And so a game between these two has lost its high profile. But while this clash may not bring the established players in the way it used to, there still is plenty enough talent to keep an eye on. League leaders PSV Eindhoven(14 played, 33 points) boast the likes of Dutch international players like Luciano Narsingh, Kevin Strootman, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jeremain Lens and Jetro Willems and due to their tender age, one can only assume these men are on their way to something bigger. Together with Belgian winger Dries (Haha I broke your nose Gary Cahill) Mertens and nurtured by the experienced Mark van Bommel and Wilfred Bouma, it’s a rather attractive side to watch. While managed by Dick Advocaat, the team is scoring freely, finding the net 49 times already this season.

Advocaat’s opponent this Saturday, young Frank de Boer, who has made a storming start to his managerial career, has a squad dominated by young talent as well. Fourth placed home-side Ajax (14 played, 27 points) have newly-capped Dutch international Kenneth Vermeer on goal and international Ricardo van Rhijn as right back while Siem De Jong and Danny Blind were included in Louis van Gaals Dutch national squad against Germany. The former companion of Jan Vertonghen, Belgium’s Toby Alderweireld is still going strong in central defence. But perhaps most eye-catching are the two Danish Diamonds that Ajax possess. First and foremost 20-year old attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen, who despite his young age already has two major international tournaments under his belt. The other is Viktor Fischer (18), who has impressed in the aforementioned Next Gen Series and scored two for Ajax in the first Eredivisie-game he started, followed up by his first minutes for the Danish national side. Oh, Danish team-mate and former Liverpool-player Christian Poulsen is joining the party as well, the veteran has been rather influential this season, both positive and negative.

While this game may not have the glamour it used to have, the top prospects of both teams are still likely to make an impact on the bigger stage. Talents on their way to a bigger claim to fame. Instead of watching a blockbuster-movie, it’s like watching a low-budget one with some of the actors soon to be seen in cinemas nearby.

Ajax – PSV will kick-off on Sunday the 1st of December,  20:45 local time

We kunnen ons allemaal nog wel herinneren hoe hij zijn eerste goal vierde in het shirt van Oranje tegen de Hongaren. Arme Louis, nog herstellende van een heupoperatie,  zag daar opeens in de verte een grote gozer aankomen rennen die steeds sneller dichterbij kwam. Doordat Louis niet meer zo snel is, zag hij het onheil ook al snel aankomen natuurlijk. Bruno sprong hem in de armen en Louis knakte als een boompje dat door een bulldozer omver wordt gereden.

Ik kon dit wel waarderen, niet zo zeer dat die jongen Louis vloerde, wat al grappig was, maar dat er eindelijk weer iemand uitbundig een goal viert. Hij werd overmand door de emoties van het scoren van een goal. De adrenaline gierde door zijn lichaam, fantastisch.

Een paar weken later, vroeg Bruno, tijdens een wedstrijd van Feyenoord: ‘Coach, mag ik mee naar voren?’ Nadat hij een bevestigend antwoord had gekregen van de coach stormde hij naar voren om daar in de laatste minuut nog een punt veilig te stellen voor Feyenoord. Ook nu rende hij naar de coach. Het was jammer dat je hier al zag dat hij had ‘geleerd’ van het eerdere incident. Hij rende op Koeman af, remde op tijd en gaf hem alleen een dikke knuffel. Nog steeds leuk en spontaan.

Toen Bruno gister de vrije trap intikte die van de voet van van der Vaart kwam, ging ik er eens goed voor zitten, wat gaat hij doen? Weer op Louis af, of kiest hij nu voor Kluivert, zoals Schaken in de wedstrijd ervoor deed? Of misschien zou Blind dit keer de gelukkige zijn omdat hij Bruno stiekem ook toestemming had gegeven? Of zou hij wellicht een vreugdesprong van weleer maken. Zoals we die kennen uit de tijden van Cruijff en later ook Rijkaard en Gullit. Als ik aan dat soort hupjes, sprongen en vreugde denk, word ik altijd erg blij.

Je ziet tegenwoordig de raarste dingen van spelers die scoren. Een shirt dragen onder je shirt voor een collega sporter of overleden vriend vind ik helemaal niet erg. Sterker nog dat is een mooi gebaar. Maar bijvoorbeeld een Andy van der Meide’tje vind ik zo ongelooflijk irritant. Ook al ben ik Ajax supporter, als hij weer scoorde en net deed alsof hij een bazooka afvuurde, met pijl en boog schoot of zich waande als scherpschutter in Sniper, vroeg ik me altijd af of die jongen wel helemaal lekker was.

Terug naar Bruno. Na zijn goal was mijn enthousiasme vrij snel over. Bruno bleef ogenschijnlijk rustig en tikte zichzelf en het KNVB logo op de borst, alsof het de normaalste zaak van de wereld was dat hij scoorde in het ´Oranje´shirt. Ik voel me wel een beetje een oude zak om het te zeggen. Ik ben overigens pas 26, maar het moet toch een briljant gevoel zijn als je als 20jarig pikkie speelt voor het Nederlands elftal en je scoort ook nog eens!

Ik hoop dat Bruno gewoon met het verkeerde been uit bed was gestapt, of dat hij de bal zelf liever met zijn andere been erin had willen tikken. Ik weet het niet, maar laten we allen hopen dat hij snel weer gaat juichen zoals bij zijn eerste twee goals van dit jaar. Dus Bruno, spring volgende keer Louis weer in de armen, spring met een vuist in de lucht of ren naar het publiek. Daar worden we allemaal stukken vrolijker van!

Voetballen! Voetballen!’, klonk het door de woonkamer. Toen ik afgelopen wedstrijd van het Nederlands elftal aanzette, hoorde ik dat onze bondscoach Louis van Gaal vanuit de linkerhoek van het beeldscherm roepen naar zijn rennende jongelingen op het hoofdstedelijk ArenA-veld. Voetballen moesten ze, zo vond Louis. En dan nog tweemaal, het liefst.

Ik moest lachen. De driftige wanhoop van een man van 61 die het thuis met een even oude vrouw doet. Zoiets zie en hoor ik wel eens op zomerse dagen als ik in de tuin zit en ik een vlaag geluid meekrijg van de sportvelden even verderop. Boze mannen die grager willen dan de voetjes van hun kinderen kunnen ballen. Voetballen!

Ik vroeg me af hoe het in het weliswaar aan de voorkant platte, maar ervaren voetbalhoofd van Louis was ontstaan naar de jongemannen die betaald krijgen om te voetballen te roepen dat ze ‘voetballen! voetballen!’ moeten. Ik begrijp wel, om direct de kritiek af te weren, dat Louis waarschijnlijk in een jargon sprak. Het Louis-jargon. Hij zal wel iets van ‘meer met elkaar spelen en zo een aanval opbouwen naar voren’ bedoeld hebben. Maar Louis riep toch echt tweemaal luid, zo luid dat het de microfoons die het bij mij in de woonkamer brachten bereikte ‘voetballen! voetballen!’.

De staat van Louis is als je het mij vraagt te vatten in het waanzinnige van zijn kreten aan de lijn. Louis heeft altijd al iets waanzinnigs gehad, natuurlijk, in de slechtste zin van het woord, maar het lijkt nu alleen maar erger te zijn geworden. De jaren hebben van Louis een enorme vulkaan gemaakt. Duitsland stookte hem op. En nu is hij uit op wraak in een WK-finale. Zijn drift spuit nu als lava naar buiten in kernwoorden op herhaling. En de jongetjes op het veld maar rennen, omdat ze doodsbang zijn dat ze de poten verbranden in Louis z’n lava.

Wat dat betreft is het misschien goed dat Louis tegenwoordig de elf van oranje doet. Aardig zijn hielp niet, hebben we gezien. Je moet tegen ze schreeuwen wat ze moeten doen. Voetballen! Voetballen!

Ninety minutes later, a chip from Luciano Narsingh (sent deep by Kevin Strootman) ensured the first win in five, overcoming an energetic Turkey-side in the process. The relief was illustrated by Feyenoord central defender Bruno Martins Indi, who jumped Louis van Gaal after the goal and knocking the 61 year old over. On paper, only the 2-0 final score will remain, with the first goal scored by Robin Van Persie from a Wesley Sneijder corner. but a more detailed look signals the start of a new beginning for the Dutch.

The fear of Louis van Gaal favouring (former) Ajax-players has been put to bed by the manager right away. The diverse background of the first eleven is rather remarkable. With Tim Krul, Darryl Janmaat (ADO Den Haag), Jetro Willems, Kevin Strootman (Sparta Rotterdam), Luciano Narsingh (AZ Alkmaar), Bruno Martins Indi, Jordy Clasie, Robin van Persie (Feyenoord/ Excelsior) and Arjen Robben (FC Groningen), only Wesley Sneijder and John Heitinga remained as former Ajax-alumni. Luckily for van Gaal, most youth set-ups in the Netherlands propagate a 4-3-3 playing style, which makes it easier to implement players into the system he eyes.

