The event, hosted by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and sponsored by the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education (SUSME), brought together many of the leading experts in ultrasound education and representatives from five major anatomy and physiology societies.

“As ultrasound becomes more common in medical education, both across the nation and across the world, it is essential that educators from the disciplines of anatomy and physiology come together to set the course for the incorporation of ultrasound into medical education,” said Michael Blaivas, M.D., an emergency medicine physician and president of SUSME.

More than 60 attendees from as far away as Israel enjoyed two days of educational presentations and hands-on training in ultrasound. Among the topics addressed were the history and integration of ultrasound into medical education, how to establish an ultrasound curriculum, software and equipment needs, the imaging potential of ultrasound and an orientation in using the technology.

During workshop sessions, participants enjoyed interactive demonstrations on how to use ultrasound equipment to obtain images of the heart, lungs, knee, liver and more. The hands-on experience provided attendees the opportunity to apply their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to a clinical ultrasound setting.

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine’s Ultrasound Institute provided the ideal setting for demonstrations and hands-on training. The institute is equipped with the latest advancements in ultrasound simulation and imaging technology and is the training lab for the School of Medicine’s ultrasound education and research programs. USC is in its seventh year of a fully integrated ultrasound curriculum across all four years of medical school.

“The University of South Carolina School of Medicine has been fortunate to gain global recognition for its innovative ultrasound program,” said Richard Hoppmann, M.D., dean of the USC School of Medicine. “It is an honor to showcase our institution to some of the top anatomy and physiology educators in the world and provide a venue for further discussion and exploration of ultrasound in medical education.”

A leadership panel included representatives from the American Association of Anatomists, American Association of Clinical Anatomists, American Physiological Society, Human Anatomy and Physiology Society and the International Association of Medical Science Educators.

A workshop on ultrasound in medical education was held at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in San Francisco on November 6, 2012.  The workshop featured presentations by leaders in ultrasound medical education from Eastern Virginia Medical School, Texas Tech University, The Ohio State University, University of California-Irvine, University of South Carolina, and Wayne State University, as well as a hands-on component where attendees were able to use laptop-sized ultrasound units.  PowerPoints of the presentations are available on the AAMC website.

Individuals are encouraged to direct special attention throughout the year to educating colleagues, inspiring students, and sharing their knowledge of ultrasound. Ways to support this mission include activities such as mentoring a colleague; encouraging the addition of ultrasound into a medical school’s curriculum; publishing an article focusing on the use of ultrasound to solve a particular problem; encouraging sessions dedicated to ultrasound at specialty society meetings; posting stories about the benefits of using ultrasound in the patient exam or screening. The 2013YOU campaign has gathered support nationally and internationally for its efforts to promote the widespread use of ultrasound. The American Medical Association affirmed its support through acceptance of a resolution in June 2012 that acknowledged the many benefits of ultrasound imaging and support of the educational efforts and widespread integration of ultrasound throughout the continuum of medical education.

The AIUM and SUSME lead the Year of Ultrasound with dedicated programing to support this important endeavor. The AIUM Annual Convention, to be held April 6-10, 2013 in New York, will feature several courses dedicated to ultrasound in medical education including a hands-on course for medical students and a full-day preconvention program on the integration of ultrasound into medical school curricula.  The SUSME will sponsor the First Conference on Ultrasound in Anatomy and Physiology Education March 22-23, 2013 followed by it’s World Congress September 27-29, 2013, both to be held in Columbia, South Carolina.

This very timely campaign supports the mission of Ultrasound First, an endeavor developed by the AIUM, devoted to education and increasing awareness of the effectiveness of ultrasound in enhancing patient care. A growing collection of clinical evidence is available through the Sound Judgment Series published in the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, as well as expert videos highlighting the importance of using ultrasound in clinical scenarios and integrating ultrasound into medical education.
