Sony to Resume PlayStation Network Services, Says “No Evidence” Credit Card Info Stolen

Sony will resume some PlayStation Network services and beef up its security nearly two weeks after a hacker attack forced Sony to shut it down.
The company made the announcements during a press conference in Tokyo. Kaz Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president and the likely successor to CEO Howard Stringer, started by offering “our deepest and sincerest apologies” for the outage of the PlayStation network, as well as apologizing to customers whose personal information has been compromised. Hirai and two other Sony executives bowed deeply, a Japanese custom for apologizing.

Hirai confirmed that lots of users account information was stolen as the result of a hacker attack that has forced Sony to shut down PSN and Qriocity services for the last two weeks. Sony says that it was first alerted to the attack on April 20 and has been working with authorities and two security firms to investigate.

“This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers but our entire industry,” Hirai said. “These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security.”

The big question though is whether or not credit card data was stolen, a possibility that has raised questions from the U.S. Congress. Hirai and two other Sony executives repeatedly asserted that they have found “no evidence” that credit card data or billing information has been stolen. Hirai wouldn’t rule out the possibility, however, which likely explains why Sony is asking customers to check their credit card statements just in case.

To prevent an attack like this one from happening again, Sony says it has moved PSN and Qrioicity services to a new data center and implemented new security measures, including additional firewalls, enhanced encryption and automated software monitoring. The company has also created a new position: Chief Information Security Officer, a senior executive who will report to Sony Chief Information Officer Shinji Hasejima. In addition, Sony will require all users to change their passwords, but with additional security measures to verify identity.

Sony says it will resume some PlayStation Network services in the next week as a result. This includes restoration of online gameplay, Qriocity music services, friend lists, chat functionality and movie rental services. It is also launching a “Welcome Back” campaign as an apology to users for what has transpired. Sony is offering affected users a 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus and some free software downloads. Qriocity customers will be receiving 30 additional days of service for free.

New Release: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Trailer

The epic finale of the Harry Potter film series is coming to theaters on July 15, and its trailer just hit iTunes and YouTube.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the seventh and final movie in the Harry Potter film series; Part 1 of Deathly Hallows premiered in November, 2010.

Will Part 2 be in 3D? Part 1 of Deathly Hallows was not released in 3D, because of difficulty converting the film from 2D to 3D, according to IMDb. But the film still broke the record for the Potter franchise’s biggest opening weekend, grossing $125 million and going on to earn $954 million worldwide, the third-highest grossing film of 2010.

The upcoming Part 2 will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX formats.

1. Get Visual

If you’re at a loss for words, try sharing pictures or videos instead. Multimedia adds a new layer to your tweets and lets followers into your business’s otherwise-unknown world.

Gregory’s Coffee, an espresso bar with three locations in New York City, operates a lively Twitter stream, loaded with behind-the-scenes photos of latte art, pastries and employees. Brands are using photo sharing apps in creative ways to bring fans closer to the action. Using apps, like Instagram and PicPlz, smartphone photographers can take advantage of photo-editing tools, including filters, that can make any picture look more interesting.

2. Get Physical

Social technologies such as Twitter aim to connect people. But the digital world has, in some cases, made it more challenging to genuinely connect with those around us. Tweets such as this add a personal and intimate flair that showcases a business’s appreciation for its fans.

4. Get Inspired

It’s difficult to be creative all the time — when you’re in a linguistic rut, turn to other tweeters for inspiration. For small businesses, the first stop should always be those who are tweeting about you. When a jewel of an @mention appears, retweet it. Besides sharing a customer’s positive story with your followers, you’ll also be empowering that tweeter. It’s a great feeling when a brand you admire acknowledges your tweet with a simple retweet.

Trapp Family Lodge, a 2,500-acre resort in Stowe, Vermont, spends most of its Twitter stream on retweeting satisfied guests and upcoming visitors. When a user posts a image from the estate or calls out a great experience, you’re sure to find it on the Trapp Family Lodge Twitter account. Such tweets also double as customer reviews for the company, which can drive your business even more.

5. Get Smart

Twitter is all about value — users want value out of the accounts they’re following. Value can come in the form of exclusive deals, contests and even expertise. While deals and contests may take a bit more legwork to get off the ground, expertise is something that any small business owner or rep should be able to share at the drop of a hat.

Face Place, a spa with locations in Los Angeles and New York, dedicates its Twitter stream to providing daily skin care tips. Most recently, the spa has tweeted about makeup-removal tips, how blood sugar levels affect complexion and which foods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for your skin.

Try spicing up your Twitter stream with tips and trivia related to your business. Your followers will appreciate the random facts you’re providing and tune in for the next tidbit.

As Earth Day draws to a close, we’d like to leave you with an uncomfortable but significant question: Is it possible that our gadgets and online activities themselves might be harming the planet more than they help?

