coronavirus pandemic that came in December of 2019 brought with it a kind of
havoc that has changed our world forever. The crisis has cost our world more
than three million lives. Moreover, the trauma, chaos, and uncertainty with
which we are living are inexpressible. Covid not only damaged our whole system
but also unveiled the hidden weaknesses already present in our societies. The
collapse of the global economy, weakened multilateralism, the failure of
underdeveloped countries to provide basic health facilities have forced us to
look into our own ways. While the situation is still alarming as there are new
and unfamiliar features of Covid, we can’t help but wonder what is waiting for
us in the upcoming years. What kind of changes in global order are we
expecting? There is no doubt the pandemic has taught us many lessons that have
changed our perspective towards life and death. Although the crisis is
amplifying drastic effects and risks, there is hope for new beginnings if we
decide to take proper actions and strive to bring important changes.

    In
order for a better world, social inequity and discrimination must be abolished.
The covid crisis has exposed hideous injustices in our society and economic
inequalities. The pandemic is a revelation of many injustices and weaknesses
that already exist in our societies. People, who belong to lower socioeconomic
groups, are at far greater risk because of overcrowded homes, lack of
sanitation in slum areas, etc. Diseases like Covid always attack the most
vulnerable first. While the privileged people can afford to stay in homes, the
poor have no means to support their families and are more likely to suffer from
financial instability too. Those, who used to turn a blind eye to such
discrimination, have now seen the drastic outcome of such inequalities. It is
hard not to observe this cruel imbalance between humans. In order to prosper in
the post covid world, we need to do away with social prejudice and
inequality.

    In
the post-Covid world, we will have to focus on multilateralism and global
cooperation. The developing economies of the world have suffered drastically.
We need to find new ways for multilateralism to operate as global cooperation
has failed to provide support to developing countries. While the world faces
the worst humanitarian crisis after world war 2, the governments in third-world
countries are unable to take control of public health and social needs as their
underdeveloped fragile system cannot bear such pressure. In order to make post
covid world a better world, we need to make such changes that will put an end
to this power imbalance. The international community will have to come forward
in giving importance to the rights and needs of humans living in such
economies. Our focus should be on the global economy, health and
multilateralism.

    Post
covid world will create new priorities. We need a robust public health system.
Not only developing economies but also rich democracies collapsed while
fighting the destructions caused by covid. One of the main reasons for this was
the lack of public health problems from the presiding security discourse. In
Pakistan, less than two percent of GDP is spent on public health. We are facing
a global health crisis that is taking the lives of our people on daily basis.
This reflects the urgent need for a robust infrastructure concerning health
facilities. We need more hospitals, better health plans, and more powerful
infrastructure.

    During
this pandemic, it is impossible to ignore the fact that all humans have
suffered the loss in one way or another. Seeing death consume our loved ones is
pain without a voice; no set of words, no couple of months, and no intensity of
love can unroot it. Our combined sorrows and fears have connected us to each
other. The dread of the pandemic has made us question our outlook towards
humanity. Every day, we are learning that our similarities are way more in
number than our differences. We are all afraid the same way and we all struggle
in a quite similar manner when met with pain, death, or tragedy. We are in
desperate need of collective empathy and solidarity. While we may never recover
from the loss we have faced, we will hopefully grow kinder and more
compassionate towards each other.

    Covid
has changed our world forever. While we have suffered drastically, we can make
such choices that will reshape our world for a better place. History has proved
that decisions made during such a crisis change the world in the upcoming
years. We need to take collective action to grow our economies as such that
they will work for economic prosperity and safety for all. The pandemic has
made us learn a lot of lessons. One of the most important lessons is the
necessity of working together when we are facing such a problem that impacts
all of us. The world is more powerful when we are all united.

The Unreached Journey of Pakistan day

The journey of Muslims in the sub-continent, which
started right after the war of 1857, has encountered every kind of brutality,
prejudice, and viciousness. The English emperors not only overthrew the rule
but also continued to dehumanize Muslims for years. Eventually, they barricaded
them into complete isolation, misery, and bloodshed. The price Muslims paid,
just because they belonged to a minority group, was massive. Both the Hindus and
the English implicated that they did not want Muslims around them. Although
this period in the history of Muslims was intolerable, there was strong Muslim
leadership that continuously worked for the betterment and progress of Muslims.
This strong leadership was the reason the Muslims’ movement reached the
milestone of Lahore resolution in 1940, in which Quaid e Azam declared the
decision of all Muslims that was an independent state, Pakistan. For seven more
years of sacrifice and struggle, Muslims got their independent state on 14th
August 1947.

