Did they fuse in the Left Bloc? Who chooses the comrades who will eventually become MPs or councillors if they are elected? What does our parliamentary work look like? How do we use our strong presence in Parliament? What does our political and social work outside Parliament look like? Do we define ourselves as anticapitalists? How do we relate to other political forces on the left? Actually, these are some of the core questions which both of us have been asked over the years when talking to members of other European anticapitalist organizations.

There have been a lot of questions raised by the mainstream press on why the scale of action that is going on in Quebec has not been happening in the rest of the country. Responses to this cynical question fall into one of the following broad categories: 1. There is a crisis of leadership at the federal level in the CFS. The leadership just does not call for the right kind of action with the correct language. The leadership are just not radical, too close to the social democratic line or actually do not believe in a transformative model the way the Quebec student leadership does.

The Charest government has turned to repression to try to break the largest and longest student strike in Quebec history. Students had already endured heavy-handed policing, including hundreds of arrests and brutal attacks by riot cops on campuses and in the streets. The new strikebreaking legislation, Bill 78, is a brutal clampdown on the right to organize collectively and on freedom of expression.
