If you are YouTube content creator, or viewer you already know that YouTube rolled out another round of huge changes to the entire website a few weeks ago. It was really weird, by the way … things were literally changing WHILE I was using the site one night LOL.

As with most things on YouTube, people are passionate and opinionated. The video below details several of the changes to the channel pages specifically, and if you watch it on YouTube you’ll see the dislike rating is WAY higher than the like rating. Also (as expected with any YouTube change), people are livid in the comments. Personally I think YouTube users are much more vocal about how much they hate changes than even FaceBook users are.

I’ve already opted into the new channel layout. I did it the 1st day it was offered, freaked out and changed it back, then did it again a week ago. I still haven’t finished doing my image map on my channel banner. Personally I’m still gettting used to the new layout. I definitely feel disoriented, it’s cleaner but not intuitive entirely (yet).

I’ll share more on this as as I learn more,

Foliovision asked me to “fill in the [Twitter] API keys on settings page” for their proprietary sharing plugin so I thought I’d tell ya’ll just how I found my Twitter API key (’cause it took a second)

Before I start, here’s a refresher if you don’t know what an API is.

Login to your Twitter account

Go to https://dev.twitter.com

Click ‘Create an App’

Enter any name you’d like, something descriptive to help you remember what this application is

Enter a description to help you remember what the application is

Enter your website address (typically your domain name like glamazini.com)

Enter your callback address (typically your domain name like glamazini.com)

Check the ‘Yes I agree’ check box

Fill in the CAPTCHA

Click the ‘Create Your Twitter Application’ button

On the next page copy the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret

Click the “Create access token” button & wait a second …

Soon you’ll see an Access token and Access Token Secret displayed. Copy them as well.

To access this information again make sure you’re logged into Twitter and visit https://dev.twitter.com/apps/

These new API keys will now allow me to assign them specifically to the sharing plug in used on my site. If I do new keys per each application accessing twitter from my site I won’t hit the API limits as quickly.

Hope that helped someone!

I compiled the longest most excruciating journal-style blog post during my experience working with Folivision to move my blog, Glamazini.com, from TypePad to WordPress self-hosted. At the time I expected it to be a seamless trouble-free move that took a maximum of 2-weeks. I also expected the post would be a feel good positive review of the company. Neither was the case. I’ve wavered back and forth with whether I should post that post as-is because, as the move dragged on the post dragged on and I honestly can’t imagine who in their right mind would read the entire thing. I decided not to post it, but if you are interested in a LOOOOOONG documentary as-is experience feel free to email me via the Contact link and I’ll forward the entire post to you via email.

Synopsis

Cons

Took too long: The move took over a month to complete. I was told it would take 2-weeks.

Unclear communication: There were often times that I had no clue what Foliovision was doing and when it would be completed. Their communication was nebulous and confusing. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being stellar, I give them a 2 for communication clarity.

Rude creative director: The creative director had a tendency to be unprofessional when addressing me. It got to a point where I dreaded opening messages from him and was SO HAPPY when he finally shut it and I only seemed to be speaking to my technical lead (who was much more pleasant and professional).

Pros

Technically Savvy: I must applaud Foliovision for knowing what the hayle they are doing. My technical lead, Martin, was outstanding (and nice) and went above and beyond. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being stellar, I give them a 9 for technical ability.

Got more than I expected: I thought I was getting A and I got B … but in a good way. I totally thought I was only getting the content of the posts moved (per the name of the package I purchased and preliminary emails with the creative director in June), but I got the content of the posts moved, all images moved, the Thesis framework, and redirects out the wazoo to name a few. Talk about sweet! I’m literally at a spot now that I thought it would take me into Spring of 2012 to get to on my own. Trust me, I’m happy even if they made me want to start flipping tables at times.

Overall Ratings

Communication: 2
Technical Ability: 9
Value for Price paid: 10

Would I Recommend them/Use Them Again?

