Kwashiorkor

Sometimes when we think of hunger, we get these vague sort of ideas about what it feels like when we’re really hungry and then imagining that several times over and then you have someone who is starving to death. We see pictures of those who are starving and it looks awful, but can we know how it feels?

Kwashiorkor is a childhood protein deficiency disease. Basically what that means is that the child is not getting protein and also essential nutrients. When you see pictures of starving children with their tummies sticking out, this is often kwashiorkor, as an extended abdomen is a symptom of the disease.

It lowers the body’s resistance, making children susceptible to disease even if they receive a vaccination because their body is unable to produce antibodies.

I invite you to watch the following video. It is NOT easy to watch, but I think we all joined this challenge to understand more deeply the injustice in the world…which means we need to understand the pain in the world.

ACTION STEP: Educating yourself today on kwashiorkor is an important first action step. Consider taking time this month to fast from a day’s worth of meals you would normally eat and donate the money you would have spent to an important organization fighting hunger in the world.

Of the many topics we’re covering in the Social Justice Challenge, hunger is one we might all think of immediately when we think of the world’s imbalance.

It’s not comfortable to think about, because most of us have easy access to food. But it is essential to actual living.

To kick things off this month, I’m asking you to post an image on your blog…something you think about when you hear the word hunger.

Find a picture that represents hunger to you, post it (feel free to add a little commentary) and then come back here and add your link. If you don’t have a blog, feel free to find an image and leave the link in comments. Let’s start opening up our hearts to the world of hurt this month’s theme is going to bring us. But don’t worry! The practical steps for this month will be more obvious and easy to do.

Today is World Water Day!

March 22nd (today!) is World Water Day. We covered the topic of water last month but obviously, it’s something that we will never stop learning about or taking action. (Plus, it’s never too late to go back and cover our past topics.)

Thanks to author Mitali Perkins post today, we’ll be adding more picture books to our water resource page. While at Mitali’s, I discovered this great video in honor of World Water Day.

Mom It Forward hosts a twitter chat every Tuesday night and tonight’s topic goes hand in hand with this months social justice topic: Ending Violence Against Women World Wide. Chat begins Tuesday, March 16, 9-11 p.m. EST (TONIGHT) with the twitter hashtag #gno (Girls Night Out). You can find out all of the details about the chat on the Mom It Forward site.

I just saw this article via Twitter and after reading this beautiful essay on Glamour I knew that I needed to share it with you.

Scarred by years of sexual abuse, Maia Morgan could have given up, turned inward, self-destructed. Instead, she soared away from her haunted past. The story that won our sixth-annual essay contest is heartbreaking and hopeful.