The team selection suggests this system is an expansive 4-3-3, with Robben and especially Narsingh keeping the play wide, in order to create space for Sneijder to roam in, coming in from left midfield. Van Persie was disciplined in the striker role, with more focus on the left and occasionally allowing Sneijder to leap him. From the look of things, Louis van Gaal has installed confidence in the creativity and class of Robben, Sneijder and Van Persie for his side to win matches. This triangle in the left forward field were always searching to combine, while Narsingh appeared a little bit lost on the right. His main role was to occupy space and push back the left side of the Turkish defence. One last thing that caught the eye in attacking sense was the switch of sides between Robben and Narsingh in the last minutes of the game, when Turkey pinned the Dutch back on their own half. With Narsingh and Robben coming in on their good foot, the counterattacking options became way more direct, as was shown by Narsinghs finish in the 90^th minute.

The change in the way the midfield was set-up was remarkable. Against Belgium, he preferred the rather immobile Nigel de Jong and Rafael van der Vaart accompanying the Internazionale star, now he opted for Jordy Clasie in a controlling role, with left-footed Kevin Strootman on the right.  Jordy Clasie is more of a deep lying playmaker and Van Gaal’s plan with him looks reminiscent of the plan Marco van Basten had with Wesley Sneijder: An intelligent, ball-playing, rangy midfielder who has the ability to switch fast from defense to attack. Sneijder struggled back then and so did Clasie this time. But whereas Sneijder couldn’t cope with the discipline required for the position, Clasie appeared just nervous. He was substitute after 50 minutes, but the youngster could still play a role I for the Dutch national team. Those who have seen him play for Feyenoord last season know he can occupy the deep lying playmaker role with verve at a lower level and if he gets used to playing in such a high tempo and on such a stage, he could hold down his place in the Oranje-side. Kevin Strootman played the right midfield-positon and was one of the star performers for the Dutch. The PSV-midfielder balanced the play by slotting in a more central position once Sneijder started to move forward.  The assist on Narsingh (a counter attacking, 60 yard pass) was testament to his excellent performance.  Strootman has been linked with top clubs in the past and from a performance like the one versus Turkey, it’s not hard to see why. The 22 year old is both technically and tactically astute, a neat passer, has physical presence and seems to thrive under pressure. His versatility is also an asset, as he filled in the role of Clasie after the substitution of the latter after 50 minutes. From that moment, Leroy Fer of FC Twente occupied the right midfield. In the mold of players like Yaya Touré and Abou Diaby, he added some extra dynamic and steel to the midfield. With most attacking moves played over the left, he rarely got the chance to show this feature of his play. One thing that stood out from the midfield performance was not only the mobility, but also the higher tempo of passing.

In defence, Van Gaal opted for two attacking full-backs. PSV’s Jetro Willems leaped Robben a few times, but looked prone and nervous defensively. The same went for Darryl Janmaat (Feyenoord), who struggled to position himself when Turkey attacked over his side. He was substituted after the first half. Ricardo van Rhijn, the successor of Gregory van der Wiel at Ajax, wasn’t too impressive either, but wasn’t found out as often as Janmaat. Overall, Turkey should have exploited these weaknesses more and the Dutch were lucky that they didn’t.

In central defence, Van Gaal looked to Heitinga to lead the defence. Accompanied by the aforementioned Feyenoord-youngster Bruno Martins Indi, they were rarely threatened through the centre, apart from some miscommunication between Martins Indi and goalkeeper Tim Krul, almost resulting in an own goal. Tim Krul was preferred to Maarten Stekelenburg and looked vulnerable from crosses a few times, but he was a calm presence in a young defence.

There is still a lot of work to do to make all the youngsters click, but with a first major result secured and two years to go until the next major tournament, these talents could well develop into class players by gaining experience on international level. The higher tempo, the constant pressuring of opponents, the togertheness, fight and the energetic play in general must all have pleases van Gaal. In all fairness, the match itself could have gone either way, but where his first period as a national coach was dominated by coin flips in his disadvantage, the first one in his second fell his way.

Real Madrid tried to bring in a Makelélé-type midfielder in with Thomas Gravesen, who made a remarkable transfer from Everton in the winter of 2005. It failed. Later, the two Diarra’s (Mahammadou and Lassana) were brought in to various degrees of success.

Several other clubs opted for ‘a spoiler’. Edgar Davids sat deep in the Barcelona-midfield for six months to help them in a remarkable revival in 2004, Nigel De Jong was one of the first big signings for Manchester City in 2009, Owen Hargreaves earned a 17 million pound move to Manchester United in 2007, Makelélé himself repeated the trick he had done before at Paris Saint-Germain from 2008 to the end of his career in 2011. To top it all off, AC Milan’s Gattuso and Ambrosini were suddenly rated top-class.

Even though all these players and the lesser gods that have fulfilled this role were all decent and useful footballers, they also rip joy out of the game. Their absence in attacking sense makes their work as dull as it is admirable and, in some cases, necessary. But many teams in the past proved the presence of one such player is not required to achieve success. A more mobile, attack-minded midfielder may leave a team a little more exposed at the back, but is more capable of relieving pressure on the defence and also adds more variety to the attacking moves of a team.

Luckily, the mobile midfielder is being implemented more and more again the last few months.  Khedira was brought in at Real Madrid and has found his feet in Mourinho’s side. Barcelona have added Alexandre Song to ignite some attacking play from a deep lying midfield-position. At Arsenal he has been succeeded by Abou Diaby, a more mobile, marauding midfielder. Nigel De Jong was allowed to leave Manchester City and was replaced by Jack Rodwell, while Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal dropped the tough-tackling Dutchman from the national selection to bring in Leroy Fer. Bayern München added the highly rated Javi Martinez to their squad for a record fee. Another example of a powerhouse, striding across the field to make an impact.

Although most players are accompanied in midfield by a player who often covers when these players try to make an impact in the other half, the midfields of these clubs have become more versatile. The player next to these ‘man-machines’ are often technically proficient, blessed with great tactical vision and always of attacking intent. And well, let’s be honest: A tidy player is nice, but what arouses more than a Yaya Touré-type crushing opponents by brute force?

Five days later, he didn’t look so happy. After the 4-2 friendly loss against neighbours and rivals Belgium, he acknowledged there was still a long way to go for the Dutch national team.  The game highlighted several aspects of van Gaal’s philosophy, as well as the shortcomings of the current pool of players he can choose from. Van Gaal made some interesting decisions. Instead of opting for a 4-2-3-1, Van Gaal chose to play the popularity card and opt for his beloved 4-3-3 formation. Instead of wingers cutting in, he preferred to use out and out wingers.  The midfield set-up was also rather interesting. Bert van Marwijk played with two holding midfielders leaving the attacking midfielder in a free role. Louis van Gaal used two creative midfielders  with a defensive midfielder in behind. Defensively, there were no tactical changes.

The changes in personnel were equally remarkable. Eight player untainted by the disastrous European Championships were brought in with no less than six players yet to win a cap at full international level. Arjen Robben started in his most natural position on the left flank, freeing up the right side for PSV newcomer Luciano Narsingh, a young talented right-footed winger. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, so ostensibly ignored by van Marwijk when the big games came around, was given the nod upfront ahead of Manchester United bound Robin van Persie. Many had called for the Schalke 04 hitman’s inclusion, pointing to his  impeccable scoring record for Oranje and his status as the Bundesliga’s leading marksman. Both Narsingh and Huntelaar scored, with Robben weighing in with two assists.

In midfield, Wesley Sneijder was accompanied by Rafael van der Vaart, with Nigel De Jong behind his two former Ajax-team mates.  All three struggled to make a mark in the game as Belgium coach Marc Wilmots’ man-marking worked to perfection. Van der Vaart was substituted at half-time to give AZ-prodigy Adam Maher his debut.

In defence, young Jetro Willems kept his place as left back and in the centre, experienced defender and new Feyenoord-signing Joris Mathijsen regained his place next to John Heitinga. Ajax’ Ricardo van Rhijn replaced club colleague Gregory van der Wiel at right back, something he has done for Frank De Boer during the past six months.  Indeed, once van Rhijn had been joined at the start of the second half by AZ’s Nick Viergever and Feyenoord duo Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan de Vrij., the entire Dutch back four comprised debutants. All four showed promise for the future even if their lack of experience at top level was evident. Stekelenburg held down his place in goal but mixed some good saves with a blunder for Belgium’s third goal. With Tim Krul and Michel Vorm providing stiff competition, the AS Roma-goal keeper really has to up his game to maintain his spot between the sticks.

