Mr Straw’s spokesman said he would co-operate fully

A Conservative MP has alleged that Justice Secretary Jack Straw’s local constituency party received an impermissible £2,000 donation in 2005.

Ben Wallace, MP for Lancaster and Wyre, claims the donation from Westminster International Consultants LLP was disallowed under electoral law.

One of the partners had said the firm did not operate in the UK, he added.

The Electoral Commission said a complaint had been made. Mr Straw said he would co-operate fully.

To be a permissible political donor, a company must be trading in the UK.

Blackburn Constituency Labour Party accepted the donation on 1 April 2005 from Westminster International Consultants and registered it with the Electoral Commission.

On 15 July that year, Mr Straw declared the donation to Parliament’s Register of Members’ Interests.

In his declaration he said it had come from Westminster International Consultants and Siraj Karbhari, a partner in the firm.

The London Evening Standard quotes Mr Karbhari as saying he made the donation in a personal capacity, but may have used the chequebook of one of his companies. If so, he said, he had done it by mistake.

The Electoral Commission says donations can be from individuals if they are UK citizens, which Mr Karbhari is, but must be in the name of the person making them, not of a third party.

Mr Wallace alleges that Dr Yusuf Karbhari, another partner in Westminster International Consultants, said in an interview with the Standard that the firm “didn’t carry out any business in the UK”.

A spokesman for Jack Straw said: “If, as we understand, a complaint has been made to the Electoral Commission, then Blackburn Constituency Labour Party and Jack Straw will of course co-operate fully with any request for information.”

Since both the blogosphere and the traditional media is abuzz today with the news about a cyberattack against Georgian official websites presumably organized by Russia (and I have already claimed that I believe the Russian hackers really did not need any special request to get started with the DDoS attack), I thought I’d mention another aspect of the situation that is remotely related to this one and proves my point again.A Russian-language blog reports today another story about Russian bloggers manipulating results of a poll on CNN website to demonstrate what exactly people think here about the conflict between Russia and Georgia over South Ossetia.

The story began when CNN decided to carry out a poll where respondents were supposed to answer one simple question: “Do you think Russia’s actions in Georgia are justified?” with two options available: 1) Yes, it’s peacekeeping and 2) No, it’s an invasion.

I believe CNN editors expected to receive opinions from the site’s main target audience (which definitely is not in Russia) but what it received instead were mainly votes from Russia with the first answer getting 92% of votes (or over 329 thousand of people).

How did this happen? Very simple actually. The information about the CNN poll quickly made it to the Russian blogosphere (it is impossible to determine where it all started because of the huge number of posts on the topic) and bloggers started encouraging their readers to go to CNN and vote for the first option. The news was quickly disseminated over an enormous number of the Russian blogs and the results were predictable: 92% supported the official point of view of the Russian government.

The poll is not active any more and no matter how hard I tried I could not find any archive for previous polls on CNN but I hope the screen shot in the beginning of the post is credible enough. I hope no one will suggest here that it was an organized campaign initiated by the governmental authorities in Russia. It just proves once again that Russian people - be it bloggers or hackers - will do exactly what they believe in without any invitation from the government.

TOKYO — A United States court-martial sentenced a marine to four years in prison on Friday for sexually abusing a 14-year-old Japanese girl, ending a case that had deepened anger over the American military presence in japan

The marine, Staff. Sgt. Tyrone Luther Hadnott, 38, pleaded guilty to “abusive sexual contact” at the court-martial at Camp Foster in Okinawa, but was cleared of rape, the United States military said. He was also given a dishonorable discharge.

In February, Mr. Hadnott, who was stationed at a base in Okinawa, was arrested after the girl accused him of raping her inside his car. The marine, who had given the girl a ride, denied the accusation but admitted pressing her down and trying to kiss her.

The incident caused widespread anger in Okinawa, home to most of the 40,000 members of the American military based in Japan, and led to protests by Japanese politicians, including Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.

On a visit to Japan in February, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice  expressed deep regret over the case.

Japanese anger subsided after the girl, who was criticized in the news media for getting into the car with the marine, withdrew her complaint and Japanese prosecutors dropped the charges against the serviceman.

“Even though he was not prosecuted under the Japanese judicial system, we found that there was enough evidence to prosecute him under the U.S. system,” Lt. Gen. Edward Rice, the commander of the United States forces in Japan, said at a news conference Friday.

The case was one of several involving American servicemen in Japan in recent months. Last month, Olatunbosun Ugbogu, 22, a Navy seaman who had been wanted for deserting his base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, was charged with killing a taxi driver over a dispute about a fare.
