Giorgio Armani takes to the high seas in high style with Bar Refaeli, in the December issue of Harper's Bazaar. The designer offers a tour of his yacht, the Main, discusses his lifestyle, and chats with Refaeli about Leonardo DiCaprio.

"How's Leo?" Armani asks, referring to Leonardo DiCaprio, Refaeli's boyfriend. "Oh, he's good," she replies. "He's jealous I'm here." "I'll bet," comes Armani's reply.

"I need to close myself off in my own private world," he says. "I am too exposed normally. The boat is a refuge."

"What I like about being on a boat is the rhythm and the routines," Armani says, seated in front of a minimal onboard fireplace. "They remind me of the military. It's discipline."

Naomi Watts, a guest on Armani's Main: "He's Captain Mr. Chic," says the actress. "His yacht is a floating version of himself: sleek, chic, and very comfortable."

Katy Perry graces Harper’s Bazaar’s December cover, and in the interview, the provocative pop star talks about being Mrs. Brand, her risqué style, body image, and more. The glamorous photo shoot captures another side of Katy Perry: the sophisticated femme fatale.

On her husband, Russell Brand and his spiritual quest: “I always knew I wanted a great man of God, someone who was going to be an inspiration for people and also be a lovely husband and father,” she says. “We’re at different places in our lives, but we can still grow together. He’s thought-provoking, articulate, a real advocate. I also definitely wanted to have a laugh. I have all that in him.”

She is part of a new wave of pop stars—among them, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Fergie— but her fellow quick-change artists are more sisters than competitors: “We’re all unique. That’s why we all win and we all can exist. People don’t want just vanilla. They want 31 flavors. I couldn’t do what Rihanna does. I couldn’t do what Gaga does. They can’t do what I do.”

On her image: “I’m kind of a good girl—and I’m not,” she says. “I’m a good girl because I really believe in love, integrity, and respect. I’m a bad girl because I like to tease. I know that I have sex appeal in my deck of cards. But I like to get people think ing. That’s what the stories in my music do.”

On her father's signature style: "My dad has more sparkly stuff than most men."

On dating Django James Stewart, the musician son of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics: "Our parents know each other. My dad's cool with that kind of stuff," she says.

Her mom, Jerry Hall, is supportive of her work - including her topless ads for Hudson Jeans: "My mum did a lot of very provocative work with Helmut Newton. She understands. It is pretty crazy, though. I didn't think that it was going to be on giant billboards everywhere."

It's been rain, rain and more rain in New York City in the past little while, a sure sign that fall is really here. With all the water coming from above, the side and sometimes even below, there's no better way to stay cozy and dry than a pair of galoshes aka rainboots.

There aren't many rain proof boot and shoe varieties for men, but I stumbled upon this great pair of half-length boots by SeaVees. The army coloring tacks onto the military trend and general masculine aesthetic that I personally gravitate to. Unlike most rainboot styles, this SeaVees boot features a lace-up front that adds to the utilitarian look, putting some adventure in your step.

Adrian Grenier’s Teenage Paparazzo Captures the Core of Celebrity Culture, Offers an Insightful Look at the State of Entertainment Media

“We’re so used to hyperreality and the production value of media, that reality doesn’t seem so real anymore,” says Adrian Grenier, making a powerful point about the tabloidization of entertainment media, and the blurring between reality and fiction in a society of simulacra.

Grenier portrays a movie star on a show about celebrities, and he started his career as part of another entourage, on Woody Allen’s Celebrity. Through Teenage Paparazzo, he deconstructs the phenomenon of celebrity culture, from its creation, to proliferation, to consumption – driven by our fascination with the icons, images, and narratives manufactured by the Hollywood dream factory and sustained by the media machine.

The film follows 14 year-old Austin Visschedyk, a precocious paparazzo lured by Hollywood’s aura of fame and excitement into running breathlessly to catch a glimpse of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and the likes. We see him roaming the streets, standing out in the pack of paparazzi stationed outside celebrity hot spots, wildly snapping away, learning what makes a shot that sells.

Austin’s coming-of-age tale was set in motion the moment he captured his first celebrity photo, of Grenier. The encounter inspired the actor/filmmaker to turn the camera on the paparazzi, and through the eyes of this teenager, to understand what drives them and how they operate to fuel and create demand for celebrity media.

