The web is abuzz with the ludicrousness of yet ANOTHER IPO. This time around it’s the group buying powerhouse Groupon. With their billion dollar valuation and winning (and often copied to infinity) strategy they want even more money in public stocks. Here at Social Smocial, we think the best thing for Groupon to do, to get the most out of IPO-ification, would be to sell their own shares as a Groupon Deal.

Some say, they will fail in their IPO, but we say: We want another deal! It’d be the best for both. Win-win. Also, what’s up with 2011? The year of the IPO? We think so. It’d be a matter of time before 3 month old startups IPO-ify their own chance at a quick buck. Will Social Smocial IPO? If we do, it’ll be a 75%-off deal on Groupon in the near future.

It recently came to light that Mark Zuckerberg only eats what he kills. The extreme diet philosophy is alarming, however, one can’t blame him ’cause back in college everything you eat kills you. However, it begs an interesting question. Did Mark Zuckerberg eat MySpace back ’06-’08? He killed the biggest social network at the time.

I think it is safe to assume that Mark at least had a bite out of Myspace, ’cause Myspace is limping around till this day. We at Social Smocial are of the opinion that MySpace would taste a bit strange, with all that fluffy HTML garnish, the substance would have been lost; the meat but a reminder that it was covered in flashy banner ad lettuce. The biggest question is, was this a snack or did he supplement it with breakfast?

In a hallmark decision, Samsung has decided to go for Apple, instead of CERN and their Large Hadron Collider, to ask if they can see into the future. This is due to Apple accusing Samsung of creating products that look like iPhones. Thus, in a trademark get even move, Samsung wants revenge and asks to see Apple’s future.

They want to see the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 to make sure they don’t make the same products. This is kinda interesting, because Samsung could stumble into a strange area where Apple does not exist by the end of the year, or their next product launch. For instance, the new updated second coming on 21st October by that fundamentalist Christian.

A funny turn of events could be that, Samsung sees Apple’s future and realizes Apple has been spitefully creating products to look and feel like Samsung products. This could be paradoxical, because would Samsung have created those similar looking products, if they haven’t looked into the future?

Only the future will tell. We asked Samsung for comment, but they were in a Delorean talking about something called a “Flux Capacitor”.

In other news, lawsuits are now time machines.

Yeah, the title is a bit misleading. Discmen are a bit too discriminatory, you can also include tapes and records. Anyhoo. Some guy from some high profile mag/site proclaimed that the web is dead.

What he says is partly true. More bandwidth and time is being used by other applications, other than our trusty browsers. People stream vids, check their iPads and others Tweet to their social medians via third party apps. That chart, however, I’ll eat and swallow it if it was printed. It’s stupid. Of course video will have more traffic. It’s videos. Videos > Text/HTML/Web.

Anyhoo, this brings me to a more striking question. What will happen to the Web if it indeed is dead? Are we using a zombie web now? Like a resurrected version. Dude, doesn’t know what he is talking out. It’s like we are using some kind of Jesus version of it.

Alas, let’s assume this guy is wrong and he isn’t as literal like that. What if the web does die out? Just like discmen are now a sign of the past, will the Web become a hipster thing? Like a nostalgic hipster place where people still use blogs and Firefox is being held together by a few dedicated old nerds. I wonder if there are a few of them old BBS boards still being run by Amiga fans?

It is hard isn’t it? To think that HTTP is will die along with the WEB. It’s sad. I’ve got a lump in my throat just thinking about it. RIP WEB.

Are you into alt music? Or into some way out tunes that no-one has heard of? Need to impress your hipster friends? Or those super indie friends that never come outside and smokes to look cool? Then here is a list of 6 and 1/2 websites that will give the confidence to say you heard “this band” first, even before they become famous.

1. Last.fm

The main bru among the pack. This guy is the original hipster. He listens to what you listen and recommends. You can choose any artist and go link hopping through similar artists to find your new super indie band. Within in 3 clicks from Muse’s Last.FM page I found Linda Martini, a Portuguese post-rock band. Oh, yeah right? Bow down.

2. Bandcamp

This is the indie record store guy from down the street. He sells everyone’s local taste and some you haven’t even heard of. That’s ’cause they only have one little EP in the back. To find some tunes check the tags section. Within 3 clicks I found this chilled ambient electro bro called Pandaface.

3. HypeMachine

Now, HypeMachine is the current trendy hipster. The tech savvy social median. Kinda like those kids who think they listen to old school rock, but actually like MGMT a lot more. HypeM combs the blogs and picks up what the music blogosphere buzz is. Get here first and you’ll be blogging your way to some instant hipster indie cred.

4. Musicovery

This one is the old wise music aficionado that has listened wide and far. He knows you. He feels you. He understands you. He might even have been part of the opium trade, but he definitely knows what you want. Click on a mood or even genres or eras of music. This guy knows it all, however he might be out of tune from recent hipster trends such as HypeM.

5. Beatport

Ah, yes, the pill popping raver also needs a place in this world. Without lyric content how will you search for your tunes? This place knows that electronic music is the best. It even has charts, so you can upgrade from being the e-taking dancing bro to the DJ on the decks dropping the latest release. Remember to wear your headphones awkwardly, that adds to the hipster cred.

6 and a 1/2.  Tuneglue + Musicroamer

These two guys are like twins. They have the same idea, but one is just slightly different. However, they still have fingers in every pie and similar to Last.fm knows the connections. Is not what you know, but who you know. Go see for yourself. It sometimes gets a bit trippy. Tuneglue and Musicroamer.

Before it becomes mainstream to get a record deal via Youtube, here are some tips. Thanks to Greyson Chance, Savannah Outen, Esmee Denters, Mia Rose and last but not least Justin Bieber for the inspiration.

1) Do covers of a Top 40 songs (preferably at a Talent Show)

This is the best way to connect to your interweb audience. They know the tune, but they wanna see you do your own spin. It’s like those campfires at school camps where the cool dudes always won the chicks, ’cause they could play any song you asked for. Blink 182 got them to second base.

2) Get a Haircut

Where would the Bieber boy without his haircut. It’s simple really. Flippity-bouncy-I-just-came-from-the-beach-from-a-nice-surf-while-the-wind-tousled-my-hair look really works. Your nearest salon would help.

3) Be 10-16 years old

Yeah, some older folks will get record deals too, but you just gotta know that the tween market is where its at these days. This age bracket, allows you to be less talented and let your pre-puberty cute looks and voice win the fans.

4) Get noticed by record execs or celebrities

Justin Timberlake, Usher and Ellen Degeneres all sign these stars straight from Youtube. Perhaps they got really lucky. Justin Bieber’s video was seen by accident. So, make sure you increase your accidental seen rate up. Tag your videos with random things. Or ride the viral wave.

5) Make sure you can be made fun of

This opens up an amazing untapped long tail of interest in you. If you’re too old to sing about ponies, or you’re too young to sing about tappin’ some booty, do it. Spoofs will be made, annoying indie kids will complain at night will sipping wine and you’ll be laughing it up, ’cause any publicity is good publicity.

P.S. – Please leave condolences. I had to Google Justin Bieber images. It was horrifying.
