Women are substantially more likely than men to perceive the electoral environment as highly competitive and biased against female candidates.

Women are much less likely than men to think they are qualified to run for office.

Female potential candidates are less competitive, less confident, and more risk averse than their male counterparts.

Other positive characteristics—it’s a very socially responsible generation. When I was doing research for my book, I asked everybody I interviewed, which was 150-160 entrepreneurs, “Would you describe your company as having a social mission?” And 70 percent said yeah. I thought that was amazing. Previous generations may have said, “I’m going to make my money, and then I’m going to give back. And I’ll do it through donations or maybe donating a percentage of sales to my favorite charity.” But this generation has a stated social mission at the outset: “We’re not going to wait until we make profits.”

There’s a company in my book called HAPPYBABY Foods, which makes frozen, organic baby meals. From the very inception of their company, they were committed to feeding a kid in Malawi for every package of baby food they sold here. And that was before they had a dime in profits. That’s very typical that there’s a commitment to having a larger purpose beyond commerce; there’s not this separation of profit and not-for-profit. You find a lot of hybrid companies in this generation.

Another positive characteristic is flexibility, because you don’t have this expectation that you’re going to get a job and stay in it for 20 years. You’re more flexible about moving around and juggling a lot of balls at one time and kind of cobbling things together, more than people of older generations who kind of would freak out if they lost their job.

In the Horn of Africa, Somalia makes headlines but often only because of drought, famine, crisis, and insecurity. Al Jazeera launched Somalia Speaks to help amplify stories from people and their everyday lives in the region -- all via SMS.

Somalia Speaks is a collaboration between Souktel, a Palestinian-based organization providing SMS messaging services, Ushahidi, Al Jazeera, Crowdflower, and the African Diaspora Institute. Al Jazeera's Soud Hyder said in an interview with us, "We wanted to find out the perspective of normal Somali citizens to tell us how the crisis has affected them and the Somali diaspora."

“The notion was that when the food crisis erupted this summer, we wanted to get word out from the ground level as to what was going on in that region,” Souktel's Jacob Korenblum said.

The goal of Somalia Speaks is to aggregate unheard voices from inside the region as well as from the Somalia diaspora by asking via text message: How has the Somalia Conflict affected your life? Responses are translated into English and plotted on a map (view it here). Since the launch, approximately 3000 SMS messages have been received. Here is just example:

I was born in the city of Wanlaweyn, and some of the people there are destroying things. I am poor now.

For Al Jazeera, Somalia Speaks is also a chance to pilot and test innovative mobile approaches to citizen media and news gathering.

Yet the challenge that the sector faces in building a strong advocacy voice reflects more the extraordinary diversity of the community sector rather than competitive ruthlessness. There is, between those bodies which share a similar purpose, a willingness to cooperate and share good practice. Let’s remember that most powerful social movements of the last century have been driven by loose partnerships between larger numbers of community service or advocacy organisations, some international in orientation, others embedded in local neighbourhood.

There exists, in short, a desire for connectedness.

That is why the launch of the Connecting Up Directoryrepresents an important step forward in providing an on-line comprehensive listing of nonprofits. It will make consultation, communication, and cooperation much easier. It will connect nonprofits and those that support or fund them. It will be equally valuable to those who wish to regulate charities or those who seek to advocate on their behalf.

The Directory will, as it develops, provide a means by which to portray the growing significance of the raucous cacophony of interests that is the community sector.

Connectedness is a source of strength for the community sector. This Directory, which already lists 60,000 Australian nonprofits, represents a bold initiative in seeking to achieve that goal.

The Power of Connectedness - By Peter Shergold
CENTRE FOR SOCIAL IMPACT | 9 DECEMBER 2011
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/csi-edu-rss/~

In this post, Dinika Govender of Future Cape Town looks at a social housing project that puts this into action, delivering a viable model for low-income housing throughout South Africa.

“Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone. It’s not warm when she’s away…”

These are lyrics that the City of Cape Town seems to hope its citizens never have to sing during infamously cold, damp winter months and paraffin-powered nights. In October 2008 the City celebrated the completion of the Kuyasa Energy Efficiency Project- an initiative developed by the NGO, SouthSouthNorthin line with Cape Town’s Energy and Climate Change Strategy- to fit almost 2300 homes with solar water-heaters (SWH’s). The project simultaneously addresses environmental concerns, low-income service delivery, job creation, skills development and socio-economic improvement.