Louis van Gaal will have a long way to go to rebuild this team.  As a glance at the squad shows, there is a gap between the ‘82-‘84 generation containing blue-chip players such as Van der Vaart, Sneijder, Van Persie, Huntelaar, Nigel De Jong, Heitinga and Robben and the new crop of prospects born after 1990. It means that the ageing core that were almost crowned World Cup winners cannot be replaced with experienced players who can be eased into the team. It was abundantly clear at Euro 2012 that a defence containing Mathijsen/ Vlaar and Heitinga is no longer anywhere near good enough to compete at the top level. The onus is therefore on van Gaal to strike the right balance between relying on the old guard to ensure qualification and slotting top prospects like Stefan de Vrij (20 year old captain of Feyenoord) into the team. In midfield, a similar problem has occurred. Even though PSV’s Kevin Strootman and Adam Maher are obviously on the road to bigger things, the experience of Van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong is hard to ignore given the necessity of qualifying for Brazil 2014.

Attacking-wise, the biggest challenge is enabling all the available talent to gel. Van Marwijk never lost faith in Van Persie, but it was rarely, if ever repaid. Whether it is van Persie or Huntelaar who has to sit on the bench, the decision will always court controversy unless one happens to be dramatically outshining the other . Arjen Robben is known as quite the egotistical player and can be seen as quite a liability from that perspective but there are few players in the world who can  consistently make such a devastating and decisive impact on a game. Ibrahim Afellay, the only player to break through from the ’85-’89 generation, might be a Barcelona-player, but he has struggled over the last eighteen months to get regular games due to various reasons. He was one of the bigger disappointments in Poland and Ukraine.  Waiting in the wings are young strikers like Bas Dost (Wolfsburg), Luuk De Jong(Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Jeremain Lens(PSV) while wingers Ola John (Benfica) and the aforementioned Luciano Narsingh will be eager to prove their worth when the opportunity arises.

The talent is clearly there for Louis van Gaal to make his second term as Dutch national coach a bigger success then his first. As is inevitable with such riches at his disposal, it will involve some hard decision-making and the nurturing of  young talent. A manager who has won a league title at every club he has managed should have nothing to prove, but this might be a career defining moment for the 61 year old. Will he be a great manager or a legendary one?

Apart from the trouble on the managerial front, FC Twente declined dramatically in terms of quality. Creative midfielder Theo Janssen left the club for Ajax, while absolute star man Bryan Ruiz was sold to Fulham. In the winter, striker Marc Janko (also known as ‘Der Alpen Bomber’) transferred to FC Porto. Their replacements weren’t quite of the same calibre (yet). Dutch central midfielders Willem Janssen (no fee, Roda JC) and Leroy Fer (5 million euros, Feyenoord) were signed. Both prospects especially Leroy Fer, who is deemed to be a Dutch international. But also more the industrious type, rather than creators. It left Belgian midfielder Nacer Chadli with a huge responsibility. And he did not cope well at all. The player who was rumoured to go to Fulham for 10 million pounds rarely showed the form that made him so in demand the year before. Furthermore, no quality left back was signed, leaving right-footed defender Dwight Tiendalli struggling at that position. The depth of the squad was questionable as well.

There were some positive notes. The development of striker Luuk de Jong (scoring 25 Eredivsie-goals in one season, almost double of what he had scored in the three seasons before all together) has been impressive and the same can be said of Ola John. The left winger was an absolute revelation. Having just come in the team, he immediately attracted attention with his direct and powerful style of play. A return of eight goals and fifteen assists were a testament to his spectacular emergence.

The new season started early for the club. And without the ‘positive notes’. Ola John was transferred to Benfica for a sum of twelve million euros, including add-ons. Striker Luuk de Jong was still on vacation following his inclusion in the Dutch squad at the Euros and made the switch to Borussia Mönchengladbach for a record sum of fifteen million euros. Quite a setback for the club, but the manner of response has been impressive. Dead wood has been cut. Right-back Dwight Tiendalli was released, while left-back Bart Buysse made a switch to Club Brugge and the temporary departure of wingers Emir Bajrami (AS Monaco), midfielder Thilo Leugers (NAC Breda) and Nick Marsman (Go Ahead Eagles) opened up space in the salary house.

Ola John his replacement was already signed before the young winger was transferred to Benfica. Dusan Tadic of FC Groningen cost close to 8 million euros, but the Serbian winger has the assets to make himself a huge success. He may not be as pacey as Ola John, but his trickery and left foot are up there with the best in Eredivisie. This was illustrated by a statistic from his first season at FC Groningen: He came third in the European assists rankings behind Lionel Messi and Mesut Ozil. His second season at de Trots van het Noorden was rather average, but he still managed to score seven goals and note nine assists in the process. At 23, he’s still developing himself and with his creativity, he should be able to lift the burden that was on Nacer Chadli last season when FC Twente were unable to force a breakthrough.

Luuk de Jong his departure has been followed up with a move for nineteen year old Luc Castaignos. The former Feyenoord-prodigy left Internazionale after just one season to take up the number nine-position at Twente and while Luuk De Jong is a more established striker, replacing him with Castaignos can be seen as quite the coup.  Castaignos scored 15 Eredivisie-goals in one season for a struggling Feyenoord-side at the age of 18. The season in Italy will not have hold back his development, learning from the likes of Milito, Forlan and Sneijder. And where Luuk de Jong was a more dependant striker playing closer to the box, Castaignos has the speed and strength to impose himself in a more versatile way.
Talking about versatile:’The acquiring of Robbert Schilder (NAC Breda) might just be quite a smart move. The Ajax-youth graduate is a technically and tactically aware footballer and can play in a range of positions. He also adds some experience, being  26 years old and having close to 200 competitive games under his belt. Schilder made quite the impression pre-season and even though some expected him to become more of a squad player, he could well become a first-team regular at left back.

One other new signing that might surprise is Felipe Gutierrez. A highly rated youngster in his native country Chile, the left footed attacking midfielder is expected to have a bright future ahead of him. The defence was further bolstered with the signing of Andreas Bjelland, A Denmark international who threatened the starting position of internationally known Simon Kjaer in the build-up to the Euros. A composed and intelligent defender, he is expected to take over the left central defender spot from Peter Wisgerhof.  Right back Tim Breukers (Heracles Almelo), Russian striker Dimitriy Bulykin (Ajax) and young winger Edwin Gyasi (De Graafschap) were added to the squad as well, providing an increase of strength in depth. Furthermore, players like Leroy Fer  and Willem Janssen are one season further in their development and should contribute in a bigger way than they did last season.

With the squad significantly strengthened, FC Twente will attempt to add another league title to their prize cabinet. The talent is there and after a lacklustre season, the other title contenders are warned:  Steve and his boys are back again.

The Serbian winger humiliated his former club by scoring twice and supplying two assists in a 4-1 mauling of the Trots van het Noorden. He showed class by not celebrating his goals, but that was the only consolation he could give the FC Groningen-supporters. Dutch journalists raved over the performance of the 23-year old, saying this could be the emergence of a new Eredivisie-superstar. But Tadic has been a sensation from the very first time he kicked a ball in the Dutch league.

FC Groningen felt the signing was quite a coup in 2010. For a rumoured fee of around 1 million euros the gifted youngster (then 21) was transferred to the Eredivisie, beating off reported interest from Montpellier, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow amongst others. Technical manager Henk Veldmate stated he ‘was proud Tadic chose FC Groningen as his new club’, as he felt Tadic would really add to the quality and unpredictability of the side.

A first sign of things to come was shown when Dusan Tadic made his debut in Euroborg for FC Groningen. In a thriller of a match (2-2 draw after Ajax went 0-2 up) vice-World Champion Gregory van der couldn’t contain the dribbler, who showed his worth by delivering an assist for striker Tim Matavz. It would be the first of many. In his first season only Messi and Özil supplied more assists in the European competitions. Apart from the assists (22 in total) he also scored seven times. He was voted player of the year by the FC Groningen-supporters; testament to his incredible season.

Last season he wasn’t quite as effective, but in an utterly disappointing FC Groningen-side he still managed to get seven goals and nine assists. With FC Groningen finishing fourteenth in the Eredivisie, it was time for Dusan Tadic to move on. Steve McClaren’s FC Twente was decisive and paid over 7,5 million euros for the Serb.

Some were sceptical over the fee FC Twente paid, but few will argue they signed a quality player. Tadic has a left foot as good as any, is technically gifted and has proven himself to be somewhat of a trickster when given little space. And not only does he have the skills to get past his man, his ability to see space opening up and his awareness of the movement of his teammates make him a rather unpredictable, versatile player. His right-foot is rather weak and he isn’t blessed with top pace, but his acceleration is up to scratch and in an attacking side like FC Twente he’ll probably play quite close to the box, which should suit his game quite well.

