Who Are the Alms Experts?

This post at Overcoming Bias is definitely social work related. What it shows is that our profession is both not very recognized, publicized or utilized! In it, they state:

The missing group here is alms experts: we have no strong profession of those who specialize in helping the poor, crippled, etc.

I'm sorry, but is that not us? My theory is that a majority of social workers with the skills to work at the top not only don't see that they have those skills, but undervalue the title of social worker. If they're working at the top levels, they damn well don't call themselves social workers.

Also, I was introduced to a great tool that's been really helpful in my personal life and work. Some of you may already have it, but it's called Dropbox and it's extremely useful in accessing documents, pictures and other files from multiple computers. It allows you to backup files, share them and transport them without a problem. If you sign up using the link provided, you (and I) will be also get a little bit more storage than if you sign up by going there yourself.

Spring Cleaning!

The time has come to do a little bit of cleaning up here. The neglect has been piling up and becoming really visible! Many of the blogs have been put in the appropriate places and many dead or protected blogs have been removed. It's really a shame, as I remember some of them as having some excellent content, but c'est la vie!

Anyways, a series of new blogs are on their way.

As always, your help in promoting the blog helps us run smoother. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter or personally emailing our address to someone you think would enjoy it is always helpful. A Social Work Blog Carnival

Hello readers,

I received an email from a blogger who is wanting to start a Social Work Blog Carnival. I have no experience with these, so I'll let their words speak for them!

Many bloggers have probably heard of the concept of a blog Carnival, but just to clarify, it is a sort of online magazine on a specific theme which is made up of contributions from those who blog on that theme. The carnival is generally hosted by different blogs each month and provides links to each.

I am looking to get a social work blog carnival going. I am thinking that I'll leave the theme of the first edition open in order to solicit more interest. It should be related to social work, but doesn't necessarily need to be by a social worker. It can be from a child and youth care worker, addictions treatment, research, etc. As long as it relates to social work and/or the helping process.

One day I plan on wading through all these blogs and seeing which still fit and which need to be tossed. Having spun through a few of them, I see that many have turned into personal blogs. While a certain amount of personal information is important in a social work blog, I think having it purely personal takes away from the purpose of the site. Well, that's in the future anyways. As for now, I have a few new blogs to add that I've just been perusing. There's some good stuff here. :)
