With the film world buzzing at the remarkable success at the recent Golden globe awards of the modern silent film, ‘The Artist’, the Friends of the Hunt Museum are delighted with the happy coincidence that their next event, to be held in the Strand Hotel, Limerick on the afternoon of February 18th is also highlighting the world of silent movies , when their guest speaker will be Bafta and Oscar award winner, Kevin Brownlow, whose lifetime’s passion for restoring and presenting silent movies earned him the acclaim of Hollywood.

For his visit to Limerick, the theme of his talk will be ‘Those Surprising Silents’, when he will demonstrate his contention that silent film was an art form in its own right, rather than a primitive step on the way to the maturity of the talkies, and that the people who made them had extraordinary stories to tell. The talk will be illustrated by film extracts of the silent era, ranging from films lasting a minute made in 1900, through action melodramas and slapstick comedies, to the spectacular epics of the late twenties.

This remarkable Englishman of Irish descent is the author of several books on the history of Film and has directed many acclaimed documentaries on the same subject. His film restorations include more than 25 silent films, including classics such as The Thief of Bagdad starring Douglas Fairbanks, Ben-Hur, Buster Keaton’s The General and Our Hospitality. In the course of his research he has met and enjoyed the friendship of the royalty of old Hollywood, including Buster Keaton, Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, Louise Brooks, Gloria Swanson, Harold Lloyd and many others. No less a person than Martin Scorsese has said “You might say that Mr Brownlow is film history.”

This not to be missed event will take place at 2pm on the 18th February in the Strand Hotel, Limerick. Tickets at €20 are available from the Hunt Museum Giftshop (061-312833) or the Friends of the Hunt Museum (061-312960). Early booking would be appreciated. There is a student concession of €10 available.

Dear all,

As you may or may not be aware, John Logan is retiring at the end of this month. We would like to compile a collection of photographs of John in SAUL over the past years – and would ask if you could search your collections from time within the studio, on SAUL/SofA trips etc., to see if you have some nice ones of him.

Please email them to Peter.F.Carroll@ul.ie by Thursday 26th January – this week! (if any are particularly large please reduce to 1.5MB)

Looking forward to your cooperation on this.

"Everywhere we look and everything we read right now seems to tell us we are at a new juncture. We are at an unprecedented moment of change – whether teetering on the edge of a financial precipice, or witnessing extraordinary new articulations of protest. This year eva International will attempt to tap into this feeling of imminence by understanding how artists define and explain the status quo in relation to global events. What are we on the verge of? How do artists envisage what is to come and what is to be done?"
Annie Fletcher, Curator of eva International 2012.

eva International and Annie Fletcher would like to invite artists from all over the world to propose new or existing works for inclusion in eva International 2012. Proposals can be made in any medium and selected artists will be supported to produce new or show existing works in Limerick City, Ireland from 19 May – 12 August 2012.

Proposals should be made through the online submission process. Artists can make up to 2 proposals and there is a submission fee of €20 for 1 proposal or €30 for 2 proposals. Supporting materials can either be uploaded through the online submission process, sent by post to Limerick City Gallery of Art, or delivered by hand to Limerick City Gallery of Art or Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Dublin. Deadline: 31 January 2012.
