A few years ago a friend gifted me a bromine element cube because we thought it was a cool science thing to have. It was sealed in a glass ampule and put into 2x2 inch acrylic cube on top of that. However I think the ampule was faulty and not sealed properly. Because after some time I noticed the orange color pushing into the acrylic but nothing had left the cube yet. I forgot about the cube and it was collecting dust on a bookshelf in my room for about 2-3 years and I just noticed now the orange stuff had started to push its way out of the cube. I discarded the cube and now I am very very worried about my health. I spend a lot of time in my room. The cube is very small and there’s still a good amount of liquid in there I think it’s supposed to be only 1-2ML of liquid in the ampule. But I’m sure there had been some trace amounts of gas leaking into my room this entire time. Is this type of thing common with this reaction, I thought Fe/HCl and was such a foolproof thing?&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Title. Reduced nitrobenzene with steel wool and concentrated hcl, very loosely following the procedure in vogels, except with iron instead of tin(I heard it works the same). I had a lot of big like lavalamp looking boiling and there was no effervesence of hydrogen despite it being quite exothermic and everything looked really good, and I just kept adding iron until it stopped dissolving and was just floating around in the liquid(definitely a molar excess I am sure)and then I went to neutralize it, where I got a bunch of horrible brown and black precipitate, and a purplish red mother liquor. I figured it was just various iron salts precipitating out so I filtered it off(it was horribly slow) and moved on to the steam distillation. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Aaaand nothing. Didn&amp;#39;t distill out any organics whatsoever, aniline or even a less reduced azobenzene/phenylhydroxylamine nonesense which if they were present I would think would come over in a steam distillation regardless. Aside from a like maybe 1ml of nitrobenzene at the very start(this was on almost a mole scale by the way), just pure water distilling over.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I figured it failed and I didn&amp;#39;t really feel like figuring out why, I just kinda left it on the table for about 6 months, and when i finally decided to test it, I ended up finding the organics in the precipitate. I dissolved all the precipitate up in HCl, and I figured it was all just iron salts and it would all dissolve up clear but there was leftover a large pile of brown gunk and then a really cloudy yellow/brown solution of iron chloride. I tested this brown gunk and it was resistant to pretty much everything I tried: &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Resistant to heat and appears to be kind of fire retardant as well, I tried burning the filter napkin after I squeezed all the water out(great test I know) and it was like really tough to burn although it did char after like 30 seconds blasted with a blow torch. The raw powder heated in a beaker did basically nothing either.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Resistant to hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, although I think it decomposed when I boiled it in sulfuric acid, its hard to tell if the acid went black from the powder or black from oxidizing it to carbon. Resistant to fusion with NaOH as well, although there was a really faint ammonia/even fainter organic amine smell in the fumes as I cooked it, but the fumes were not even strong enough to turn a ph paper...&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;On searching I found a single source of one guy who was reducing some substituted nitrobenzenes and the difficulties he had were in isolating the reduced product from quote: really expensive shoe polish, which was apparently a self condensation product. I could see this being possible as I read as well(in vogels I think) that the reduction proceeds through a complex with the metal, that then must be decomposed to give the aniline. My only idea is that maybe I precipitated this complex on accident, left it for 6 months, where it self polymerized, into whatever crap sat out in the cup, and is now just garbage. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Thoughts? I thought this was supposed to be a very common transformation, yet I can&amp;#39;t really find many cases of results like this. If I were to try it again, is there anything wrong with the procedure: a bunch of steel wool or iron filings is added to a flask of nitrobenzene, then concentrated hcl is added so that the solution maintains a close to boiling temperature, say 80c or so, and more hcl and iron is added until it stops dissolving and the solution is monophasic( I dont know if the leftover iron bits is relevant I just feel like once the metal stops reacting its probably finished, I definitely remember it being one phase though), the solution is made strongly basic with NaOH, the iron salts filtered off, and aniline is steam distilled out. Iron is more reactive than tin, would zinc be even better here? For a long time I’ve been using a chemical solution that someone gave me years ago, but I have no idea what it actually is. The results are fantastic and much better than anything else I’ve tried.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Recently I started trying to figure out what the chemical might be. After searching through various forums and discussions, most people suggested that it was probably hydrofluoric acid (HF) or ammonium bifluoride. I managed to obtain both and tested them.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Surprisingly, neither produced results even remotely similar to the mystery solution. Instead of quickly creating a uniform frosted finish, both took a very long time and mainly formed a soft, paste-like layer on the glass surface that could be easily scraped off. The etched finish underneath was poor compared to what I’m used to.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I still have a small amount of the original solution left. It is transparent but has a slight greenish tint.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I’m aware that identifying an unknown chemical from appearance alone is difficult, but I’m curious whether anyone has encountered something similar.       <content:encoded>&lt;!-- SC_OFF --&gt;&lt;div class="md"&gt;&lt;p&gt;Hello and good day. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Firstly I’d like to apologise for this long post/question. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I tried using the search function but could not find any related topics/discussion. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Is it possible to obtain heavy metal results exceeding 1 million mg/kg in a sample?&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Background as below:&lt;br/&gt; Our lab received a solder dross sample and customer requested for heavy metals analysis. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;We digested the sample using microwave method (based on USEPA 846 SW 3051 A), and then analysed the sample via ICP-OES (based on USEPA 846 SW 6010 B). &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;We entered the sample weight (digestion) in the ICP software and results were converted by the software from mg/L to mg/kg. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;When analysing the sample, we had to dilute the sample because the result for ‘Tin’ exceeded our calibration range (1 mg/L - 10 mg/L). The sample was diluted with 1,000 dilution factor and the result fell within the calibration range (about 5 mg/L). So I placed a wet cloth over it, unfortunately the water short circuted it.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;next phone is jio phone while driving that phone fell out of my pocket and a heavy truck crushed it. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;My next phone is my dad&amp;#39;s old blackberry z10, while playing with my firends. Accidentally display is damaged but still working. I love that phone soon I will replace the display.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;My next phone is Tecno mobile with 7000mah battery. That mobile became 1 year old. It suddenly feel to lag and produce lot of heat. So I ordered samsung M35. On that M35 delivery day I was working in a college project. That was the dumpest thing I ever do. In 2 days I need to submit final year. I was in hurry, I used that chat gpt. From that moment I stopped using it in important studies. I asked chat gpt a Idea about non conductive liquid coolant for PC. There is only one liquid that liquid is also flourine or flouride something like that. That’s very dangerous to produce it. Then chat gpt suggested me benzene. Yes benzene......... I submerged my Techno mobile in that benzene solution. Benzene will soften and slightly melt that polymer in my phone and it affected mobile display. It&amp;#39;s not chat gpt mistake it was mine. The dumbest chemical engineer. The brand reformulated, and, along with every other brand, it&amp;#39;s all no longer sour- it&amp;#39;s chalky and relatively tasteless. I was taking care of a beaker previously containing very concentrated silver nitrate solution after I prepared it from nitric acid and silver metal. I was stupid and didn’t wear gloves, and a drop fell on my thumb when I was moving the beaker. Here it is a day later (please don’t comment on my finger nails lol). I made a free interactive lab that models how chemicals affect plants, and I am hoping for feedback on the cellular and molecular side.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;You choose a chemical, apply it to a plant, and see the effects across three levels: the whole plant (macro), the cells (micro), and the molecular level.       <content:encoded>&lt;!-- SC_OFF --&gt;&lt;div class="md"&gt;&lt;p&gt;I ran a small cross-validation experiment and I&amp;#39;d like the sub to try to break it.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Across 30 transition metals (3d/4d/5d, groups 3–12, neutral ground-state occupancies), I tested whether a one-parameter descriptor — how close the d-shell sits to half-filled, d_balance = 1 − |N_d − 5|/5 — predicts the number of representative oxidation states.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Under leave-one-series-out cross-validation it had the lowest error of the simple baselines I tried:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;ul&gt; &lt;li&gt;d_balance: LOO-RMSE 1.23 (R² ≈ 0.55)&lt;/li&gt; &lt;li&gt;electron count (N_d): 1.65&lt;/li&gt; &lt;li&gt;group: 1.66&lt;/li&gt; &lt;li&gt;period + group: 1.75&lt;/li&gt; &lt;li&gt;atomic number Z: essentially no single-feature signal (R² ≈ 0.03)&lt;/li&gt; &lt;/ul&gt; &lt;p&gt;Richness peaks at d⁵, and the oxidation &lt;em&gt;span&lt;/em&gt; behaves similarly (LOO-RMSE 1.48).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I want to be upfront about the weak spots, because they&amp;#39;re why I&amp;#39;m posting and not claiming a result:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;ul&gt; &lt;li&gt;That d⁵ is &amp;quot;special&amp;quot; is textbook (exchange energy / half-filled stability). The only non-trivial part is that a single half-filled-distance feature out-predicts electron count — not that the peak exists.&lt;/li&gt; &lt;li&gt;The d⁵ vs d⁴/d⁶ contrast is positive (mean 5.00 vs 3.75, Δ = +1.25), but the 95% bootstrap interval [−0.35, 2.85] crosses zero. Small sample (5 vs 4 elements). So: suggestive, not established.&lt;/li&gt; &lt;/ul&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;My actual questions:&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;ol&gt; &lt;li&gt;I have &lt;em&gt;not&lt;/em&gt; yet compared this against chemical-property baselines — electronegativity, ionization energy, ionic/covalent radius. My worry is that a U-shaped function peaking at half-filling is just re-encoding one of these. This was to replace our Lachat FIA.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Our commissioning process has been dragging on, in large part due to the AACE software having a recurring memory access violation error. We were wondering if there are any other users out there of SEAL SFAs and whether they have encountered software bugs, and if you have, did you find any solutions? &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;We have tried installing the AACE software on 4 different computers, including fresh installs. One common factor is they all run Windows 11, so we&amp;#39;re keen to hear from anyone using AACE on windows 11. The only other lab we know of with a SEAL AA is running an AA3 on windows 10 without issue.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;For us, the issue seems to be fixed when we have a fresh system install, but over the course of a week or two at random points we get a windows &amp;quot;Memory Access Violation&amp;quot; pop up and the system falls over requiring a full restart. The pop-up can occur at any point though seems more frequent if you&amp;#39;re interacting with the software/system in any way.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;We&amp;#39;re frankly at a point where we&amp;#39;re considering returning the instrument as in its current state it is clearly not fit for purpose, not even able to complete a single run.
