This is one of the most frustrating games I've played in a long time and as I type this I am still fuming mad. <P>Cat Mario is a 2D Japanese platforming game that looks and feels like Super Mario Bros. The game was released in 2007 and has a few names, probably because of the translation. Some people call it Syobon Action or Neko Mario. The game is free to play, or rather, free to ruin your day by increasing your level of infuriosity (new word, add it to your dictionary).</P><P>Basically you'll control a friendly kitty cat like character. He doesn't have a name, that i'm aware of, but by the time you're <IMG border=0 hspace=0 alt="MMO Attack" align=right src="/mmoattacklogo-1359751616.png" width=300 height=94>finished playing you'll want to call him any number of expletives. The game consists of four levels, although I never even made it past the first one, with all sorts of traps that are designed to trick you. You will find hidden blocks, power-ups and spikes, angry clouds, mean lasers and something to fuck your day up around every corner.</P><P>So if you're not convinced already, then I would recommend giving Cat Mario a try. You can find it on any number of free to play websites but i'll link to you were I found it first. In this day and age, it seems as though traditional genres are changing to become fast-paced action games. Even the Final Fantasy series plays more like an action game than a traditional RPG these days. <P>When Capcom revealed <STRONG>Deep Down</STRONG> at the PlayStation 4 unveiling last year, our first impression was that it was a return to the days of old, similar in style to Dragon's Dogma or Dark Souls. The game was absent at E3 2013, but it made an appearance at the Tokyo Game Show. We still don't have a great deal of details, but let's go over what we know about the title thus far.</P><P>If you're expecting a fast-paced action game, Deep Down is not going to fill that need. While the atmosphere definitely feels similar to Dark Souls, the action is much slower with a more traditional dungeon crawler vibe. In fact, from what we've seen, the game is more about navigating dungeon-like mazes than it is fast-paced battles.</P><P>What takes the game to the next level is the atmosphere combined with the randomness of the dungeons. It's been known for a while that the game will feature randomly generated dungeons, and it looks like it will be presented similar to the Assassin's Creed Animus system. It takes place in 2094 New York, which means that's probably just where the real world begins. Touching long lost artifacts generates a random dungeon that we presume will be loosely tied to the artifact. Much like in Assassin's Creed, how you get to the dungeon isn't important. It's what you do after you arrive that matters.</P><P>While you slowly make your way through each dungeon, you won't know what to expect. Moving beyond the fact that the dungeon is randomly generated, it's simply hard to tell what's ahead of you. You'll hear a monster lurking in the shadows, you'll know it's there and closing in on you, but you won't know when or where it will attack. Most of the twists and turns in each dungeon are blind corners, so you won't know what to expect until you physically look around a corner. It's eerie and almost gives you that frightened feeling similar to the first time you played Resident Evil back in the day.</P><P>Strategically, you'll have to use the limited tools available to overcome the mysterious and random nature of each dungeon. The combat system features the ability to parry or deflect attacks with proper timing, but damage doesn't seem to be a concern at this point. Once we've seen a build of the game closer to final, it's likely damage will play a role, so knowing how to take down an enemy will be key.</P><P>Alchemy plays a big role in the combat system. You can throw bomb-like objects at enemies like a grenade, or set them up as traps similar to proximity or timed mines. If you're skilled in melee combat, using the parry system seems to work well. However, if melee combat isn't your thing, you can play around with the alchemy traps to dispatch your enemies.</P><P>There are various items to pick up as you traverse each dungeon. At the moment, they don't have much use, but we expect them to offer health and possibly damage-boosting power-ups in the future. While we haven't seen much in the way of weapon variety, it is assumed that weapons will change with each dungeon, if not mid-dungeon. The combat will likely see a few changes between now and the final release of the game, so things are still a bit mysterious.