As I read the book, drawn into each personal account of how God interacted or interceded in their lives at critical points, I was struck by the notion that “Why God Matters" would be a great companion to take to a Holy Hour of Adoration.

The major premise of the book is that faith is to be lived. Not just for an hour on Sunday and sequestered the rest of the week, but consciously lived in all areas great and small. If you listen to the "still, small voice" that God uses to speak to His people, you will learn to recognize Him in your daily activities.

Another premise is that faith is most especially to be handed down to the next generation. It is an inheritance that must be nurtured and "watered" as if it were a seed to spring into growth at an opportune time later in life. In fact, the soul is likened to a seed, the "seed of eternity." So, in essence, the soul and faith are inextricably linked. Faith is an ongoing daily process of conversion. "Spiritual progress", if you wish to use that term. It is a lifelong journey wherein we learn to breathe in Christ's breath, and gradually grow in Christ.

The personal stories clearly illustrate these premises. Each story is from an episode in the lives of Fabian and Lumbert, about how God involved Himself in the major and the seemingly "small" events in their lives, and how their Faith was influenced and grew in response.

That God is present and intervenes in the "little areas" of life is a comfort to all of us. He is not only present during the obvious major happenings in life, but also in the less-than-obvious times where He quietly makes Himself known.

God is there, answering the most "meager of prayers", and is present not only in the darkest of days but also in those times when you are deluged by the most trivial of oppressions (when everything seems to be going wrong and all is conspiring against you). It is during these times that God sometimes makes the biggest impact.

I very much recommend this book to readers of Sober Catholic. Many of the book's "Life Lessons" caused me to go back a re-read the chapter as they gave a deeper insight into the story. That is a lesson in itself. As the readers of Sober Catholic are affected by recovery from one sort of addiction or another, this book is a wonderful guide to spiritual progression.

For further information, here are the following links:

The book's website: Why God Matters: How to Recognize Him in Daily Life by Karina Lumbert Fabian and Deacon Steven Lumbert

To buy it through Amazon, click: Amazon.com

Karina Fabian's Blog: FabianspaceNOTE: to any new readers of this blog due to this book review: Sober Catholic is located at a new website address: http://www.sobercatholic.com , or click here . From here on forward "Sober Catholic" will be found here: Sober Catholic or http://www.sobercatholic.com if the link doesn't show. If you are a "follower" of this blog, please read this: Just a post for "Followers" of Sober Catholic. If you have a blog that includes Sober Catholic amongst your links on it, please change it. Thank you!

I will continue to post at this old location for a week or so, then cease. The last post will be a "CLOSED" sort of announcement, for any stragglers. This blog is over 3 1/2 years old, and Lord only knows after all this time who from where is linking to what or even whether anymore. :-)

Thank you very much. In case anyone is wondering, I made today the "official" date to give me time to move all the blogrolls, links and stuff over to the new site. Plus, the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross is a good day for a new start! I think the only things left to move are blog directories. And I'm not sure how useful they are. There are some photos to be moved, but as of now, I am not sure how to upload them to the new blog's sidebar. But as of now, all the basic necessities are over at Sober Catholic.

See you there!

This Feast is also known as the "Triumph of the Cross" and is celebrated on September 14th. It also serves as the conclusion of the "Little Lent" we've been observing as the Feast is 40 days after the Transfiguration. See here: "Second" Lent!

Here is a copy and paste of the Novena prayer, taken from her blog: Dymphna's Well: Exaltation of the Holy Cross Novena:

"Jesus, Who because of Your burning love for us willed to be crucified and to shed Your Most Precious Blood for the redemption and salvation of our souls, look down upon us and grant the petition we ask for ...( mention here)

We trust completely in Your Mercy.

Cleanse us from sin by Your Grace,
sanctify our work,
give us and all those who are dear to us our daily bread, lighten the burden of our sufferings,
bless our families,
and grant to the nations, so sorely afflicted,
Your Peace, which is the only true peace, so that by obeying Your Commandments we may come at last to the glory of Heaven. "

Please recite it daily (I won't be posting it daily, I will just leave it up as I will be not blogging during the Novena. I will instead be busy making "renovations" at this blog's new online location here: Sober Catholic. September 14th and 15th will be the "launch date" for Sober Catholic's new home. I need to finish up moving links and adding whatever functions I need to have running there.

I did, and I felt it justified my seeking out my Catholic faith and what it had to offer for alcoholism in my very early days of recovery. I was going to do it anyway, but it provided some needed support as early on I discovered the bias against organized religion (i.e. the Catholic Church).

