Head of Russian Bid Defends Racism Record
A little over a week ago I posted my opinion that FIFA should pass Russia over as a World Cup host due to a racist banner that flew at Lokomotiv Moscow's stadium. I'll admit that my reaction was visceral, and that I didn't not have a full sense of racism's place in Russian soccer when I wrote it.

It's official. Merritt Paulson announced at the airport today that the Timbers will have Alaska Airlines on their kits. Once again the rumors turned out to be correct, so maybe the old saying don't believe everything you hear is wrong when it comes to the Timbers and MLS.

On this week's List of the Week, I thought I'd bring you something simple and that can be found in multiple places, but still is asked about all of the time.

Our new signing, Bebe, is currently with the Portugal U-21 squad and has impressed in training.

Jorge Paxaio, Bebe's coach at former club Estrela, has spoken very fondly of our new player, although is wary of what effect his rags to riches background may have.

‘Manchester United are getting a truly remarkable kid," he said.

Chelsea star Michael Essien has laid the marker down to his club's opponents, cautioning that Carlo Ancelotti and his men are eyeing Champions League success. UEFA's highest club honor has eluded the Blues to this point, but with what appears to be their best squad ever, Essien believes they can win any competition they enter.

What Now for DC United?
DC United's 2010 effectively ended last night. United fell to Columbus in the semifinals of the US Open Cup in front of 3400 fans at RFK stadium, and while the organization is none too happy with the quality of the referee for the match, their grousing won't change anything. United will now simply finish out their MLS schedule while understandably looking ahead to 2011.

New England Revolution's attempts at winning the North American SuperLiga title for a second time were dashed on Wednesday as they were defeated at home by Mexican opponents Monarcas Morelia by two goals to one in front of a disappointing 10,000 crowd. The Revs had previously won the competition two years earlier having beaten compatriots Houston Dynamo in a penalty shoot-out but any repeat of that triumph was put to the sword after Morelia left the American hosts with too much to do after taking a two goal lead in this game.

by Nick Lichtenberg, writing from a couch in New York City (okay, Brooklyn)
1) Dimitar Berbatov reminds me of Steve Nash.

Nobody would mistake Dimitar Berbatov for an inspirational league MVP. But a few years ago, Phoenix Suns' point guard (and Tottenham supporter) Steve Nash was still in search of his first NBA title.

In Women's Professional Soccer, parity is often the name of the game, and things were no different on Wednesday night at Yurcak Field in New Jersey. FC Gold Pride came to the Garden State to take on Sky Blue FC in the final regular season edition of "The Battle of Teams That Choose to Not Identify Geographically".

Once upon a time REAL MADRID had six Dutch players in their squad for a cost of 123M€ paid to have their services. Today, & with the departure of Rafael Van Ver Vaart to Tottenham, the number of Dutch players in the team is zero.To get to that zero, Real Madrid sold them for a price of 63M€ (- 60M€ loss) & Drenthe loaned out to Spanish Club Hercules.

This past week Enos "Stan" Kroenke's purchase of a majority stake in the St. Louis Rams was approved by the National Football League. NFL rules prohibit an owner from having a majority stake in a football team in one city and a team from another sport in another city, so Kroenke was forced to transfer operating control whilst winking of the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche to his son, Nepos.
