As if the annual Women In Film Crystal+Lucy Awards Gala isn’t glamorous enough, this year’s glamour quotient rose yet further, thanks to festivities surrounding the organization’s 40th anniversary.

In addition to the sterling line-up of 2013 honorees, the June 12 affair at the Beverly Hilton also brought together a long list of previous honorees and a star-studded audience to support them all.

This year’s Crystal Award went to Laura Linney of “The Big C,” “John Adams” and numerous films. In accepting the honor, she talked about, among other things, her initial transition from the stage to the big screen, when the greatest concern of the predominantly male filmmakers seemed to be the color of her hair. Their directives, she said, revolved around “more blonde” or “less blonde,” and hairdressers adjusted her level of blondeness accordingly.

“It is a miracle that I still have a strand left in my head,” she said. 

The honorees recognized writer Matthew Weiner, as well as every woman in the Mad Men crew. Happily, the list was long and well-worth the time taken to state so many female names.

And as an extra measure of the show’s popularity, a Mad Men gift basket in the silent auction had guests seriously competing to outbid each other. Aside from DVDs, the basket contained Barbie dolls of Don Draper, Roger Sterling and Joan Holloway. 

Also collecting awards were Sofia Coppola, who accepted the Dorothy Arzner Directors Award; Rachel Morrison, receiving the Kodak Vision Award; George Lucas, taking home the Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award; and Hailee Steinfeld, named the Max Mara Face of the Future. 

Cathy Schulman, Women In Film’s president, started the evening by welcoming the crowd. Jenna Elfman of “Dharma and Greg” then took over as host, introducing the presenters, who included Alan Poul, producer of “The Newsroom” and “Six Feet Under;” and Holly Hunter of “The Piano” and “Top of the Lake.”  (Although I hesitate to talk about hair color in light of Linney’s remarks, I have to say that Hunter looked lots better as a redhead than as her white-haired “Lake” character.)

Joining the celebration, too, were Candace Glover and Angie Miller of “American Idol,” who performed for the crowd.   

The glittery audience also included, among others, Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks Animation, Stana Katic of “Castle,”  Holly Robinson Peete of “21 Jump Street,” Francesca Eastwood of “Mrs. Eastwood & Company,” Debra Messing of “Will & Grace,” Amy Brenneman of “Private Practice” and George Kotsiopoulos of “Fashion Police.”

There’s, too, were actors Diahann Carroll, Rose McGowan, Jordana Spiro, Elisabeth Rohm, Laura San Giacomo, Jen Lilley, Jessica McNamee, Byrdie Bell, Kate Flannery, Tao Okamoto, director Garry Marshall, producers Gale Anne Hurd and Frank Marshall, songwriter Diane Warren and Decades owner Cameron Silver. Iris Grossman of Paradigm served as gala chair.

Women In Film Crystal Lucy Awards

On a glorious spring night in Los Angeles, Steve Tisch welcomed producer Olivier Stone, actor Bill Paxton (“Big Love”) and other supporters of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts to his home to hear details of the school’s upcoming gala. Tisch is chairman of the New York Giants and a producer of such films as “Forrest Gump,” “American History X,” and “Risky Business.” 

According to Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell, the gala – slated for Oct. 28 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel – is the second-ever on the west coast. Campbell is vice-chair of President Barack Obama’s Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

As distinguished alumni gathered in the garden overlooking the city, Campbell announced producer Liza Chasin as a gala honoree, along with others yet to be named. As president of U.S. production at Working Title Films, Chasin has been executive producer of “Les Miserables,” “Anna Karenina,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Fargo,” and other films. 

Clearly proud of the school’s graduates, Campbell said, “We tell our kids it isn’t about getting a job. It’s about getting your work out there – not just one time, but making a life for yourself.”

NYU Tisch School Gala

Tommy Tune hosted the June 9 “Tony Awards Viewing Party,” benefiting The Actors Fund, starting out by singing and tap-dancing to a charming “Feeling Too Good Today Blues.”

“I am Tony’s tallest tapper on the tiniest tap stage,” said the 7-foot, 9-time Tony Award-winner. He stood on the platform beneath the giant -size TV screen at the Taglyan Center in Hollywood, set up there so that partygoers could watch the Tony telecast in real time, via a live feed from New York.

Probably L.A.’s best party for avid theater-goers, the crowd was filled with actors and entertainment professionals, including the night’s honorees: Marissa Jaret Winokur, Cathy Rigby, Nancy Dussault, Charlotte Rae, June Lockhart and Millicent Martin; special award recipient Anne Jeffreys; newscasters George Pennacchio and Wendy Burch; actors Iqbal Theba, Frances Fisher, Davis Gaines, Mickey Rooney, Loni Anderson, Stefanie Powers,  Mitzi Gaynor, Kate Linder and more; and champion skater Tai Babilonia.    