The preview given in the Europa League-games (5 games, 2 goals and 3 assists) and in the first Eredivisie-game of the season already rectifies the, for Eredivisie-standards, hefty fee that has been paid for the winger. And with Belgian winger Nacer Chadli still at the club, FC Twente-fans must be drooling over the thought of watching the two creative wingers play together for a whole season. And when Tadic can maintain anything near the form he has kicked off his Twente-career with, it might just be restricted to one season.

Nee, het clubvoetbal is toch het leukst! Op zondag met de trein naar de wedstrijd, lekker biertje drinken en  een beetje ouwehoeren. Dan negentig minuten voetbal kijken en vervolgens het pre-wedstrijd herhalen. Dan weer een beetje tipsy terug de trein in, langs de snackbar en Studio Sport kijken. Heerlijke zondagen zijn dit! Tenzij je niet wint.

Ik kan echt niet tegen het verlies van mijn club. Dit heeft natuurlijk elke supporter. Vaak gaan bij mij verliesdagen gepaard met algehele malaise.  Heeft mijn team verloren, dan mis ik de trein. Haal ik de trein toch, dan vergeet ik natuurlijk in te checken. En ja, je raadt het al, dan komt de conducteur ineens wél controleren, met een boete als gevolg. Als we verliezen, neemt de snackbar de verkeerde bestelling op of eindig ik met half lauwe frieten op de bank. En als slagroom op de taart wint de concurrent natuurlijk wel.

Oftewel, het is een kutweekend.

Nu hoor ik al mijn trouwe lezers al denken: ‘Voor welke club ben jij dan? Voor wie juich of door wie huil jij?’ Het wordt tijd dat ik vertel naar welke stadion ik ga. Ik moét voor mijn voetbalgeaardheid uitkomen, uit de zogeheten voetbalkast komen. Hier komt het: Ik ben voor Ajax.

Pfff, het hoge woord is eruit.
Ik ben dus een verwende voetbalsupporter.  Mijn club heeft veel prijzen gewonnen, goede spelers voortgebracht en speelt vaak leuk voetbal (al zullen mensen het hier mee oneens zijn). Gelukkig heb ik dus vrij weinig van de waardeloze weekenden.

Als ik bijvoorbeeld voor Excelsior zou zijn en dus bijna elke week zo’n kutweekend zou hebben, zou ik helemaal gek worden. Ik zou elke maandag chagrijnig op het werk komen, zou niemand meer vriendelijk te woord kunnen staan. Daarom heb ik groot respect voor supporters van kleinere clubs.

Ik hoop niet dat dit arrogant over komt, want zo is het absoluut niet bedoeld. Ik denk dat ik en veel Ajax-supporters daar iets van zouden kunnen leren. In de Arena is het al bijna fluiten geblazen als we bij rust niet met 3-0 voor staan. Bij een 3-0 voorsprong bij Excelsior kan ik me voorstellen dat de polonaise ingezet wordt!

Want we hebben deze zomer wel geleerd dat het succes zo weer weg vloeit. Dat kon ik deze zomer aan omdat mijn club kampioen was geworden. Maar als ik weer Excelsior als voorbeeld neem, dan kan ik me niet anders voorstellen dat de supporters van Excelsior echt een kut zomer gehad hebben!

Voor komend seizoen ziet het er voor mij gelukkig goed uit. We kunnen er toch wel vanuit gaan dat Ajax mee gaat doen om de titel. Mochten we de hattrick niet winnen, heb ik gelukkig een hele rustige zomer om mezelf op te laden.

In July 2011 Arsene Wenger stated Arsenal could not consider themselves to be a big club were they to lose two of their best players in Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas. Instead of a reassurance, it became a confirmation of something most football fans were aware of for a while: Arsenal was no longer a top club. Instead, it became perhaps the biggest of all non-top clubs. Clichy and Nasri followed their former teammates Touré and Adebayor to Manchester and Fabregas was transferred to boyhood club Barcelona.

Instead of replacing the three with players of a similar calibre, the French boss opted for youth. And how he lived to regret that. A brutal punishment handed out by Manchester United (8-2) served as a wake-up call and with great  haste, the club started to assemble whatever few internationally experienced players they could get their hands on. Park-Chu Young, Yossi Benayoun, André Santos, Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta, joined Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had been signed much earlier. Oxlade-Chamberlain looks the real deal and Arteta could arguably be seen as one of the signings of the season, but the other five have been mediocre at best. When you look at the amount of money spent on them, it’s no wonder. Oxlade-Chamberlain was the most expensive buy the Gunners did last summer, Arteta the third. Only Gervinho, who came in at £10.5 million, didn’t live up to his transfer fee.

The signs this summer though point to Wenger finally learning his lesson. Not only is he delving into the transfer market remarkably early, but he also seems willing to spend on quality players. FC Köln’s Lukas Podolski, who has won over a century caps for Germany despite just turning 27, was the first big-name signing to join Arsenal. Soon he was followed by Ligue 1-top scorer Olivier Giroud, who chose to leave French champions Montpellier. Both required a transfer sum of over £10 million, a fee seldom spent by the club on one player. However, the number of successful buys in this price range, which outweigh the few flops, mean that it is reasonable to expect quite a bit from both.

The biggest signal of intent is the chase for Spanish playmaker Santi Cazorla. Cazorla, who according to Sid Lowe ‘may just be the best player not playing for Madrid or Barcelona’, is reportedly available due to the financial problems at Malaga and could really add something to this Arsenal-team. By all accounts, Arsenal’s opening gambit alone already exceeds  the Gunners’ transfer record set when they paid £15.6 million for Andrey Arshavin in 2009.

These three players would add power, goalscoring ability, intelligence, directness, versatility, creativity and international experience to the squad. And whereas Arsenal were very dependent on that one man up front last season, these players would relieve Van Persie of the goalscoring burden. With no players of importance looking to leave this summer, the Dutchman aside, this could well be the time for Arsenal to finally challenge for the Premier League title again. Van Persie would be well advised to realise he could be essential in this pursuit. When ultimately deciding which other club he should join, he should not lose sight of the fact that his performances for his country prove he isn’t as versatile as he appears to be when in an Arsenal-shirt. Furthermore, in Arsène Wenger he has a manager who has complete, even blind faith in his abilities. Given the earlier-mentioned additions and a year of experience added to a young squad full of talent, staying put might just be a wise option.

Het vertrek van Benitez was onvermijdelijk. Na zes jaar was de liefde tussen Liverpool en de Spanjaard bekoeld en met het vertrek van sterspelers als Xabi Alonso en Javi Mascherano was er ook ruimte om een nieuw tijdperk in te luiden bij de club. Roy Hodgson werd aangesteld en daarmee koos Liverpool een beetje voor het smaakje van de maand. De aimabele Engelsman had namelijk zojuist met het veel kleinere Fulham de Europa League-finale behaald (en verloren). Dit was pas zijn eerste echte Engelse succes in zijn carriere. Met Liverpool kreeg Hodgson een club om zich, na vele successen in het buitenland, ook in eigen land te bewijzen.
Maar in plaats van dat de nieuwe manager Roy Hodgson de financiele ruimte kreeg om het team te bouwen zoals hij dat wilde, moest de huidige bondscoach van Engeland het doen met beperkte middelen. Slechts Raul Meireles kostte meer dan 5 miljoen pond en de vele koopjes (Brad Jones, Milan Jovanovic, Joe Cole, Cristian Poulsen, Paul Konchesky en Danny Wilson kostten bij elkaar nog geen vijftien miljoen pond) waren geen van allen een succes. De druk op Roy Hodgson werd al snel heel groot en op acht januari 2011 werd hem medegedeeld dat hij de volgende dag niet meer terug hoefde te komen. Officieel in overleg, maar de situatie was dusdanig onhoudbaar dat wanneer dat overleg niet goed. Een echt grote verrassing was dit allemaal niet.

Op dit moment stond Liverpool in vuur en vlam. De club was al uitgeschakeld in de League Cup en stond op een teleurstellende twaalfde plaats, slechts vier punten van de degradatiestreep. Om de club weer wat tot rust te krijgen werd Liverpool-legende Kenny Dalglish als opvolger aangesteld. Een keuze die door de fans werd toegejuicht. De Schot was immers als speler en als manager van de Reds bijzonder succesvol geweest, al was dat inmiddels al meer dan twintig jaar geleden. Suarez en Carroll werden aangetrokken met het geld dat werd ontvangen voor Torres en Babel en de toekomst van Liverpool zag er ineens een stuk beter uit. Onder Dalglish eindigde Liverpool vijfde en in de zomer werden vooral Engelse spelers aangetrokken. Vijfenzestig miljoen pond later eindigde Liverpool achtste. De laagste eindklassering in achttien jaar. In de bekertoernooien werd wel goed gepresteerd. De League Cup werd gewonnen en de FA Cup-finale werd verloren van Chelsea. Het mocht niet baten. Kenny Dalglish kon vertrekken.