</P><P>At the moment, Deep Down does not have a firm release date. Most people expect to see it by the end of 2014, but there's been no confirmation of that from Capcom. What we do know is that Deep Down is a unique title given the slim offerings of the newly released next-generation consoles. We'll have more information on the PlayStation 4 exclusive as soon as it becomes available. Some page admins last year found that plain-text status updates (or status updates including a link) were doing well in terms of reach. However, Facebook found that engagement was lower for these types of posts.</P><P>The social network decided that since status updates from pages behave differently than photo, video and link posts, they should be treated differently. While users may see more status updates from friends, pages may see a decline in reach for these types of posts, writes Facebook’s Chris Turitzin, Product Manager, News Feed Ranking:</P><BLOCKQUOTE readability="10"><P>As a result, the latest update to News Feed ranking treats text status updates from Pages as a different category to text status updates from friends. We are learning that posts from Pages behave differently to posts from friends and we are working to improve our ranking algorithms so that we do a better job of differentiating between the two types. This will help us show people more content they want to see. Page admins can expect a decrease in the distribution of their text status updates, but they may see some increases in engagement and distribution for other story types.</P><P>Many Page owners often ask what kind of content they should post. This is difficult to answer, as it depends on who your audience is and what they want to see.</P></BLOCKQUOTE><P>The move is to prompt more pages to take advantage of Facebook’s more visual link share format, instead of posting a link within a status update (as illustrated above). The game sees players dropping candies from the top of the screen, which then bounce off of pegs and accumulate points before dropping into buckets at the bottom of the screen.</P><P>Each level has a different layout of rectangular and round shapes, and has a different overall goal, like clearing a certain percentage of shapes from the screen or clearing all symbols of a specific color, as examples. Players earn up to three stars on each stage, and receive bonus points for any leftover shots they had in their pack when completing the level’s requirements.</P><P><IMG class="alignnone size-full wp-image-53818" alt=yummy-balls-2 src="/yummy-balls-2.jpg" width=500 height=468></P><P>As players complete stages, they’ll unlock power-ups that make things easier going forward. However it's expected to end up going for much more than that, despite the fact that the label is incredibly tatty. <P>"This is your chance to own the Super RARE Nintendo World Championship Cart for the NES!!!! As you can see by the pictures, this is an authentic, true to life original cart; no reproduction cart here," reads the description.</P><P>Nintendo World Championships was a series of short parts of different games that were put on the same cart for a competition, the Nintendo World Championships. Players were set against each other to see who was the best Nintendo player around - with the top players being given big cash and product prizes. However, all 90 of the finalists were given a copy of the grey cart Nintendo World Championships, which is on offer today.</P><P>Previous sales of these carts have gone for between $10,000 and $20,000 though perhaps this one won't get quite as high since the label is in such poor condition.</P><P>The auction is set to end tomorrow, so if you have a fair amount of extra cash lying around and want to own a bit of computer gaming history, now's your chance.</P><P>Still, remember there are gold versions of these carts out there. Described as a "fourth person exploratory experience about guidance, influence and subliminal control", Pavilion is a labyrinth of ornate hedge mazes and stained glass art, a thing of beauty that looks more interactive oil painting than game. I could just be projecting. Pavilion, for all of its puzzles and environmental challenges, makes me want to do nothing but painstakingly explore its every nuance which, <strong>judging by early impressions of the game</strong>, seems perfectly in line with what the developers have envisioned for Pavilion. <br /><br /><strong>More information here</strong> <br /><br /><strong>Rime</strong><br /><br /> <br />A desolate, enchanting island that bleeds "scenic" from every pebble. A distant mountain. An enigmatic young boy trussed up in a red cloak. Tequila Works' Rime looks like it was inspired by just about everything that is good in this world : Princess Mononoke, Salvador Dali, Spirited Away. Journey. ICO. <strong>According to an interview with Analog Addiction</strong>, this "open-world adventure" is a story with no words, a game that pivots on an environmental narrative. Which, honestly, is totally okay by me. <br /><br /><strong>More information here</strong> <br /><br /><strong>Hohokum</strong><br /><br /> <br />Honeyslug's Hohokum shares a few coincidental similarities with Doki-Doki Universe. Both are powered by a child-like joy. Both feature unusual denizens. Both will make an appearance on the PS4. Unlike Doki-Doki Universe, however, Hohokum will not put you in command of an endearing little robot. Instead, it will have you operating a flying rainbow-colored snake-slash-transportation-service. Little in the way of concrete details have been released as of yet, an understandable turn of events given that much of Hohokum will hinge on personal exploration and discovery. If the devs gave all the secrets away, what would you do? The Chinese Room's Everybody's Gone to Rapture will explore the repercussions of precisely such an event. It has a scientist in its heart, a promise to be powerful, deep and laser-focused on your emotional journey. A tall order for some developers, perhaps, but standard operating procedure (They made Dear Esther and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs) for the likes of The Chinese Room. Everybody's Gone to Rapture will also apparently feature something really cool but we're not going to be told what just yet. Adding to this selection is Clipwire Games’ Critter Conquest, which offers both multiplayer combat and a level-based single player campaign.</P><P>In each level of combat, players attack computer-controlled bases by clicking and holding their mouse button to deploy troops. Troops attack nearby structures automatically, and players earn up to three stars on each stage depending on their performance.</P><P>Multiplayer combat is similar, as players click on a “Versus” button to view a random enemy base. Players can click on the “Next” button until they find a base they’d like to attack, with combat still taking place automatically once troops are deployed.</P><P><IMG class="alignnone size-full wp-image-53850" alt=critter-conquest-650-2 src="/critter-conquest-650-2.jpg" width=650 height=366></P><P>Back at base, players can construct weapons to defend their kingdom when they’re away, as well as lumber mills and juicers to produce wood and juice, the game’s two main resources. Wood is used to construct additional buildings, or upgrade others to increase their productivity, while juice is used to produce new troops. These resources are also earned in bulk during combat.</P><P>Battles in Critter Conquest do offer a few differences, when compared to similar games. For one, players aren’t required to recruit troops at home before heading into battle. Instead, they build statues in their base to unlock troop types, and can deploy as many as they’d like in the middle of battle by spending juice (up to the battle’s specific troop limit).</P><P>Players can deploy troops of multiple kinds in the same battle, with stronger units requiring more juice to purchase. A power-ups system also allows players to spend juice to stun enemy weapons, increase the battle’s timer and more.</P><P>Critter Conquest is available to play for free on Facebook. All Facebook app developers can opt into this new version of App Insights starting today. It provides developers with a better dashboard to manage apps, as well as more actionable data, a clearer interface and improved warnings when outages occur.</P><P>Facebook Software Engineer Daniel Tomko discussed how App Insights 2.0's improvement in actionable data helps developers:</P><BLOCKQUOTE readability="12"><P>We’ve re-organized the data you need to make a decision in one place. For example, we now have a single dashboard which tells you how much traffic you receive from Facebook, whether it’s coming from Open Graph stories or Requests.</P><P>We realize that it’s difficult to make decisions in a vacuum. Now, you can compare key metrics for your app to those for other apps. For example, if you see an abnormal spike in the mark-as-spam rate for your app’s stories, you can see if the spike is isolated to your app or if other apps also see the spike. A card game that I’ve been iterating for several years. The time to ship physical products around the world takes time.</P><P>I got several playable prototypes out: Angry Troll Run (simple Android test), Thinglings (very simple card game, but actually pretty cool), Raftsmith (simple get out of the isle puzzle game). </P><P>Each of these prototypes had a different purpose: Angry Troll Run was about me seeing how difficult it is to develop for Android. Thinglings was “I want to make this really simple, really small card game on desktop” and for Raftsmith I wanted to see if I can draw fast & make a survival game. The game initially had much more plans… but at least I got the very, very, very compact & playable version out. </P><P>And yes, one game a month is cool. You too should join.