For the Grand Finale, Marc Cherry brought all the honorees onstage. as he sang, ”Hats off. Here they come – those beautiful girls.” And who, more than Cherry, could recognize a beautiful girl – he’s the gent who created “Desperate Housewives” and the soon-to-come “Devious Maids.”

Before the night ended, Tim Hanlon, president of the Wells Fargo Foundation, praised Tune and The Actors Fund.

“I want to say to Tommy Tune, Oh My God,” Hanlon said, before adding, “You don’t charge us enough to be presenting sponsor, and we will be back next year – but only if you double the price.” (With 400 witnesses in the audience, presumably this is an official, done deal.)

On the way out, Iqbal Theba, aka Principal Figgins of “Glee,” said he’d be returning next year too.

Jomarie Ward and John Holly co-chaired the event with founding producer Ted Abenheim and committee members Scott Appel, Barbara Allyne Bennet, Harlan Boll, Hollace Davids, Bonnie and David Frank, Dan Guerrero, Bridget Hanley, Don Hill, Paula Mitchell Manning, David Rambo, Marilyn Szatmary, Bonnie Tseng and Luke Yankee.

More event sponsors were Corner Bakery, DIRECTV, Fourishing Art, Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel, Sextant Wines and United Airlines.

Tony Awards Viewing Party Benefiting The Actors Fund

The June 8 “Grand Centennial Celebration” at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County marked “100 years of wonder” for the city’s oldest museum.

Almost an immediate sell-out, the black-tie extravaganza raised $2.2 million and attracted 900 guests to the gala dinner. An additional 400 came the after-party and preview of the new Nature Gardens, Nature Lab and Otis Booth Pavilion, which now showcases the museum’s famous fin whale. 

Given L.A.’s typical, nonchalant dress-as-you-like attitude, it’s not often that so many women deck themselves out in long gowns. Yet the 100th birthday party and major transformation of the city’s oldest museum seemed to justify jewels and high style.

The cocktail reception took place in and around the opulent art deco Haaga Family Rotunda inside the original 1913 building. Guests dined amid the towering dinosaurs and mammal habitats, in my case, beside the western lowland gorilla. The wall-size diorama of Savanna elephants stood at my far left; an ostrich vignette appeared opposite; and the table centerpieces was a terrarium, complete with a mini-dinosaur inside. 

There, too, were birthday wishes, remarks and in one case, a roar, by political officials, arts leaders, museum trustees, major donors and others, including Jason Alexander and a dinosaur.

The “Seinfeld” star talked of the joy of stepping into “the world of extinct animals, to know that these fabulous creatures once roamed the earth and then were no more.”  The roar came from the dinosaur, who crept up behind Alexander, presumably in protest of declaring him extinct.

Lynn Booth, widow of the late Otis Booth, recalled museum president Jane Pisano’s request to the Otis Booth Foundation. “The Pavilion wasn’t even in the discussion,” she said, “but when we saw the plans later, we just thought it would be the right thing to do, and it would be a wonderful legacy for Otis.”

Just before the curtain dropped, a projection showed fin whales alive and swimming, spouting water above the Pavilion and finally, breaking through what appeared to be the glass walls around them. In the “wow” moment that immediately followed, the curtain dropped to reveal the fin whale skeleton in full diving position inside the Pavilion.  

“Very impressive,” said Alexander of the transition, as the Tony-nominated actor and his wife, Dana, awaited entry into the Pavilion. (He predicted that “Kinky Boots” would be hard to beat in the June 9 Tony Awards.)

And according to Pisano, there is yet another wonder, “Becoming Los Angeles,” documenting the history of Los Angeles, that is set to open in July, making the Natural History Museum “a must-stop, first stop for visitors from Los Angeles County, from the rest of the country, and from around the world.”

Lynn Booth and Marcia and Richard Volpert served as honorary chairs, with 100th Anniversary Chairs including Lynn and Douglas Brengel, Janet and Michael Fourticq, Heather and Paul Haaga, sarah Meeker Jensen, Elaine Leventhal, Joan Payden, Jane and Mark Pisano, Allison and Richard Roeder, and Carol and Kevin Sharer. 

J.P. Morgan acted as presenting sponsor. Chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo of “Animal” and “Son of a Gun” designed the menu.

Natural History Museum of LA County Grand Centennial Celebration

Upstairs in the “No Regrets Lounge” at his Beverly Hills boutique, jeweler Stephen Webster gave full credit to Madonna for his initial skyrocket to success. 