Met Brendan Rodgers is een coach aangesteld uit de ‘stal’ van Mourinho. Een man die op twintigjarige leeftijd zijn voetbalcarriere moest opgeven door een blessure. Vervolgens heeft hij onder de vleugels van Mourinho bij Chelsea zijn eigen visie ontwikkeld en was hij bij achtereenvolgens Watford, Reading en Swansea werkzaam. Afgelopen jaar viel Swansea op door haar vloeiende, on-Engelse voetbalstijl. Overwinningen op Arsenal, Manchester City en Liverpool volgden en de uitwedstrijd bij Fulham (0-3 overwinning) werd gevolgd door een staande ovatie van het Londense publiek, iets wat ook gebeurde na het 0-0 gelijkspel bij Liverpool. De manier waarop Rodgers de baan bij Liverpool kreeg is tekenend voor de jongeling. Daar waar velen solliciteren stelde de Noord-Ierse manager:’Als ze me willen, dan moeten ze me maar benaderen.’  Hierdoor verkreeg hij meteen een sterke onderhandelingspositie en krijgt hij, meer dan Hodgson, een hand in het samenstellen van het team. Doordat hij op is gegroeid in het moderne voetbal heeft hij op Dalglish een bepaalde wijsheid en kennis over het tegenwoordige voetbal voor. Ook zijn streven naar mooi, verzorgd voetbal zal hem geen windeieren leggen. Supporters waarderen in slechtere tijden dan nog altijd de intentie van het spel en de tactiek. Het vastleggen van spits Fabio Borini (Oud-Chelsea en Swansea) is een teken dat hij deze speelstijl ook bij Liverpool wil implementeren.

De slogan die de afgelopen jaren in de hunkering naar een landstitel vaak werd gebruikt (This could be our year) kan voorlopig nog even in de ijskast, maar als Rodgers de tijd krijgt om zijn visie over te brengen en het team mag vormen zal Liverpool snel weer bovenin mee strijden.

Het zijn vragen waarover de meeste mensen hun schouders ophalen, maar ik vind het machtig interessant. Aan de meeste feitjes heb je helemaal niets, maar dat maakt mij niet uit. Voetbaltrivia fascineert me, net zoals natuurkundigen gefascineerd kunnen raken van deeltjes kleiner dan een atoom; iets waar ik me geen beeld bij kan vormen en dat me eerlijk gezegd ook geen biet interesseert .

Vanochtend las ik op weg naar werk een boek van journalist/nieuwslezer Rick Nieman over de nieuwskeuzes die redactie van RTL Nieuws dagelijks maakt. Hij haalde daarin de kwestie aan over het melden van de nieuwe trainer van Ajax en vroeg zichzelf af: ‘Kan zoiets een hoofditem zijn?’. Daarbij noemde hij de naam van Henk ten Cate, een gezellige trainer die ik vooral ken als coach van de Eagles, Sparta, NAC, Vitesse, Griekse clubs en natuurlijk zijn topjaren als assistent Frank Rijkaard, van het toen al in Europa dominerende Barcelona.

Was die man trainer geweest van Ajax? Ik kon het niet geloven. Ten Cate bij Ajax? Ik vind het daar helemaal geen type voor. Het boek werd dichtgeklapt en ik besloot het snel op te zoeken in de Wikipedia. Warempel, het klopte… Ten Cate was in het seizoen 2006/2007 hoofdtrainer bij Ajax. De opvolger van Danny Blind, waarvan ik nog wel weet dat hij een tijdje (niet onverdienstelijk) als interim-coach heeft gediend.

Ik sluit Wikipedia en staar voor me uit. Hoe kon ik dit vergeten zijn? Het gebeurt me wel vaker dat iets in de buitenlandse competities me ontgaat of dat ik compleet de naam vergeet van de bonkige spits van Bari, maar zo dicht bij huis zo’n hiaat in m’n kennis? Onvoorstelbaar.

Ik troost mezelf met de gedachte dat ik het wel ergens wist, maar dat ik het had weggestopt. Omdat in mijn belevingswereld de naam Henk ten Cate niet bij Ajax past, heeft mijn brein daarover een blinde vlek getekend. Ik ben er voor mezelf nog niet uit hoe dat mogelijk is, maar als ze dat nu eens in de natuurkunde voor me uit willen zoeken en kunnen verklaren aan de hand van het Higgs-deeltje, zal ik het nooit meer vergeten. Beloofd.

FC Groningen have not stood still though. Robert Maaskant has arrived as the club’s new coach. He won the Polish championship with Wisla Krakow in 2011 and at 43-years old he can still be considered one of the more promising managers in Dutch football,. In recent seasons, players were often sold towards the end of the summer and their replacements brought in later still. Last season was the ultimate example of this: The negotiations surrounding striker Tim Matavz had already begun with several clubs in February but the Slovenian was only eventually sold on the final day of the transfer window to PSV Eindhoven. As a consequence, his replacement David Texeira, arrived at the last moment and had little time to adjust to life in the Netherlands.

From that perspective it is logical that general manager Hans Nijland secured the early, and lucrative, sale of Tadic to FC Twente (€7.7 million). This gave Groningen both the financial muscle and time to do business, both of which have been used to the optimum. Seven new players have been lured to the club before the start of the new campaign. They include Dutch youth internationals Marco Bizot and Género Zeefuik, late bloomers Michael de Leeuw and Mitchell Schet, FC Den Bosch captain Paco van Moorsel and more exotic prospects Filip Kostic and Stefan Magnasco. It all points to a new transfer policy. It is certainly noticeable that the squad is already virtually complete and furthermore that whereas previously Groningen have focused on expensive talent from the Danish Superliga, the emphasis is now on young, Dutch and affordable players. An exception is only made for the brightest of prospects. There is thus a lot to be expected from Filip Kostic, who could be the latest in a long line of success stories from Groningen’s famed scouting system.

Igor Mladenovic, a journalist for Goal.com and sfunion.net, revealed that the left winger is a player of considerable promise: ‘Basically he is a rough diamond with great physical abilities, very explosive with the ball at his feet, quicker than Tadic but with less flair and vision, therefore you should not expect him to get anywhere near the amount of assists Tadic had in his time at Groningen. From all this, you can gather his main weaknesses would be being a bit predictable at times, though he is working on that aspect. Also, a useful new side to his game is the fact he has learned to take a good set-piece. His main strength is his technical ability with the ball at his feet, he is really fast and possesses accurate dribbling.
‘If I had to compare him to a Dutch player I might go for Eljero Elia, who is also incredible in terms of technique but lacks vision. With the right type of instructions though he can easily good enough for Eredivisie, especially since he has a good mentality being extremely serious with the way he handled his career. His uncle is his main counsellor (though he’s not his agent) and really takes care of him a lot.’
It all sounds very good.

Stefan Magnasco did not attract interest from Chelsea and Bolton for nothing. Rupert Fryer, co-founder of www.southamericanfootball.co.uk and contributor to the Guardian, the Observer and the Football Ramble amongst others, too, has described the transfer of Magnasco as “a coup”.  ‘[He has] lots of promise. Could be a very smart move for all concerned. He works the whole flank well and has improved defensively over the last 12 months, mostly in the sense of positioning.’ Joel Sked from chileanfootball.wordpress.com is also upbeat about the transfer: ‘His natural position is right-back but like a lot of Chile players he is versatile which will obviously help in Holland where the psyche is for versatile players. So he can fill in at left-back and in midfield. The fact he is a regular in the defence of Chile’s third biggest side at 19 years old shows the promise. A level up, especially in Europe, should be good for him. As a modern day full-back who could play wing-back he is energetic and dynamic.’ Again it does not sound too bad.

The new (old) path the club is following rightly brings a lot of optimism. Seven players have been bought for the price of one Femi Alijore (€3.4 million), ‘the Nigerian defensive midfielder that could do anything except for head the ball,’ Nijland infamously said, but who might just be the biggest flop the club has had in recent years. All the new players have enough potential to grow and reach a more than acceptable level for a club like FC Groningen. With Bizot (who is a particularly talented goalkeeper) and Magnasco, last year’s problem areas have been strengthened significantly. The club are also on the lookout for another central defender. Schet had more assists(10) last season than Tadic and De Leeuw(10) scored more than Texeira. Dutch under 21-striker Zeefuik is beginning to fulfil his early promise and according to Nijland, he could have been sold on for a huge profit before even kicking a ball in green and white. With Kostic, it appears that the club has filled the hole left by Tadic and van Moorsel was one of five nominees for the Jupiler League Player of the Year award. With ten goals last season, he looks to be a player who can add to the firepower of the team.

