i spent time waiting for my turn at the Heart Institute today.

just a routine test but as you can well imagine, it's a busy place.  i come prepared to wait when i go to the hospital, we are lucky that we have access to universal health care and i do not mind waiting.  i chose a chair off to the side, prepared to wait with my journal, my New Yorker and my iphone, confident that i would be a patient patient.  after all, i'm waiting for that grandchild to arrive, so i may as well be waiting constructively.  my life lately is all about waiting.

as usual, i began to people watch.  i was astonished by the agitated people who can't even wait in line to get checked in, a process that will allow them to start the actual waiting time.

one gentleman, briefcase in hand, phone in the other, was pacing, bouncing from foot to foot and then of all things, he tailgated the lady in front of him.  he was so close to her that for a moment i thought that was the explanation, he was with her.  he wasn't.  i had to smile, excuse me sir, i wonder if your rude behaviour has anything to do with the need for a cardiogram?  do you think a deep breath and a head shake might help?  of course, i didn't say this out loud but i wanted to.

i waited patiently, i saw an old friend and was rewarded with a hug and a quick minute of catch up, i saw my doctor, i told her that if my daughter goes into labour i will be ripping this heart monitor off and heading to the airport.  she laughed, at least you have your priorities right.  i thanked her and as i headed out into the stormy weather i thought to myself

kath and i are taking an e-course with kim klassen.  sometimes i have to laugh because kim is just like our teachers of by-gone years; she ends her emails with a "do your homework every day" comment.  i wish i had a dime for all the times i said those words!

it was a beautiful but cold day here and we set out on a walk, one that would fulfill my obligation to bump up my oxygen intake and for the first time in a long time i took my camera along.  i haven't really been taking pictures, i've been thinking about my daughter and the soon to be birth of her baby (hopefully this week).  it seems that lately i can only think about one and only one thing!!!

we hadn't walked very far before i spotted this beautiful abandoned home.  i smiled and thought to myself, hmmm, nesting.

we live in canada's capital city of ottawa, in a wonderful neighbourhood known as little italy, just steps away from an arboretum, home to over 2400 different species of trees.  

it never fails that we meet a dog for charley to play with, usually several.  we stop to chat, marvel at the beautiful winter day and to laugh at the antics of our canine friends.

two hours of winter air left us feeling refreshed and re-energized.  i sat down to do my homework.  i downloaded new fonts, i worked with photoshop and i thought about my daughter.  i jumped up and roasted tomatoes for soup. i fully intend to open a very good bottle of wine to complement it.

we have one thing and one thing only on our minds right now

i see a theme in my life lately.  i came across this old photo and it made me think about hands.

these are my grandson danny's hands.  at the end of each day these little hands are filthy with experiences and adventures, a day in the life of danny.  

my hands have been busy these days as well.  we are anxiously waiting the birth of my daughter's first baby and it has prompted me to take a hands on approach to my photography.  i have been researching newborn photography, taking notes and looking for inspiration.  though i suspect that when that baby comes i will be more interested in getting my hands on that bundle of joy then i will be in putting to practice any learning.

my hands have been busy knitting!!  yes, the soeur who has been adamant that "this is not a knitting blog" has picked up the sticks and string (love that expression).  i am knitting a baby blanket of tiny little squares, i've finished a scarf and a hat (with kath's help).  i hate to admit it but i am enjoying it immensely.  

 i am living life with both hands.

We are home safe and sound. I loved this holiday, it was complete relaxation the entire time. Of course there were people we didn't get to see and some that we didn't get enough time with but we fit in just the right amount of visiting balanced nicely with "us" time.

Yesterday Barry and I checked into a hotel in Montreal, bundled up and went out shooting photos together. At the end of a very cold day I saw the perfect subject for my homework in Kim Klassen's Beyond Layer's course. We had stopped for hot chocolate and before I took a sip, I shot this photo.  

We got home tonight and since I am determined to do the assignments in this class ON TIME, I sat down at the computer and worked some texture magic.  It was a nice way to feel at home.

In the meantime, Margie and I are knitting yahoos.  The sister who said, "Kath, this won't become a knitting blog you know!" might be eating those words real soon... hee hee, in one trip to a gorgeous wool shop, she's come over to the crafty side of the family!