In his June 4 talk with the Fashion Circle of LACMA’s Costume Council, Webster said the pop star purchased one of his rings just before she married Guy Ritchie. Four months after the sale, she was photographed wearing the bauble and the rest is history. After that, Webster said, fashion editors declared that he’d re-invented the cocktail ring.

Now famous for his contemporary designs and “crystal haze” stones, which combine quartz and gemstones, the jeweler’s other clients have included Elton John, Charlize Theron and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. Recently the Queen honored Webster with an MBE, i.e., “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire,” which Prince Charles bestowed upon him.

Webster’s charming talk about his life in jewelry and rock ‘n roll image preceded a 4-course dinner by Chef de Cuisine David Hands of Bouchon. Enjoying the evening were members of the Fashion Circle, the upper level support group for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s costume department.

Before dinner ended, the department’s senior curator Sharon Takeda presented Webster with “Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail 1700-1915,” a book about LACMA’s acclaimed costume show that opened the museum’s Resnick Pavilion in 2010.

The exhibition has since traveled to two European venues:  The Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, and the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris.  According to curator Kaye Spilker, the book has been so popular that it is already in its 5th printing, with both French and German editions.

Christine Chiu and Susan Rothenberg co-chaired the evening on behalf of the Fashion Circle, which sadly is soon to disappear. Cindy Canzoneri, chair of the Costume Council board, (which LACMA is also disbanding,) was on hand to welcome the group. 

The Costume Council will go on, however, in a different form, as the corps of volunteer board members will no longer be arranging the extensive slate of programs, such as the fabulous Stephen Webster night. According to Chiu, one more very special evening is still to come.

Stephen Webster Talk with LACMA Fashion Circle

Handbags outnumbered guests 240 to 200 at the May 30 PS Arts Bag Lunch, affording a better-than-ever opportunity for snagging the latest styles from top-name designers, all available in a silent auction.

Rather than take a chance on getting overbid, luncheon co-host Kristin Davis chose the “buy it now” option for a Givenchy item. Looking smart in a Dolce & Gabbana sundress, the “Sex & the City” star said she’d rather pay more than take chances, as she’s learned her lesson from previous years. 

This time, Davis selected the snazzy beige shoulder bag because – aside from its good looks – it felt comfortable on her shoulder. (Clearly Davis is as practical in real life as her alter-ego Charlotte on the show.) 

“It’s a wonderful way to buy bags and give to a great cause,” Davis said of the Bag Lunch for PS Arts, which benefited from 100% of the proceeds. This year, more than $150,000 was raised to improve children’s lives through arts education.

Lisa Kudrow of “Friends” showed off her John Varvatos purchase, while admitting she’s not a “bag person.” Kudrow said she’s carried around the same Il Bisone feed bag for years with the same evening bag inside, which she uses as a wallet on a daily basis.

And when Kudrow took out the black leather envelope to demonstrate, it was apparent she had a great idea. Clearly this luncheon was filled with practical people.

For those who shopped, there were shoulder bags, oversize totes, envelopes, evening purses, messengers, sachels and other styles filling the rooms of Meredith Kaplan’s spectacular Holmby Hills home. Kaplan – who is about to open “Gratus,” a multi-label boutique in Beverly Hills – teamed up with stylists Elizabeth Stewart and George Kotsiopoulos to co-host the event.

“The bags are better than ever this year,” said Stewart. “That’s what’s so great about fashion – each year the fashions change, and each year the bags get better.”

That wasn’t mere talk either. This year’s haul included bags by Chanel, Balenciaga, Dior, Chloe, Givenchy, Celine, Blumarine, Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo, Fendi, Gucci, Hogan, Paco Rabanne, Giorgio Armani, Kate Spade, Thomas Wylde, Derek Lam, Judith Leiber, Bruno Magli, Swarovski and more.

Better yet, each bag came stuffed with beauty products from such labels as Dior Beauty, Urban Decay, Smashbox, Armani, Lancer Skincare and 3Lab. 

Now in its tenth year, the event also offered lunch in brown bags to a chic assembly of guests devoted to the cause, and more resolute than ever, as arts education continues to disappear from schools.

Never mind that Minnie Driver was dashing to leave when we caught up with her. She said she was passionate about the cause and so, stayed to talk about the importance of the arts.

“It makes me crazy,” Driver said, “that people think art is somehow the dessert and reading, writing and arithmetic is the main course.” She said the arts inspire creative thinking, and that’s a trait of importance in every field.  

Creative herself, Driver said she’s now planning to release an album, “Ask Me to Dance.” She then vanished, but not before leaving a bid on a Givenchy handbag. 

Here’s hoping Driver had luck with her silent bid.