It’s not just another bright-spark either; this project is a first for the City, and for South Africa, on numerous levels:

It’s Africa’s first Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) registered by the UNFCCC Executive Board

The world’s first Gold Standard project to be registered under the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change.

Fitting the Solar Bill

The Kuyasa Project earns carbon off-set credits, with the carbon income allocated to solar water-heater maintenance and future expansion of the installations. The project is funded by the Department of Environment and Tourism’s Social Responsibility Programme and the Western Cape’s Department of Housing, and implementation undertaken by the South African Export Development Fund. As of January 2007, the initial cost of the project stood at R20 million, R12 million of which is for the heaters alone.

Light relief

It may not have been the cheapest energy project, but the socio-economic and environmental benefits have been positive and replicable to date- two outcomes that can make both policy-makers and takers optimistic. Initial surveys of SWH recipients report improved energy efficiency and electricity savings of R50/month; reduced paraffin burning leading to savings of up to R400/month; and reduced cases of paraffin-induced respiratory illnesses.

As COP17 delegates debate the need for promoting “suppressed demand for energy services” and “sustainable development in the carbon market” amongst other green topics, the City’s Kuyasa Energy Efficiency Project is putting its carbon-credits where its mouth is- and its successful implementation will demonstrate a viable model to leverage grant funding for energy upgrades to low-income housing throughout South Africa.

17 Sustainable Ideas for COP17 is a collaboration between This Big City and Future Cape Town running alongside the United Nations Climate Change Conference from November 28th to December 9th.

Enabled by technology and driven by factors like global recession, increasing cost consciousness and environmental concerns the movement is spreading at a great scale and pace. A new set of companies are emerging which are facilitating organized sharing, bartering, trading, renting and swapping to get the same pleasures of ownership with reduced personal costs, and lower environmental impact. A few great examples of the new sharing economy are: ZipCar, Getaround,Couchsurfing, Airbnb, TaskRabbit, Cycle Chalao (India). The movement aims to restore both the local economy and the local food supply. They are proposing an alternative to fast money and fast food and their goal is: – one million Americans investing 1% of their money in local food systems, within this decade. They believe this is the path towards an economy that is healthier, fairer, more balanced, more sustainable. The Slow Money Movement to date has invested nearly 10 million dollars to dozens of small food enterprises ranging from family farms, to organic creameries and organic food suppliers. The movement though originated in America, inspired by the vision of Woody Tasch’s book, Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing As If Food, Farms and Fertility Mattered, has now gone global, spreading to Europe and other parts of the world. An entire ecosystem is evolving to sustain and grow this market from investors, incubators and a social stock exchange to academic programs and co-working spaces for entrepreneurs. Companies that do no harm and create benefits for all shareholders, not just stakeholders. To this effect B Corp has devised a certification to certify companies that meets rigorous and independent standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The high standards helps differentiate between a good company and just good marketing. Further the B Corp legislation allows for companies to make decisions that are good for society, not just their shareholders. The current corporate law on the other hand makes it difficult for businesses to take employee, community, and environmental interests into consideration when making decisions, with the singular aim being profit maximization for stakeholders. The B Corp framework has enabled the formation of new types of companies that are using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems and other existing businesses realigning their values to meet the B Corp requirements. There are over 450 leading businesses across 60 industries in America that have joined the community of Certified B Corporations, some known brands such as Seventh Generation, CouchSurfing, King Arthur Flour. That number is expected to continue to grow rapidly as the baby boom generation “ages in place” in suburbs and exurbs with few mobility options for those who do not drive.

Aging in Place, Stuck without Options ranks metro areas by the percentage of seniors with poor access to public transportation, now and in the coming years, and presents other data on aging and transportation.

The analysis by the Center for Neighborhood Technology evaluates metro areas within each of five size categories. It shows that in just four years, 90 percent of seniors in metro Atlanta will live in neighborhoods with poor access to options other than driving, the worst ranking among metro areas with populations over 3 million. In that size category, metro Atlanta is followed by the Riverside-San Bernardino, CA metro area, along with Houston, Detroit and Dallas. Kansas City tops the list for metros of 1-3 million, followed by Oklahoma City, Fort Worth, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham.