After all, we know that the data centers that power our favorite applications and sites are far from green — although Google and Facebook are attempting to change that, both in the kinds of energy we use and how much energy is needed.

Still, environmental organization Greenpeace warns that the same companies have caused consumers’ “addiction to dirty energy” and are increasing their energy consumption by around 12% each year. And everything we do online, from web searches to spam emails, leads to a certain amount of CO2.

On the other hand, the Internet is making it possible for many more workers to efficiently and effectively telecommute; this “WFH” revolution is saving the environment that many more cars on the road each morning and evening.

Happy 1st Birthday Facebook’s Like Button!

Exactly one year after its launch, the Facebook Like Button has become ubiquitous across the web and is still installed on thousands of new websites every day.

Facebook first introduced the Like Button at its F8 developer’s conference, along with Facebook Open Graph and instant personalization. Through the “Like”, Facebook spread its social footprint across the web. 50,000 websites installed the Like Button in its first week, and that number rose to 100,000 in less than a month.

That number hasn’t stopped rising since. Facebook said on Thursday that 10,000+ websites add the Like Button every day — identical to what COO Sheryl Sandberg said in October last year. In other words, the growth of the Like button hasn’t slowed down in the last six months. The social network says more than 2.5 million websites have integrated with Facebook so far, including over 80% of the U.S. top 100 websites.

Facebook’s success hasn’t gone without notice. Google recently launched +1, its answer to Facebook’s Like Button, and a study last month by Eventbrite concluded that a “Like” is more profitable than a tweet.

President Obama Visits Facebook Headquarters

President Barack Obama discussed the economy, technology, innovation and more during a packed town hall at Facebook headquarters.

Zuckerberg‘s first question to Obama focused on the economy and how the U.S. will turn things around while bringing down the deficit. He discussed rolling back tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and cutting the budget to reduce the deficit. “We have a long-term problem with Medicare and Medicaid,” Obama noted, stating that “20% of the patients account for 80% of the cost” of most hospitals.

Most of the time though, President Obama addressed questions from the audience, as well as user-submitted questions collected via the web. During this line of questioning, Obama addressed the housing crisis, clean energy research, immigration policy, Medicare and education reform.

Many of the questions came from Facebook employees. One asked Obama about a recent budget proposal from representative Paul Ryan. The employee asked Obama if his budget plan was bold enough. “The Republican budget put forward is fairly radical,” Obama responded. “I wouldn’t call it particuarly courageous,” he added before continuing with criticism of the viability of Ryan’s plan.

Another question focused on how the government would slow the rise of health care costs. Obama responded by saying that the government should provide incentives to invest in new IT technology that would reduce costs.

At the end of the town hall meeting, Zuckerberg, who was uncharacteristically wearing a suit coat and tie, presented Obama with a uniform he’s more familiar with: a Facebook hoodie.

Android App Turns Phone Calls Into Interactive Social Media Exchanges

Quick Pitch: Innobell makes calls and instant messaging on mobile devices inherently more social.

Genius Idea: Use applications during phone calls.

Inspired by a frustrating phone call during which he was unable to adequately describe his whereabouts, 20-year-old Israeli entrepreneur Shai Magzimoff set out to build an application that would simplify the exchange of information over the phone. “If I’m connected to the person I’m talking to, why can’t I use all of my applications with that person?” he rationed.

Innobell, released earlier this month for Android, brings Magzimoff’s vision to fruition. The application allows users to exchange a wealth of practical, social and entertainment content while talking on the phone or chatting in the app.

The Innobell user can make a call, as usual, and then select from the service’s social media add-ons to turn the call into the unusual — an interactive conversation that extends beyond words and onto the web.

Innobell users can play games with each other, share photos or other content from Facebook, exchange money via PayPal, trade Wikipedia articles or websites, share their location courtesy of Google Maps and simultaneously watch YouTube videos together. Beginning next week, users can even exchange Groupons. The same content exchange possibilities are available to Innobell chat users.

“Why am I supposed to bump my phone?,” Magzimoff questions.

He is, of course, referencing Bump, a mobile application that lets users exchange photos, music, social mediaand contact details by bumping phones together. He reasons that the act is unnatural when compared to the familiar behavior of phoning a friend. “My grandma can understand that,” he says of exchanging information over the phone. “When she’s calling someone, that’s when she’s connected to that person.”

Apart from device idiosyncrasies and Innobell’s single platform experience, Magzimoff has nailed rich and social media data exchange via phone or chat. Users love it, he says, and are clamoring for Innobell to add Twitter, release a version for iPhone and introduce VoIP calling functionality.

He’s happy to oblige the requests. An iPhone version of Innobell is slated for release in the next three months. Application users can also expect to see new add-ons integrated into the experience on an ongoing basis.

