Film: Jon Favreau Leaves Iron Man 3

2010-12-15T09:31:00.001-06:00

As you may have heard yesterday, A-list director Jon Favreau is leaving Iron Man for the Magic Kingdom.
There were many rumors floating around yesterday as to why the director might leave. One site reported that Marvel was looking to replace Favreau, another claimed that he didn't want his film to be an Avengers sequel, and yet another thought that he was unhappy that there was a release date but no script yet.

But Mr. Favreau, in an interview with Hero Complex, explains his decision and his thoughts on Marvel and the Iron Man franchise;

“Marvel and I both came of age together,” Favreau said. “The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. ‘Iron Man’ has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the ‘Iron Man’ films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.”

As for his next project, Favreau is finishing up on post production for "Cowboys and Aliens" and is attached to direct a "Magic Kingdom" movie based on the Disney theme park. On this he also had a few things to say:

“Between the theme parks and the movies, the Disney iconography was probably the first set of archetypes that I was exposed to,” Favreau said of his youth in Flushing, N.Y. “Walt was able to expose me as a child to the full array of emotions, including fear and sorrow. Those movies and attractions haunted my dreams and made a deep impression on me as a child. When I first heard about the ['Magic Kingdom' film] project, I was on my way to visit Disneyland with my family. I took notes and had no problem filling a book with all the ideas that this concept offered, even on first blush. Since then, I was lucky enough to be given a tour of Imagineering by Tony Baxter, who knows just about everything there is to know about Disneyland. He pulled original concept art from the archives for me and exposed me to Walt’s original vision.”

Well, he definitely sounds excited about this new project, but we will sorely miss his take on Tony Stark. His tone and direction really brought the character to life and is, in no small part, responsible for the success that Marvel Studios.

But now the big question remains, who will handle the reins for future Iron Man tales? Will they be able to live up to the last two films? What do you think? Sound off in the comments section below.

Tech: Now You Have 90 Seconds To Decide If You Hate That Song

2010-12-09T14:40:00.000-06:00

If you check out Apple iTunes, you may notice that they have made a change to how you sample songs.

iTunes now allows you to listen to 90 seconds of a song before you buy it. Because really, 30 seconds wasn't enough.

Well. . . Not all songs. The criteria is the song has to be over 2 and a half minutes long to warrant the 90 sec sample.

It would seem the record labels aren't terribly happy about it, though. Apparently Apple tried to tell the companies that if they sell music through iTunes, then they are agreeing to the 90 second sample. But something spoked Apple and now they are strictly opt-in.

Overall, this is actually pretty great news for iTunes music lovers (and Michael Scott).

Film: Clint Eastwood’s Hoover Biopic Get New Title and a Few New Cast Members

2010-12-09T14:08:00.000-06:00

With a new name and big stars, not to mention a legendary director, Clint Eastwood’s new J. Edgar Hoover biopic is shaping up to be a seriously good looking movie that is grabbing people’s attention.

Eastwood’s new film will now be titled ‘J. Edgar and while Leonardo DiCaprio is already attached as the famous FBI director, he may be joined by Charlize Theron and Armie Hammer. Hammer made a name for himself in this falls ‘The Social Network.’

This film has already got me excited and adding talented cast member is just making it look that much better.

Now some people are commenting on the fact that Leo looks nothing like Hoover. But in the last decade, DiCaprio has really proven to be one of the best actors of our time. One only has to look at his vast range, from playing Howard Hughes in The Aviator to the lead in Inception he truly is versatile and can probably play the eccentric FBI Director quite well.

The idea is that filming will begin early next year so that we may see a Fall 2011 release

An article posted on Entertainment Weekly’s website today shed’s new light on the upcoming Uncharted adventure.

Film: Two New ‘Red State’ Posters Now Online

Kevin Smith’s new horror film, Red State, is looking pretty great. This week he released two new character posters for the film. Hit the jump to see.

The “Fred Phelps” character is looking really interesting. I can’t wait to see what Mr. Smith can do with a genre like horror. It will be really exciting.

Also Kevin Smith had some demands before he would release these posters. I’ll let him explain it to you.

If you’re a movie website or film journalist and you want to feature this poster or use it in a story, don’t be a detail-thin dick.
Be sure to tell people WHY the poster was released: because http://gfbrobot.com/ bid $2000 to Mitch Albom’s www.havefaith haiti.org in less than 30 minutes.
If you also include the link for Mitch’s Haitian charity in your story/article, you’re not only being a thorough journalist, you’re also helping to save actual lives - lives whose progress you’ll be able to trace via www.havefaithhaiti.org
It only takes a few seconds longer to provide all available facts in any story.
Including THIS fact can help save a child’s life.

