Social networks are becoming a large amount of people’s everyday lives. Facebook and Twitter are places where people can reconnect and build relationships; finding long lost friends, relatives, and possibly spouses. Facebook and Twitter are also starting to become a major aspect in the college community, beneficial for some of the reasons we have listed below!

Facebook allows college students who have friends at there prospective homes to keep an overall connection, which is always important for freshman students who tend to get home sick often. Twitter also allows college students to keep an everyday update on there friends home and away especially for those who tweet and keep daily, hourly, and minute by minute action. It is important to stay in the loop when students are away from home, especially for athletes who tend to miss family get together’s and holiday breaks due to hectic sports schedules.

Teachers and students are also starting to use facebook as a communication resource during the semester, starting classroom groups so that students can keep in contact with other students and those in the same classes as them. This helps keep everyone connected in times when passing out phone numbers may not be the best route.

Schools as a whole are starting to use facebook and twitter to help get news out about student events, weather conditions, school news, sports events, and emergencies! This is a unique way of communicating because a lot of students tend to check their social network pages often and also get alert emails when new information is posted!

I believe both networks are an intricate part to the life of a college student and an important aspect in the college world as a whole. As we have found out, these networks mean so much more than just a way to pass time and chit chat with friends. They are becoming the “new way” on the college scene!

Apple has released its newest operating system, OS X Mountain Lion. It definitely has some amazing features that can benefit a lot of different individuals, especially when it comes to productivity. There are also a lot of features that simply make life more enjoyable. Below we decided to break it down a bit and list a few of our favorites and why!

1. Air Play Mirroring – For those of you who are familiar with “Apple Tv” and its mirroring feature for the I-pad, this is now a feature on your computer. You can mirror screen you computer to any television or high definition projector. This will help get a lot of work done, all while sitting in front of the TV. Ironic huh?

2. Dictation – Ever get tired of typing? Dictation is now on your computer anywhere there is a text box available. Just simply “say” it and your computer will type the rest. It also offers several different languages including German, french, and Spanish. This will make very productive while laying back and simply “speaking”

3. imessage – Similar to the ipad, imessage is now on your computer, which allows you to instant message anyone with an iphone, ipad, or imessage supported apple product. As long as you are connected through wifi, you are able to message anyone who is in your imessage contacts!

4. Notification center – OS X now allows your computer to have the same notification center as the iphone and ipad. This allows you to see all your information in one spot. It tells you everything from, “if you have a facebook message” all the way to “if you need to upgrade to the latest angry birds.” The notification center will definitely add a little edge to your work day!

These are our favorite updates, if you have any that you enjoy, please feel free to comment and tell us about it!

There are many reasons why different people do not take advantage of these vast social media platforms, we have decided to list a few from our experience!

1. Do not have time – Work, home, kids, sports, family, cook, clean, sleep, work, home, sports, etc. That is the typical Americans day. Where does social media even begin to fit in? Some see social media as a distraction in a world already full of busyness.

2. See no point – Some people just don’t see a point. “I have all my friends phone numbers,” stated one of our clients. Some are used to the old days of sending a message in a bottle, a letter in the mail, or simply picking up the phone. “What is the point of updating anyone, if they are important they would of received a phone call,” our client suggested. Some people just need a little bit of convincing.

3. Afraid – Fear keeps a lot of users from stepping out into the social media world. The fear of having to learn something that is completely out of ones comfort can definitely keep a baby bird in the nest. Social media is no different.

4. Too complicated – Some see these sites as too complicated or too much to keep up with. “Face book is forever changing” stated one of our clients. That is true, some changes aren’t always for the better in the users eyes. But most of the changes are simply updates, things to make things run a lot smoother. Still some people would rather not get involved with such drama.

5. No Internet – According to Huffingtonpost.com, approximately 40 percent of American households do not have high speed Internet at home. This could definitely effect a persons want for a social media presence.

6. No smart-phone – Along with no Internet, there are many Americans who still have yet to use a smartphone and some see no point in having a smart phone. Applications are the new crave. The ability to get apps for your favorite social media sites, allow for easy updates, searches, and responses to your peers.

There are ways around it all. There is the library. There are businesses and organizations willing to help. There are even folks our there willing to run these sites for you. Step out into the change, get connected!

Can you think of any reasons that we didn’t list? If so, comment and tell us below!
