July saw two amazing Salons in one long week with great punk attitude and soulful songs from the amazing Emperor X and Remarkable Shipwrecks, plus a very sticky, summery night of music from Big Strong Brute and exuberant Italian trio Lapingra.

Thank you to the artists, the audiences, my housemates and hosts and to Elena at Paper & Iron Booking for bringing Chad/Emperor X to Sofa Salon.

The second half of the year sees some astonishing songwriters grace the Sofa Salon, including two Salons for Berlin Music Week and the new Sofa Salon dinner series near Zoo Station.

Ned Collette (AU), Ben Salter (AU) + Mark Geary (IE)

Three great songwriters grace us with music from their critically-acclaimed new albums. Ben Salter is from Brisbane bands Giants Of Science and alt.country collective The Gin Club and co-produced his intelligent, complex debut solo album The Cat with members of The Drones. Ned Collette is a past host and performer at Sofa Salon. He brings us literate musings from his sixth album, 2. Mark Geary is an Irish singer-songwriter whose time in NYC saw him share stages with acts like Jeff Buckley and Glen Hansard (The Swell Season, The Frames) as well as releasing four albums including the haunting melancholia of this year's songs about love, songs about leaving. Hear some great music and enjoy drinks at the Peter Falk Memorial Bar.

Sofa Salon and A Headful of Bees host three official showcases for Berlin Music Week.

Mittwoch 5. September - Sofa Salon presents Phia (AU) + Town of Saints (NL)
Australian songwriter Phia has made kalimba (African thumb piano) and loops the centre of her indie pop sound, constructing energetic, layered songs with soaring vocals reminiscent of Björk's Vespertine album. She will play songs from her new album recorded in Poland. She is supported by Dutch/Finnish acoustic folk-punk act Town of Saints who are renowned for their joyous live shows and will be playing songs from their new EP The Silent Sea.

Over solid and ingenious melodies, Mute Swimmer commits darkly funny and metaphysical sabotage on the art of performance. Il Tempo Gigante is Danish musician Rolf Hansen whose distinctive guitar-style and layered folk-pop recalls a one-man Beirut or Radiohead.

Matt Walker is a well-loved figure on the Australian roots music scene, known for his astonishing white-boy blues voice and mastery of dobro, lap steel and guitar. His tourmate, Lucie Thorne is an itinerant troubadour armed with a deadly red Guild electric guitar and a seductive, womanly voice.

Dear Sofa Salooners, Just to let you know the Salon this Friday with Lapingra (IT) and Big Strong Brute (AU) is now booked out, but if you still want to see a great Berlin singer-songwriter, I can offer you a show with a Sofa Salon regular, the wonderful Eric Eckhart, this Friday night.

I'm always looking for ways to create more paid work for musicians, so Sofa Salon is proud to announce a new singer-songwriter night in Berlin featuring real Berliner food and original live music. Dörte, another Sofa Salon regular, approached Sofa Salon on behalf of the Kartoffelkiste, a Berlin-specialty restaurant at the Europa Center at Zoologischer Garten.

Under new management, they want to promote local musicians and we have organised a series of twice-monthly singer-songwriter events in July and August. It's free entry and features some great Berlin-based musicians. Doors at 20:00. There's not much over this side of town so come on over, gnaw down on some Eisbein and drink some beer with us.

Sofa Salon 2nd Birthday Celebration!
Emperor X (US) + Remarkable Shipwrecks (AU)

In collaboration with Berlin Booking Agency Paper and Iron, I'm proud to present an intimate concert from US underground electro-acoustic noise wunderkind Emperor X (Bar/None Records). Chad Matheny's gleeful shows in tunnels, festivals, houses and bus stations are part fierce acoustic indie-rock and part sampled/looped noise heaven. Making his Berlin debut at Sofa Salon, Remarkable Shipwrecks is Melburnian Simon Morrison's new project, all low-fi folk rock stripped and resonating with raw intensity.

Lapingra (IT) + Big Strong Brute (AU)

Italian toycore band Lapingra is a collaboration between two quirky musicians with shared passion for Barbie, bake-a-cakes, Björk, Disney soundtracks and Bauhaus. Their album uses toy instruments to bake oven-fresh and original songs.
Big Strong Brute is the vehicle for Brisbane songwriter Paul Donoughue's intelligent and sensitive folk-pop. He plays songs from new album, Avalanche Of Truth.

This month, I continue to explore the work of the many amazing women musicians resident in Berlin. The show is on Friday April 27 and features a solo set by Holly Mae Haddock from Holly Mae and The Painted Room and a set by Susanna Berivan.