Film: Clash of the Titans Sequel; And Zeus Will Return

2010-12-09T11:14:00.001-06:00

I really enjoyed the first Clash of the Titans film. I think it did justice to the original while updating it for a modern audience. But you know, there are still more stories of Perseus to tell.

Today, Ramascreen.com announced that the next Titans film will be called Wrath of the Titans and that some of the Gods will be back including Liam Neeson’s Zeus, who had this to say about the script;

“I’ve only read half of the script and there is still some work being done – they’re on script 10 – but I think it’s going to be some kick-a** stuff and a very human story to it,”

Wrath of the Titans will be shot in 3D this time (Boo!) instead of converted after the fact like the first one. (Double Boo!)

The film will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, who direct this year’s Battle: Los Angeles, and should begin filming in March of 2011.

The next Transformers movie, subtitled “Dark of the Moon” is now online and you can check it out below.

This looks amazing, but really what do you expect. Of, course it looks good, it’s a Transformers film. The real question is will any of the sequels live up to the greatness that was the first film.

Not to say I didn’t like the second one. There were just parts that really bothered me. Now with part 3, here’s hoping the robot twins won’t be there. (Or if they are, maybe they can be just a little less annoying.

Film: Lucas’ “Dead Actor” Movie Rumors Have Been Shot Down Like Porkins

2010-12-07T14:18:00.000-06:00

This week, the rumor mill was running at full power when The Sun reported that Mel Smith, friend of George Lucas, claimed the Star Wars film maker was buying up the film rights to dead actors and actresses in order to put their likenesses in a film. Of course this isn’t true.

Tuesday, a Lucasfilm spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com that, “This is a false rumor.”

How anyone could possibly believe this is crazy to me. “The Maker” may love his technology, but I couldn’t possibly see him doing some quite so. . . silly. And this is the guy who created Jar Jar, so that’s saying a lot.

Besides, doesn’t Mr. Lucas have enough on his plate, what with the ongoing Clone Wars series, the live-action series, converting the holy saga to 3D, and Seth Greens animated Star Wars comedy. One thing at a time, sir.

Tech: Verizon’s iPhone Plan Will Be Comparable to AT&T

2010-12-07T13:55:00.001-06:00

By now, everyone knows that Verizon will be selling Apple’s iPhone starting in 2011. But what we don’t know is how much they will charge for it. Until now...

Verizon has made a deal with Apple that will keep their iPhone plan similar to the one offered to AT&T customers now. It would seem that Apple was worried about Verizon wanting to make their plan more competitive because of the popularity of Android phones.

Apparently, Apple had nothing to worry about, considering they sold 14.1 million iPhones last quarter, and AT&T has outpaced Verizon in market shares for the last two quarters. Not to mention the fact that many industry insiders are now claiming that Android sales are beginning to slow.

Oh ya, and Verizon doesn’t want the iPhone jumping ship to T-Mobile or Sprint.

Tech: Is the iPad 2 coming in February?

2010-12-07T13:33:00.001-06:00

Could we be seeing an update of Mac’s newest gadget so soon?

Cult of Mac is reporting that Apple’s main supplier is shipping the first batch of iPad 2’s beginning in February 2011. They go on to state that Digitimes is insisting that the new version won’t be seeing store shelves until April.

I knew I waited to pick up an iPad for a reason. If this new one has a front facing camera, it’ll be a day one purchase for this guy. What can I say, FaceTime is pretty cool.

What about you? Still on the fence about iPad’s? Hate ‘em? Love ‘em? Sound off in the comment section below.

Gaming: New Tomb Raider!!

2010-12-07T12:34:00.004-06:00

Game Informer has the scoop on the newest Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics and it looks AMAZING. At least this image does.

Here is the synopsis from the press release:

'After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive'

Tomb Raider has been awfully disappointing as of late (with the exception of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light), but maybe this is the turn around that gaming greatest heroine needs.

Film Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

2010-12-06T10:20:00.001-06:00

Welcome to Socially Incorrect Media's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 Review.

What It’s All About. . .

This is the moment fans have been waiting for since 2001. The beginning of the end. Harry, Ron, and Hermione return in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, but this time there is no Quidditch, homework, or evening visits to Hagrid’s. Instead, the trio has been tasked in finding seven Horcruxes, the keys to destroying Lord Voldemort once and for all. Along the way, we see friends and loved ones lost and three kids leave everything behind in order to complete their mission. But there is another plot afoot. Voldemort is looking for the Deathly Hallows and Harry, Ron, and Hermione might have taken on more then they can handle.

Why It Rocks. . .