There are positives to be found in every single one of the newcomers. What’s more is that Groningen will go into the new season with seven players who featured for Jong Oranje in the past year. Added to that are Serbian and Chilean youth internationals and a number of players who are around the 25 mark – yet to reach their peak. Alongside them, the squad boasts the often-criticised midfielder Tim Sparv (former Southampton youth player), who is a Finnish international, while Uruguayan forwards David Texeira and Matias Jones should be much more at ease with both football and life in the Netherlands. Much is also expected of Belgian central defender Jonas Ivens, who is capable of a much better season than his last. Former NAC Breda and FC Augsburg utility player Kees Kwakman is fit again, three times Swedish international Emil Johansson will compete for the left-back spot with Dutch youth international Lorenzo Burnet, and van Moorsel will want to show he has what it takes at the top level. All of the above serves to give FC Groningen fans plenty of grounds for optimism ahead of the new Eredivisie season. FC Groningen could just be the surprise package of Dutch football next year.

Maar de twee keer dat de Duitsers de bal in ons goal schoten en er veel natuurlijk uitbundig juichten, kwam er een bijna dierlijk gevoel bij me omhoog. Het was geen agressie, geen haat of boosheid, want ze waren gewoon beter. Nee het was een soort misselijkheid en aversie. Hoe kan het toch dat ik het Duitse team zo weinig gun? Heeft het te maken met een oorlog die ik nooit heb meegemaakt? Is het een soort minderwaardigheidsgevoel als Nederlander? Het is inherent aan het voetbal om de tegenstander niets te gunnen, menselijk zelfs. Maar het is voor mij moeilijk te aanvaarden dat ik zoiets voelde die avond.

Gedurende de rest van het toernooi hebben de Duitsers redelijk leuk voetbal gespeeld en hebben ze het toch geschopt tot de halve finale. Deze keek ik samen met veel Duitsers en Italianen. Omringd door witte en blauwe shirts voelde ik me toch ietwat ongemakkelijk.

Maar na de twintigste en helemaal na de 36^ste minuut voelde ik me stukken opgewekter. De reden hiervoor was simpel: De Duitsers stonden achter. Ik stond zelfs met de Italianen de naam te scanderen van de grootste gek in het voetbal: Balotelli! Hiervoor wil ik graag bij deze mijn excuses aanbieden.

Het feit Dat Duitsland eruit zou liggen vond ik belangrijker dan dat een idioot die zijn eigen badkamer in de fik heeft gestoken door er vuurwerk af te steken  zou winnen. Had me dit van te voren verteld en ik had je voor gek verklaard.

Het gevoel van afgunst tegen de buren kwam weer naar boven borrelen. En dat Duitsland eruit lag gaf me toch een goed gevoel. Een gevoel van wraak. Een superkinderachtig gevoel van ‘lekker puh’! En het maakt zelfs een beetje het (in mijn ogen) waardeloze EK goed. Ik schaam me er eigenlijk een beetje voor.

Het feit dat Spanje het EK uiteindelijk gewonnen heeft, vind ik stukken minder erg. Terwijl zij ons toch van de wereldtitel hebben gehouden. Wellicht zou ik mijn aversie richting de Spanjaarden moeten richten. Maar dat lukt me voorlopig echt niet. Ondanks dat het erg kinderachtig is en ik me er een beetje vies bij voel:  Wat blijft het toch lekker dat die Duitsers eruit vliegen!

Die geluksfactor speelde de ploeg tegen Italië parten. Maar er waren nog twee factoren die maakte dat Die Nationalmannschaft tegen de Squadra Azurra ten onder ging, namelijk de mindere eenheid in de groep en vooral het omgaan met standaardsituaties.

Begrijp me niet verkeerd, Duitsland vormde zeker een hechte groep. In tegenstelling tot het Nederlands Elftal is het Duitse team voor een groot deel een vriendenclub, met veel jonge jongens van dezelfde clubteams die al relatief lang met elkaar samenspelen. Er is geen gezeik en ze gaan allemaal door het vuur voor de coach, Joachim Löw. Maar Italië is nog veel hechter. Dat zag je voor aanvang bij het zingen van de volksliederen. Iedereen van de Italiaanse ploeg zong uit volle borst mee, inclusief de voltallige reservebank. Duitsland zong toen al letterlijk een toontje lager.

Daarnaast ging het dus mis met de factor geluk. Over een gebrek aan kansen hadden de Duitsers niet te klagen. De verdediger hoeft maar net een centimeter verderop te staan, de bal maar een tikje verder te rollen of de keeper maar iets meer uit positie te staan en ze hadden er vandaag een stuk of vijf kunnen maken. Het gebeurde niet, net zoals dat niet bij Nederland gebeurde in de eerste groepswedstrijd tegen Denemarken. Voor een hoop mensen was dat een raadsel, ik vond dat wel logisch. Geluk dwing je af, en dat gebeurde niet.

Maar genoeg over Nederland. Wat Duitsland zichzelf echt kan aanrekenen, is het slecht omgaan met standaardsituaties. Ik heb Duitsland in het hele toernooi tientallen hoekschoppen zien krijgen, die meestal door Özil werden genomen. Maar geen van hen leidde tot een grote kopkans voor Klose of Gomez, wat ik toch bijzonder vreemd vind. Beide spelers staan te boek als kopspecialisten pur sang, maar dat is er dit toernooi totaal niet uitgekomen. Ik begreep dat ook in de kwalificatie nauwelijks vanuit stilstaande situaties is gescoord door het Duitse team. Dat kun je jezelf tegen zwakke Europese broeders met een voor de rest ijzersterke equipe nog veroorloven, maar op topniveau moet je ook dat aspect weten te beheersen. Het is doodzonde dat dit potentiële voordeel niet door Löw is uitgebuit.

Verder vond ik Duitsland dit toernooi tegenvallen. Ze hebben met spelers als Özil, Müller, Neuer, Hummels, Schweinsteiger en met name Khedira – van wie ik nog het meest heb genoten – een ongelooflijke hoeveelheid talent in huis, maar wisten maar zelden het spel te etaleren wat ze tijdens vorige toernooien en in de kwalificatie ook lieten zien. Ze hebben, behoudens een aantal wedstrijddelen die soms enkele tientallen minuten duurden, nooit echt de indruk gegeven aanspraak te kunnen maken op de titel.

Italië doet dat wel. De eenheid in de groep is fantastisch. Juist het omkoopschandaal voorafgaand aan het EK heeft het team op scherp gezet. De opmerking van premier Mario Monti, dat het voetbal in Italië misschien maar een aantal jaar stil gelegd zou moeten worden, heeft voor revanchegevoelens gezorgd. “Wij zullen nog weleens laten zien hoe belangrijk wij zijn en het voetbal voor Italië is”, straalde van de spelers af.

In het bijzonder ben ik gecharmeerd geraakt van Mario Balotelli. Dat hij een steekje los heeft en goed kan voetballen wisten we al, maar ik vind hem met name de laatste paar wedstrijden weergaloos. Hij loopt vaak rond alsof hij de weg kwijt is, maar staat er op het juiste moment. En die clownsacties… Ach, die geven de ploeg en het toernooi juist kleur. Ja, van mij mag Italië wel gaan winnen zondag.

Looking first of all at the aforementioned potential successors, Koeman and De Boer would be great choices for the vacant positions. The former has steadied the ship at Feyenoord. And that is no mean feat. The Rotterdam-based club is known for its demanding and expectant fan base and with the current financial problems it just might be one of the hardest job in European football. However, the Zaandammer has transformed the whole atmosphere at De Kuip and for the first time in years (ironically following the departure of Bert van Marwijk), the club is gripped with excitement. At first glance therefore, a more than worthy candidate but in light of his spate of prior failures, he prefers to concentrate on the rebuilding of his reputation.

Frank de Boer is another name that will always pop up when a job like this becomes vacant. His managerial career to date resembles the recent revival of Ronald Koeman in that  He has brought rest to the always turbulent Amsterdam club. In his eighteen month tenure he has won two league titles and is thus yet to taste failure as a coach. Furthermore, he has gone on record to say that he would like to become the Sir Alex Ferguson of Ajax and so he should not be considered as a serious candidate.

The focus is now on those managers currently without a club. Louis van Gaal, Co Adriaanse and perhaps Fred Rutten are the names that immediately spring to mind. Van Gaal already had his run with the national team. And he managed a squad that all managers would envy nowadays. Van der Sar, Frank de Boer, Jaap Stam, Philip Cocu, Patrick Kluivert, Ruud van Nistelrooij; the Dutch side had never had such throughout the team in the last twenty years. Yet van Gaal was unable to steer Oranje past the likes of Portugal and Ireland. Hardly a good omen for a possible return. Though few would dispute the immense knowledge Adriaanse has about the game, the last few years have hardly been an unqualified success. During his time at FC Twente there were some suspicions surrounding his health. While the truth has never been made known in the public domain, it hardly helps to bolster his chances of succeeding van Marwijk.  Fred Rutten is also renowned for his footballing intellect but has found it difficult to cope with the pressure that comes with managing top clubs in both Germany and the Netherlands.

