It’s the legend, the myth behind much of Donna Summer’s huge disco success. Giorgio Moroder did most of his work in Munich and the influence of Düsseldorf’s Kraftwerk can be heard in his work for Donna Summer, which includes two of the ultimate disco anthems, I Feel Love and Love To Love You Baby. This was motorik music: spacious, trippy, ever-lasting, far removed from the relentless bounce of most disco. Giorgio Moroder is also a supreme composer of soundtracks, scoring an unlikely success with The Chase, the theme from Midnight Express, and his footprints are all over British synth-pop, from Pet Shop Boys to New Order to Human League. It was with the latter’s Phil Oakey that he got his biggest self-credited hit in 1984, Together In Electric Dreams.

There’s a new band on the block. Producing some sweet post-folky-rock numbers with a hell a lot of substance, style and elegance right from the other side of the pond. Influenced by the likes of Austra, Nick Drake and Cat Power, New York-based Wilsen blend contemporary folk songs with ethereal, electric arrangements to create a full intricate sound tagged “dream folk”. Wilsen self-released their debut mini-album ‘Sirens’ in the summer of 2012. Their debut single ‘Anahita’ was released in February 2013. New single ‘Dusk’ is released on the 10th June 2013. It comes backed by a cover of Grimes’ ‘Oblivion’ as the b-side. This band is turning the blogosphere into a frenzy as we speak. They dropped a cover of Grimes ‘Oblivion’ too for good measure. Another great tune by the way. Check them out, and keep your eyes peeled for their live appearances here in Paris and/or France… You wouldn’t want to miss them, trust me :

Introducing : Phoenix Martins

This British singer/songwriter from London goes by the name of Phoenix Martins and got rather interested when I started reading the brief : “she is set to release her debut single ‘Heartstrings,’on 17th June 2013. To date she has supported and worked with artists including The Noisettes, Fife Dangerfield and Ebony Bones to just name a few…”.

A little bio and insight :

A natural live performer, Phoenix has been singing since the age of seven, when her and her cousin would charge family members fifty pence each to see them sing everything from Aaliyah to Nina Simone. She cites Simone as one of her biggest influences growing up, alongside Fela Kuti, Sarah Vaughan, Stevie Nicks, Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson. Right now, she’s been listening to music from Vondel Park, Dry The River, Owiny Sigoma and Larkin & the Sky to name but a few.

Having attended drama school as a child, Phoenix’s theatre background provides another solid foundation for her impressive live performances. She offers Judy Garland and Gene Kelly as big inspirations, expressing admiration for their stage presences as well as their awareness of the importance of presentation in particular.

MOVEMENT are Jesse James Ward, Lewis Wade and Sean Walker. Three boys from Sydney, Australia, who “wrote these songs especially for you”. They also hope they make you feel something; and they apparently “don’t intend on stopping” anytime soon. Just signed to Modular People, home to bands like Architecture in Helsinki, The Avalanches, Bag Raiders, Beni, Canyons, ceo, Chromeo, Cut Copy, Kindness, Klaxons, Pond, The Presets, The Rapture, Robyn, Sneaky Sound System, Tame Impala, Van She, Wolfmother, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and every other kick arse music making entity Australia and beyond might offer… Good stuff is going to happen to them for sure, keep your eyes open for Movement, and please do yourself a favor, hit play on this banger below :

Richie Ashwin is a South-East UK recording artist and producer who’s been building a name within British R&B scene, who combines his natural audio skills with a keen visual eye that see’s him shoot and direct his own bespoke music videos.

We digged his sound at first listen. But more specifically these two track, including a Lykke Li co-starring on the very likeable track ‘Until We Bleed’. His new EP is definately worth the spin (listen at the end of the article) :

After some much needed self-reflection and artistic honing over the past 12months Richie Ashwin is now back to introduce to you his fresh, new musical identity.