This is what the series has been building up to. After a mediocre start with the first two films, an excellent installment in the third (except for the ending shot, that will never be forgiven), and a much darker tone since the fourth film, Harry Potter fans could not have received a better beginning to the final two part finale. This story removes everything that has made Harry Potter films what they are in exchange for a more character based tale exploring the relationships between three close friends, constantly in mortal danger, and in way over their heads. These actors have spent the last decade shaping their characters and it really come through here. Which is a good thing because after the first 30 minutes most of the other supporting characters take a back seat and we get a journey quest with our heroes (think Frodo and Sam in Lord of the Rings, corrupting object included). The action here also steps back for a good portion of the film but is amazing when it’s used. And the ending is perfect. As a big fan of the books, it was the only logical place to split the story.

What Could Have Been Better. . .

A few complaints would definitely have to include an awkward dance scene between Harry and Hermione, which I didn’t feel was a terrible addition but some people certainly will. Also a few of the action set-pieces, specially the scene at Godric’s Hollow and the chase through the forest toward the end, had way to much shaky-cam to really get what was going on. And one thing that really kicked me out of the movie was the scene with nude Harry and Hermione (don’t worry it’s kid friendly, but just barely). It’s just kind of jarring to see.

Drum Roll Please. . .

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is by far the best in the series,. Even with a few blemishes here and there, the film’s tone and the finality of it all feels very appropriate for a franchise that, when all is said and done, will have spanned 10 long years. As legions of Potter fans wait with bated breath for Part 2 next summer (even though we all know what happens) take comfort in the fact that if it is anything like Part 1, your mind will be blown!!

Final Score: Go Now!!

Here at Socially Incorrect we are not using the standard number scale to rate our films. Instead, they will fall into one of three categories:

Go Now!! - The film is a must see and worth the price of admission

Wait it out. . . - With DVDs coming out so quickly, it’s good enough for a rental

Let It Pass - It’s a piss poor excuse for a movie and isn’t deserving of the name.

By the way, the voice actor for Marty is not Micheal J. Fox but some previously unknown kid named AJ LoCascio, and he does an amazing job.

Back to the Future: The Game will release it's first episode this month. Look for it on Windows PC and Mac OS X as well as Playstation 3 and iPad.

Gaming: A Quick Review of the New World of Warcraft

2010-12-02T14:14:00.002-06:00

World of Warcraft. Has there been a bigger game in the history of gaming? Maybe, but not one that has lost and drawn back in so many players. Last week, Blizzard released their latest patch, 4.0.3a, which brought many of the changes promised in the new expansion, Cataclysm, for free. As a huge draw, I jumped back into the world of Azeroth and began to take advantage of the new changes.

First and foremost, this new Warcraft is for the alts (experienced players who start new characters) and new players. Many of the changes come in the form of old areas that are different due to the destruction by Deathwing (if your lost here, this article might not be for you). Other big changes are new quest line for low levels, and what new characters start with, along with new classes for races that could not previously use them.

Now for an altaholic like me, this is the greatest patch they have released so far. My highest level character is 72 so end game content is not nearly as important to me as it is to some. But with new toons come new starting storylines and new questlines, faster leveling, and additions like pets or weapons from the start. Also if your class can use a certain kind of weapon, then you can use it right away, eliminating the need to find a weapons trainer and spend gold to be able to use it. And, as mentioned above, there are new classes for the races. My favorite thing was finally being able to role a Human Hunter, who starts with a pet (as opposed to getting one at level 10). But there are some things that are still locked. You can’t fly in Azeroth yet, can’t play as a Worgen or Goblin, and can’t learn the new profession, Archeology. All that will come on Dec. 7th with Cataclysm.

But there is one glaring problem. There used to be portals to major cities from major cities. This might not be a big deal for toons between 1-50, but once you start getting up there, a player learns that the world of WoW is huge! So now, the trade chats are full of people wanting to buy portals from Mages. And they are getting rich off of it. It’s an annoyance to be sure but one we will either have to live with or wait out until Blizzard patches it. Oh ya, and with all the new players either coming back or the high levels returning from Northrend, Stormwind City and Orgrimmar are terribly lagging for anyone but those with the most powerful rigs.

So looking forward to next Tuesday (Dec. 7th), we are getting many more new things, but the biggest draw is here is Blizzard really wants to get new players addicted to WoW and bring old players back who may be tired of end-game content or annoying high level characters (Elitist Jerks, and not just the guild) who look down on anyone who doesn’t have a 6000+ gearscore or the Kingslayer title. But over all I would have to say that Patch 4.0 is an excellent draw for new and returning players and if you haven’t experienced the world’s most popular MMO, there has never been a better time to start