There are also some, less obvious choices. Could a foreign manager be an option? Guardiola has often said he has based his footballing vision on the Dutch. His mentor is also available; Johan Cruijff hasn’t coached a club side for over fifteen years now but he is ’only’ 65 years of age and as others proved, age is nothing but a number. Guus Hiddink  is strictly seen occupied at the moment as footballing director of Anzhi Makachkal, but the lure of managing the Dutch once again must appeal to him. Gert-Jan Verbeek, de AZ Alkmaar manager has proven himself with several clubsides in the Eredivsie and due to his intensity seems more suited for club football, but on merit he deserves to be taken in serious consideration aswell.

However, the most obvious choice is perhaps another former Barcelona manager. Frank Rijkaard has done a good job when able to work with elite players. His stints as Netherlands coach and boss of Barcelona can be considered as definite successes, though fans of Sparta Rotterdam, Galatasaray and Saudi Arabia will not remember him too fondly. It can therefore be deduced that he would be ideally suited to a second spell in charge of Oranje as he has mostly been able to manage big egos with consummate ease.

Whoever the new manager will be; it will be considered a surprise. And so a new era will begin for the always controversial Dutch. There is no question that the talent is there, rather a matter of waiting for the right coach who can get the most out of them. The wait has now begun.

Bij Portugal – Spanje zal dit geen probleem zijn. Veel spelers kennen elkaar uit de Spaanse competitie en zijn vaak zelfs teamgenoten (geweest). Daarbij heeft Portugal met Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe en Coentrao ook nog drie Real Madridspelers in de basis, terwijl Spanje aantreedt met in ieder geval vier en misschien zelfs vijf spelers van Barcelona. Wat nog veel interessanter is; het verschil in speelstijl.

Cesc Fabregas zei in de aanloop van dit duel al: ‘Portugal – Spanje is vergelijkbaar met Real Madrid-Barcelona. Zowel Real Madrid als Portugal leunt op een sterke verdediging en zijn goed in de omschakeling. Dat maakt van hen één van de sterkste teams ter wereld’. Toch zijn er essentiele verschillen. Zo mist Portugal ten opzichte van Real Madrid een echte spelmaker als Ozil en een spits als Benzema. Helder Postiga is bijvoorbeeld allesbehalve een topspits. Hij is door een blessure niet meer inzetbaar dit toernooi en zal naar verwachting worden vervangen door Hugo Almeida. De derde in de lijn, Nelson Oliveira, heeft wel de potentie om een echte topspits te worden, maar zal vanwege een gebrek aan ervaring even moeten wachten. Het is allemaal wat pover dus, daar in de spits bij Portugal.

Normaal gesproken komt al het gevaar dan ook vanaf de flanken. Want met Nani en Cristiano Ronaldo zijn er wel twee mannen met een actie. Het is tekenend dat alle vier van de zes goals van Portugese makelij werden gemaakt door een flankspeler. De andere twee goals kwamen uit respectievelijk een corner en een assist van Nani.  Cristiano Ronaldo vervult een iets andere rol dan bij Real Madrid. Hij is iets meer gebonden aan de flank en daardoor zou hij iets minder betrokken bij het spel moeten zijn. Maar de sterspeler wordt constant gezocht en hoewel hij de eerste twee wedstrijden niet helemaal uit de verf kwam, heeft hij de twee wedstrijden daarop bewezen dat hij ook in een Portugees shirt kan schijnen.
Het middenveld mist de diepgang, aangezien er geen echte spelmaker staat. Verdedigend is het verschil met Real Madrid niet bijster groot.

Spanje heeft als iedereen fit is sowieso zes Barcelona-spelers in de basis staan. Puyol, Pique, David Villa, Xavi, Iniesta en Sergio Busquets zijn de afgelopen jaren redelijk zeker geweest van hun plek. Daarbij wordt van Barcelona jeugdproduct Jordi Alba (Valencia) verwacht dat hij de overstap naar het Camp Nou deze zomer zal maken en heeft Cesc Fabregas dit toernooi ook al twee basisplaatsen en twee invalbeurten op zijn naam. Het grote verschil tussen Barcelona en Spanje ligt dan ook voorin. Want Spanje heeft geen Messi.

De kritiek dat Spanje saai voetbalt (mensen zijn het positiespel blijkbaar zat) heeft te maken met een gebrek aan ‘directe’ spelers. Er is, helemaal als Cesc Fabregas speelt in plaats van Fernando Torres, heel weinig dreiging richting doel. David Silva en Iniesta zijn een genot om naar te kijken als het gaat om techniek en inzicht en beiden hebben het vermogen een man te passeren, maar zijn niet vergelijkbaar met spelers als Messi of Cristiano Ronaldo. Er zal niet snel een ‘run’ volgen, maar meteen naar de pass gezocht worden.

Het zal een interessante clash worden in deze Real Madrid – Barcelona min drie (Ozil, Benzema, Messi). Overwint de directheid van Portugal of het hypnotiserende positiespel van Spanje?

Those who lack strength must compensate with inventiveness. So did David in one of the most famous biblical stories, defeating Goliath with a slingshot, rather than actual fight the big fellow in close combat. This compares well with the Dutch. Seen in historical terms, they have always performed way beyond their means. With a population of sixteen million , it’s one of the smaller countries in Europe, yet they have left a great legacy in football. For instance, they brought the world ‘Total Football’ (Totaalvoetbal) in 1974, when the world marvelled at the Dutch.  In ’88 a side including mouthwatering talents like Gullit, van Basten, Rijkaard and Koeman won the only international trophy the Dutch have assembled, despite reaching, and losing, a record three WC-finals. The Ajax-side of ’71-’73 wasn’t too shabby either nor was their Champions League-winning side in ‘ 95. The club success wasn’t solely Amsterdam based though. With Feyenoord and PSV able to count themselves as European Champions Cup winners, only England have delivered more different winners of Europe’s leading club competition. There were thirteen Dutchmen on Pelé’s list of 125 greatest living footballers, a worthy testament to their accomplishments.

Over the last 20 years, the major club teams have hit a bit of rough patch. The first major blow was the landmark Bosman ruling, with several top players (Bogarde, Kluivert, Davids) leaving a star-studded Ajax-side on free transfers. This was mainly down to the big money offered by other clubs, since while Ajax was a top European side at that moment, they could not compete with the biggest clubs in England, Italy or Spain. In order to boost the financial power of the club, a new stadium was built and the club was floated on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange ; the latter freeing up no less than €60m to be invested in the club. The late ‘90s were a true financial disaster. Instead of continuing what the Amsterdam club did best -  nurturing young talent – they blew crazy money on mediocre players in an ultimately futile effort to keep up with Europe’s major clubs. The most telling example was perhaps Froylan Ledezma, a Costa Rican player acquired for €4.5 million. While it was a big money transfer at the time, he never appeared in a competitive match for the Amsterdam club. Other legendary failures include Mariano Juan, Ivan Gabrich and former Manchester City ace Giorgi Kinkladze.

Not that the other big clubs could cover themselves in glory either though. Feyenoord bought a contignent of South-American players of which only a few came good. Mauricio Aros, Tati Montoya, Patricio Graff, Somalia were not exactly world beaters. The few decent buys from that time ironically never blossomed in the red and white shirt, Julio Cruz a notable exception. Gerson Magrao, Michel Bastos and Fred were all (partly) owned by Feyenoord at one point and went on to play Champions League football at other clubs. Perhaps the biggest financial disaster in the Netherlands followed a few years later. In 2007, Feyenoord hadn’t been in the Champions League for years, which left Feyenoord struggling to compete financially. In a desperate attempt to qualify, silly money was thrown on aging players such as Roy Makaay and Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Bert van Marwijk, who as coach led De Club van het Zuid to the 2002 UEFA Cup, returned for a second spell at the helm. The project failed miserably and left the club in dire financial straits.

PSV initially coped quite well and racked up title after title in the ‘00s. However, their focus has always been on hoovering up foreign talent, with Ronaldo and Romario the most eyecatching players of all. Mind you, they also bought one Abel Xavier once, who is better known for his crazy hair and beard, so it’s not all success for the Eindhoven-based club. After a couple of seasons with more misses than hits on the transfer market, their dominance began to wane.

The failings of these clubs led to a shift of power within the Eredivisie. The first team to strike was AZ. Under the guidance of Co Adriaanse and successor Louis van Gaal and with the financial backing of banker Dirk Scheringa, the club managed to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2005. When they lifted the Eredivisie title in 2009, it was the first time since 1981 that a side from outside the top three had been crowned champions. Incidentally, AZ were also title winners on that occasion. The side contained several Feyenoord and Ajax youth products, who never had a chance to breakthrough at their original clubs, mainly due to expensive, mediocre buys. Next up was FC Twente, who themselves had nearly gone out of existence only a few years previously. With a side partly built with money earned from the sales of former Ajax youth players Elia and Braafheid, they picked up the 2010 Eredivisie title.