As the movie unfolds, Grenier immerses himself in Visschedyk’s life, interacts with his family, and builds a meaningful bond with the teenager. Grenier then goes from observing to guiding and mentoring his subject, attempting to steer him towards a more socially significant form of photojournalism – but the media attention surrounding Austin is building up, the roles are reversed, and teenager gets a taste of the celebrity lifestyle he had been shadowing, with Adrian vying for his attention.

Grenier conveys a compelling mix of investigation and opinions, in a refreshing, non-judgmental manner, curious and open to learn about the people behind the cameras. Highly engaging, revealing and insightful, the film is firmly grounded in media theory, from Baudrillard, to Mulvey and Metz, to Henry Jenkins, balanced by an ethnographic approach, including candid interviews with celebrities (such as Alec Baldwin offering his uncensored take on the issue); critics, bloggers, photo editors, and tabloid reporters also share their perspectives.

In an ironic twist, the paparazzi share their concerns as the filmmaker follows them around: "There we have Adrian Grenier's crew, who's exploting what we do." Austin adds: "They're scared you're going to portray us as bad people."

Teenage Paparazzo is just as much about Austin and Adrian's relationship, as it is about the process of documentary filmmaking, and about the blurring between observed and observer in a hypermediated society: frames, mirrors, camera lenses, shots of paparazzi with cameras hiding their faces, a whole scene devoted to capturing Austin's reaction as he watches the documentary for the first time -- all reinforce the film's fascination with reflecting on its own meta dimension.

The democratization of celebrity access is thematic of the film, as author and Teenage Paparazzo co-writer Thomas de Zengotita pointed out in a discussion of the film. This idea becomes even more significant when considering the role of social media in reshaping our relationship to celebrity icons, adding immediacy, a sense of proximity, and the potential for reciprocation, while offering celebrities the chance to take control of their images/messages.

Most importantly, Grenier urges audiences to participate, share, post, comment, shape their own news and images. In another meta-twist, the film, which offers a critical look at the state of entertainment media, has been covered by most entertainment media outlets: as Grenier mentioned in a previous interview, "I want to start a revolution against media and use media to do it."

Teenage Paparazzo premieres today, Monday, September 27 at 9 p.m on HBO.

Ruffian Spring/Summer 2011: Warrior Woman

Ruffian’s Spring 2011 collection was a treatise on the warrior female. The dynamic duo over at Ruffian looked specifically to Susan Tavers, the only woman who served in the French foreign Legion. Military and safari abounded, huge square pocketed cropped jackets with strong shoulders and muslin silk leopard-print tops that harkened back to an era where Annie Hall roamed Manhattan. Gold buttoned crisp white shirts, lots of strong high waisted billowy pants and a few cocktail dresses worthy of the chicest military gal (complete with her strappy heels courtesy of Manolo Blahnik).

However, what the show translated to was less warrior femme fetale and was a bit more unflattering for most women off the runway, especially with the look after look of ruffles on the breast. While the waif thin gals who come down the runway could easily wear this look, not one over an A cup would dare to carry so much weight on a dress in that area.

That having been said, the brands modern spirit was for sure captured in a number of looks, including one black printed cocktail number that was sexy in all the right ways, was a deep dark color without being out of the season. That same print was translated into one more dress and also a skirt, all equally quite sexy. Towards the end of the collection, cobalt and royal blue took over, and all that silk and sheen was sure to please in the warmer months.

Fashion Forward: Perry Ellis’s Prep Paradise For S/S 2011

It was preppy paradise at Perry Ellis’s Spring/Summer 2011 show. Palm trees blowing in the wind were projected onto the walls, as the models walked down the runway.

The style was very schoolboy, with blazers paired with shorts, striped sweaters and Keds shoes. Salmon and coral (personal favorites) dominated the color palette, but mint and pale blue were also featured in a few pieces for variety. Overall, the style was classic and clean.

After the forty-four collection looks were shown, a supplementary twenty-five swim trunk looks were shown as the finale. At the end of the show, each guest left with a complimentary Project Beach polo and wristband, part of an initiative that Perry Ellis is doing to raise money for the clean up of the Gulf Coast Beaches.

Fashion Forward: Show-stopping Gowns At Monique Lhuillier S/S 2011

“This collection came to me in a dream… a beautiful girl running through a lush garden. Her very own Garden of Eden. Beautiful flowering trees in watercolor hues.” wrote Monique Lhuillier on the cover of her S/S 2011 collection program.