           Tired,
tormented, and agonized Muslims, in the hope of liberty, peace, and a better
future, were now in Pakistan that was supposed to be safe heaven. The nature of
struggles changed after the partition. There was still a long journey ahead,
and that was to make Pakistan a strong state. It would not be incorrect to
claim that Pakistanis were determined to achieve the excellence required to
make a country earn a prestigious place among great nations. Finally, youngsters,
who were not allowed to dream before partition, could be seen hoping for a
better tomorrow. In the upcoming years, a visionary Pakistan was in construction.

           On 23rd
March 2021, after 74 years of waiting and hoping, one is forced to think about
what could have gone wrong in “the land of pure.” We were supposed to make this
country an example of religious harmony and peace. We had promised to make
Pakistan a state in which there would have no place for extremism, inequality,
discrimination, or barbarity. This state was made while fighting against hate
and intolerance. Where did we go wrong that now there is a culture of bigotry
and loathing that is continuously perpetuating? One is forced to look at all
the chapters in the history since partition, and one gets confused about
whether to talk about the failure of political leadership or the uncertainty
that came along with four wars against India or the instability three martial
laws brought with them. On one side, there is the deceit of civil leadership,
that corrupted the whole system. On the other hand, a lot of damage came from
military governments. With such history, problems like poverty, unemployment,
illiteracy, economic decline, and extremism were inevitable.

           Not only did we
fail to make our foundation strong, but we have also built such a system that
our nation and people have not even a shred develop in their intellect and
wisdom. We are facing a crisis in which forces like authoritarianism and
ignorance are growing. While in the modern age, there is space for
enlightenment, democracy, and tolerance; we are still stagnated in the
superstitions and social norms that have no place in the modern world.
Stagnation of reasoning does not lead towards progress. A society thrives when
its people are allowed creativity, exploration, and critical inquiry.
Advancement in science and technology demands freedom of thinking. Islam
encourages queries and freedom of thought. In Surah Al Imran, Holy Quran says,
“Behold in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of
night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding ...”
Unfortunately, we have secluded ourselves from any kind of learning and
research.

           It is
heartbreaking that the journey, that started so long ago and that had cost us
our lands, lives, and dreams, is still incomplete. But there is always hope for
a better world. It is important to understand that systemic changes only occur
when the root issues are addressed. Change starts at the ground level. In
today’s world, Illiteracy is our major barrier towards a successful Pakistan.
People, who do not have the privilege of education, are unable to develop their
intellectual skills. Consequently, they adhere to the same primitive thinking that
is rotting our system. The only way to end this is to make people understand
their rights and responsibilities as citizens of Pakistan. Only with unity and
a genuine sense of brotherhood, we can help and lead Pakistan towards a better
future. The journey of Pakistan day will meet its destination when every
citizen enjoys his basic fundamental rights. We need a state where social
justice is established through the law, a state where there is socio-political
education in schools. We want a Pakistan that has an environment of equality,
universal brotherhood, and unity. Together, we can strive and make Pakistan the
Quaid’s Pakistan.

After world war 1, different agreements and treaties took place between Turkey and the colonizers and these treaties did include the possibility of the Kurds people having their own state. But with Mustafa Kamal taking over Turkey and making his government, the possibility for Kurds to have a separate land dissolved. And then another treaty, Treaty of Lussane, divided the region. The boundaries were drawn like that they will divide the regions based on religion and ethnicities but they were done in a way to serve the colonial Powers’ interest too. No wonder the region has never been completely stable.

They had their own culture and traditions. They were ancient people and they were not ready to merge into another culture. What the colonizer did was that they made another nation called Iraq that never existed before in the world. They used the Kurds who were living in the northern part of Iraq (directly attached to the Turkey border) as a buffer against turkey because Turkey newly emerged at that time and the colonizers saw them as a threat. Well, the colonizers used Kurds. President Winston Churchill of America at that time promised the Kurds their homeland. Then European treaties promised them a homeland. But they still do not have their homeland. They were used by Europe to protect against Turkey.