My interpretation is probably taken out of context from whatever Jeremiah meant, but seeking out the ancient Faith of Catholicism with all its history of saints, miracles, healing and holiness was an obvious thing to turn to to shore up the shallow spirituality that is Twelve Steps.

The Catholic Faith is the sure road to Salvation.

Gone missing are all the years when we were trapped in our addictions. We can learn from them and vow to never repeat those mistakes, assuming we've learned from them, but there is still the nagging sense of loss over those years.

No matter how we have turned our recovery into gain and made the most of our second chance (or third, or fourth), we wonder "What might have been?"

Shadowlands has a nice prayer in her sidebar. I've blogged about it before, but I searched for the link and it is no longer found at the original site ("Spirit Daily", if you must know.) I'm glad I've found it now on her blog. It is a "Prayer to Redeem Lost Time", and saying it is comforting:

"Prayer to Redeem Lost Time"O MY GOD! Source of all mercy! I acknowledge Thy sovereign power. While recalling the wasted years that are past, I believe that Thou, Lord, can in an instant turn this loss to gain. Miserable as I am, yet I firmly believe that Thou can do all things. Please restore to me the time lost, giving me Thy grace, both now and the future, that I may appear before Thee in "wedding garments." Amen.
(Via Living in the Shadowlands.)

Nature walks and exploration, along with prayer and going to Churches, are my personal methods for "going outside to get outside" so, I have a soft spot in my heart for these portfolios of hers.

In addition to tabs and links to her portfolios, she is also attempting to develop an online community. The "Forums" section of her site has dedicated sections for Catholic Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, as well as other charitable service and volunteering topics. Not to mention a nice section for artists to gather, discuss things and get to know each other.

Her work is offered for sale, with links to external sites that hosts some of her projects. She adds new artwork often.

Please take a moment to explore her site! Anything that connects you to God helps you to stay away from your addiction. Art that is done well, whether it is photography or painting, assists in that.

It is not simply yet another "worship service" like the Protestants have. The Mass is a union of Heaven and Earth, where the Last Supper is presented again and the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary is ongoing, from across time and space. There is only "one sacrifice", and Jesus did it, but it is continued from 2,000 years ago at every Catholic Mass.

When you are at a Catholic Mass, it is as if you are present at the Last Supper and are at the foot of the Cross with Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the others.

Bryan's artistic endeavor attempts to, well, illustrate this reality through a series of paintings. He needs funding to do this and to that end is requesting donations through the Kickstarter Project. Kickstarter is a way form people to obtain funding and patronage for the works.

Bryan has about 17 days left to raise the money needed and has a long ways to go to accomplish this. Hence, I am blogging about the project here and am asking that you take a look at the site: The Mystical "Magical" "Real-life Sci-fi" Mysteries of the Catholic Mass and please consider contributing.

This may be the first of a series of posts on Catholic art. Art, either the creation or appreciation of, is to me a form of spiritual development as good art takes you outside yourself and connects you to God.

I will also be using WordPress for templates and some blog administration.

I have no issues with Blogger or even Google. The opportunity arose for me to get a web address for this blog and I took it. Therefore I decided to use a different blogging service that fits in well with my new host. There is a steeper learner curve (for me, at least) with WordPress, but they offer more flexibility for site design and functions. Having my own host and my own domain frees me from the fear that someone can "flag" or "report" my blog for spam or "offensiveness" if they don't like what I write. It has never happened to me, but there is always a first time. From what I've heard from other bloggers, it can be difficult (as in time-consuming) to convince a free hoster that your blog isn't a spam or a porn site.

I will give all readers plenty of notice before ceasing to post to this blog. All posts and most comments have already been exported to the new blog. All I have to do is work on getting the blogrolls and link lists up and running. Some of those are already listed. The rest will be done by month's end.

I will continue to post both here and at the new location, which is here, or if the link isn't viewable, go to http://www.sobercatholic.com . With my Mac'sblog editor I can post to both sites almost at once. I will keep doing this until I am certain that most readers know of the new web address.

So, please change your bookmarks to this, or http://www.sobercatholic.com . You can already subscribe to new posts and even comments at the new site (upper right corner). I hope that by the end of the month the transition will be complete and I can stop posting here.

Speaking of comments, please DO NOT post comments any longer to this original site (the one with the word "blogspot" in the address.) Instead, for those wishing to comment, please just start using the new address. I just got done importing things, I had to do it twice because an importer from Blogger to WordPress no longer works, and it is a real pain to do the importing again. Any comments posted after 10:30 AM, Eastern United States Time, (which is I think 1430 GMT/UTC) will not be carried over to the new site. Thanks!

Page 83 of AA's "Big Book" has as one of the "Twelve Promises": "We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it."