Yes, and I’m actually using them to do some website optimization right now. Honestly if you’d asked me this question in the height of the foolishness I would have screamed HAYLE TO THE NO!! in your face and walked off cussing … but a month with no contact gives you perspective and ultimately my goal is a technical one, who cares if I don’t care for the personalities involved and they can be rude and immature. I must admit, I think deep down I procrastinated on posting this because I’m afraid they’ll read this then go do something malicious to my Glamazini.com blog . Crazy I know, but it went through my head so *shrug*

Once again, you are interested in the uber long documentary as-is experience feel free to email me via the Contact link and I’ll forward it to you.

Last night I switched my related content display plugin from LinkWithin to nrelate on this blog.

If you recall

LinkWithin is a blog widget that appears under each post, linking to related stories from your blog archive.
- LinkWithin.com

and nrelate does the same thing EXCEPT it gives you credit for the clicks.

What does that mean? “credit for the clicks”
As I learned from @xdwebsolutions and @dohertyjf, when someone clicks on a suggested post via LinkWithin, it redicts the traffic through their own site, then back to your own site. This negatively affects your SEO (search engine optimization) and gives them a bajillion links in from your site (positively affects their SEO).

You can learn more about why I switched by reading @dohertyjf ’s article HERE.

Now, in an ironic twist of fate, Foliovision (whom I have yet to tell you guys about in full), has been doing some work for me lately and switched my related content plugin on Glamazini.com from nrelate to YAARP a few days ago because, according to them, nrelate “was putting [my thumbnails] on their CND server and loading them from there” … whatever that means … SO now it makes me wonder if YAARP really is the way to go. Hmmm… even if you go to @dohertyjf ’s article HERE you’ll see that he’s updated at the bottom with his own recent speculations about nrelate, YAARP and even LinkWithin.

The moral? Plugin at your own risk but for now I have nrelate on this blog, YAARP on Glamazini.com and have had LinkWithin on both but no longer. LOL

The concept of an Edge Rank on Facebook (which I’ll post about when I have a clearer grasp)

As always, I enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. Thanks to the team Show Me The Blog for allowing me to participate in such a significant way this year.

You can read the tweets on the hashtag #smbstl and get more information about the conference at ShowMeTheBlog.com.

My site, Glamazin.com, went down AGAIN today.

I say again, because this must be the 4th or 5th time since I moved to WordPress hosted on Host Gator, that my site was down. I’m not used to this (my site never went down on TypePad and probably was down once in 10 years on 1and1). Needless to say, I’m not happy.

Around 4PM today I got a text from a friend telling me my site was down and instead she saw something along the lines of:

Error establishing database connection.

The issue per my host is my site is using too many resources. I did what they told me to to remedy it and if seemed to fix if all. Then today it went down again and I have no clue why. Foliovision, the company that moved my site, blames my “sub standard host” and the fact that I chose not get a dedicated server. It may be, but for now I’m gonna keep troubleshooting with what I do have (HostGator.com’s Hatchling package).

So let’s recap:

Foliovision blames Host Gator and me for my poor decision making skills

Host Gator blames me for my burdensome site

I just need my site to be stable and have someone willing to partner with me to make that happen.

Sigh.

I’ve been missing in action.

No need to go into all the reasons why I went from posting daily on this blog to tumbleweeds a-blowing through … let’s just get back into the groove of learning us some social media shall we?

First let’s get up to speed a.k.a.

What’s Been Happening Back There Roshini?

I moved my blog, Glamazini.com, from TypePad to WordPress on September 22nd. You can read about why I would do such a thing here and get a little more detail here.

I’ve learned a bunch about the Thesis Theme for WordPress.

I used Foliovision to do the content move of my blog & compiled 99% of the experience. Honestly it got out of hand (the compilation) so I gave up because I realized no person in their right mind would read all that BUT I will post what I did compile soon because you never know *shrug*

I’m working with Foliovision again to do some site optimization work. If/when you read my review of them referenced in #3 you may be surprised I’m using them again but it is what it is. Eyes on the prize.

That’s the super uber duper high in the sky level overview of what in the world I’ve been doing back here that caused SMLC to come to a screeching halt. I won’t let that happen again.

Oh and if you’re wondering my numbers are looking STELLAR lately. Like to see um? Here they go:
