What’s Sulia?

This is cross-posted from my other site, San Antonio Mom Blogs.

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen links to posts of mine on a new social networking site called Sulia.

Recently, I accepted an opportunity to contribute to the Parenting section of up-and-coming Sulia, a social network that puts content into categories or “topic channels” so it’s easier to find. Think of Sulia as microblogging meets Pinterest.

I’m using Sulia to post items that are too long for Twitter but too short for a blog post. Others are using it primarily to share their blog posts with the hope of finding new audiences.

Sulia lets you follow other users and view a feed of their content. But, you can also step in to distinct categories like Parenting, Social Media, Hurricane Sandy, Technology, Music, Small Business, and lots more.

Wondering if it’s worth it to spend time on yet another social network? Keep this in mind:

Last month, 10 million people visited [Sulia]– up from 0 just 10 months prior. Some context: Twitter.com still had less than 5 million unique visitors three years after the site launched.

Remember when Pinterest “suddenly” took off? Yeah. Some of us had been using it for nearly a year (or longer) when that happened. Take a look at Sulia and jump into a category or two. There’s even a Sulia San Antonio channel.

Sulia is definitely a social media platform on which you’ll want to keep an eye.

San Antonio Companies: Compete in Social Media Madness

Does your social media-savvy company have what it takes? The San Antonio Business Journal is betting that San Antonio has lots of companies that fit the “most social” bill.

“The San Antonio Business Journal’s Social Madness contest (presented by Capital One Spark Business) measures the growth of a company’s social media presence as it competes in a tournament-style challenge,” said Donna Tuttle, projects editor at The San Antonio Business Journal. “Companies will compete in 43 U.S. cities, with local winners squaring off in a national challenge. Three overall champions get the right to designate a $7,500 donation to the charity of their choice.”

San Antonio companies must be nominated by May 15. In June, competitors go head-to-head with other San Antonio companies and three winners, one from each category (small, medium, large), walk away with the local honors. The winners from that bracket go on to compete in July with the other nationally selected companies.

Said Tuttle, “San Antonio long has been on the forefront of social media. We had a strong group of early adopters, who generously shared their knowledge with the community as early as 2006. While our city sometimes gets dissed for its casual and familial spirit, it is exactly that which has created such a rich social media community.”

I think she’s right. San Antonio’s definitely got the social media chops to Go! All! The! Way!

Cool ideas and hacks for your new Facebook Timeline Cover Photo

Are you using Facebook’s new Timeline yet? If yes, you’re probably looking for cool ways to use the new Cover Photo feature where you can display an 840 x 310 image or collage at the top of your Timeline. If you’re not using Timeline yet, your profile should be automatically switched to it by December 21 (or you can choose to switch to it now by visiting: https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline).

I created my current Cover Photo using a tool recommended by Cecily Kellog (@CecilyK) in her Mom Crunch post on Babble: Need a Fun Avatar Photo?