We do not let the past and our emotional connections to it govern us, but we do not ignore it or disconnect from it either. In our "not regretting the past" we also remember it so as to learn from it and not repeat its mistakes.

Mary Beth Bonacci, a wonderful Catholic writer and speaker, has written an article that speaks very much to this.

She makes two points among many that I want to bring to your attention. The first one in which she says that wallowing around in the past is "self-defeating and, in the spiritual realm, I believe it’s a real temptation of the devil that holds us down and keeps us from accomplishing great things."

This is something I have been mulling over recently, especially when reading other bloggers or Facebook friends talk about negative situations going on in their lives and how it is a struggle to overcome them. The temptation is there to just give up. In my own struggles I have arrived at the belief that Satan is keenly intent on preventing us from realizing our full potential, and that by encouraging doubt and obsession with the past he is hindering us from growing into the people we can be.

The second point is:

But the “no regrets” philosophy often goes one step further. It says “If I had it to do over again, I’d do exactly the same thing, because that’s what made me the person I am today.”

Now this point struck home because in AA meetings I have heard it said by a member that if they had to choose a disease, alcoholism would have been it, due to the changes that recovery has wrought in their life. I have also felt this way, that my addiction and recovery have made me the person I am today, and in doing so they have enabled me to see the flaws in my life and correct them. There is still work to be done, but the willingness is there. I was dealt certain cards, I turned them back in and I played a new hand after a fair amount of re-shuffling. I think I would have preferred to have been dealt the hand that lacked the cards for "I want what I want, and I want it NOW!" and the lack of drive and determination to struggle and sacrifice to obtain what I wanted.

Mary Beth however points out that there was a whole lot of pain and suffering involved in many people's pasts and that those who would chose to do it all over again the same way are being selfish and defiant of God's will.

The questions that arose in my mind as I read her thesis are:

Do we then mean that we are willing to subject others to the pain we caused them in order for us to be the people we are today?

Are others willing to be subjected to it?

What right do we have to sacrifice their serenity and sanity for us to become the fabulously wonderful people we are today?

My conscience had difficulty with the notion that who I am today is because of alcoholism and my recovery from it. Granted this is true but it touches upon why certain people are addicts and what God's plan is in all of that.

Why are some people addicts and others are not? It is beyond the scope of this post to debate this, but I may tackle it in the future after more research. One can always rely on the Catholic belief, going back to either St. Francis DeSales or St. Ignatius Loyola, that things like "alcoholism" or "addiction" are "inordinate attractions."

For whatever the reason or cause, be it genetic, environmental, upbringing or inability to cope with things that can be habitual, some people have a difficult time with alcohol, drugs and other things. Successfully overcoming them and relegating them to their proper place in life is important, but we must also be humbly aware that perhaps we may or may not have been "meant to be" alcoholics and addicts, and that we have only been given a second chance.

Mary Beth makes numerous other points about God's place in our lives and our relationship with Him, all hinging upon our wills and how humble we are in submitting them to God.

Read the entire article here:

See: No Regrets

All links are via Real Love.

He came to us to heal us of our afflictions and to redeem us from our sins. Mere human methods can help us, at least from the outset and perhaps occasionally afterwards in certain situations. But only Jesus, through the Sacraments He established in His Church, can give us the lasting healing from that which plagues us.

Twelve Step programs speak of "HOW", which means "Honesty, Open-mindedness, and Willingness" as the key to a successful recovery. Honesty with yourself and others, an openness to working the program fully, and a willingness to do whatever it takes by the program's offerings. A similar thing is a part of accepting Jesus and His Church as your healer.

The "HOW" can be the Humility needed to submit to God's will in all areas of your life so He can lead you to the healing you crave; the Openness to God's graces flowing forth from the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Confession; and the Willingness to live according to the Gospels.

With faith believe in the healing power of Jesus and the Sacraments and be humble, open and willing to accept it. Miracles happen.

The Triumph of the Cross is the victory of His Resurrection. The fact that these days were placed 40 days apart on the liturgical calendar affords us the opportunity to practice "another Lent." We mark the season of His Passion, starting with the "spiritual courage" of the Transfiguration and culminating in His victory over sin and death by His Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Don't miss this opportunity for spiritual development. This is an excellent time for prayer and introspection geared towards ridding oneself of character defects. Perhaps you can take your Bible and read daily from the four Gospels all of the accounts of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Just a few minutes each day. Even re-reading them can help you pull greater meaning from the passages.

So, if your Lenten pilgrimage this year wasn't satisfying, take advantage of this "do-over." We belong to a Church of Second Chances.