Holly Mae and the Painted Room is a literate art-folk project that draws inspiration from myth and fairytale, heavy on swooning, sparkling production and harmonies.

Susanna Berivan is a smoky, delicate sounding chanteuse pinning her Delta Folk/Blues songs with a downhome guitar style.

Joining Miss Kenichi is Eric Eckhart, a West Virginian by way of Ireland, who played the very first Sofa Salon and returns to us with a pocketful of big, warm folk-pop songs.

Three powerful performers, Berlin ladies all. Gosia Winter, a Polish-Australian songwriter and guitarist with a playful avant-pop style with the sensuality of 30's jazz and the soul of Slavic folk, Cera Impala, a charismatic stalwart of Berlin's bluegrass/americana scene who sounds like Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips with a wicked sense of humour, and Claudia Emmingham, a bi-lingual poet whose found her voice and bone-dry performance style in Berlin's spoken word scene.

Friday 27. January - Sofa Salon and Songs & Whispers present a living room concert: Gillian Grassie (USA) and Adam Donen (SA)
Sofa Salon is back for 2012 and is collaborating with Bremen collective Songs and Whispers to present a Berlin living room concert for Gillian Grassie and Adam Donen.

Philadelphia-based Gillian is a talented folk pop singer-songwriter and harpist with a jazz-infused rhythmic style and a soulful, supple voice. The quirky intimate detail in her songs make her kin to artists like Feist, Fiona Apple, Laura Marling and Regina Spektor.

Adam Donen, a South African poet, based in London, has developed an ornate, overtly gothic combination of music and poetry rooted in classical, religious music that explores loss of faith and sensual immersion in the physical world. His sound draws on artists like Josh T. Pearson and Leonard Cohen.

Sofa Salon #22 explodes in harmony as our favourites The Sweetness return to Kristian's wonderful Kreuzberg wohnzimmer. The winter is at our doorsteps, the cold and the dark are trying to creep into the last corners well defended by the warmth of our radiators. What better to keep the ghosts of winter away than music?

The 3rd SofaSalon at Kristian's place will be taking place Friday 11th November

7.30 pm (doors 7 pm) ... Entrance fee is 5 Eur as usual, drinks will be around 1-2 Eur.

We are honoroured to have The Sweetness playing for us again, coming over from the great wide plains of Texas and Canada, performing the best of their folk-inspired sets of accoustic magic.

Sofa Salon TONIGHT! - 2nd String band (USA)

Dearhearts, Welcome to Sofa Salon! It seems the summer is finally returning to Berlin and what better than to celebrate with some Music in lovely Kreuzberg. This Saturday 6th August 20.30, Kristian is hosting an evening of American bluegrass, old-time, folk and country-western with The Second String Band from Washington D.C., featuring Sophia Kruszewski on mandolin, Sam D'Agostino on guitar, Phil Aroneanu on banjo, and Jacob Weiss on fiddle, and all on vocal harmony. "Please come, enjoy and our support our dream of sharing our unique blend of American music with friends new and old across Europe!"

Na ja, It's Sofa Salon's first birthday and I'm celebrating with a... Sofa Salon. Exactly one year ago, I put on three afternoon living room concerts for the Moabiter Kulturtage.

The shows were filled with wonderful musicians, poets and an attentive audience. Something really special happened in that space and everyone there loved seeing performers so close. ...Sofa Salon presents an early evening of wonderful music and poetry. Doublebass player Claudia Schneider fronts Diving Bell, one of Melbourne's more intriguing bands. Donnerstag 26. Mai @ Joe's Bar presents the "For Love And Mayhem" tour launch for Wasp Summer and Water Music's European Tour 2011.

This will be the last regular Sofa Salon showcase at Joe's Bar for a while. I'm going to be busy with touring and recording for the rest of the year, so I'll concentrate on the Wohnzimmer Konzerte for the rest of 2011.

This next Sofa Salon is also special because it is my tour launch. I play solo as Wasp Summer and I've organised a month-long Summer Tour with an amazing Australian singer-songwriter that I've actually never met, Water Music.

Through a mutual friend (and friend of Sofa Salon, Mark Steiner), we decided to have an adventure. Our "For Love And Mayhem" European Tour. We both make soulful, raw folk-rock and alt.country. Come and check out the show.

Sofa Salon #17 Wrap-Up:

Well, Sofa Salon #17 was AMAZING. Thanks to the SAND Journal crew for their organisational nous and all the readers and musicians who made wonderful performances for us. We had a great audience, too. At 6 hours, we were tired and hungry by the end (thank you, felafel!) but it was a very relaxed and lovely day.

