What's New: Starting anew with the Left Bloc

Did they fuse in the Left Bloc? Who chooses the comrades who will eventually become MPs or councillors if they are elected? What does our parliamentary work look like? How do we use our strong presence in Parliament? What does our political and social work outside Parliament look like? Do we define ourselves as anticapitalists? How do we relate to other political forces on the left? Actually, these are some of the core questions which both of us have been asked over the years when talking to members of other European anticapitalist organizations.

What's New: You Do Not Need Ask Permission to Organize a Strike Vote

There have been a lot of questions raised by the mainstream press on why the scale of action that is going on in Quebec has not been happening in the rest of the country. Responses to this cynical question fall into one of the following broad categories: 1. There is a crisis of leadership at the federal level in the CFS. The leadership just does not call for the right kind of action with the correct language. The leadership are just not radical, too close to the social democratic line or actually do not believe in a transformative model the way the Quebec student leadership does.

What's New: Iran and the Axis of Hypocrisy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a new coalition of national unity, elections in the country have been pushed back by months, and suddenly the danger of an armed strike against Iran, by Israel, has become more acute. It is now ten years since George W. Bush announced to the world that the U.S. was up against an "Axis of Evil," a label derived from the "Axis of Hatred," coined by Canadian conservative journalist, David Frum.

The Charest government has turned to repression to try to break the largest and longest student strike in Quebec history. Students had already endured heavy-handed policing, including hundreds of arrests and brutal attacks by riot cops on campuses and in the streets. The new strikebreaking legislation, Bill 78, is a brutal clampdown on the right to organize collectively and on freedom of expression.

The Bullet: Mexico: Populist Lopez Obrador Moves Up in Polls

Mexico's voters face an increasingly murky choice in the rapidly approaching July 1 national election between three conservative, pro-business candidates and a populist candidate who until recently offered Keynesian solutions to the country's endemic problems of inadequate economic growth, huge economic and social disparities, and a political establishment dominated by and in the service of a handful of oligopolies.

What's New: Arab Spring, Libyan Winter

Vijay Prashad's new book, Arab Spring, Libyan Winter captures the complexity of the Arab revolts - by bringing out the history and historical forces behind them. The book exposes the West's imperial anxieties and their fear of the organic - the mass character of these uprisings. It demonstrates the resoluteness of the "rebels from below," that they will not allow the Arab lands to "be the same again," that they are dissatisfied with the Present and they want something more than the "21st century delusions" that neoliberalism delivers.