The transportation issues of an aging America are national in scope, and cash-strapped state and local governments will be looking for federal support in meeting their needs.

The federal government should request a Productivity Commission investigation into entrenched disadvantage in this country, says Australia’s pre-eminent business leader.

Presenting the annual oration of welfare agency the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Business Council of Australia chief executive Jennifer Westacott argued for sweeping social and economic reform, encompassing health care provision, tax reform and ways to tackle the intergenerational poverty in parts of the Australian community.

Westacott told Crikey that the lack of opportunity experienced by some Australians was a fundamental economic issue that prevented people from participating in the workforce to their full potential.

"The Productivity Commission is a great body to tackle tough issues, and it would take some of the politics out of the situation," she said.

Westacott also argued that welfare payments should be increased for those "who really need it".

"People cannot live on $35 a day. Entrenching them in poverty is not a pathway back to employment," she said.

She said that Australia’s education system needed to be modernised, and greater flexibility given to principals to make decisions about their schools, to ensue fewer students were left without a year 12 qualification or equivalent.

"Unless you get young people through the school system with the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy, you are setting them up to a fragile future," she said.

Westacott arrived at the BCA with wide-ranging experiences in executive roles, including as director and national lead partner at KPMG, and director of Housing and secretary of Education in Victoria.

Her calls for increased, targeted welfare payments and an investigation into entrenched disadvantage drew widespread applause from her diverse audience, including members of the business, community and government sectors and clients of the Brotherhood.

More contentious with some in attendance were her calls for lower company taxes, which she said would increase productivity and "grow the pie" of wealth and jobs available.

"To make our economy more resilient, we must be competitive," she said. "We must support, not punish, those sectors of the economy that will drive growth."

Unless a program can be replicated and sustained on a large scale, it will not be transformational. Identifying and scaling our best solutions has become the sector's most important challenge. To meet that challenge, we can no longer evaluate programs simply based on how well they've performed in a given locality. Instead, we need to factor in their potential to achieve scale. We need to channel resources to the solutions that can produce the most good for the most people. As Judith Rodin, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, has pointed out, "Solutions to many of the world's most difficult social problems don't need to be invented, they need only to be found, funded, and scaled."

It is incumbent on all of us to understand and vigorously address the barriers that prevent great ideas from turning into transformational changes. Unlike in the private sector, where successful product innovations have a clear process for gaining market share, the best social innovations are not necessarily widely adopted. The "iPods" of poverty alleviation and literacy have likely been invented and put to use by small organizations in some corner of the globe, but there is no market for identifying these breakthrough ideas and ensuring widespread adoption.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steve-davis/social-innovation_b_1109920.html

To better understand emerging trends in social innovation, such as the growing importance of the impact investing industry, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with its sister organization, the World Economic Forum, created the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation. This group, comprising 17 leading social entrepreneurs, academics, philanthropists, and impact investors, meets periodically to explore important issues facing the sector. In the council’s discussions about impact investing, a number of important themes have emerged: Impact investors need to become comfortable taking greater risks and more flexible in the financing terms and instruments they use; philanthropic and soft capital have an important role to play, particularly when it comes to making or facilitating small seed investments; and impact investors should have intimate knowledge of the local conditions where their investees are located so that they can act as a true partner. In the roundtable that follows, four members of the Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation—Álvaro Rodríguez Arregui of Ignia Partners and Compartamos Banco, Iftekhar Enayetullah of Waste Concern, Asad Mahmood of Deutsche Bank, and Jacqueline Novogratz of Acumen Fund—discuss these themes and other important issues in impact investing. The discussion is moderated by council chair Johanna Mair of the Stanford Social Innovation Review and Katherine Milligan of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.

Q&A: Roundtable on Impact Investing (November 16, 2011) | Stanford Social Innovation Review

Navigated from The World Economic Forum Blog | shared via feedly mobile

feedly. feed your mind. http://www.feedly.com

Jess Scully
347 453 3590