Our musicians were: Roller One, Monty Sparrow, Waywardbreed, Andrew McCubbin and the Hope Addicts and Jimmy Tait. Our performers included Sunny the Magosopher, C.M Scholler, Becky Crook, Julian Smith-Newman, Sophia La Fraga and Shane Anderson. Check out the web links on the right to get a further fix of goodness. We witnessed incredibly moving moments, wry, sly and, surreal and funny moments. And everyone enjoyed the marvellous hof at Pedram's apartment. Thank you all.

Sam Cooney took some great photos and posted them on this blog and his other blog. Matti Ernstmeier posted some images on Facebook. We got mentioned on übercool Berlin events blog Sugarhigh!

I think there will be more Sofa Salon/SAND collaborations in the future.

Christina Maria did a Sofa Salon in July 2010. She was mesmerising and many requested an encore. She brings her lithe acoustic folk pop back to the Salon alongside Australian act Jimmy Tait, the melancholic and spacious sound of prolific Melbourne songwriter Sara Retallick and her gun band. If you loved The Sweetness last month, you'll love Sofa Salon #15.
Our poet is Alistair Noon, a bi-lingual fixture on the Berlin spoken word scene.

So, last Saturday 26, we had a marvellous night at Kristian's apartment on Oranienstraße. We ran out of beer - twice. There were more of you lovely folk than I expected.

We witnessed wonderful, soulful performances from The Sweetness (Chloe Charles, Aly Tadros, a delirious Douglas and Sam) and poet Ben Porter Lewis.

The beat poetry improv jam with Ben, Sam and Douglas that opened the second half was exactly what I imagined could come from a Sofa Salon event. Thank you to Kristian, the artists and to everyone that came (especially the Slovakian and Wien folk) and made it amazing. You make Sofa Salon.

Onto the Australian onslaught. It's the time of year for Australian musicians to throw down their hard-earned and hop a plane to Europe. I am blessed with several lineups of amazing Australian talent in the next few months. The first is this Thursday at Joe's Bar. Behold:

Andreas told me 'Ubuntu' has various meanings in different African languages, and said Nelson Mandela explained it this way: "A traveler through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves. Sofa Salon returns to the comfiest new bar in Prenzlauer Berg - Joe's Bar - for Sofa Salons new monthly Berliner Songwriter Series featuring Australian Gothic Folk from Waywardbreed, High Drama Bossa Nova from Roland Satterwhite and shimmering poetic performance from Sandra Serala. A wonderful lineup of German singer-songwriters. I saw The Alma Church Choir at SIN Bar a year ago and dreamed of having them play in my living room. Now it's happening and they bring the talented Berlinerin Lena Paul with them for an evening of ambient folk/country wonderment.

It's been a while since the fabulous Sofa Sessions gigs for the Moabit Kulturtag back in July. People are still talking about the wonderful performances and atmosphere.

In the meantime, I've had many Wasp Summer/Mesalina gigs to play and a name issue to resolve. I was really surprised to find there has been another wohnzimmer concert series called Sofa Sessions running in Berlin (great minds an' that). The convenor asked that I cease and desist using the name.

So the new name for my living room concert events is the Sofa Salon. Same amazing mix of music and poetry. Same lovely living room.

Therefore, the Sofa Salon would like to announce the next gig in the series:

Es ist eine lange Zeit gewesen, seit Juli's Sofa Sessions für die Kulturtage Moabit. Die Leute sind noch im Gespräch über die erstaunlichen Leistungen und Atmosphäre.

In der Zwischenzeit habe ich viele Wasp Summer/Mesalina Gigs hatte. Ich hatte auch einen Namen Problem zu beheben.

Ich war überrascht, es hat ein weiteres Wohnzimmer Konzertreihe in Berlin berufen worden Sofa Sessions. Große Geister denken genauso. Der Convenor gebeten, dass ich nicht mehr aufhören und mit dem Namen.

So der neue Name für mein Wohnzimmer Konzertveranstaltungen ist das Sofa Salon. Gleiche erstaunliche Mischung aus Musik und Poesie. Gleiche schönes Wohnzimmer.

Daher würde der Sofa Salon wie auf den nächsten Gig in der Serie anzukündigen:

On Friday 9 July, Sofa Sessions, Berlin's most intimate music, poetry and art showcase goes from the wohnzimmer into Prenzlauer Berg's gemütlichsten new venue, Joe's Bar.

The fourth Sofa Session features Eric Eckhart (USA), Wasp Summer (AUS), Ken Burke (IRE), mr oCean (AUS), Wayward Breed (AUS) plus special guest performers.
