Sir Alex Ferguson has promised that Manchester United will go for broke next Tuesday at Old Trafford in search of a Champions League final place.

The semi-final against Barcelona is finely balanced after a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Nou Camp, with Cristiano Ronaldo`s penalty miss after three minutes depriving United of a precious away goal.

Ronaldo fired high and wide and was left frustrated after failing in his bid to improve on his remarkable 38-goal tally.

Barcelona soon recovered from that scare and had the majority of possession but failed to hurt United.

Asked if his side would be more aggressive in the return match, United boss Ferguson said: 'Absolutely, no question about that. The game now starts at Old Trafford - it's the deciding game.

'A scoring draw and we're out, a loss and we're out, but the big bonus is that if we win we are through to the final. At Old Trafford, with the atmosphere, it will be quite different to this game.

'Barcelona have a lot of possession in all games, especially at home, and I am satisfied with the clean sheet - it was a professional performance.'

Ronaldo, who insisted he did not alter his penalty-taking technique, vowed to make amends in the second leg.

'I didn't change,' he said on Sky Sports 2. 'I scored a few penalties in that side but today I didn't score - no problem. Now I'm going to score in Manchester.'

Ronaldo insisted he should have been awarded a second penalty later in the first half when he was bundled over by Rafael Marquez.

'I think he touched me,' he said. 'But the referee didn't give a penalty. I don't know why, I don't understand.'

Ronaldo added: 'It was a tough game. Barcelona played very well, they kept the ball a lot. But I think we defended well, we played well as well; 0-0 is a good result.'

Ferguson revealed that Nemanja Vidic is likely to miss the Barclays Premier League title showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The defender received hospital treatment for a stomach problem and was forced to miss the match in Spain.

In his absence, Wes Brown partnered Rio Ferdinand in central defence and the pair were rock solid as Barcelona sprayed the ball around trying in vain to find a way through.

'Nemanja went 24, 36 hours without eating,' Ferguson said. 'I don't think he'll be ready for Saturday - that's the situation, it's a stomach infection.

'Before training yesterday, he had very severe stomach pains, so we sent him off to a hospital only about a mile away.

'We felt that was the best place for him to go. He was kept in until late at night and then they let him go.'

Arsene Wenger is at a loss to explain how Arsenal failed to win their Champions League quarter-final first leg at home to Liverpool - but he is confident his men can finish the job at Anfield next week.

The Gunners, who have seen their Premier League title hopes fade following a run of just one win in six, took an early lead through Emmanuel Adebayor last night.

But the Reds, last season's beaten finalists, hit back quickly through Dirk Kuyt's close-range effort after a fine run from captain Steven Gerrard.

Arsenal dominated the second half, their defence comfortably shackling what threat was posed by in-form Spain striker Fernando Torres - and the hosts should have had a penalty when Alexander Hleb appeared to be clearly tugged back by Kuyt, only for the claims to be waved away by Dutch referee Pieter Vink.

Wenger's men could not find a way past Liverpool - who will now fancy their chances of securing another European Cup semi-final appearance when the two sides meet again at Anfield next Tuesday.

'It is difficult to understand how we did not win the game, because we had a lot of possession and a lot of chances,' said Wenger, whose side will first meet Liverpool once more in the Premier League on Saturday.

'We were a bit unlucky as well with a big decision of the referee on the penalty. It's difficult to take, but we have to swallow it.

'Sometimes the referee is in a bad position but he was five yards away from Kuyt, and it was 100% a blatant penalty.'

Wenger has little doubt Arsenal were the better team.

'I feel we were not rewarded for what we produced - and we had the chances to win it,' he said.

'Liverpool created very little, and the whole second half was played in one half.

'If you look at our amount of possession compared to Liverpool, it is frightening that we could only come out of it with a 1-1.

'It will be a test now for us in the second leg, but we have the desire to do it.

'However, before that we have a championship game - and that might take more out of us than this game.

'It is now a little bit of a survival battle - the one who is still good after three games is the one who is the better team.'

Wenger revealed forward Robin van Persie is a doubt for Saturday's lunchtime kick-off, having been replaced by Theo Walcott at half-time because of a thigh problem.

'We had to take him out as a precaution,' said the Arsenal manager.

'It doesn't look too bad, but we think he may be short for the next game.

'We will see how it goes. I don't think it's a recurrence but it was where he was injured before, on his thigh, where he had the problem.

Ronaldo de Assís Moreira, commonly known as Ronaldinho (born March 21, 1980 in Porto Alegre), is a football player from Brazil. He became a naturalized Spanish citizen in January 2007.

Ronaldinho (pronounced [χonawˈdʒĩɲu]), meaning "little Ronaldo", is better known in Brazil by the nickname Ronaldinho Gaúcho, in order to distinguish him from Ronaldo (already called Ronaldinho in Brazil). Lionel Andrés Messi (born 24 June 1987 in Rosario) is an Argentine international footballer who currently plays for FC Barcelona in the Primera División, and for the Argentine national team. He has drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, and indeed Maradona himself named Messi his "successor".

Once again, El Clásico saw Messi in top form, scoring a hat-trick to earn 10-man Barcelona a 3-3 draw, equalising thrice and with the final goal coming in injury time. In doing so he became the first player since Iván Zamorano (for Real Madrid in the 1994-95 season) and the first Barcelona player since Romario(1993-94 season) to hit a hat-trick in the El Clásico. Messi is also the youngest player ever to have scored in this fixture. The game also marked the beginning of Messi's best spell of form with Barça. He also began finding the net more often, 11 of his 14 league goals for the season coming from the last 13 games. Despite his spirited efforts, Barcelona felt marginally short in its defence of the La Liga title, Real Madrid winning on a better head-to-head record.

Messi also proved the 'new Maradona' tag was not all hype, by near-replicating both of Maradona's most famous goals (the two against England in the 1986 World Cup) in the space of the single season. On April 18, 2007, he scored two goals during a Copa del Rey semi-final against Getafe CF, one of which was very similar to Maradona's famous goal against England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, known as the Goal of the Century.[32]. The world's sports press exploded with Maradona comparisons, and the Spanish press labelled Messi as "Messidona".
