Please join art enthusiasm for a trip to the Getty Center on Sep 8, for a last viewing of the spectacular art of one of the masters of Orientalist Art, Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904).Gérôme was among the most officially honored and financially successful French artists of the second half of the 19th century. His theatrical approach to painting leaves us with brilliantly executed paintings that are not only highly detailed but a true feast for the eye. Colorful, exotic and highly intriguing his paintings have been collected worldwide. This long awaited exhibit is a wonderful collection of his works all housed under one roof.

Please RSVP by Sep1, 2010 via email to artenzie@cox.net We will meet at my residence to car pool to the Getty museum at 930am. Directions will be given once you RSVP.
If you enjoy browsing through antique stores this event is for you. Old Town Orange has numerous dealers of antiques and collectibles, with stores lining many of the side streets.

In 1869, two lawyers named Alfred Beck Chapman and Andrew Glassell accepted 1,385 acres of land from the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana in lieu of legal fees. In 1871, they hired William Glassell, Andrew's younger brother, to lay out the town of Richland. The town was originally one square mile, surrounded by 60 ten-acre farm lots, which sold for six dollars an acre.

Soon, it was discovered that there was already another California town named Richland. The town was renamed Orange in honor of Glassell's birthplace, Orange County, Virginia. Only later would the city live up to its name, becoming famous for its citrus packing and shipping.

Source: Mouseplanet

Today, Old Town Orange considers itself the "Antique Capital of California". You can find just about everything from kitsch to true antiques, you never know what might evoke a fond memory. Strolling from store to store you can truly step back in time and experience true "Americana".
On exhibit are 40 black-and-white photographs by acclaimed documentary photographer Chris Rainier. Rainier is known for his revealing images of earth’s last wilderness areas and the isolated indigenous peoples who live there. The photographs are a powerful documentary of the lives, masked ceremonies, crocodile cults, rites of passage, adornment, celebrations and rituals practiced by the people of New Guinea.

Recently I went to a meeting to discuss the new magazine layout for the Nellie Gail paper. In the process I met some other club organizers and thought I share a bit about them on the Socialites blog.

Did you know that Nellie Gail has a Ranch Riders club - “Where you don’t have to have a horse to participate?!” I had absolutely no idea and would have joined this group much earlier. I just figured me showing up with no horse, might not have looked to good. Anyhow, if you are interested in joining me on these Sunday rides, send me an email. It's been ages since I have been on the back of a horse, but I am willing and eager to get back in the saddle, just send an email!

The Ranch Riders meet every Sunday at the middle area between 9:30 am and 10:00 am. For those of you interested in joining them – get in the loop at: nelliegailranchriders@gmail.com.

Thank you for Visiting!

Three of our members got together at the Nellie Gail Gardner's club and met some lovely "Green Thumbs". The topic that day was about how to attract local birds to your garden. I learned so much and promptly went out and bought seeds and bird houses to invite some feathered friends to my garden. I thought I share a link and some information about the group with those who missed this outing.

Notes from Director Rob Ruggiero
It’s a life lived out loud in this exhilarating new musical about "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald. This theatrical event weaves myth, memory and music as it tells the uplifting and poignant story of one of the greatest jazz/pop vocalists of 20th century music. It’s 1966 and the fabled songstress is preparing for one of the most important concerts of her career. As she jams with the musicians (including famed trumpeter Louis Armstrong) and gets ready to meet the audience, Ella reflects on her life, her secrets and the love of music that made her soar. Featuring more than a dozen of her most famous hits, including “A Tisket, A Tasket,” “How High the Moon,” “That Old Black Magic” and “They Can’t Take that Away from Me,” this swinging new musical invites audiences to fall in love all over again with the magic and soul of Ella Fitzgerald.

She sells the breads her German husband bakes. Mrs. Meixner with various loaves of bread stacked in wicker baskets, sets up her booth at markets throughout Orange County.

To find out when and where she will be next visit the Bread Gallery

What I loved about the bread was that number one it was baked that same morning and had a wonderful crunchy crust. When reading the label, it said it was Vegan, made with unbleached, unbromated wheat flour, filtered water, sea salt and yeast - no preservatives of any kind. I kept the bread in it's paper wrap and by seriously pacing myself enjoyed the same crunchy crust for three more days. My store bought baguette usually turns into a club after one night on the counter, ready to be used as a deadly weapon.

So guess where you can find me next Sunday morning?! Yup ~ need to buy more bread and try the other goodies she was selling!!!

Some members met at the Norton Simon museum to see Vermeer’s A Lady Writing. We had a wonderful lunch at Cheesecake Factory and then proceeded to tour the exhibit and the lovely grounds of the museum.

The painting was much smaller than we had expected, but beautifully executed.

The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena has a little treasure on loan. From now until February 2, 2009, there is a rare opportunity to see Vermeer’s A Lady Writing. On loan from the National Gallery in Washington, this is a characteristic example of Vermeer's mastery of paint and light. A Lady Writing, created sometime in the mid-1660s shows a woman poised to write, but gazing out at the viewer instead.

Please join us January 21st for a visit to the Norton Simon Museum!

We will meet at my home at 10am to car pool up to Pasadena

Please RSVP by January 14th via artenzie@cox.net or leaving a comment

Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) is one of the world’s most venerated artists. One of 35 paintings by Vermeer, this piece shows a woman poised to write, but instead looking out at the viewer instead. It is as if the viewer has stepped into the woman's space interrupting her in her activity. She look at the viewer alert, friendly and inviting.

