Purpose: To learn to catch a fly ball on or near the home run fence when softball fielding.

Procedure: The outfielder begins in a ready position around 15-20 yards from the outfield fence. A coach or partner stands 20-30 feet in front of the player with a ball and throws the ball up and over the player's head. The fielder turns, puts her head down, and runs to the fence. She finds the fence with her throwing arm (by touching the fence) and stays sideways to be able to move quickly one way or the other, then turns to find the ball and makes the catch. Each fielder catches 5-10 balls.

Purpose: To isolate the snap and your grip when practicing advanced pitches for softball pitching.

Procedure: Stand sideways, as if you have already taken your stride, about ten feet from a partner. Throw your pitch without the windup and with just a slight backswing, working on getting most of your power from your wrist snap. Work on all the pitches this way until you feel comfortable with the different releases.

Procedure: Drill has four lines of runners, with one line at each base. The lines consist of four or more runners. The first runner in each line explodes off the base for three to four steps, then jogs to the next base and goes to the end of the line at that base. The drill continues in this manner for a designated time period.

Purpose: To practice footwork and releasing the ball quickly for the throw. An intense conditioning element is also a part of this drill for softball fielding. (...)

Purpose: To practice footwork and releasing the ball quickly for the throw. An intense conditioning element is also a part of this drill for softball fielding.

Procedure: This drill can be used with any of the infielders in a variety of situations. For each position, place five balls in a line in an area where that player would likely field balls. For example, to help the third baseman practice fielding bunts, set up five balls in a line extending from the foul line toward the pitcher's mound around 10 feet away from home plate, where the fielder would pick them up for a bunt. The third baseman begins in her normal position and depth, then runs to surround the first ball and throws it to first. She then runs back to her starting position and quickly turns back to field the next ball. Repeat until the fielder has thrown all five balls. Place the balls in simular areas for the first baseman and catcher. For middle infielders, place the balls to one side of each player and have them practice their throws to each of the bases. Each player fields and throws two sets of five balls placed in slightly different locations.

Purpose: To teach baserunners to cut tight corners and get around the bases as fast as possible. This drill works on the basics of base running.

Procedure: Set up an infield with no pitcher. Your baserunner tosses the ball to herself and hits a ground ball. She then takes off around the bases as fast as she can, going from first to second to third to home. The infield also circles the bases with their throws, trying to get the ball to home plate before the runner gets there. If it's an inexperienced team, it should be about even. More advanced teams have to take the ball back to first each time - that means, field it, go to first, go to second, back to first, go to third, back to first, and then home. The person who fields the ball is not allowed to be involved in covering a base, just as it is in a game. Every baserunner who makes it home before the ball gets a point. Make it a contest to see who can get the most points.

The player who's in the best position for catching the ball should yell "ball-ball-ball." The other players nearby should respond to the player's call b yelling "take it - take it." The player to whom the ball is hit should catch it and throw it back to the coach.

Purpose: To improve the batter's hand quickness when softball hitting.

Procedure: Using a regulation bat or a stick cut to the length of a bat, the player takes a hitting stance. The feeder stands a safe distance from the hitter, but close enough to be able to drop a whiffle golf ball into one of the three hitting zones. The feeder should be able to drop a ball that simulates either an inside pitch, an outside pitch, or a pitch down the middle. To drop the whiffle golf ball into the batter's inside hitting zone, the feeder should drop the ball in front of the hitter at a point on the inside corner of the plate. To drop the whiffle golf ball into the outside hitting zone, the feeder should drop the ball in front of the hitter to the batter's outside corner of the plate. To drop the whiffle golf ball into the middle of the batter's hitting zone, the feeder should drop the ball in front of the hitter at a point in the middle of the plate.