Innobell is based in Tel Aviv, Israel and has raised more than $200,000 from an investor friend of Magzimoff’s. The startup plans to earn money through affiliate marketing and revenue sharing with developers.

Facebook Accidentally Turns On Email Notifications, Sparks Wave of Complaints

Facebook has accidentally turned on email notifications for some users, and the social network’s users are complaining loudly.

Most users receive email notifications for events such as when someone sends a friend request or when a friend posts on their wall. This feature can be turned off in user settings, but apparently something has happened at Facebook that has caused the feature to be activated again.

“Some people are suddenly receiving email notifications for settings they had turned off, and the checkboxes are now checked,” Facebook said on its Known Issues Facebook Page. “We are currently working on a solution to this problem.”

As one might expect, affected Facebook users are not happy and are posting to Twitter and Facebook to complain.

Facebook Expands Safety & Security Tools

Just a day after security firm Sophos sent Facebook an open letteraddressing privacy issues, Facebook has introduced a suite of new safety features.

While the social network did not satisfy the letter’s requests to make privacy the default, create a vetting process for app developers and turn on HTTPS automatically, it did come through on the promises it made in an announcement at President Obama’s White House Conference on Bullying Prevention last month. Here’s what’s new:

Two Factor Authentication: This is a new feature that will be turned off by default. If you turn it on, Facebook will ask you to enter a code anytime you log in from a new device.
Improved HTTPS: Facebook added HTTPS support in January, which makes it harder for someone on a public WiFi network to hijack your data. Now if you start using a non-HTTPS application while in HTTPS mode, Facebook will automatically switch you back to HTTPS mode when you’re finished.
Expanded Social Reporting Tool: Facebook’s new social reporting tool brings community members into the mix when dealing with bullying or other violations of Facebook’s terms of service. The features allows users to send a private message to the person who posted the offensive content or — if they want to report the content to Facebook — to include trusted authority figures as contacts in the report. Previously, the feature was only included for photos and wall posts. Now it is available on profiles, pages and groups as well.
Family Safety Center redesign: Facebook’s safety center got a makeover that highlights the site’s safety philosophy, community, and tools and resources like account settings. As in the previous versions, resources for Parents, Teachers, Teens and Law Enforcement are also highlighted. Facebook wrote on itsofficial blog that it also plans to add a free, downloadable guide for teachers who want to use social media in the classroom. Considering that most schools block Facebook on their computers, we’re curious to see what the guide suggests.

US Government Closed Down 3 of the Biggest Gambling Site on the Net

Gambling online just got significantly less convenient Friday when the U.S. Government shut down the three largest Internet gambling sites operating in the United States. Now it’s time for a precedent-setting showdown, where courts will deterPublish Postmine if this kind of gambling is legal or not.

Federal prosecutors accused the three founders of the gambling sites and eight others with illegal gambling, bank fraud and money laundering, according to the Financial Times [paywall].

A $3 billion civil suit was file by the United States government was made to recover the profits from its operations, says the Financial Times. Gambling sites Absolute Poker, Poker Stars, and Full Tilt Poker allegedly disguised billions of dollars of gambling payments as online store purchases of items such as golf balls, jewelry and flowers, says the Wall Street Journal.

If you’re in the U.S., when you point your browser to any of those three gambling sites, you see a scary thing: The U.S. government has seized the domain names of the three sites, preventing gambling transactions and anything else:

Facts About Primary and Secondary School Grants

There are grants/scholarships available for children attending private school at the secondary (high school) or even primary educational levels. These grants are a bit harder to find, but nevertheless many programs exist. Probably the best advice here is to talk to the financial aid administrator of the school to which your child is applying. They can tell you all about both the grant and scholarship opportunities of the school itself, and of various foundations and government programs that you can apply to. You can also check with your state’s department of education. In addition, a couple of good websites to check out for information along these lines is schoolgrants.org, and grants.gov. These sites are listed in the helpful links section at bottom.

If you want to go to school, the grant money is, more often than not, there. If you are truly wealthy enough not to qualify for any grant money, chances are you won’t be searching for grants anyway. So rest assured that if a grant seems like it will be necessary to help you out with education costs, you’ll probably be eligible for one. It may not cover the entire cost of your tuition, but the more effort you put into finding a series of grants (rather than just one) the more of your educational costs you can potentially fund. The first step is usually to go for the biggies – the federal grants listed above, and for that the main thing required is simply to file your FAFSA as early as possible. After that is done, begin making a big list of all the more private grant sources available – everything from scholarships from your school, to private foundations, to even websites. When you’re done you should have a large list of potential sources. Simply apply to them all, and see what happens. If you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself with a good, substantial proportion of your education taken care of. Good luck!