The collection was exactly the designer’s inspiration: a beautiful dream. Beginning with wearable separates and short cocktail dresses, it was already clear where the collection was going. Sequins glittered, fabrics were light and pale floral motifs decorated very wearable chiffon and taffeta dresses.

It was all very pretty, but it wasn’t until the appearance of the first of many show-stopping gowns that everyone was truly swept off their feet. One after the other, the models walked out in the gowns, each more beautiful than the last. It was red carpet on a white runway. Rachel Zoe’s right hand man Brad Goreski (@mrbradgoreski) was in attendance, a promising sign of future sightings of these incredible creations on the stars.

Forty looks later, it was time to wake up. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I sure wasn’t ready.

Fashion Forward: Lights, Camera, Custo!

The always-colorful Custo Barcelona showed at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Sunday night. A vibrant frenzy of pattern and print, the show was a visually electrifying experience in the Theatre at Lincoln Center.

Heavy bass music and flashing lights, the show was a full-scale production. Male and female models tore up the catwalk with their fiercest struts. The clothes had pattern, dye effects and appliqués, with hardly any piece left in just one solid color. Gradients, plaid and tie-dye were all present throughout the collection.

Based on the shapes and silhouettes, it looks like the seventies and eighties are back at Custo Barcelona. Flare pants especially have been making appearances in many designers’ collections, a definite trend for Spring/Summer 2011.

Titled “Fiction and Reality”, the collection blends the fictional and the functional (conflicting yet complementing concepts), perfectly on the Custo Barcelona catwalk. Functionality is reflected in everyday wear that creates a perfect harmony when combined with the more experimental garments.

Drew Barrymore Goes Glam In Harper's Bazaar

After a lifetime spent in the public eye, Drew Barrymore is coming into her own and in the October issue of Harper's Bazaar, the movie star talks candidly about her relationship with Justin Long, her lifestyle, personality and body image.

The photo spread captures a glowing, glamorous Drew, posing in provocative gowns by Givenchy, Chanel Haute Couture, and more. Does she not look absolutely stunning?

On Justin Long: “He’s the cat’s pajamas,” she replies. “I couldn’t love, respect, admire, and enjoy that individual more than I do. It would be physically impossible for me to have any more giggly joy at this person.”

On her lifestyle: “I actually really love to lie in bed, watch TV, be a total sloth, and eat my favorite food: Kraft macaroni and cheese. Last night I was watching The Next Food Network Star, eating mac and cheese, and feeling grand. And that was after I wore a sequined Givenchy gown with giant holes cut out of it.”

On her body image: “I feel like some of my baby fat is going away,” she observes, “and that’s not just physically, it’s psychologically. I think that your body is in tune with your mind and your spirituality and your heart. If things are going better, I just think you look better.”

Fashion Forward: Thuy S/S 2011

While there is a plethora of talent showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, many designers opted to show their collections off-site in more intimate spaces. This season, Vietnamese born Thuy Diep invited guests to the Audi Forum on Park Avenue for her show.

For Spring/Summer 2011 Thuy presented wearable separates in a warm color palette. The dresses in the collection were cut in versatile silhouettes that can take you from day into night, all with a quick change in accessories. As per her usual, Thuy designed tailored jackets that added structure to the looks. Dresses also featured seductive cutouts, a signature that we’ve seen in Thuy’s collections over the past few seasons.

Fashion Forward: Star Studded Crowd At Z Spoke by Zac Posen S/S 2011

The tents were buzzing at 7PM on Sunday night for Zac Posen’s return to the tents. The popular, young designer showed his sub-line Z Spoke to a full house in the Theater at Lincoln Center. The star studded audience included Russell Simmons, Kimora Lee Simmons, Claire Danes, Carmen Electra, Jaime King, Kristin Cavallari and Leigh Lezark.

The show was high energy, one of the most fun of the week. The models came out with a bounce in their steps and looked like they were having the time of their lives, walking to a track mixed by the Misshapes. The fashion was fun and wearable and the mood in the room was upbeat, as the colorful, über-cute looks came out one after the other. One model got so excited that she had a little slip! The crowd gasped, but she picked herself up and continued with a big smile on her face (or that was adrenaline at least).