After World War 1, the ethnic nationals were seen as a threat and they were considered dangerous. There was an erasure of Turkish ethnic identity. The Kurds were killed, they were displaced and they were moved across the country, the names of their towns were changed. Massacres occurred against Turkish Kurds. Massacres like the Dersim Rebellion and Zilan massacre (1930) killed thousands of Turkish Kurds. The use of Kurdish language, dress and names were banned and the Kurdish inhabitant area was under Martial Law until 1946. In an attempt to deny Kurds' existence, turkey referred to them as “Mountain Turks”. The use of the Kurdish language remained illegal. What happened as a result in 1978 was a push back from the Kurds when they adapted communism and they made a party Kurdish Workers Party (PKK). And in 1984, they initiated a war against the government in Turkey. An open war started between PKK and Turkey resulted in thousands of more deaths of Kurdish people.

French mandate lasted until 1943 and the French troops left Syria completely in 1946. But in the 1960s Kurds were stripped off their basic human rights. They were forced to migrate from their towns. A lot happened in the 1980s. Saddam Hussain was in government. He committed horrible atrocities to the Syrian Kurds. And in 1988, he decided to drop chemical weapons (Mustard gas, tabun gas, sarin gas) on them in Halabja. Halabja is a city in the Kurdistan region in Syria. These were the weapons that made people separate their joints, liquefy their organs and crush their own skulls. Innocent people died and they died horribly. 5000 people died just in 2 hours on 16 March 1988. 10,000 people were damaged going to be dead in the following weeks. Later, Kurds were taken by Saddam Hussain’s troops and they were put in mass graves.

It marked the beginning of the Jihadist militant group ISIS. They came in 2013. Many significant portions in North were homes to Kurdish people. They were eventually conquered by the ISIS. But Kurdish militias successfully fought back. At this point, the united states backed the Kurds with air support and on the ground training against the ISIS. In 2015, Syrian democratic forces or SDF was formed by the alliance between Kurdish and non-Kurdish people in the North of Syria primarily to push ISIS back. An autonomous Kurdish territory established in the North of Syria. By 2019, the SDF effectively broke the ISIS stronghold in the north. The ISIS fighters were kept in prisons. There were around 11000 captives. US military bases were already in Syria and their troops began patrolling the Turkish Syrian border.

He thought they were somehow linked to PKK in Turkey which has fought the Turkish government for decades. PKK has been fighting for the autonomy of Kurds in turkey. Turkish government always rejected their right to form an autonomous state.

Syrian Kurds developed a Kurdish Governed territory in Syria and Turkish Kurds wanted the same for years. A territory of Kurds in Syria could inspire the same in Turkey and that was why Erdogan saw it all as a threat. He launched attacks on Syria multiple times because of this same reason. An attack was made in 2016. Another one to destroy SDF was made in 2018.

The Syrian war forced 3.6 million refugees into Turkey. People of Turkey turned against Erdogan because of the influx of refugees. In the elections of 2019, he lost 11 seats in local elections compared to the seats he won in previous elections. It happened in March 2019. To make it even worse for Erdogan, a pro-Kurdish party won 8 mayoral seats and helped the opposition candidates to win across the country. The Kurds of Turkey became the key in the result of elections of 2019.

A safe zone that was on the border of Turkey and Syria. He claimed that the purpose of the safe zone is to put back the Syrian refugees into that safe zone. Because of the same political pressure after the US and Russia refused to help, Erdogan and his government threatened to move into Syria on their own. There was just one obstacle and that was the US as the US was a military supporter of the Kurds. US troops were still in Northern Syria.

The two (Turkey and USA) agreed to a safe zone on the border that they would both patrol together. The zone was about 5 km into Northern Syria. SDF (The Kurds) cooperated by withdrawing some of their forces from the zone. But well the agreement was not enough for Erdogan. Only a month later, he proposed a much larger zone in the UN. The zone was of 30 km and length of 480 km into Northern Syria to enable 2 million refugees. Erdogan approached Donald Trump and after that president of the United States ordered the withdrawal of US troops from Syria leaving the SDF in Syria on their own to face the barbarity of Turkish forces in the coming months. Trump broke the US alliance with Kurds forces and left the zone abandoning Syrian Kurds to genocide.

This invasion was brutal and barbaric. Hospitals were filled with Kurdish people. Families and unarmed people tried to move out of the land. Because of this chaotic situation in northern Syria, the prisons who had ISIS captives couldn’t be any longer guarded. Hundreds of ISIS captives escaped.

With the help of the USA, SDF was created in Syria. The alliance between Kurds in Syria and the USA was never accepted by Turkey. Turkey was happy about the removal of this alliance. Again, Kurds were left homeless.