The Hollywood crowd joined Center Theatre Group VIPs at Opening Night for The Scottsboro Boys at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

June 9 – The Actors Fund “Tony Awards Viewing Party,” hosted by the great Tommy Tune. June Los Angeles Social Calendar

Lori Loughlin called “Wine Women & Shoes” a perfect event, ticking off as reasons: so many of her friends, two great beneficiaries, and the glamorous array of shoes, handbags, hats and jewelry for sale.  

Loughlin, of “Full House” and “90210,” also said she was ready to shop. “It’s an addiction,” she said.

Carla Du Manoir, Stacey Kohl and Patty Penske chaired the May 22 affair, which gave 400 fashionable women the chance to become even more so, thanks all the vendors who set up shop on the spacious front lawn of Heather Thomas and Skip Brittenham’s home. A portion of all proceeds went to Children’s Action Network and Westside Children’s Center.

Nia Vardalos gave a nod to Children’s Action Network for the success of her best-selling book, “Instant Mom.” Vardalos said she and her husband, Ian Gomez of “Cougar Town,” adopted a daughter 4 years ago.

The writer and star of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” Vardalos said she has since become a spokesperson for National Adoption Day, when courts finalize thousands of adoptions of children in foster care.

Children’s Action Network is dedicated to increasing awareness of children’s issues and finding homes for children in foster care. The Westside Children’s Center is committed to breaking intergenerational cycles of poverty, abuse and neglect and preparing children for a life of learning.

“Backstage at the Geffen” is never predictable.

This year’s affair honored Billy Crystal, the actor, comedian and 9-time Oscar host, and Bruce Ramer, founding chair of the Geffen Playhouse. No other names appeared on the invitation, just the words, ”surprise storytellers” and “musical guest performances.” 

The May 13 storytellers turned out to be an A-list of talent, including Annette Bening, Morgan Freeman, Carol Kane, Topher Grace and Bruce Vilanch.

They told backstage tales, some amusing, some laugh-out-loud hilarious, and much as I’d love to repeat them, host Debbie Allen warned that the stories were off-the-record. So readers won’t find them here, (although if anyone should run into Vilanch I’d suggest asking about Imelda Marcos.)

Yet there are a few more details of the evening in my story in the Los Angeles Times. And as the LA Times, however, only printed one picture – (although a great one: Carl Reiner kissing Billy Crystal’s forehead with his thumb over one eye) – I’ve put more pictures of the talent, honorees, presenters and guests on this page and in the gallery below.

As for the musical performers, Rita Wilson and Jackson Browne sang two duets: “Let It Be Me” and “Dream.” Josh Gad, an original cast member from “Book of Mormon,” opened the show, belting out an irreverent tune about Jesus.

Mona Golabek also told a story, in her case, a poignant tale as she played the piano, just as she had in the Geffen’s long-running “The Pianist of Willesden Lane.”

Here, too, are a few more notes: Clint Eastwood presented the award to Ramer, aided by an empty chair that Allen placed there mid-presentation. Going along with the friendly jab, referring to his stint at the 2012 Republican National Convention, Eastwood continued along in good spirits. 

The presentation to Crystal came next, and Allen began by welcoming her husband, Norm Nixon, to the stage for a video salute from the Los Angeles Clippers.

Comedy legend Carl Reiner followed to give Crystal his award. After doing so, before departing the stage, he appeared to notice for the first time, the storytellers and singers at the far end of the stage. They were quietly sitting there after having shared their stories and songs.

Seemingly startled at the sight, Reiner said, “The greatest talent in the world – in the dark.” 

For his part, Crystal repaid the tribute by telling a story about Geffen founder, the late Gil Cates. He then recounted his own memories of the theater and most impressively, said a few words about nearly everybody’s backstage tale or performance.  

The Geffen’s chairman of the board Frank Mancuso also spoke, announcing proceeds in excess of $1.2 million. 

Faces in the crowd included Roma Downey, whose TV miniseries, “The Bible,” is now setting sales records on DVD; Perrey Reeves of “Entourage;” Robert Zemeckis, director of “Flight;” former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan; Pamela Robinson Hollander, gala committee chair, and Robert Hollander. 

More were Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios; Bruce Rosenblum, president of Warner Bros. Television Group, and Ande Rosenblum; Barry Meyer, chairman of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Wendy Smith Meyer; Jim Gianopulos, chairman and chief executive of Fox Filmed Entertainment, and Ann Gianopulos; Russell Goldsmith, chair of City National Bank, and Karen Mack, author of “Freud’s Mistress,” and Martha Henderson, manager of City National Bank’s entertainment division.

City National Bank served as the title sponsor. Presenting sponsors included the W Los Angeles – Westwood Hotel and its backyard restaurant, where the host committee enjoyed an al fresco dinner; and Audi, also providing cars to shuttle guests from restaurant to theater.