With Feyenoord perilously close to bankruptcy in this period, a new era started for the Rotterdam side. The focus was once again on youth players and with the sales of Fer (FC Twente), Wijnaldum and Castaignos (Internazionale), the club started a process of recovering their financial situation. And with a starting eleven only containing two bought players and two loanees, the club returned to its roots. The same goes for Ajax. After the departure of Martin Jol, Frank de Boer has collected up two titles in as many seasons, with only three players who did not come through DeToekomst, the famous youth academy of the club. It is a visible trend throughout the Eredivisie: the game between FC Groningen and Feyenoord on 30^th October 2011 had a stunning nine Dutch youth internationals between them. Five years ago, this game only featured one. The European performance of the Dutch clubs has been of increasing quality as well: In the last five years, the last year has consequently earned more points on the UEFA-coefficient ranking than the former.

It seems the small nation has once again re-invented itself and Dutch clubs are eager to show Europe their new found potential. Frank de Boer already claimed that his Ajax-side ‘can beat any team in the world’. A tad optimistic, but it’s an example of the belief the Dutch club sides have at the moment. A resemblance to the aforementioned David, who in the end outwitted his much more powerful opponent. And who knows, maybe a Dutch side can stun the footballing world once again in the near future.

Laten we beginnen met de twee spitsen die de afgelopen weken de temperatuur van dit koude kikkerlandje verschrikkelijk deden oplopen: Robin van Persie en Klaas Jan Huntelaar. Akkoord, topscorer in de Premier League en de Bundesliga ben je niet zomaar. Wie echter een kleine analyse maakt van beide spelers, kijkend naar zowel hun functioneren in clubverband als hun prestaties bij het Nederlands Elftal, ontkomt er niet aan de feiten onder ogen te zien.

Arsenal FC en Schalke 04, twee internationaal gerespecteerde clubs, zijn zo’n beetje de laatsten in Europa, samen met het AC Milan van Zlatan Ibrahimovic en het Udinese van Antonio Di Natale, die hun elftal volledig in dienst van de Grote Afmaker laten spelen. Waar van dit viertal Ibrahimovic nog een solide verdediging achter zich heeft staan, spelen de andere genoemde verenigingen een bijrol in de strijd om de landstitel.

Huntelaar scoorde toch ook als een trein bij het Nederlands elftal? Dat klopt volledig. Ondergetekende was er dan ook een voorstander van geweest het Nederlands elftal in de voorhoede om deze man heen te bouwen, vanwege diens statische rol in een beweeglijk en creatief geheel. Dat bewees zich keer op keer, met name als Oranje de tegenstander overliep en met speels gemak de helft van de tegenstander zich volledig kon toeëigenen.

Van Persie daarentegen draaide vorig WK in precies dezelfde rol ook uitermate stroef. Drogredenen als dat hij ‘goed in het teambelang’ speelde, met daarbij de verwijzing naar de – met uiterst pover spel en een niet geringe hoeveelheid geluk behaalde – tweede plaats, brachten hem dit EK opnieuw in deze herkenbare situatie. Maar daarbij: hoeveel grote, belangrijke duels hebben Huntelaar en Van Persie gespeeld in clubverband? Nagenoeg nul, want daarvoor was de kwaliteit van hun medespelers te dun en daardoor de weg naar continentale prijzen al vlug afgesneden.

Maar dan is er nog een belangrijker reden waarom men niet al te zeer dramatisch moet doen. Sterker nog, 21 belangrijkere redenen: de rest van de selectie. Het zou flauw zijn om nu nog te zeuren over wie wel en wie er niet bij had moeten zijn. Dat had niet zoveel uitgemaakt. Tegen Denemarken misschien – dat was een hecht collectief dat uiterst effectief profiteerde van de zwakke plekken bij een tegenstander met in principe elf betere spelers op het veld. Echter tegen Duitsland en Portugal betonen de 2-1 nederlagen zich slechts waterige afspiegelingen van wat er daadwerkelijk aan de hand was.

Bovendien: als alleen kwaliteit, tactiek en fitheid de doorslag zouden geven, zou de spanning in het door ons zo geliefde spelletje ver te zoeken zijn. Je verliest ook wel eens van een mindere ploeg (in feite wat Brazilië tijdens het WK 2010 dus overkwam) en je wint wel eens van een betere (wat geen onmogelijkheid was geweest, tegen Duitsland en in mindere mate Portugal).

De kentering zette zich in toen de spelers van het Nederlands elftal, Mark van Bommel, Robin van Persie en Wesley Sneijder voorop, zich bijna onoverwinnelijk begonnen te wanen. Dat begon ergens vorig jaar, toen men inderdaad een paar hele aardige wedstrijden afleverde tegen landen uit voornamelijk de derde en de vierde categorie. Maar die serie was nauwelijks aan de gang of het verval sloop er al in, met de 11-0 overwinning op San Marino als scharnierpunt.

Sindsdien blonk het Nederlands elftal uit in moeizaam spel met de voeten, uitmondend in dit niet vreemde resultaat. Voor het eerste sinds 1980 in twaalf deelnames niet door de eerste ronde van een eindtoernooi. Zo slecht is dat niet voor dit mini-landje. Maar voor de korte termijn zou ik niet al teveel hoop hebben…

Goh, wat hebben we gelachen om die gekke Marco van Basten. Romano Denneboom, Dave van den Bergh, Nicky Hofs, Martijn Meerdink; ze mochten onder de Utrechter allemaal hun debuut maken. In hun verdere carrière is pijnlijk duidelijk geworden dat ze niet bepaald Oranje-waardig waren. Wat veel mensen echter vergeten is dat hij ook Boulahrouz van RKC liet doorbreken. En van Persie een kans gaf. Nog sterker: Maar liefst acht van de 23 internationals aanwezig in Polen en Oekraïne speelden hun eerste interland onder van Basten, terwijl zeven daarvan inmiddels meer dan 30 interlands hebben verzameld.

Bert van Marwijk is de afgelopen vier jaar een stuk conservatiever geweest. Al zijn debutanten zijn goed te verdedigen. Een heel scala aan jongelingen kreeg de kans tegen Oekraïne in de eerste wedstrijd na de WK-finale. Jetro Willems mocht op komen draven nadat Erik Pieters geblesseerd raakte. Hij was op zijn beurt weer vervanger van Giovanni van Bronckhorst, die in 2010 met pensioen ging. Van der Wiel mocht bij gebrek aan een rechtsback in de selectie rekenen op een basisplaats. Luuk de Jong werd gebracht als spits voor de aftakelende Ruud van Nistelrooij. Keepers werden er ook geselecteerd. Van der Sar en Timmer waren immers respectievelijk gestopt en niet goed genoeg. Bovendien braken er de afgelopen jaren met Krul, Vorm en Velthuizen de nodige keeperstalenten door. Centraal achterin kregen ook een aantal jongens de kans, al was dat vooral de eerste twee jaar onder Van Marwijk. Niet gek, want zowel Heitinga als Mathijsen zijn nooit doorgegroeid naar de echte top.

Allemaal heel logisch dus. Dat is ook misschien wel het woord dat Bert van Marwijk het best omschrijft. Waar Johan Cruijff vaak claimt dat iets logisch is terwijl de gemiddelde voetballiefhebber er geen reet van snapt, is van Marwijk begrijpelijk. Vandaar dat hij ook zo lang geliefd was. Nu lijkt het zijn ondergang te worden.

Want ondanks de pogingen die hij ondernam, heeft hij weinig spelers echt een kans gegeven. Uit een bepaald soort angst. Assistkoning Narsingh die tot de voorbereiding geen minuut in het Nederlands Elftal-shirt speelde, je kan het snappen, het is een jonge jongen. Al zouden velen de rappe buitenspeler graag eens een keer aan het werk willen zien.  Dat Braafheid ondanks nog geen 50 competitiewedstrijden in de laatste vijf jaar afgelopen seizoen nog een keer een basisplaats heeft gekregen is zelfs bespottelijk te noemen. Maar ook begrijpelijk. Net zoals het begrijpelijk is dat een speler als John thuisbleef ten faveure van Dirk Kuijt. Er zijn meer voorbeelden. De Vrij, Martins Indi, Gouweleeuw, Anita, Dost, Büttner, Maher, Clasie: Velen hebben een beter seizoen gekend dan menig Nederlands Elftal-speler. Maar dat je je zeker moet voelen over zo’n risico is ook logisch. Logisch. Zijn we weer.

Van Marwijk is gewoon een logische trainer. Maar op het moment dat dit Nederlands Elftal een geniale ingeving nodig had, gaf hij niet thuis. Want Bert is Bert. Geen genie, maar wel een prima trainer.  Niets minder, maar ook absoluut niets meer. Helaas hadden we dat wel nodig.
