's majordomo. In his room, Fritz keeps 289 cookbooks, as well as busts of Escoffier and Brillat-Savarin.

Archie Goodwin, occasionally referred to by the New York newspapers as "Nero Wolfe's legman." Like Wolfe, Archie is a licensed private detective, and is expected to handle all investigation that takes place outside the brownstone. He is also the narrator of the Wolfe adventures, and many reviewers and critics regard Archie as the stories' true protagonist. Compared to Wolfe, Goodwin is the man of action: tough, street smart, and passionate. His narrative style is breezy and vivid.

We're launching the new Soap Detectives site with The case of the careless cleaner.

Podcast