It’s a show like this that injects the fun back into fashion and I think everyone felt like it was the perfect pick-me-up right in the middle of fashion week (and a Saturday night!).

Fashion Forward: Top Models At Mik Cire S/S 2011

This is Eric Kim’s second season since his debut after leaving Monarchy. After attending the debut show for the line back in February, the Mik Cire show was one that I most looked forward to. Seated front row were Gossip Girl’s Matthew Settle (Rufus Humphrey), poker star Shannon Elizabeth, and America’s Next Top Model’s Miss Jay and Jay Manuel.

The show opened with top male model Sean O’Pry and the lineup also included Calvin Klein Underwear model Garrett Neff. Music by Jon Brown (ARCHWOOD Music/Beluga Heights) pumped up the room with energetic beats, complementing the vibe of the collection. (For the record, the song is "Caribou - Odessa Remix" and where-to-download is yet to be known.)

All of the pieces for Spring/Summer 2011 were well fitted and there was an impeccable attention to details. The look was edgy and stylish, yet comfortable and relaxed. Eric’s version of the motorcycle jacket was superbly executed in various colors and materials, shown across a variety of looks. The white and grey looks were a personal favorite, achieving that simplistic sophistication through a limited palette. There were a lot of darker looks as well, that would work well for the transition times between winter/spring and summer/fall.

It’s hard to get people excited at 10AM on a Saturday morning, but ‘The Box’ was buzzing at Lincoln Center for the Binetti presentation. We were already excited to see what Argentinean designer Diego Binetti had in store, but what was delivered was even more beautiful than we could have ever imagined.

Binetti was inspired by nature for Spring/Summer 2011 collection, drawing on textures and patterns of flora, stone, metals and gems. The product was a striking, cohesive lineup of day and night looks. As eye-catching as the looks were, everything in the collection was very wearable. Colors were soft and muted, for a subtle, sophisticated style statement. Favorite silhouettes were the floor length caftans that alluded to old Hollywood glamour.

“It was so exciting being able to show my collection this season - officially as part of Mercedes-Benz fashion week. I design for a woman who owns her domain and has a passion for life. It’s a woman’s inner beauty blooming out of her through my work, I don’t believe in following trends, but I do believe in a world of trend setters.” – Diego Binetti said in the post-show press release.

Fashion Forward: Hamptons Season Wasn't Over At Alexander Berardi S/S 2011

Even though Labor Day had passed, the summer vibe was ever present at the Alexander Berardi Spring/Summer 2011 show, titled “Breathless Is A Tribe Called Hamptons”. Inspired by the 1960 Jean-Luc Godard new wave cinema epic “Breathless” and its star Jean Seberg, the collection captures the mood of restless romance and eclectic chic.

The New York Upper East Sider showed a lineup of very Hamptons appropriate separates and a few statement dresses. Nautical stripes, safari jackets and short shorts all made the cut and light flowing fabrics looked perfect for a day at the lawn club.

Berardi’s latest collection was an improvement from his Fall/Winter 2010 collection, a wonderful progression to see in such a talented, young designer. The Parsons School of Design grad is making strides in the right direction, as the legendary Grace Jones even showed her support from the front row of Berardi’s show.

Fashion Forward: Desert Oasis At Ports 1961 S/S 2011

Captivated by the allure of desert landscapes, Ports 1961 designer Fiona Cibani delivered a mesmerizing collection for Spring/Summer 2011. Drawing inspiration from the contrasts of jagged geometric forms against the sensuous curves of sand dunes, Fiona composed robust silhouettes that encompassed delicate, fluid shapes in both draped and tailored pieces.

Light dusty shades like ivory, shell, willow and Sahara contrasted with dazzling gemstone colors of emerald, sapphire and amethyst. The intense palette reflected the desert: expansively neutral, yet enlivened with seductive glimpses of lush oases. The effect was beautiful, capturing the full attention of everyone in attendance.

The Ports 1961 S/S 2011 collection is accurately titled “Essadi”, the pseudonym used by explorer Isabelle Eberhardt while journeying into Northern Africa in the 19th century. There were many wearable separates, such as shorts paired with loose off-the-shoulder tops. Sleek floor length dresses also made a statement and 70’s inspired flared pants exuded elegance. The movement of the fabrics embodied the wispy softness of sand blowing over dunes, capturing the full essence of the desert. Ports 1961 was chic and beyond, an amazing show to witness.