</P><P><IMG src="/raftsmith.png" width=300></P><P>Some thing that got less attention was my 7 day FPS entry… which unfortunately I could not finish due problems with the FPS game creator. (yeh, I blame technology here, bear in mind that I wanted to spend days not weeks on these). I had a pretty cool story about a murder that happens in a hotel and that detective must figure out who did it… there was several characters and some “hey, why those planks on the roof look odd” type of figuring for the player. Too bad FPS creator simply could not meet all the tiny details I wanted. It was pretty cool thing to work on though.</P><P><IMG src="/murder-story.png" width=300></P><P>I continued playing around with the detective ideas and drafted some plans for a a procedural detective/forensic game. </P><P>I thought about the gameplay but couldn’t get past “clue” type of hunting so eventually I thought this was too complex beast to tackle. I wish somebody goes and makes a complex, narrative procedural detective game one day, but all the plans I had are not technically so easy. Narrative AI must go some steps further. </P><P>I also dived into the Unity camp and made some technical demos for just myself. My first bit grim entry is called Rest In Pieces, and it’s actually pretty neat and there’s some ideas for developing it further… so I just share a picture. This might turn into something more at some point. We’ll see.</P><P><IMG src="/rest-in-pieces.png" width=300></P><P>I also made a very crude <a href="http://mobileaffiliateprofits.allaffiliatereviews.com ">mobile</a> prototyping tool for myself (since I couldn’t bother taking dice and figures to xmas trip). This tool was helping in designing simple gameplay mechanisms (or theoretically even simple games). </P><P><IMG src="/pocket-proto.png" width=300></P><P>Unity is simply a really cool thing and I’m totally sold for it. </P><P>I tweeted “Give a man a game engine and he delivers a game. Teach a man to make a game engine and he never delivers anything.” (which sort of sums up my own experiences and thoughts when we look at the industry today) and it got 1000+ retweets pretty fast.</P><P>(Please rate and comment here, thanks!)</P><P>And the year ended me participating in the Ludum Dare jam. In just 72 hours I created a pretty moody space game where player needs to answer some really serious questions. Developed by CD Projekt Red, the game will deliver extreme quality visuals, as the company's Co-founder Marcin Iwinski suggests that the game will push fairly close towards maximum capability of Sony's flagship console. <P>Iwinski in an interview with IGN said, "It is extremely manageable. There is a lot of power in these machines, and I don't want to say we're using them to their capacity, but we're fairly close to doing so. We made a decision to go next-gen roughly two and a half years ago, so we've spent a lot of time with these machines, and it's been a great experience across all three platforms. On the old platforms, namely the Xbox 360 and PS3, we probably would have had to sacrifice nearly half of our vision."</P><P>Regarding the quality of gameplay, Iwinkski said, ""All the time, and I think this differentiates us from other games out there. We don't tell you what matters and what doesn't, as your actions in the game speak far louder than words. I mean, there are 36 different endings in Wild Hunt,"<BR>Iwinski also added that the game will require around 50 hours to complete and 100-120 hours if players indulge in side missions. As are those waiting for a Game of the Year version of The Last of Us</EM>. <P>To both of those ideas, Naughty Dog community strategist Eric Monacelli responded, "Ha. Doubtful."<BR>Of course, Monacelli could have also been responding to the idea that Left Behind</EM>, the upcoming singleplayer DLC for The Last of Us</EM>, will have some sort of Uncharted 4</EM> easter eggs hidden within it. If you recall, Naughty Dog previously left a major easter egg in Uncharted 3</EM> strongly hinting towards the studio's follow-up, The Last of Us</EM>. A new report by Shareaholic, measuring social referrals, shows that the social network is right. Since September, referrals from Facebook have grown 48.85 percent, and represented 17.41 percent of all website referrals in November.</P><P>Facebook was one the biggest gainers among social media sites, along with Stumbleupon and Pinterest.</P><P>This shows that more users are clicking on stories with Facebook’s improved sharing format, placing an emphasis on big, bold images.</P><P>The findings were based on 200,000 websites from around the world, accounting for more than 250 million unique visitors each month.</P><P>Shareaholic’s Danny Wong commented on Facebook’s performance in a blog post:</P><BLOCKQUOTE readability="8"><P>Facebook’s share grew 48.85% (up 5.07 percentage points), Pinterest’s share grew 30.06% (up 1.11 percentage points) and StumbleUpon’s share grew 54.36% (up 0.30 percentage points).