One does not know what the work is about, there are no visiual clues, but Vermeer cleverly uses this set up to pull you into the painting and hold your attention to explore. As the viewer looks at all the details, he/she might also recognize the yellow jacket, an item which belonged to Vermeer's household, which has been used in other paintings as well.

Vermeer's technique is superb in that his work does not show any lines. Instead form and detail are only suggested through subtle value shifts in the planes and the use of strategically places visual clues.

True yellow has only been used on the sleeve. The rest of the garment appears to be yellow only because Vermeer uses optical effects to give the appearance of a yellow jacket.

Vermeer is considered a Classicism who creates settings that could be anywhere at anytime. He uses no spacial or time references in the painting. Although most everything in the painting is placed horizontally to the picture plane, he uses only two elements to create spacial depths, the angle of the chair and the sweep of cloth.

My notes taken from an interview with Arthur Wheelock - Curator of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC

We have a wonderful day planned for December 4th! Our friends at Debussy have invited us to join them for lunch at the Five Crowns Restaurant in Corona Del Mar at 1130am. The restaurant is usually open only for dinner, but they will open their doors especially for this event!

A beautiful replica of one of England's oldest country inns, Five Crowns is a place of candlelight and cozy fireplaces…where good cheer and warm hospitality invite you to leave your cares at the door.

Siegi, Jenny and Gerda told us all about their impressions of the latest Tina Turner concerts they had attended and we had some good laughs.

After a light lunch we headed over to World Art Gallery. There Mrs. Gloria Gales, our hostess gave us the full tour and talked about the artist and the art work she has exhibited in her gallery space. Everyone had a wonderful time and one lucky member even took home two lovely souvenirs of Russian art.

My name is Enzie Shahmiri and I am your hostess and event coordinator. I am a professional portrait artist and long time resident of Nellie Gail Ranch. One day, after unsuccessfully trying to find someone to go to the ballet with, I figured why not find like minded people within my own neighborhood, who love to socialize and enjoy attending sophisticated events that are related to the arts, music and theater.

The Nellie Gail Socialite Club is a place where members have an opportunity to create new friendships, network and share the activities that they like to participate in with other members. There are no membership dues and no commitments, only a common bond of enjoying all the beautiful things in life. Friends of residents are welcome to come along on our outings as long as they have send in their rsvp.

Meetings take place the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10am (unless an evening event is scheduled) and can last for several hours. Scheduled events will be published on this blog and in the Nellie Gail newsletter and all that is asked is that you sign up to follow this blog and rsvp in a timely manner by either leaving a comment or contacting me via Email

Suggestions for events are always welcome and I encourage you to share your photos and activities on this blog.

Welcome ~ I am looking forward to introducing you to our group!

During our fashion show luncheon several of our members wanted to take Mrs. Gloria Gales up on her generous invitation for a private gallery showing at World Art Gallery in Ladera Ranch. Gloria is in the process of rehanging her gallery with exciting new art work and she has invited the Socialite members to view the new selection and join her for a private touring. She will tell us about the various art styles and the artists she has chosen to represent.

Before we had to her gallery, we will stop for a light lunch at the Pacific Whey Bakery Café at 1PM and then will head over to the gallery for our private tour and dessert.

The exhibit was well organized and we saw some stunning pieces. The museum exhibit was followed by dinner and a lovely chat.

Here are some photos for those of you who were unable to attend.

It was mentioned that many of the warriors were painted. Once the paint came into contact with the air though, it started to flake of. There are still many areas of the site that have been left untouched and are scheduled for later excavation. The good news is that a special treatment has been developed that protects the paint now thus preventing further disintegration.
All warriors started off as a big lump of clay formed in a cylindrical shape. Once these were fired another thinner layer of clay would be added and hundreds of workers would create individual looking warriors with highly detailed clothing.

My family and I have lived in the Nellie Gail community for over 10 years now and loved every minute of it. The neighborhood offers equestrian, ranch style living in the middle of the city and is about 15 min drive from the ocean. You can't ask for much more.

Over the years Nellie Gail residents have organized many things, among the better known fundraisers for different causes. I am the organizer for a social group in our community called the "Socialite Club". Just as the name implies we socialize and visit museums, theater performances, concerts, etc.. Our activities are featured in the local community paper "The Pony Express". Since I also write the articles for our club, I asked if the paper would be willing to cover the Darfur Fundraiser. I was truly delighted when they agreed. It is so wonderful to see when a community pulls together to help support a cause.
Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor
May 18 - October 16, 2008

Considered one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century, the tomb complex of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, features thousands of terra cotta warriors that were tended to protect him throughout eternity. Since their discovery, the terra cotta army has been termed the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World. Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor is the largest loan of terra cotta figures and significant artifacts to ever travel to the U.S. from the First Emperor’s enormous mausoleum. The exhibition provides a deeper knowledge of this historical site and showcases 100 sets of objects, which includes approximately 20 life-size figures.

It was wonderful to meet everyone who came to the 1st Socialite Club meeting!

A big "Thank You" to Heidi Ehler, Siegi Farboudmanesh, Jenny Klein, Gloria Gales, Janet Sanford, Toni Christianson and our only gentleman guest Mr. Shafiq Hasan who attended the 1st meeting. We spent the afternoon discussing what we should see in the upcoming months. Some wonderful suggestions were made which I will post shortly. We had a wonderful time getting to know each other and I hope that those who have not been able to join us this time, will get a chance to meet everyone else during our 1st outing to the Bowers Museum
